‘Wealthy’ Congressman Explains Why ‘Class Warfare Has Never Created a Job’

Wealthy Congressman Explains Why Class Warfare Has Never Created a JobBusiness owner and Republican congressman John Fleming appeared on MSNBC Monday to explain why raising his own personal income tax — a measure encouraged by President Obama — would prove detrimental to his businesses and prevent him from continuing to create jobs.

Fleming, who warned his MSNBC host that “class warfare has never created a job,” clarified that while he might be better off financially than most, only a small fraction of his $6.3 million in earnings is left over after covering expenses and reinvesting in his businesses.
Fleming, who owns several Subway and UPS franchises, stated that additional taxes on net earnings would amount to “money taken out of capital for reinvestment for creating more jobs. … So the more you tap that down, the less jobs that are gonna be created.”

“I would say that since my net income … the amount that I have to reinvest to my business and feed my family is more like $600,000 of that $6.3 million. And, so by the time I feed my family I have, you know, maybe $400,000 left over to invest in new locations, upgrade my locations, buy new equipment, all of that,” Fleming stated.

Meanwhile, MSNBC’s Chris Jansing seemed less than understanding, and pressed that average Americans would not be sympathetic to Fleming’s position.

Watch the congressman explain why being successful in business is a virtue, not a vice:

$200,000 does seem like a lot when you first look at it, but think of it this way. He owns several franchises of Subway and UPS stores. He has worked hard to get to where he is, and he deserves a higher standard of living. If you’re jealous, get off your A$$ and work hard like he did. He has to worry about the price of sugar, think about how the books balance, hire attorneys, accountants, etc., worry about farmer’s strikes and where his vegetables come from for the sandwiches, etc. It’s not an easy job. He didn’t start out having $200,000 for his family. Trust me, if you make it where people can work hard, own several franchises and then feed their family on $50,000, do you really think anyone will do it?

The saddest part of this is people thinking others are not paying “enough”, and that the rich are greedy, uncaring, and certainly not paying “their fair share” as Obama keeps spewing. Are there some bad actors, of course. But most people who start a business, become successful, have found their passion, their talents and forged them into a product or service that others want or need. And for that we all should be grateful. These people have worked years and more hours in any given day then those of us who don’t have the same ambitions.
So when those on the left complain about the rich, their fancy houses, etc.they are actually revealing something rotten in their own souls, envy and greed, yes Greed. And what really amazes me is these same people who demonize the job produces in this country hang on every word of some rich Hollywood type who share their own hate America ideology.
So tomorrow when you get up, and go to your 9-5 job, that is if you bother to have one, get into some gratitude. You could be living in a mud hut like Obummer’s 1/2 brother.

@Exrepublisheep – $200K to keep his family and put money away for retirement – that is called his earnings… You know this as a “salary” – if his annual famly expenses consume $200K/year, and Obama decides to take another, say, 10% of his company’s earnings ($60K off of $600K, in his example), will his family suddenly learn to live on $140K/year OR will he now have $340K to invest in his business? He will have less to invest, and that rarely leads to creating more jobs.

Let’s not forget, this man also has to keep a residence in not only his home state, but also in D.C. for his Rep. position in Congress. Every other Senator and Congressman earns about $170K/year and DON’T provide hundreds of jobs in the private sector – why is his $200K/year lifestyle so offensive to you?

They could donate millions to a good cause and be attacked with claims of ulterior motives. Now the left on the other hand they do nothing but hoard their money ya know guys like Rangel, Geithner, Obama, Michael Moore and the countless drones within the socialist party. Its the peoples fault they are allowed this double standard! Too much of turning the other cheek with the “wont stoop to their level mentality” I got news for ya folks they are way ahead and winning b/c no one will call them on the garbage they do.

