‘We Will Not Comply’: Catholic Leaders Distribute Letter Slamming Obama Admin Contraceptive Mandate

We’ve covered the Catholic Church’s ongoing battle with the Obama administration over contraception health care mandates for quite some time. Over the weekend, though, the stand-off took an unusual turn, as Catholic churches across America read a letter to congregants that perfectly encapsulated the church’s stance against the impending federal requirements.
The Church’s vocal arguments against the Obama administration are centered upon a Health and Human Services Department requirement that employers must include contraception and abortion-inducing drugs in health-care coverage. While this requirement doesn’t apply to houses of worship, it will force Catholic colleges, hospitals and other Christian groups to provide these drugs despite their faith-based opposition to them.
Many of these organizations, despite not being, themselves, churches, are intrinsically rooted in religious belief systems that stand firmly opposed to medications and procedures that would terminate the life of an unborn child. These deeply-rooted moral codes, which drive the groups’ work, will be impeded, Catholic leaders say, should the Obama administration continue with its planned mandate.
Recently, the federal government made one small concession surrounding the requirement, as officials decided to give church-affiliated hospitals and organizations another year before they will be forced to comply with the coverage restrictions.

Archbishop Timothy Dolan (AP)
“In effect, the president is saying we have a year to figure out how to violate our consciences,” Cardinal-designate Timothy M. Dolan, archbishop of New York and president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, recently said.
Over the weekend, the Catholic Church’s letter went beyond simply issuing oppositional rhetoric to media. Instead, priests read an open note to congregations across the country, dubbing the administration‘s take on women’s health and religious violations as an attack on their faith. In the letter, Bishops highlighted what they called “an alarming and serious matter,“ as their words contended that the federal government has ”dealt a heavy blow” to the Catholic population.
In it, Catholic leaders went on to say that the Church “cannot—we will not—comply with this unjust law,” as it violates the Catholic conscience. Additionally, the church says that it is faced with a difficult decision — either comply and violate its faith or drop coverage for employees and suffer the consequences. The letter urges congregants to take action and to call Congress in an attempt to overturn the regulation.

While there were some variations in the letter, as it was personalized by each Bishop, here’s the text that was sent out by the Bishop of Marquette (Michigan):
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
I write to you concerning an alarming and serious matter that negatively impacts the Church in the United States directly, and that strikes at the fundamental right to religious liberty for all citizens of any faith. The federal government, which claims to be “of, by, and for the people,” has just been dealt a heavy blow to almost a quarter of those people — the Catholic population — and to the millions more who are served by the Catholic faithful.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced last week that almost all employers,
including Catholic employers, will be forced to offer their employees’ health coverage that includes sterilization, abortion-inducing drugs, and contraception. Almost all health insurers will be forced to include those “services” in the health policies they write. And almost all individuals will be forced to buy that coverage as a part of their policies. In so ruling, the Obama Administration has cast aside the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, denying to Catholics our Nation’s first and most fundamental freedom, that of religious liberty. And as a result, unless the rule is overturned, we Catholics will be compelled to either violate our consciences, or to drop health coverage for our employees (and suffer the penalties for doing so). The Obama Administration’s sole concession was to give our institutions one year to comply.
We cannot—we will not—comply with this unjust law. People of faith cannot be made second class citizens. We are already joined by our brothers and sisters of all faiths and many others of good will in this important effort to regain our religious freedom. Our parents and grandparents did not come to these shores to help build America’s cities and towns, its infrastructure and institutions, its enterprise and culture,
only to have their posterity stripped of their God given rights. In generations past, the Church has always been able to count on the faithful to stand up and protect her sacred rights and duties. I hope and trust she can count on this generation of Catholics to do the same. Our children and grandchildren deserve nothing less. And therefore, I would ask of you two things. First, as a community of faith we must commit ourselves to prayer and fasting that wisdom and justice may prevail, and religious liberty may be restored. Without God, we can do nothing; with God, nothing is impossible. Second, I would also recommend visiting www.usccb.org/conscience,to learn more about this severe assault on religious liberty, and how to contact Congress in support of legislation that would reverse the Obama Administration’s decision.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
+Alexander K. Sample
Most Reverend Alexander K. Sample
Bishop of Marquette
This is the latest development in the spat between the federal government and the Catholic Church. While contraception is a major problem dividing the two parties, other developments have added to the relational deterioration. Among the developments, the Department of Health and Human Services decided to end funding to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops last year.

