Wealthy Socialite and Top Dem Donor Reportedly Dumps U.S. Citizenship (and Tax Burden)

Following Eduardo Saverin’s decision that he no longer wanted to be an American citizen in May– possibly to save tens of millions in taxes– notable socialite and top Democrat donor Denise Rich has followed suit, according to reports.
Though she was nominated for a Grammy for her songwriting, Rich is probably best-known as the ex-wife of Marc Rich, who fled the United States in 1983 when indicted on charges of tax evasion, fraud, racketeering and illegal trading of oil with Iran.
Marc Rich received a presidential pardon on Bill Clinton‘s last day in office in 2001 because of the couple’s generous donations to Clinton library and campaign, according to a 2002 investigation by federal prosecutors and Congress.
Reuters has more information on woman’s decision to renounce the United States in favor of Austria:
Dubbed “Lady Gatsby” by Yachting magazine, Rich owns multiple properties, including a mansion in Aspen, Colorado. She is a frequent habitue of Cannes, Monte Carlo and St. Tropez with celebrities and singers aboard her 157-foot yacht, Lady Joy.
Rich will escape future U.S. taxes but possibly not all current ones. In 2008, Congress imposed an expatriation tax on persons with a net worth of more than $2 million who dump their U.S. citizenship or permanent residency. Under the law, those people owe an “exit tax” on their worldwide property, computed at a fair market value the day before they leave. But tax lawyers say the tax can be reduced or avoided by structuring asset holdings through foreign annuities.
While Austria, like the United States, generally taxes its citizens on their worldwide income, it has generous tax breaks for citizens who spend half the year abroad.
In January, Rich put her 5th Avenue penthouse in New York on the market for $65 million, according to the listing agent, The Corcoran Group. New York property records show Rich acquired a 100 percent stake in the apartment, described by Corcoran as “the epitome of luxury and grandeur,” for $200,000 in 2006. Bonnie Evans, the Corcoran broker for the property, declined to discuss details.
Rich was born in Worcester, Massachusetts but has Austrian citizenship through her deceased father, a lawyer who represented her in a recent lawsuit said. He added that she is making the move “so that she can be closer to her family and to Peter Cervinka, her long-time partner.”
Nearly 1,800 citizens and permanent residents, a record since data was first compiled in 1998, expatriated last year, according to government figures.

Posted on July 9, 2012 at 10:27pmI have researched an exit strategy regarding expatriation, mainly based on 2 decisions. First I can no longer stand the thought of supporting the leeches and parasites that want to steal what I have worked for. That includes the amateurs like the OWS but more importantly the professional parasite that pulls in a government union check or subsidy. The second is based on the simple premise of individual liberty, something I think this police state and over regulated government no longer permits.

John Kerry, Geitner, Oprah, Kennedy… there are loads of examples of the hypocritical Liberals cheating on their taxes, using loopholes, and keeping their money overseas while they simultaneously claim that the Rich republicans are doing it. When they do it and worse, hush… not a peep.

Posted on July 10, 2012 at 3:02amLiberals always gleefully point out any Republican in-fighting. Yes, we try to keep our representatives honest. If they are lying, spending recklessly, being immoral… we call them out and try to get them replaced with a better person. Democrats almost always make excuses and hide any immoral, illicit, dishonest, and hypocritical behavior on their side.

Just split the USA up. If you are a worker, you can live on the Ron Paul side of the country. No public schools. Death penalty exists but no life sentences. If you did something that doesn’t rise to death sentence but too horrible to live with normal people – you are booted out of the country – passport taken. Any illegals caught inside the borders are shot after a judge confirms the person is illegal. No exceptions. Shoot whatever you want into your body but the minute you steal/rob/kill to support the habit – put to death or permanently kicked out of the country.
The people who who want to get felt up by TSA and maintain 800 military bases around the world (RINOS) can live in another part. Last part will belong to illegals/democrats. The RINOs and democrats will all KEEP ss, medicaid/medicare/socialized schools, etc etc. Let them have it all.
Read a few of the OUT OF ASHES series by William W. Johnstone
The books are about the United States breaking up into separate U.S.’s. Started with just Southern USA (SUSA) and Northern NUSA) and eventually the Eastern and Western SUSA’s developed. GREAT READ. GOOD IDEA They were written in the 1980′s – the author is dead but was dead on on what would happen to the country.
I read Treson in the Ashes first and LMAO!!!!!!!!!! It starts with Out of the Ashes.