Gotta applaud the congressman for spelling out how business works. Majority of socialists dont really know they only know how to use people and manipulate situations to make money. Or they write books and do speeches. They dont know what its like to have a staff, have deadlines to meet etc or what it takes to develop a product and put it on the market. No, no but they know how to attack a company that does that and find a way to profit off of it… Al Gore has gotten filthy rich doing it!!! The left hates the truth and that why the PMSNBC host didnt want to hear any of it, he is clueless and thinks all the money goes in a business owners pocket while he nickels and dimes his business and employees! http://SavingtheRepublic.com

But Savingtherepublic, I’m a business owner who has staff and deadlines and would definately be classed as liberal by the people here. I can honestly say that whenever I have hired a new employee, my rate of tax has never ever been a factor in making that decision. The only reason I have ever needed more staff is when I have more work than the amount of employees I currently have can handle. The notion that cutting or raising a businesses tax rate directly affects their ability to hire or fire staff is not accurate.
If your experience in business is contrary to this then I would love to hear your story.

Business owners are affected by tax rates and anybody who claims that they‘re in business but don’t mind paying higher tax rates is not a good business owner.

Hahaha, what a bold faced liar. And you people are eating it right up.

Companies only pay taxes on the money they do not reinvest. Reinvestments like new jobs.

Read that again: Companies do not pay taxes on their gross revenue. Imagine you getting your wages without taxes being deducted from them, then paying for food, rent, car insurance, health insurance and everything else, and only paying taxes on the rest. Sounds good? Hell yes it does. And that’s how companies pay taxes.

Let me explain this to you in simple terms that even a Progressive should be able to understand.

I assume you can grasp the fact that if you increase the tax liability on the Congressman’s taxable income, then he will take home less money everything else being the same. Simple so far, right? But let‘s assume he doesn’t want to take home less money and pay for your sister‘s AFDC rather than his own family’s needs; imagine that. So what does he do? Perhaps he offsets the reduced net income by taking more money out of the business, that is — gives himself a raise, which would “amount to money taken out of capital for reinvestment,” like keeping your brother on the payroll. This is starting to hit your family pretty hard isn’t it Progressive?

You mean he can do that? Yeah, he can do that and probably will. And your brother and sister can thank you and Barry — Thanks brother Progressive.

That darn personal responsibility thing is tough for some folks, but if you pull your head back into the daylight, this could be the start of a great big wonderful world of opportunity for you.

So I am well aquainted with the subject , when my wife hears Obama’s speeches she always says he talks like a Communist I think he is a Communist. People from the former Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc countries can sniff a Communist out in seconds , and often laugh at us when we don’t see it. Anger at their lot in life and jealously toward those who have made better choices. I am not indicating everyone is aware at the time that their choices were not the best. Indoctrinated minds v.s. educated minds and connections are the difference. Many however, won’t pay the price for delayed gratification so they can create wealth and work intelligently to bring increase to the initial investment. It is the entitlement mentality at its worst. Except for the “elitist ruling class” who see themselves as just that. Arrogance, just sheer arrogance for those who think they are entitled and those who want to rule.

The ONLY check IRS should EVER write should be a refund for overpayment of taxes (that is, taxes PAID, not tax credits earned in excess of taxes due)! Our government has broken one of the most basic rules of accounting and good business in tasking IRS to make disbursements that are essentially welfare payments! Whenever I find an article that doesn’t have a message box, I remind Yahoo readers that the most important part of any news story in today’s social media is what you, the reader, thinks. Without the voice of the people attached to the news articles of the day, there is no free press.

Yahoo selectively chooses which articles their readers will be able to comment on. Take for instance today’s interview with Mr. Clinton entitled “Straight Talk with Mr. Clinton on the Economy.” Well anyone who knows Mr. Clinton certainly knows “straight talk” is not Slick Willy’s claim to fame. Yet no message box was provided for that article so that his opinions couldn’t be challenged. That’s why I encourage them to come to the Blaze. I don’t put the .com extension on it because that is against Yahoo policy. I just say the Blaze.

The more we get here, the more we can have a reasonable discussion of the topics that face us and the more outreach we can achieve to effect national change.

By “feed his family” he is referring to housing, education, utilities, etc., I assume. Remember, the more he has left to grow his business, the more jobs he creates, so I WANT him to have more left over so that my friends, family, and others have jobs.

