Well-Known Businesses Are Starting to Look Shaky

Some companies become so badly damaged because of changes in the competitive markets or because of poor management decisions that their employees lose hope. A company’s staff may become demoralized because they believe their company has no future and that they might be laid off in efforts to remain financially stable.

This loss of hope is exacerbated by the state of the economy. A person who is fired in today’s market may discover (quite painfully) that it is extremely difficult to find new work. Nearly 6 million Americans have been unemployed for more than half a year, which signals that work is scarce.

24/7 Wall St. has compiled a list of companies that are in deep trouble. The list is based on share prices, layoffs, analysts’ reports about their futures of these firms, and the extent to which they have missed Wall Street predictions about earnings-per-share.

Well Known Businesses Look Shaky1. Best Buy recently released earnings and they were much worse than Wall St. expected. Best Buy dropped its forecast for the balance of the year. It took the action because of concerns about TV and phone sales, along with worry about the economy. Best Buy has had a string of earnings failures, due primarily to its failure to do well online. Best Buy recently said its website would carry items from third-party stores to expand its attraction to shoppers. This did nothing to improve the perception that investors have of the company. Fitch downgraded Best Buy in June.

Well Known Businesses Look Shaky2. Research In Motion posted earnings recently that show its sharp decline has accelerated. Several analysts now believe the RIM BlackBerry smartphone will be no more than a “niche” product in a market it controlled almost completely four years ago. The bad earnings news took shares down from $29.54 to $23.93 in one day. RIM’s stock is off almost 50 percent in the past year, while shares in rival Apple are higher by more than 40 percent. RIM shipped only 200,000 units of its PlayBook tablet PC last quarter. Expectations had been for a number more than three times that. RIM revenue fell by 10 percent in the most recent period to $4.2 billion — a horrible situation for a company that was one of the most well-known growth stories for five years. The consensus among the media and Wall St. is that RIM has almost no chance to recover. It said in July it would lay off 10.5 percent of its workforce.

Well Known Businesses Look Shaky3. Talbots shares traded above $17 in May a year ago. They now trade at $3 after dipping to $2.25 recently. After the company released earnings two weeks ago, research firm Sterne Agee downgraded the stock to “neutral” from “buy.” The failing retailer said it expects to close about 110 stores in total, including 15 to 20 consolidations, through fiscal 2013. The corporation’s chief creative officer, Michael Smaldone, was fired as earnings were announced. Oddly, Talbots did not have a replacement when it took this action.

Well Known Businesses Look Shaky4. Hewlett-Packard announced earnings on August 18 and its shares promptly dropped to a 5-year low. HP also revised earnings forecasts down. Management said it might spin off the firm’s PC division, the largest in the world. So far, there are no takers. HP also discontinued it Palm operating system, which it bought only a year ago, and its tablet PC product. Investors believe, almost universally, that CEO Léo Apotheker does not have the strengths of his predecessor Mark V. Hurd, who was pushed out for ethical lapses. Wall St. seems certain that HP will lay off more people in addition to the sharp cuts it made in 2009 and 2010.

Well Known Businesses Look Shaky5. The U.S. Postal Service may be more troubled than any large public organization in America. It said it might lose as much as $10 billion this year. It teeters on the brink of insolvency. Its workers’ compensation liability is more than $12 billion. The USPS management has suggested it shutter thousands of individual post offices, layoff as many as 200,000 workers, and close over 250 service centers. Another suggestion by management is that delivery be cut to five days a week. No one should expect that the suggestions of executives at USPS will go unchallenged. The American Postal Workers Union most likely will strike to fight the job cuts.

