‘We Tried Our Plan, & it Worked’: U.S. Manufacturing Shrank Again in July

U.S. manufacturing shrank for the second straight month in July, further evidence that that so-called “recovery” we keep hearing so much about isn’t that much of a recovery.

The Institute for Supply Management (ISM), a trade group of purchasing managers, said Wednesday that its index of manufacturing activity ticked up to 49.8, from 49.7 in June, below its hoped for expansionary print of 50.2 (anything below 50 is considered a contraction).

“Where did offsetting growth come from? The most hollow of indicators — Inventory — which keeps on being built up in expectation of a demand spike that never comes,” Zero Hedge notes.

This isn’t the first time the ISM has whiffed on one of its reports.

“This is also the third miss in a row for the ISM, whose most watched component, the Employment index, slid from 56.6 to 52.0 confirming that the earlier ADP [Automatic Data Processing Inc.] number was a total noisy fluke as usual,” the Hedge notes.

If it’s any consolation, the index number needs to fall below 43 to signal that a full-blown recession is on its way (well, according ISM anyways).

So at least we got that going for us, right?

The July report also showed factories hired in at a slower pace than June, while new orders declined more slowly. And export orders fell to the lowest level since April 2009.

Manufacturing has been a key source of growth in the U.S. since the “recession ended in June 2009,” the AP reports. But in recent months, factory activity has weakened along with the broader economy.

But keep in mind, as we’ve noted before on TheBlaze, the housing market has seen an uptick in sales. This means that, along with a contracting manufacturing sector, we’re could be in for a prolonged stagnating economy.

Well, so much for that consolation bit.

Job growth has slumped and U.S. consumers and businesses have cut back on spending, lowering demand for factory goods. Europe’s economic woes and slower growth in China, India and Brazil have reduced demand for American exports.

The Federal Reserve said earlier this month that factory output rose in June as the production of cars, machines, and business equipment rose. That followed a drop in May.

Overall, manufacturing output rose at only a 1.4 percent annual rate in the second quarter, after a jump of 9.8 percent in the first three months of the year.

Final thought: Remember when President Obama said “We tried our plan, and it worked?“ Which part of ”our plan” was he talking about?

    Removing manufacturing jobs from the American economy has definitely been the goal…until all thats left are government employees supplying services and the private sector filled with minimum wage employees working at Walmart,distributing to the people their basic necessities,products which have been made in another country…….Even though this concept started long before Obama became President,Obamaville is still an appropriate name for the new America presently being constructed…..My question is whats going to happen when the countries producing all the products we need stop sending them to us…then what huh?

    Thanks Barry….I am small business owner, I have been up since 3:15 AM working and I finished at 7:30 PM last. Looks to be the same the rest of week!

    I take my first break for a cup of coffee was at 2:30 PM and I wanted to catch up on what going on in the financial markets, world, current events and find this positive piece of news..thanks big federal government!

    Since the new tax of Obamacare was announced in June..my customers are holding their cash. As small business owners we are holding on to reserves, taking less pay for ourselves, not re-investing in our business so we can keep our staffs employed…But as I travel trying to build my business revenue I see more and more empty commercial property!

    But the revenue is hard to come by and most importantly we don’t want our building to become empty commercial property so we are keep more and more reserved to have when the economy goes of the cliff!
    So Barry, that why you don’t see and growth!

      First, the Republicans destroyed the economy and then ensured that the president would not have any tools at his disposal to fix it. Second, the Supreme Court legalized billionaire-bribery. Third, the right-wing has a vast media empire whose members serve as more of an auxiliary to the GOP than as corporations or normal news outlets.

      Marxist: No. If Obama was a marxist, he’d have run as a marxist and created marxist legislation, not fix the issues he could pass through or triple the stock in the health industry.

      POS: No. He‘s a charismatic guy and isn’t in it for himself, as proven by his health-care bill, which prevents insurance companies from denying women and children on the basis that they are women and children. I’m sure there are other ethical bills out there, but that’s the big one.

      I think this is going to turn out one of two ways.

      A – Scooby doo Ending “And I would have gotten away with it if it wasn’t for those meddling ~insert appropriate thing here~” or

      B- how I would love for a scooby doo cartoon to end, the villian actually has a gun and decides to use it since he doesnt want to risk further interference from those that would stop him. ~chuckle~

      Whether not we’ll be armed/resist in comparison is up to you.
