‘We Won’t Duck the Tough Issues…We Will Lead!’: Excerpts From Paul Ryan’s Speech

The Mitt Romney campaign has released the following excerpts from vice presidential choice Paul Ryan’s Saturday announcement speech:

Mitt Romney is a leader with the skills, the background and the character that our country needs at a crucial time in its history. Following four years of failed leadership, the hopes of our country, which have inspired the world, are growing dim; and they need someone to revive them. Governor Romney is the man for this moment; and he and I share one commitment: we will restore the dreams and greatness of this country.
For the last 14 years, I have proudly represented Wisconsin in Congress.  There, I have focused on solving the problems that confront our country, and turning ideas into action; and action into solutions.
I am committed, in mind and heart, to putting that experience to work in a Romney Administration. This is a crucial moment in the life of our nation; and it is absolutely vital that we select the right man to lead America back to prosperity and greatness.
That man is standing next to me. His name is Mitt Romney. And he will be the next president of the United States
Let me say a word about the man Mitt Romney will replace. No one disputes President Obama inherited a difficult situation.  And, in his first 2 years, with his party in complete control of Washington, he passed nearly every item on his agenda.  But that didn’t make things better.
In fact, we find ourselves in a nation facing debt, doubt and despair.
This is the worst economic recovery in 70 years.
Unemployment has been above 8 percent for more than three years, the longest run since the Great Depression. Families are hurting.

We have the largest deficits and the biggest federal government since WW II.
Nearly 1 out of 6 Americans are in poverty–the worst rate in a generation.  Moms and dads are struggling to make ends meet.
Household incomes have dropped by more than $4,000 over the past four years.
Whatever the explanations, whatever the excuses, this is a record of failure.
I represent a part of America that includes inner cities, rural areas, suburbs and factory towns.  Over the years I have seen and heard from a lot from families, from those running small businesses, and from people who are in need.  But what I have heard lately troubles me the most.  There is something different in their voice and in their words. What I hear from them are diminished dreams, lowered expectations, uncertain futures.
I hear some people say that this is just “the new normal.” High unemployment, declining incomes and crushing debt is not a new normal.  It’s the result of misguided policies.  And next January, our economy will begin a comeback with the Romney Plan for a Stronger Middle Class that will lead to more jobs and more take home pay for working Americans.
I believe my record of getting things done in Congress will be a very helpful complement to Governor Romney’s executive and private sector success outside Washington. I have worked closely with Republicans as well as Democrats to advance an agenda of economic growth, fiscal discipline, and job creation.
I’m proud to stand with a man who understands what it takes to foster job creation in our economy, someone who knows from experience, that if you have a small business—you did build that.
At Bain Capital, he launched new businesses and he turned around failing ones – companies like Staples, Bright Horizons and Sports Authority, just to name a few. Mitt Romney created jobs and showed he knows how a free economy works.
At the Olympics, he took a failing enterprise and made it the pride of our entire nation.
As governor of Massachusetts, he worked with Democrats and Republicans to balance budgets with no tax increases, lower unemployment, increase income and improve people’s lives.
In all of these things, Mitt Romney has shown himself to be a man of achievement, excellence and integrity.
We Americans look at one another’s success with pride, not resentment, because we know, as more Americans work hard, take risks, and succeed, more people will prosper, our communities will benefit, and individual lives will be improved and uplifted.
The commitment Mitt Romney and I make to you is this:
We won’t duck the tough issues…we will lead!
We won’t blame others…we will take responsibility!
We won’t replace our founding principles…we will reapply them!
We will honor you, our fellow citizens, by giving you the right and opportunity to make the choice:
What kind of country do we want to have?
What kind of people do we want to be?
We can turn this thing around.  Real solutions can be delivered.  But, it will take leadership.  And the courage to tell you the truth.

Mitt Romney is this kind of leader.  I‘m excited for what lies ahead and I’m thrilled to be a part of America’s Comeback Team. And together, we will unite America and get this done.  Thank you.