Pope Benedict XVI (AP)
Rather than continuing to allocate money to a special program the bishops group oversaw to assist victims of modern-day slavery (i.e. human trafficking), the administration, instead, chose to give the funds to three non-Catholic groups. The bishops conference had refused to refer trafficking victims to receive contraceptives or abortions, so the American Civil Liberties Union sued and HHS decided to provide funds to groups that would refer women for these services.
Then there’s gay marriage — another contentious issue. The administration’s stance of not defending traditional marriage also contradicts Catholic teaching.
As for the health care regulation — a tenet that abortion-rights groups heralded when it was introduced last summer — there’s no telling how the situation will end, as the Church seems adamant about its refusal to comply.

In September, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops called the regulation “an unprecedented attack on religious liberty.” In November, The Catholic Advocate PAC launched an attack campaign against the Obama administration as well. To these responses, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said late last year that the Church’s “conscience thing” puts woman at risk (yes, she’s a Catholic).
In the end, there will be dire results, it seems, should the administration proceed as planned.

Posted on January 30, 2012 at 11:17amThis is by DESIGN. The government is forcing all catholic/religeous institutions into a corner. Either give in and leave your morals at the door or stand firm and refuse to offer healthcare to your workers. Why? Obama is betting that they will stand firm and no longer offer healthcare to millions of workers & their children. That then puts all these uninsured workers directly into the coming Exchanges and onto the government healthcare roles. The infastructure is almost complete for government run healthcare, now they just need the people to either choose to join or be forced to join by employers dropping coverage. THIS is what’s going on here and what WILL happen in the end.
Without ObamaCare, none of this can/would be happening. Don’t call and beg for an exemption, call and DEMAND that ObamaCare be repealed. This is just the beginning of the nightmare of government run healthcare.

While we are at it, California North needs to work to get rid of Nancy Pelosi, not because she is a Progressive or anything like that, no, no, no, it is because she is a liar and goes against her religious beliefs, rather blasphemous actually, and as a public speaker, her hatred for life and this country needs to be removed from the public arena, not to take her freedom of speech and religion away or anything like that, but because we the people should not have to pay anyone who has these beliefs.

This is *exactly* what I was talking about on the gay marriage story several days ago. This is all about dictating (because that’s what Dictators do) to the Church what we will do.
The example I used was: under the guise of “civil rights,” eventually the Administration will move to force churches to begin granting religious marriages to homosexuals- flying in the face of their morals and mores.
Take gay marriage out, put abortion and contraception in, and this is exactly the same thing.

That does not mean they had a major gaffe and support Obamacare and his stance on abortion. “According to the Catholic bishops of the United States, the current health care system is in need of fundamental reform.” Do you agree the current system is adequate? Report Post »For the unbeliever, the fear of God is the fear of the judgment of God and eternal death, which is eternal separation from God (Luke 12:5; Hebrews 10:31). For the believer, the fear of God is something much different. The believer’s fear is reverence of God. Hebrews 12:28-29 is a good description of this: “Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our ’God is a consuming fire.’” This reverence and awe is exactly what the fear of God means for Christians. This is the motivating factor for us to surrender to the Creator of the Universe.

Thank you for that clarification TG. It was well said. But you know what I’m talking about here. This craziness has got to stop! Right Wing Religious fanaticism in the name of God is WRONG. Using God as your tool to spew forth your agenda is abhorrent. Not just from this guy, from ANYONE. Including these “so called” political leaders. It makes me furious to hear God mentioned whenever someone has a political agenda that they want to force down someone else’s throat. It‘s wrong and immoral to use God as your weapon for every single argument that can’t be settled amongst you. This is what starts wars. And God doesn’t want that!
The idea that God is the bottom line on EVERYTHING you people do on earth is absurd. At some point you all need to start taking responsibility for your own actions and stop using God as an excuse. “Oh, God wants me to do this, God wants me to do that”. God wants me to punish the wicked and strike them down”. It’s gotten WAY out of hand what you folks think God is and what he represents. God doesn’t want you to fight and hurt and kill each other. Certainly not in his name.
If you fear God, even as you have described it, then you better get it together down there because there WILL be a day of reckoning and I‘m sorry to say that the majority of you won’t be getting a room at the Inn.

