‘We Stand With Chick-fil-A’: North Carolina Wendy’s Signs Touch Off Controversy

The national burger chain Wendy’s was hit with a bit of secondhand controversy from the Chick-fil-A appreciation day today after one miniature burger mogul franchising the company’s restaurants went rogue.

The story began when North Carolina Wendy’s franchisee Jim Furmen, who owns no less than 86 of the company’s franchises in North Carolina, decided to have all 86 of his restaurants display a sign making the following unapologetic statement:

Wendys Signs Saying We Stand With Chick fil A Taken Down; Company ApologizesNeedless to say, given the existence of pictures of this phenomenon, the internet took notice. The internet site Reddit began circulating photos of Furmen’s handiwork, prompting controversy. So much controversy, in fact, that the official Wendy’s Twitter account posted a reaction from the company saying that Furmen had taken the signs down (presumably under corporate edict) and that Wendy’s was proud to “serve ALL customers.”

Wendys Signs Saying We Stand With Chick fil A Taken Down; Company ApologizesReaction to this Tweet was, needless to say, mixed. Some Twitter users breathed a sigh of relief, but as you’ll see below, others took offense to the implication of the company’s Tweet, which was clearly that Chick-fil-A might NOT “serve ALL customers.” Wendy’s clarified hastily:

Wendys Signs Saying We Stand With Chick fil A Taken Down; Company ApologizesWendys Signs Saying We Stand With Chick fil A Taken Down; Company ApologizesSo profusely did Wendy’s spend all its time apologizing to every single user who Tweeted out this particular bit of news, in fact, that they hit their Twitter limit, prompting this awkward message:

Wendys Signs Saying We Stand With Chick fil A Taken Down; Company ApologizesNational restaurant chains everywhere, be warned: Chick-fil-A’s day in the limelight can be contagious.

Chick-fil-A for granddaughter on the way to church. She said I wish people on the left hated Chick-fil-A everyday bc Michele Obama messed up MacDonalds Happy Meals and took our playground…lol. It is a shame when the media and the president talks too much power and division in our country so much that a 6 year old understands it. Good for Wendys franchise and boo to the corporate management. He lost killer business for Wendys by refusing freedom of speech.

This whole gay marriage controversy, like most others with this administration has nothing to do with gays at all. It’s all about “anti-business”. Democrats will do anything they can to kill business in this country. They want it bankrupt and dependent on a new communist government. So when you see the liberal mayors spouting their garbage, that’s where there going. Kill business at all cost is their purpose.

Wait, so corp puts out a tweet saying they serve everyone? Can anyone show proof where CFA said they wouldn’t? One statement, one news report? I mean if they are turning people away, SOMEONE would have proof right?

There should be backlash against that tweet telling corp of Wendy’s they have no clue what they are talking about and to quit listening to rumors about the story and read up.

Guess I’m strange about some things, but when I get turned off about something, that’s the END of it for me. I appreciate a Wendy’s trying to do good with their sign, but:

Over 35 years ago when a Wendy’s came into our town, I went to get hamburgers for our crew for lunch. At that time I guess they charged extra for a slice of tomato, etc. but I didn’t know that. The drive up girl asked if I wanted anything added to burgers.
Not knowing what she meant, I told her to put what ever they usually use on burgers.

When I got back to work and looked over the bill, I had been charged extra on each burger for tomatoes? That was a new one to me, and pizzed me off, so never went back even all these years later. That was my first & only square Wendy’s. Just the way I am. Treat me right the first time if you want to see me again.

when good people stand by their principals, others will follow. Ronald Reagan was a fine example and the country loved him for it and the 20% of the left tried to tear him apart at every opportunity. Chick fil-a is no different, the intolerance of the sodomites becomes crystal clear, while decent folks support what is good.

Thank you for calling a spade a spade.

Am I the only conservative left who takes offense of the word “gay” being used for homosexuality? Before he died in 2009, my father told me about his mother’s side of the family having Gay as their last name. I seriously doubt if their definition of the word“gay” was similar to what popular culture uses today.

Why have many of my fellow conservatives accepted politically correct language such as this?

Too bad so much knowledge from antiquity has been lost. If the sodomites and all those who speak evil of the Lord read the book of Enoch and second Ezdras and what awaits them maybe some of them would change. Clearly they do not listen to the Word in the bible. Partially because texts which gave accounts of what awaits, texts which should have been canonized including second Ezdras make it very clear what they will soon face. Reading the bible they only get the concept of a hell they do not believe in and they laugh it off to their eternal doom.