Encinom, as usual you answer your own question with your own pathetic rant. How is Obama a socialist? It is because he wants to expand medicare, food stamps, and social security. We should all be working to get people off of these programs and back to the point where we ALL can keep more of our own money. Why are you opposed to keeping your own money? I am not a wealthy person by any means. But if I did not have to pay a social security and medicare tax each month, I would be even better off and would be able to save for a home or put money away for retirement. It doesn’t anger you to know that there are people who live off of the government? Have you ever been to a Wal-Mart and seen one of those big people on an electric shopping cart using food stamps to pay for their junk food? And then knowing that you are paying for their diabetic treatments? Government should stop protecting these people and start protecting people like me who take care of myself, work hard, and don’t spend more than we can afford. I guess people like you just baffle me…

How is refusing to raise taxes on the “rich” going to raise taxes on the middle class? And if you think it is okay to let social security and medicare just go broke instead of reforming them, you need to check your morals. Yes lets leave it like it is and then just cut grandma off completely when there is no money left. I don’t want your “safety nets”. Me and millions of young people like me want OUT of your government programs. Why should we be FORCED to stay in them. Oh that’s right because your party is SOCIALIST and needs to force everybody in these programs.

Show news footage of all the welfare program abuses. Able bodied people saying they are owed welfare checks. People using food stamps next to their beer and cigs. Show the school system failures. Then say “Americans know the difference between helping the poor, and waste and fraud, but if you try to reform the broken system they accuse you of wanting to starve people, kill people, and throw grandma off the cliff. One in every 3 Americans are on government assistance now. Americans know the system is broke and needs to be reformed. Obama will only increase the programs and spending, we will reform them!”

The immorality of cutting programs for the poor and hunger by the Catholic Bishops:

“The Catholic bishops of the United States recognize the serious deficits our country faces, and we acknowledge that Congress must make difficult decisions about how to allocate burdens and sacrifices and balance resources and needs,” Bishop Blaire added. “However, deficit reduction and fiscal responsibility efforts must protect and not undermine the needs of poor and vulnerable people. The proposed cuts to programs in the budget reconciliation fail this basic moral test.”

Ryan’s plan fails the BASIC MORAL TEST. But, what to expect from a man that has rejected Christ and worships the goddess of greed Ayn Rand.

So I could care less what some liberal Bishops who are abondoning the Bible for Politics have to say. Read the Parable of the Talents as told by JESUS. And tell me what God feels about able bodied folks refusing to work and produce. God says to help the poor, but the poor back then were the disabled and widows and ophans. Not women with babies daddies and able bodied people who just want a check and don’t want to work. People who collect food stamps so they don’t have to cut back on their cigarette budget in order to buy food, or who are on some government program but still manage to afford smart phones and cable tv. If this stuff does not make you angry, you must be one of those on the government dole. Sitting at home waiting for your check and lecturing us on morals.

Sorry MtGirl, but you can’t be serious if you are going to call the USCCB liberal or socialist. You are just a typical fox/beck viewer ill-informed and can only speak in talking points. Also, its a parable. not to be taken literal. The Parable of Talents has nothing to do with commerce, but with seeking converts and preaching the gospel. Learn to read in context and not just allow others to tell what to believe. Christ never put limits on helping the poor, the hungery, etc. The Beatitudes don’t comply with the Ayn rand vision of the world Ryan has.

I laugh at how you so called Christians, believe the Parable of Talents in about commerce and fail to remember Matthew 25:34 . How many of you good Christians, who deny your brothers out of Ayn Rand’s greed believe you are going to be among those going to heaven.

The Americans had been in freefall in a barrel going over Niagara Falls since Ronald Reagan became US President. The problem is that Republicans did not know which way was up The barrel hit the rocks when Obama was elected. No one knew the peril the country was in until August of 2008. The media has not functioned as a free press. Everyone in media has to be paid. The more that is paid, the more media is received. You don’t too much for free these days. Dissent has been marginalized. So much for free speech.

I’ll never vote for Romney/Ryan as it moves the nation in a direction away from where we need to be. Instead of addressing the increasing reality of mass unemployment as humans are increasingly replaced at their jobs by ever more competent machines, Romney/Ryan will adress issues such as a supposed lacka of business investment. As humans continue to be replaced by machines in the workplace, although at a much faster rate than we’ve observed historically, unemployment will increase, demand will suffer, and the whole economic system may collapse. Unless Romney and Ryan begin to speak of a transition to a post labor economy, I’ll never vote for them.

In a healthy economy where entrepeneurs are encouraged to innovate, leading to plentiful jobs, automation is a good thing. Traditionally, you would be correct. Now our machines are acquiring cognitive abilities that were once the sole domain of humans: language translation, image recognition, contextual analysis, machine vision, and other forms of AI. For example, Foxconn is adding a million robots in their factories to work alongside their human workers. The work in the future will be work that isn’t easily automated like higher order cognitive tasks. Even doctors aren’t safe from automation. With systems like IBM’s Watson acquiring all our medical knowledge and synthesizing it into diagnoses by probability, even doctors should be less in demand than they are now.