They, including Catholic Pelosi, wanted Obama and now they have to deal with his athieism. We are asol in the process of being fooled again by Romney who wanted and got a health care program for Massachusettes that is identical to Obamacare. I seriously doubt that Romney will eliminate Obamacare if he is elected. He will only tweak it around the edges. Romney is a pure 100% liberal.

Posted on January 30, 2012 at 3:27pmWait just a minute here goofballs–
Quite a few of you here are ignoring the obvious fact that nothing in this mandate does anything like “supply” anyone with contraceptives or abortions. Is it that none of you actually understand what insurance is? All it means is that contraceptives are covered IF the person chooses to use them.
So many of you claim that choice is a key aspect of faith–well, anyone at these Catholic institutions can choose not to use contraception. The idea that having it covered under insurance is equal to giving people contraceptives implies that it was cost rather than faith that was preventing them from using it in the first place.
Everyone take a deep breath and THINK.

The Church has always held a position to help those in need and have voiced for decades that we should give access to healthcare to all that need it. But never did they endorse Obama nor Obamacare and came out fully against him and this policy.

During the ObamaCare debate my Church, St. Thomas More of Sarasota FL, added universal healthcare to the Prayer of the Faithful. During the 2008 elections, while my husband and I were placing pro-life leaflets on the cars parked at the Epiphany Cathedral in Venice Florida during the early morning Mass, we were admonished by parishioners to get out and stop dividing the faithful. I would have never thought that being pro-life would have been a divisive issue in the Catholic Church. Posted on January 31, 2012 at 7:28amDecades ago, when politics and religion were removed from the general discourse, our country began to take a turn for the worse.
It amazes me that people of faith and conscience continue to adhere to the ideas that you should never talk about religion and politics, and similarly that you shouldn’t mix politics and religion.
Our founders knew that only by creating a government based on belief in God, and adhering to God’s Natural Law, could the United States avoid the pitfalls of the monarchies, dictatorships, and other forms of authoritarian government prevalent throughout Europe.
We have strayed from their wisdom. By eliminating the powerful influence of Faith, our country has spiraled downward to a point where Bioethicists compare terminating human life to weeding a garden, and it doesn’t even make the headlines. Participation in and acceptance of abortion is being forced upon everyone, regardless of religious convictions, and our pulpits are silent.
Until we become a people brave enough to say we’ve had enough, we will continue to have our rights stripped from us, and our freedoms destroyed. That applies to us as individuals, as Americans, and as Catholics.
We must become brave enough to bring our faith to the forefront and stand for what we believe in.
We must unapologetically base our political decisions on our foundations of faith and morality, and not back down when confronted by those who wish to eliminate faith from the public square.

Report Post »This is just one more attack on in the war that Obama and his ilk have been waging for years on the Constitution.
Slowly but surely the rights that the Constitution was supposed to guarantee are being eroded. Without the Constitution we have no foundation, no control on what the Government does.
In most cases you do not win a war with one big attack. It is a series of smaller attacks that weaken your enemy to the point they can no longer fight.
This, in many peoples eyes, is just an attack against Catholics and therefore not worthy of much attention if you aren’t Catholic.
Next step will be something else targeting another small segment of the population. This will continue until we will have a virtual, if not actual, dictatorship and everyone will be sitting around scratching their heads wondering when all of this happened.
Instead of focusing on defending your own little section of society or your religion defend the Constitution because the Constitution, if followed as written, protects not just you but everyone regardless of race, creed or religious belief.

