We Got a Private Screening of ‘Act of Valor’ — Here Are Some Things We Found Out

Several Mercury Radio Arts employees had the opportunity to attend a special screening of the upcoming Relativity Media movie “Act of Valor” last week, a film that was certainly more than just a movie — it was an experience. During the screening, we learned some interesting information that you might not get anywhere else, like why the SEALs in the movie are wearing FDNY patches.
“Act of Valor” is not your everyday popcorn flick. The majority of characters in the film are portrayed by active-duty U.S. Navy SEALs, not actors, and the film’s modern day counter-terrorism plot is a fictionalized account of real life Navy SEAL operations. The explosions are big, and gunfights feature live ammunition. In short, it‘s unlike any movie you’ll see this year, both in content and purpose.

At the event last week, co-Director Mike “Mouse” McCoy explained that he and creative partner Scott Waugh spent years developing the film and recruiting actual military professionals because Hollywood has “pretty much blown it” in terms of portraying real Navy SEALS on the big screen. Waugh sarcastically added that he would have preferred to cast real terrorists as well but “none of the mother f*ckers wanted to play.”
“This film is pretty anti-Hollywood,” said McCoy. The filmakers also said that they were mindful to be as authentic as possible, without giving away “our playbook” to enemies.
That said, Act of Valor packs an incredible combo of suspense and visual effects comprable to the most stunning action movie, while retaining an authentic human emotion from the film’s actors*, who know all to well how the plot plays out in real life. Act of Valor shows the real evil that exists in this world, but also the forces of courage exemplified in the SEALs who fight back against such enemies.
Mercury‘s Colin Balfe also attended the special screening and said that the film’s adrenaline fueled action scenes and intimate family moments made it a winner.

Keith Ferry of Markdown.com said that throughout the film he was constantly thinking about “how overused words like honor, bravery, sacrifice and hero are in our everyday lives.“ Ferry said that this movie allowed him to gain ”a completely different perspective and appreciation on what those words really mean and how lucky we all are to live in a country where there are men and women like the Seals in the movie that truly represent the definition of those words.”
The film‘s most emotional scene perhaps came at it’s end, where instead of credits revealing the actors’ names, the screen reads the names of Naval Special Warfare forces killed since September 11.
Several active duty Navy SEALs were in attendance for the screening, and spoke to the crowd before and after the film. One SEAL moved the crowd by describing the “bond and brotherhood that exists between SEALs and first responders.” He explained that often while home in between tours, SEALs like him visit friends at local fire stations. That’s led to a practice that he feels honored to take part in: firefighters lend out patches from their local stations to SEALs to be worn on their uniforms in battle, with the intent that the warriors promise to bring the patches back home themselves. In the film, several characters are seen with FDNY patches on their SEAL uniforms.
The film’s directors McCoy and Waugh appeared on HLN yesterday morning to give a shout-out to the brave men and women serving overseas and the first-responders protecting us at home:
Here’s the trailer for the incredible film set to be released one week from Friday:
Several of the SEALs who appeared in film were interviewed on Fox and Friends Friday:
To make the private prescreening before the film’s February 24 release even more special, the majority of seats at the Upper West Side theater were reserved for NYPD and FDNY first responders. The event was put on by Relativity Media in partnership with The NYC Police Foundation and the FDNY Foundation, who each received a $10,000 donation from the film’s directors and actors following a Q & A at the movie’s end.

At the film’s Los Angeles premier Monday, the directors and stars exemplified further that “Act of Valor” is not your average Hollywood movie. Six Navy SEAL stars made their red carpet entrance by parachuting onto Sunset Boulevard where the theatre hosting the film’s release was located. The Hollywood Reporter was there and writes:
“’Nobody from Hollywood wanted us to make it,’ filmmaker Scott Waugh tells THR, after SEALs parachuted onto Sunset Boulevard.. ‘That’s why we ended up funding it ourselves and finding private equity and why we really made a truly independent film with this.’”

Dearest ROSE-ELLEN,
These Seals are trained to minimize collateral damage, and do an unsurpassed job of it. Collectively, they’ve probably killed fewer innocents than most of the wayward missles and bombings authorized by President Obama. They certainly care far more about delivering on their commitments than he does . . .
Now, go do some research, and figure out which Republican presidential candidate you are going to vote for . . . or just stay home.

Just because he gets more money from the military, that doesn’t mean he has the support of it. I’d love to see how those numbers break down between officer and enlisted, first term and multi-enlistment, and which branch….
The argument that he gets more money from the military than any other candidate, so the whole military supports him is parallel to the argument that Obama got the most votes so the whole country supports what he does…
I really wish he would stop toting that line, cause I actually have people say to me now “oh, your a vet, you must support Ron Paul”, and he is at the bottom of my list….