      Truthdarts,

Lower taxes leading to higher rates of investment:

Right now, we have plenty of spare productive capacity therefore, tax cuts, at least in the current economy, will not spur new investment. The excess productive capacity must be utilized before any meaningful investments are made.

Second, low tax rates do not necessarily correlate to higher levels of output: see the image linked to below.

      http://www.washingtonpost.com/rf/image_606w/WashingtonPost/Content/Blogs/ezra-klein/StandingArt/tax%20rates%20and%20economic%20growth%20cap.jpg?uuid=o16HopwKEeCAF-FDB7JFGg

      Redistribution has worked:

Many European nations have a strong social safety net and yet have a high standard of living. See the Scandinavian countries for examples.

We already allow redistribution to occur by the way our economy works. Economies are structured by rules, regulations, human interactions, and such. Our economy is not some organic entity that grew in the absence of a governing framework. As such, the way we choose to structure our economy determines how goods and services are allocated. We have chosen to structure our economy in a way that benefits capital owners, the capitalists. I’m not necessarily against this. It has been a highly effective system. However, let‘s not pretend that our system isn’t currently aggregating wealth more now than before in the hands of fewer people. For example automation has enabled production of goods and services with fewer la

This by itself is fantastic. We have more for everyone, on average. However, it does tip the scales towards capital owners and against the laborers because of the supply versus demand for labor. Here is the moral question: is it right for capital owners and others to reap the benefits of technological progress and other structural changes in the economy at the expense of others? There will be winners and losers given economic change. If the economy grows faster than the population does, then there is more for everyone. However, can we make both labor and capital owners better off by taking some from the capital owners, the “windfall” they received, and help labor, who lost to economic change?

I never claimed I was against technological advancement. I’m very much for it. I just see now that we‘re seeing the start of a post labor economy and that we absolutely must be ahead of the curve on this if we’re to minimize economic turmoil in the transition. We need to start thinking about how to distribute goods and services fairly when human labor is no longer the means by which we do that.

(As a side note, I’m not even sure if human labor by itself is a fair or optimal means of distributing goods and services anyway. I can see the need to some extent for people to have an incentive to be productive. I’d never argue against trying to avoid that moral hazard. However, some people being more talented than others due to natural talent (luck), for example, lends itself to the idea that many people got screwed by life’s lottery when they were born. It isn’t right that some people have only a chance at low wages while others reap the benefit of good fortune.)

When inflation rates are factored in, we have negative real interest rates. The rest of the world is paying us to hold their money yet we refuse to borrow to make massive investments in infrastructure with a positive NPV even though such projects would lead to higher growth rates in the future.

The issue with debt is the debt incurred outside of recessions. Not during recessions. If Congress had raised taxes and cut spending during periods of economic growth, counter-cyclical policies, then we wouldn’t be here talking about debt levels now and Obama and Congress would have been politically able to apply more stimulus at the start of the recession.

We could care less if gays get married, but we know this isn’t about their rights, it is about taking away ours. The Boy Scouts (a private organization with Christian roots) should be banned, fined, sued; because they do not want gay scout masters camping alone in the woods with little boys. If gay marriage is government sanctioned you guys will go after EVERY Christian oganization that believes homosexuallity is wrong and use government force to shut them down if they do not except it. See there is the core of liberal thought, they believe everything is a RIGHT and thus must be provided and catered to by society. A marriage license is not a right, just like a driver’s license is not a right. Society has defined certain rules to obtain both and you cannot have that license if you chose not to follow those rules. In our society legal marriage is defined as one man and one woman who are not related and over the age of 18. If you want to marry your sister, marry multiple people, marry a minor, or marry someone of the same sex, it is not a legal marriage. Now I do not believe homosexuals should be harmed, imprisoned, or harrassed. They have a right to their life as much as I do to mine. If they want to get married, have a cerimony, call themselves married – go right ahead. But my point and I noticed you did not address it in your answer, is this is not about their rights, it is about mine. Do you believe Christians have a right to believe homosexuallity is immoral and that private organizations have a right to say they do not approve of and will not include homosexuals? If a wedding photographer or a Christian venue refuses to participate in a gay wedding, do you support the government shutting them down?

Unable to accept the truth, they have spent the last three years in racist lies.