No constitutional rights are being taken away – Catholics and anyone else is free as ever to exercise and follow their religious conscience! Just say NO to using the new services included in your health plan! ! The fact is, that this is an attempt standardize which procedures need to be covered in any health plan offered to employees. It has nothing to do with forcing anyone. Just because most basic TV packages include pornographic channels, doesn’t mean that everyone will automatically watch them or that people need to ditch the TV-provider! Is the Catholic church afraid that catholics will not follow their own religious conscience? Is that why they need to make sure that no-one has access to offending procedures, regardless of that individual’s convictions? There is no conspiracy! Wake up! Lots of catholics are already using contraception. This smacks more of a Republican attack on Democrats than anything else!

If liberals take Jefferson’s letter to the Danbury Baptists seriously and consider it a guide to understanding the first Amendment, then they must also accept this paragraph from the letter: “Adhering to this expression of the supreme will of the nation in behalf of the rights of conscience, I shall see with sincere satisfaction the progress of those sentiments which tend to restore to man all his natural rights, convinced he has no natural right in opposition to his social duties.” None of our natural rights can be in opposition to social duties — that is, we cannot be compelled by government to act against rights bestowed on us by God, including life.

These are the very same people that in defense of the unborn, would gladly throw the switch on a condemned prisoner. And it is also they who would deny YOU the right to decide your own fate. If you were diagnosed with a terminal illness and all you had to look forward to was excruciating pain and suffering (not to mention the suffering of your loved ones) wouldn’t you want to be the one to decide how and when you will leave this earth? In fact, I would like to address the individual that uses the avatar Jesush.Christ. Are you a man or a woman? Why did you choose that stage name? Are you mentally stable? Do you realize there are people like me that owe everything including their lives to Christ Jesus and you are insulting us by using his name in vain? Do you know the penalty for this? Why do you want to cause innocent strangers harm? Are you mocking God? (on purpose) I understand religiosity is a symptom of schizophrenia and you certainly would not be held responsible if you were ill, but if you’re not ill I have to think you are ridiculing our God and our faith on purpose. Shame on you. While I am yaking, let me remind all the followers of the way: We have but one authority on earth and that is the bible. Speak where it speaks and be quiet where it is silent. I’m not mocking you. I’m not mocking God either. In fact, I’m really happy for you that you have “JESUS” in your life. But your reaction to my presence and what I’m saying on this ridiculous web site only proves my point about how God (or me) is used as sort of exclusive benefit of membership to a right wing ideology. As though the “Other side” does not have God (or me ) in their lives.
One (shall remain nameless) subscriber wrote, “These people are Godless HEATHENS and should therefor be destroyed”.
And this is just one guy’s remarks. As I’m sure you are aware, this web site is chock full of hate and fear and racists attitudes that are so purulent as to make my skin crawl. All I‘m trying to do is remind people that we are all God’s children and that by claiming an exclusive to his love (because someone else has a different idea on how to live) you yourself are mocking God (and me) and it hurts. It hurts to see people suffer out of fear and ignorance. It hurts to see the way man treats his fellow man. Just spend a day reading the comments left on this web site and you will start to understand what I’m talking about and why I feel I must speak up.
I’m appalled by the lack of awareness by the masses as to what God truly is. God does

Their “liberation theology” was rampant at the time, and I removed myself from the church PERMANENTLY since the separation of church and state works both ways…..the State doesn‘t meddle in church affairs and the Church doesn’t meddle in government politics. This is the result….

Posted on January 30, 2012 at 11:01amI did not hear this letter read in my church either on Sunday but that is not to say it wasn’t because we got there a little late and it could have been read before mass. However, I have a strong suspicion that is wasn‘t read because normally such an important letter is included in the weekly bulletin or made available to the parishioners in the entrance to church which it wasn’t.
As for the Catholic Church as someone else said, they supported the ObamaCare atrocity and they have reaped what they have sewn. I am a Roman Catholic all of my 52 years but I have a lot of issues with the hierarchy of the Church, including our local bishop here in Albany, NY. As one commentator said on a the Tom Sullivan show on FOX Business Network Saturday, if you take federal money (and the Catholic Church does) you really don’t have an option not to follow this edict. There in lies the largest problem in this nation. Taking money from the government means you will some day have to live by its rules, even if they are contrary to your principles. AMERICA’S CHICKENS HAVE COME HOME TO ROOST!