There’s a reason why Thou Shalt Not Covet is in the Ten Commandments. Do you honestly think that simply taking from one person and giving to another is going to improve anything?

The poor will simply remain poor because they received financial gain without any knowledge of how to repeat it on their own. The formerly rich will become poor as well because their incentive to work 80 hour weeks will be effectively destroyed by the redistributive government.

A better idea might be to celebrate and encourage a free market system that allows everyone the opportunity to build their own wealth through hard work or a great idea.

And if he made less money, how, exactly, would you earn more? How would *anyone* earn more in any sustainable way? Government could take his earnings to employ a small number of people for a couple of years, but that would force his businesses to go without reinvestment. Without reinvestment, he can’t keep up with regulated changes, equipment upgrades, rising energy costs, wage increases, safety investments, training personel, innovation, employee bonus programs, etc… His business goes from growth cycles to death cycles, resulting in less for the government to take, so the jobs created by the government go unfunded. Eventually, when he has to close up shop, all of his employees are out of work along with the government employees he financed. This isn’t even considering the other consequences. With his shops closed, those who provide support to his business now have fewer resources (shipping, transportation, fuel, coffee shops, lunch counters, commercial real estate owners, print shops, office supplies and on and on) Therefore those businesses have lower revenue and it snowballs over and over again in a vicious cycle.

There is a HUGE difference between being poor and being helpless! While there migh be some argument for government’s assistance to the helpless, there is NO BASIS whatsoever for government’s intervention with the poor! The way out of poordom is (1) one or more jobs–whatever it takes, (2) spending discipline–spend less than you make, (3) saving and investment–set aside with every paycheck for a rainy day, layoff or unforseen problems and invest in your economy–buy Coca Cola and McDonald’s for starters, then move on to Boeing, Merck, Procter & Gamble, etc–all the companies you patronize with each purchase, trip, medication or personal care product. Then, you gotta wait! Like planting a garden, it takes time, BUT EVERYONE in this country has an equal opportunity to participate! Frankly, the road to wealth is through investment (use the sweat off other’s backs), but you have to take care of your basic needs and essentials first! However, no investment, no reward!

Advocating progressive taxation doesn’t make somebody a Marxist. Every government in history has collected taxes, and there are lots of moral and economic arguments to tax progressively. Rep. Fleming’s Subways ship ingredients and supplies over federally constructed interstate highways. He relies on a literate workforce with basic math skills — most of them educated, no doubt, at the public expense. If his restaurant gets robbed, he calls the police. If it catches fire, he calls the fire department. His business relies on the government more than I do.

For the last ten years, this guy has had the lowest tax rates in generations. If that was going to create jobs and a robust economy, then why hasn’t it? The stark, unavoidable historical truth is that upper bracket tax cuts don’t really stimulate the economy (unless you build yachts) and they certainly don’t help with the debt.

Incidentally, why does it cost Rep. Fleming $200K a year to feed his family? Is he feeding them cash?

What business is it of yours as to how he spends the money HE EARNED? Answer, it isn’t! If he has a mortgage on his home, a car note or 2, top of the line health insurance, dental, life insurance that amounts to 10 times his yearly income so that his family can continue on in his absence, 15% property taxes, retirement savings, private (aka, non-gov’t indoctrination) school tuition or college tuition, and all of his families clothing, food, gas, car insurance, and entertainment to include vacations; I bet it comes pretty close to at least 200k, and if he is making 600k a year and reinvesting 2/3 of it in the creation of his own business assets and some investment in startup companies that wouldn’t otherwise get off the ground, I think he is a freaking superstar!

People like you need to pull your damn hands out of your pockets and get to work instead of coveting what everyone else has. If he can afford something, its his damn business and not yours. He is a small business owner and has nurtured his own investment to create himself wealth and other jobs as a by-product. It’s not like he is a share holder of the federal reserve bank who prints a dollar bill at a cost of 13 cents and loans it to us at a dollar and interest. He also probably isn‘t the one voting to spend all the taxpayer’s dollars on stimulus that causes further inflation and robs from the collective savings of every person on the planet whose money is held in US dollars!