Posted on July 10, 2012 at 4:57pmIn 2008 when the expatriation tax was done by Charlie Rangle he didn’t mean for there to be any loopholes in the exit tax. When Bill Clinton gave Marc Rich the pardon he didn’t know that the guy owed the IRS 33 Million $$$. As far as Timmy Geither staying and 6 other Zsars going because of tax problems Obama had to have Timmy – he was the only man that could save the country. This is the tip of the ice burg – if the Republicans get control and really stick it to the rich they will be jumping ship like rats leaving a burning ship. Put yourself in their shoes – you make 10 million bucks and give up 6 million in taxes. The new French president is going for 75% – out of 10 million you only get to keep 2.5 million. Thats why Will Smith choked when he was saying the rich needed to pay more, but chocked when he heard that France was going to 75%. He thought, out of 20 Million for one of my movies I get to keep 5 Million.

Posted on July 10, 2012 at 4:11amWell Freebert, there is no “new world” to go to unless you consider Mars or the moon. Wait, Antarctica. There’s a destination. Or how about an under sea colony. Hard to tax you if your twenty thousand leagues under the sea. And generally speaking you wouldn’t have to monetarily support schools of fish. Although, that would be a lot of trouble to go through to start anew. And lets face it, a boomer could blow you out of the water and no one would know. You might consider invading a country and “remove” the indigenous peoples. But that’s the “g” word and that is not a good way to start anew. People tend to frown on genocide. Or you could buy your way into a country. If you’re rich you could become a resident of Costa Rica or Belize. If you have real wealth you can choose the country you want to live in.

Posted on July 9, 2012 at 9:59pmBryan, I can sort of see it both ways. But, I plan to stay out of the class warfare thing altogether. I feel that people should be free to do as they wish for whatever their reason. The democrats like 0bama are doing everything they can to destroy the wealthy out of envy and hatred. They are the ones responsible for running these people out of the country. It’s just funny that we are hearing about the wealthy libs taking flight. Frankly, there a number of others that I would love to see leave the country. Just look at Hollyweird and I think we could start filling aircraft carriers full of them. As for the wealthy who are just trying to secure their families and keep buisnesses afloat in this 0bamanation of a debacle, what would you have them do? Stay hear and taking a government economic raping? Yeah, she is probably a total political reprobate like her former husband, but I think that she has the right to leave with her money. These wealthy people are being told by their political friends in Washington, that the political and economic problems of our country are going to get worse. That’s the distinction in one shot. America needs them? America needs their corrupting influence driving forward the progressive (formerly DemocRat) party? I think not, and good riddance.
In the long run, getting these power players out of the system may be to our benefit. Yes, we lose tax revenue and we lose investment money, but we also lose Dem funding and antagonism. The less Dem finance available, the sooner they can be buried in the trash-heap of history.
Always consider all angles of a move before you declare yourself for or against it.

That’s a wholly communistic concept, that the individual owes his property and work to the nation, and if he decides not to participate in communism, the State gets first dibs on the property and work.
Even the Nazi‘s weren’t that brazen and ham handed.
Report Post »BryanB
Posted on July 10, 2012 at 3:21pmThe United States provided these individuals with the ability to make their wealth. And because there are even harder times comming (food shortages, more deflationary currency, civil unrest and eventually possible civil war) The wealthiest are abandoning all others to save themselves. They owe everything they have to this country. And taking half is fair.
If the wealthy would have renounced their citizenship in 2005, I would have no problem them, or if they waited for everything to get better, and then renounce their citizenship, I would have no problem. Them and their wealth could leave, and I wouldn’t think twice about it. It’s all about the timing.
These wealthy people remind me of a lot of people I see on here, you know the people, the ones that are going to run off with their little bag of gold and hide in the woods or some bunker untill everything gets better. Those people think their going come out of their holes and have a say. When in fact they will be treated as convicted felons and have the same rights, because they left others to stand and fight for Freedom and Liberty, while they hid, and thought of themselves, instead of trusting their providence to God……..

If he did return, he would first have to pay tens of millions of dollars he owes in back taxes, a condition set by Clinton. For Rich, being a fugitive financier living in European luxury seems more appealing.