Posted on January 30, 2012 at 11:24amActually, in further thinking about this–a letter from the archbishop was read 2 weeks ago before the Mass, about this occurance just happening–but no stand was made yet!!. My problem with this whole situation is that the Catholic Church will FINALLY make a stand but than turn around and tolerate politicians like Pelosi in the Church??????????????????????.

Posted on January 30, 2012 at 11:44amto Mycomet123, calm down. this letter did not come from the Pope, it came from a bishop in Michigan. Maybe he didn’t get it to your local bishop. It was not read at mass i attended either. And it wasn’t mandatory that it be read. You are reading it here, so now CALMLY take it to your parish priest and ask if he has seen it. If not, there is your answer as to why it wasn’t read in church. Don‘t assume that just because you didn’t hear it in church that your pastor is doing something wrong. We must fight this attack on our Catholic hospitals and other institutions, but you can’t get hysterical about it, because that will lead to irrational acts. Instead, talk to your pastor, pray, and write to your congressmen. this last part is so very important because they are the ones that can change it. Peace be with you.

Posted on January 30, 2012 at 1:37pmIf it was not read at your church, take the initiative and PRINT THIS LETTER and distribute it to the congregation yourself, as I plan to do at my Baptist church! This is not a Catholic issue alone… this is a Christian issue. Make them all aware as many are just not informed of this.

Posted on January 30, 2012 at 10:15amThank God someone is standing up to Obama and “PlasticPelosi”, I am sure other faiths will be happy to go to court with them, in defense of religious liberty. I know I will stand with them, no problem. They cannot dictate to faiths what they “have” to do. It’s totaly unconstitutional, not that matters to this administration, but the Catholic church has the money to fight this, and whatever I can do, I will.

Posted on January 30, 2012 at 10:15amThe Federal Government has absolutely no authority under the Constitution to dictate anything to the Church. In fact, they are specifically forbidden to establish any law restricting the free exercise of Religion. The Church should simply not comply and dare the President to send in troops.

Posted on January 30, 2012 at 11:51amI was appalled that so many Catholics voted for Obama. I hope that they now can see just how wrong they were and what they helped to unleash on this country. And I had better not hear liberals screaming that the statement means the Church can’t be tax exempt because it is being political. No mention is made of Obama or the Democrat party – only that Catholics are being asked to go against their consciences. This is FAR less political than what we have heard coming from the pulpits of many black churches, and liberals don’t seem to mind that at all.

Posted on January 30, 2012 at 12:27pmMy Sister-in-law was a “Catholic” (she hasn’t ever been active in the Church) who voted for Obama. But it wasn’t just Catholics who put him in office, it was Christians in general. My Uncle, an Episcopalian also voted for him as did his sister an Episcopalian Bishop.
Christians of all denominations must choose NOW between their faith and their politics. Voting for someone who openly professes the desire to take an innocent life whether they justify it using the Constitution, State’s Rights or denying it is “life” (the same people scream bloody murder when an amoeba is threatened) is the same as taking the life yourself.
The Catholic church has many faults; Guided by God, but organized by man, it has stood silently by far too long in fear of disenfranchising many of its members who use artificial forms of birth control. I am glad to see that it is finally starting to take a stand.

Posted on January 30, 2012 at 1:53pmAgreed. Nancy Pelosi and any Catholic politician that is pro-Choice should be refused communion (if she even receives it) and excommunicated until she changes position.
Let her claim she’s a Catholic. The Pope can just release a statement saying she’s been excommunicated.

Posted on January 30, 2012 at 12:17pmThere is a “separation between church and state”, for a reason. I don’t need the government in my church, and I don’t want the church dictating my politics. Politians made that perfectly clear when they removed prayer from schools. The only solution is to drop all government sponsored health coverage and have the Vatican open up their pocketbooks and cover all Christians health bills. The government already does this with welfare.