I will add while I loved their potatoes from now on I will make them from scratch, I will never set foot in their stores again in my life. Wendy’s needs to learn we are greater in number than those who side with darkness. If money and the bottom line requires them to be so PC then they must learn what the effect on their corporate bottom line roughly 80 percent of all the people represent. When the 4/5 are spat upon, told to be quiet they are only second class citizens and have no right to stand and speak for their values they must learn to stop taking it in silence. For this reason Christians are so put upon in this land, if they had salt they would stand as one body for their God making it known to all. The Lord will return with His armies, when He arrives will He find salt on the earth?

B.S.! Wendy’s caved – and unless that franchisee was invioaltion of the franchise agreement – he’s free to express his opinion (either for or against) as he/she saw fit. Wendy should have simply said their franchisee‘s are free to express their opinions and Wendy’s will not make comment on a competitor. That would ahve prevented their placing their butts in the fire! Dumb response. That said – I hate gutless. If Wendy‘s had said we oppose Chic’s preference – I would have respected that and would decide later if I patronized their establishment or not. Now – no way. I‘m done with Wendy’s.

In a way I can understand corporate’s position on this, they have an image and do not need to become embroiled in this. Do not get me wrong, I understand their position, I do not agree with it. The problem is that media and those with access to the media don’t want to LISTEN to what is being said. You are 100% correct. And why? Because you LISTENED and understood what Mr. Cathy stated.

Here is a clear example of what to take from this. Mr. Cathy clearly stated his views and values. The media took the information and ran it through their agenda filtering system and decided spun it out in a distorted agenda. Their twisted agenda was then pushed as the truth. NOW…IF the media can twist and spin things this much on something that was so clear and direct what else do they twist and spin on other topics? Since the media and select mayors can‘t be trusted to repeat clear and direct statements to others then one clearly cannot trust them views on other things that aren’t so easily discerned.

THIS is an excellent teaching opportunity for parents and grandparents to teach their children and grandchildren: 1) how important the truth is; 2) how “news” is spun through the agenda driven media and mayors; 3) the importance of paying attention and listening to what is said.

Keeping records of spun stories is important for history. A record of the TRUTH is important.

I wonder if Dave Thomas was still alive, what would Wendy’s official Corporate position on this subject be today? Either way, he was a good man.

Wendys… FOR PETES SAKE! Stand with Your Franchise OWNERS! This ENTIRE isue is about FREE SPEECH , but has been spun into a LGBT issue… The LGBT community has been USED to help control FREE SPEECH… IF THEY ARE SMART they would make th statement : While they do NOT agree with Dan Cathey and Chick Fil-A – They agree that he has the right to say it! At what point wil the LGBT community be next…..and then WHO WILL STAND WITH THEM! If you choose to NOT EAT there ….thats fine!…. But FREE SPEECH MUST REMAIN FREE FOR EVERYONE!

Tarheels Capitol site is down, probably due to traffic. He appears to own stores from Grenville SC to Boone NC. I am just south of Asheville. I will be sure to frequent his stores in the future. Wendy’s corporate can kiss my ass.

What a disappointment! Wendy should have stood firm and supported Chic.

I bet CFA pulls in, at least, 100 million today.

This is turning out to be a very good marketing choice.

Expect others to try to simulate.

Arby’s (whoever owns them, can’t keep track) bought out Wendy’s some time ago, if I’m not mistaken. So. . . I guess they’re not quite as brave as Chick-Fil-A. lol Too bad! Hey Arby’s/Wendy’s: IT’S A FREE SPEECH ISSUE!

Guess they didn’t get the memo!

In fact, you are WRONG. Wendy’s is a publicly traded company listed on the NYSE, Symbol WEN. But the rest of your point was…………moot.

@model82a1 and justpeachy In 2008, Wendy’s mergered with Triarc, the parent company of Arby’s. Following the merger, Triarc became known as Wendy’s/Arby’s Group, a publicly traded company. The merger was unsuccessful and Arby’s was sold in summer 2011. Just because a company is publicly traded does not mean that there is not corporate ownership.

ORION, Just because you can use Google or Yahoo Finance does not mean you are not naive. The reason Chick is able to stand firm on an issue such as this is because the company IS NOT PUBLICLY TRADED. As such, they are not beholden to external, institutional investor control. Wendy’s has no such luxury. You’re too smart my half, my friend.

@model82a1 Your position about CFA not being beholden to investors is a valid point for discussion. Too bad you didn’t think to state that in your original reply instead of saying “In fact, you are WRONG” without bothering to say which part of justpeachy’s comment you disagreed with (unless “Moot” is liberal shorthand for whatever pithy comment you had in mind but did not type). Of course, Target, Home Depot, etc (all publicly traded) can all stand firm in their homosexual rights beliefs despite being “beholden to external, institutional investor control”. As for “You’re too smart my (by) half, my friend”, don’t go near any mirrors.