TEXAS CHRIS, I dare say I’ve dug deeper than most Paul supporters have. I liked the guy a lot, up until about 2 years ago…
I agree with a lot of his principles, but they are principles to live by, not govern by.
The kicker is his foreign policy. I’ve seen and experienced what happens when you apply ideas like his to the real world. They don’t work. Evil can not be left to it’s own devices.
The issue is not the mission, it’s the execution. Ron Paul is against both. The mission in Afghanistan, and Iraq were justified. The execution was clouded in politics and media oversight.
BTW, I do support Israel, the same as I do Canada, the UK, or any of our actual real allies we have defensive treaties with….
I also detest the Iranian regime. If I got a call from the USMC tonight asking if I wanted to be on the first wave of KC-130s to touch down in Iran and offload grunts I‘d say yes so fast they wouldn’t even hear a click on the phone….Not because I love war, but because I love defending my country….And people like Ron Paul and his most vehement supporters won’t…And while some may not be cowards, the others wrap themselves in the constitution as some excuse for us not defending our country, our international interests, and our allies from first strikes…
That ‘neocon’ enough for ya?

Posted on February 14, 2012 at 3:10pmWell, on behalf of the rest of them, thank you for the sentiment.
That said, most of us want to be them, too. ;-)
Put it this way: Your average Airman or Sailor is mostly like ano dude you see on the street. The jobs aren;t very physically demanding because they don’t need to be, due to the mission. Your average Soldier or Marine is an athelete, running miles upon miles, jumping, carrying heavy loads over long distances, shooting and killing enemies put in front of them…
And then there are these guys.
Your average Special Operator (to include Deltas and Rangers, some Marine Force Recon and FAOs, the Air Force’s Combat Controllers and various SOPs groups, and, of course, the SEALs) can be compared with olympians, but IMHO olympians would be found lacking. They may not all run 4.1 40′s or world record time marathons, or high jump or pole vault, but many can. There‘s not an olympian in the world that can do what America’s Special Operators do.
From a “lowly” everyday Marine, these guys deserve to be lionized.

If you recall that day clearly your master BHO had to be pulled off the golf course.

Posted on February 14, 2012 at 1:46pmIt’s hard to put into words how much I admire these men. The most wonderful feeling in the world must be to find yourself in trouble and looking up and seeing the SEALS.
I pray that one day Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl gets to know that feeling of gratitude and relief.
This is one movie I’ll gladly pay money to see.
God bless them.

Posted on February 14, 2012 at 1:44pmWhen I first read aboutt his movie, I thought it would be a good movie and marked its opening date on my calendar. After reading this, I believe it’s a “must see” movie. With all that our President and his minions have done and are currently doing to this country, it will be gratifying to see the story of how our unselfish military elite deserve all the accolades they can get. I for one, have much more faith in all branches of our military than I do in this administration.

Posted on February 14, 2012 at 2:17pmAmen to that! I don’t know how much Navy Seals make in terms of salary, but I‘m sure it’s not even close to what Obummers unionistas make. ALL military deserve a big raise!

Posted on February 14, 2012 at 11:09pmI’ll Second that Kentucky! Just think if we were to quit giving money to our enemies how much more we could do for these men and women returning home. Let alone cutting the rest of the bureaucratic fluff from our super bloated government.
I have the privilege of working with men and women from all branches on a daily basis, besides having friends and family who are enlisted. As a civilian I would like to personally thank each and every member of our armed forces, past and present, as well as their families for their service.
I stand in awe of our special forces of all branches, our American Jedi. Thank you is simply not enough for these men and women. May God bless them and keep them safe while in harm’s way.

Posted on February 14, 2012 at 1:42pmI’m sure glad that they let real Military patriots have roles in this movie like when the Green Berets with John Wayne was filmed. I had an old Army SF friend who tried to get in that movie as an extra with a peaking part, but supposedly was quite a bit taller that John Wayne an that was a no no. I also had a few buddies later on who were in the Movie “Gardens of Stone” with James Caan about the “old Guard” at Arlington National Cemetary during ‘Nam.
What really torques me is when actors like Val Kilmer make absolutely ridiculous statements about our Military (some very insulting remarks) and say things like he would have been a better Soldier than our real ones because of his acting training… laughable.
Same type of bluster we got from Marky Mark and his Funky 9-11 statement. Most in Hollywood are nothing more than legends in their own minds.

Posted on February 14, 2012 at 1:35pmI wondered if this movie would be a propaganda tool, to be used by the Whitehouse, for re-election purposes.
But, Im not so sure know, however, “O” may use it anyway……smh

Posted on February 14, 2012 at 2:42pmI’m hoping this one will take the steam out of the one 0bama has planned with his friends in Hollywood where he is the hero of the taking of 0sama. Fact is he dithered to the point that he seemed to be doing everything he could to AVOID taking out 0sama, so that one IS going to be a big, fat, lying piece of propaganda crap. Hopefully this one will steal the thunder of that one so that when 0bama’s movie comes out everyone will say, ‘meh’.