If envy and hateful coveting the success of others (emotion) trumps reason, the righteous foundation of this country has already been washed away. Apparently she’s not very good in math; I‘m surprised she didn’t question his $200,000 expenditure on his family… unless he accounted for the taxes in that value, leaving him with that average $50k left to spend on the family.

Let’s take what he says at face value. He’s only makes $400,000 a year, in addition to Congressional salary, another $175,000. So the guy clears well over a half million dollars a year. But wait, he’s got to “feed his family.” He reminds of that twice. So given that, he still makes well over a half million dollars a year, not matter how much caviar they eat.

That’s a real sob story. But to his claim. If instead of well over a million bucks, if his taxes are raised a few percent, he’s down to half a million bucks. So he can’t go out there and “create jobs.”

No, he can‘t and won’t go out there and “create jobs” because the people who afford to eat at Subway are limited and, for the moment, fixed. Eating out is the first thing you cut out when you’re broke. He’s not going to open another Subway until the people who might eat there, but can’t because they are broke, have some disposable income. He‘s not going to fire anyone if he doesn’t get a tax break (he dodged the question but that’s a fact) nor is he going to hire anyone. He’ll hire, or start a new Subway when the rest of us get tax relief, not when he does.

Tax relief for the working class won‘t send them back to Subway for dinner if they’re still unemployed or they’re struggling to make ends meet because they had to take a low wage job… and all the while prices keep rising.

Sure, you can’t get a boost in sales without consumers, so it seems logical on the surface to put money in consumers hands so they can start shopping. But what is a tax cut for me going to save me? MAYBE $20 a month, unless it’s some kind of amazing tax cut. That isn’t going to get me out shopping.

But if you cut taxes on the wealthy investors and corporations, investment goes up and operating capital increases. That higher capital translates into more jobs and increased production. The jobs provide much more than $20 per month (to the people that get them), and creates more active consumers. Those additional consumers raise demand for products, which prompts business to increase production, which in turn can create more jobs… until we reach a natural balancing point in the economy.

But you won’t get all that with a measly little tax cut for the middle class. I’m in the middle class, and I pay my taxes, but you’d have to completely stop taxing me at all before it would translate into enough dollars to make me change my spending patterns.

That 400k he has left over isnt enough to start up another single location of one of those businesses he owns. In all likely hood he would have to save that to combine with his next years income to get another location up and running. Now. Add in higher taxes that obama is taking about and the upcoming obamacare regulations and even more taxes that he knows about and you can kiss another location and anyone he would hire goodbye. Not to mention higher interest rates on any loans he would have outstanding or god forbid a natural disaster or lawsuit.

Riverdog1, where’s your proof to back up your claims? Anybody who‘s any good at running a business or knows about accounting knows that you’re full of crap.

WAlk into a Lowes, Wal Mart or Home Depot, you will be able to complete a job application. Quite a service provided by these “evil” corporations. After you have done that, walk the street and stop the first homeless person you meet, and advise him or her, you are looking for a job. Ask him or her if they would consider taking your job application. Chances are they have lost their home and businesses, since our “Great Leader” took office. My point being….homeless people don’t hire. Corporations do !

If you watched Fox News Sunday this weekend you heard Paul Ryan articulate it quite well. People who operate Sub-S corporations will suffer. My wife and I have owned our Sub-S business for 30 years. We currently have 5 other employees. We’re just over that $250K line and can hardly make ends meet now. That fool residing in our White House hasn’t a clue.

FREEDOM OR OBAMUNISM – YOU DECIDE!

Ms. Jansing is a useful idiot determined to help The Left destroy the country with more and more taxation and eventual financial collapse. Can’t these fools look to Europe or the old Soviet Bloc and see the errors of their ways? Of course not. Jansing, Obama and the rest are all committed ideologues.

They understand. Admitting they understand prevents them from being able to use class warfare every election cycle.
