‘Weapon of the Future’?: Check Out to the Quadrotor Drone Equipped With a Machine Gun

We’ve seen a lot of quadrotors — those drone-style helicopters — flying in pretty elaborate formations, which could almost be considered creepy, as of late. But put those quadrotor dances in context with this next one and they don’t hold a candle in terms of fear factor.
The creator of the FPS Russia YouTube channel has a new video that, within a day, has gone viral with more than 1 million hits showcasing a quadrotor drone equipped with a sub-machine gun. Without a formal name prescribed for it, he goes with “Charlene.”

This is Charlene, a quadrotor equipped with a machine gun.
The host of the show is clear to state this weaponized quadrotor is just a prototype that he considers a “weapon of the future.” Even as a prototype, he shows us that Charlene is still fully functional. See for yourself (content warning: strong language):
As you can see, the quadrotor is connected to a control held by the user to allow them to fly the machine and also have a view of what exactly the drone is seeing. The operator is able to use Charlene to take out dummy targets on a hill and even shows how it’s mobile enough to make it through a make shift window. Ensuring Charlene doesn’t get into the wrong hands, the operator zooms her into a car, which he then blows up — Charlene included.

Gizmodo speculates that it’s only a matter of time before weapons such as this are a reality. What do you think? Is the U.S. military working on similar designs?

Plus did you see a camera on the drone junk, no?
Hey Liz, I have some water front property in AZ to sell. I think you would be interested in it.
After the cold war the equipment found that was being use for the Russian missile system was so junky. It would have taken a miracle for half of it to work.
I usually never criticize the Blaze but this time on this post, it calls for it. I hope The Blaze doesn’t really think this is something to worry about, this is a Youtube video that was placed with other funny videos.

Posted on April 25, 2012 at 11:45amDitto – digital fakery at its best. Plus the “machine gun” hanging down from the device is so clearly fake, there isn’t a belt feeding it the ammo.
Plus the explosions are the result of the target compound he uses – when hit with a bullet it explodes. Nothing special.

Posted on April 25, 2012 at 12:01pmIf the ‘copter is even capable of carrying the payload , this is disconcerting. This is a claimed prototype. rather than discredit this video, consider the possibilities. How about crowd control? Rather than a machine gun, how about a six shooter? Rather than ONE – dozens or hundreds. In the realm of military/arms spending, these things would be cheap. How about an explosive payload?
Even if it flew thirty seconds, it could be a devastating weapon.

Posted on April 25, 2012 at 12:34pmI’m extremely skeptical of this video. The ‘gun’ on the drone is a barrel attached pretty weakly, with no apparent mechanisms (chamber, firing pin, ejection port, etc) or even a magazine. My guess is that they had someone off camera doing the shooting, and then patched it up with CGI. I seriously hope that no one thinks that the targets exploded because of bullets, which I consider a trifle, because it was so obvious.
Report Post »But the concept, I think is real and I think is logical. It would be just a smaller version of an armed predator drone. It isn‘t all that different of a drone we’ve seen before (http://www.theblaze.com/stories/want-to-see-the-armys-new-mini-suicide-drone-in-action/). I think it would be hard to take down, if it was military armored drone. Shotgun pellets wouldn’t likely have enough penetration or strength to destroy it (expect maybe the blades, but again, depends on the armor), and being as small as it is, it would be a harder target than a human. Also consider the idea of it being airborne so proximity effect would not help (ricochet, explosive rounds, etc). The softest part of the target would be to hit the pilot running it…
budzy1911
Posted on April 25, 2012 at 1:54pmAgreed – this is a fake. 100 rounds of ammo in 223 would weigh about 3 pounds with magazine and you notice there was no recoil on the drone?
That isn‘t to say the military can’t produce one that could carry a SAW or other gun. This though is a fake.

Posted on April 25, 2012 at 3:53pmUm, got some bad news for ya FFTRYANNY, it is not as far fetched as you may think. The camera you can’t seem to see for some reason is right in the nose of the copter and you can see it plain as day. It’s actually quite large compared to the majority of cameras used in model airplanes these days. Also, the copter itself reacts exactly as is should if it were firing a gun in the way shown. The muzzle blast is exactly where it should be when looking through the camera due to it’s placement. He fires in short bursts to prevent loss of control of the copter, as would occur during a sustained burst. My guess is it’s a 9mm machine gun, with a 100rd magazine fed system. As far as lifting the payload, the design of that copter could easily lift the necessary weight with that amount of thrust to weight ratio. Oh, and as far as the “Fake People” goes, Duh!!

Yes !! The concept is real, and no doubt exists.
But we already have large drones, and real gunships, and smart weapon systems to handle the big stuff.
The reason for these little guys is their small size, and being to go places that the big boys can’t.
They exist to get up close and personal. And that fact does make them susceptible to certain types of fire.
Now, if there were a whole swarm of them coming at you?…….better be able to make yourself real small, real fast.

I’d like to point out, while indeed fake, lack of recoil on the drone means nothing. We have cars with sesors that can in milliseconds detects bumps and compensate, creating smooth automobile rides.
Some properly coded stabilizing gyro’s should do the trick, epecially when it has little to compensate for.
But I’d also like to say, while even mount a mechaine gun? Why not just a nail bomb with a kamikaze drone? Strike a human target, surrounded, and go off on impact, spraying nearby persons?