Well Known Businesses Look Shaky6. Nintendos once nearly insurmountable lead in the video console sector has been lost, and its sales have fallen further and further behind rivals Microsoft and Sony. The rise of the Google Android operating system has also encouraged video game publishers to make more products that run on that platform. The 2010 market share of Nintendo DS fell from 70 percent in 2009 to 57 percent. Nintendo’s growth has also been damaged by the rise of the iPad and iPhone. The future is even grimmer. “iSuppli predicts Nintendo will sell 70 million 3DS gaming systems by 2015, a figure that is 21 million less than the 91 million in sales racked up by the original DS at the same point in its sales cycle,” according to the Unofficial Apple Weblog. Nintendo announced an unexpected quarterly loss on July 28 and its shares plunged 20 percent.

Well Known Businesses Look Shaky7. Cisco was one of the world’s greatest tech companies not long ago. Long-time CEO John Chambers made a series of decisions to expand Cisco beyond its core router business then. Very few of them paid off. Part of his plan was to diversify into the consumer electronics business, which weakened Cisco’s overall earnings strength. The company now makes TV set-top boxes, Linksys wi-fi hardware and home video-conferencing products. Chambers has been forced to reverse course, sell or cut back these operations and lay off 6,500 workers to make up for the losses caused by the diversification. Chambers’s job status is still in question. He lowered Cisco’s revenue forecasts recently to a growth rate of 3 percent to 5 percent for the next three years. Cisco’s newer businesses are not its only challenge though. The company has barely kept pace in the router business with China-based Huawei Technologies and Juniper.

Well Known Businesses Look Shaky8. Eastman Kodak’s run as a public company may be over soon. That would put the jobs of many of its 18,000 employees in jeopardy. Analysts think Kodak’s patents may be worth much more than that the company. Kodak has begun the process to find a buyer for these patents. MDB Capital Group told Bloomberg that the digital-imaging patents owned by Kodak might be valued at $3 billion in a sale. A sale of patents could mean Kodak will not keep all of its divisions. Its Film, Photofinishing and Entertainment Group sales dropped 14 percent to $369 million for the quarter. This is the area of the company’s business where it would be logical to start the next in a long line of lay-offs. Kodak’s cash position has become desperate. It has $957 million on hand compared to $1.624 billion at the end of the second quarter a year ago.

“A person who is fired in today’s market may discover (quite painfully) that it is extremely difficult to find new work. ”

This recession will not end as long as this attitude continues! The jobs that are being lost are GONE! As in forever. You cannot find those jobs no matter where you look.

What to da. What to Do! (wringing hands)

Create a job. Get up, stop waiting for Obama to give you a job; stop looking in the want ads for that job that looks like the one you was laid off from. Get out there and create a job. There are many resources to help you create a new job within an existing company or to create one “out of whole cloth”

In 1995 Jeff Bezos decided to sell books that he didn’t even own. in 16 years his company – Amazon. com has become…. oh well, you know where I am going.

    Just do it!

You would have to be an idiot to open a business today, with your own money. Just make a deal with the local DEMOCRAT, for a loan, of TAXPAYERS money, and let them know you will be donating at least half to BARRY’S “Screw America Four More Years”, reelection campaign. You can always apply for more TAXPAYERS money six months down the road, for more payola for Barry.Even if you are honest and successful, Barry will then demonize you and attempt to steal ALL your profits.

My former employer ‘restructured’ in March. By June I had opened my own consultancy. It has been extremely difficult with many, many 30+ hour days, often times consecutively with only a few hours of sleep between each.

State regulations causing any number of flaming bureaucratic hoops to jump through have created more gray hair than all my time spent working in Iraq and Afghanistan combined. One thing is for certain though, all the late nights and long hours, all the worry and stress, all the frustration, shoe string budgets and making due and I wouldn’t give it all back to work for someone else at twice my old wage for half the stress.

Knowing it all relies on ME whether or not my family succeeds and not on external factors or markets or some decision made 8 levels above my head is truly one of the best and most empowering feelings I have ever experienced.

She is going back to work and realizes the truth in what I said……I will be babysitting so they have no worries about the safety and well being of the little one.

I still work full time, but I have things going on outside of work. I work all day and come home and work some more. I enjoy the work I do outside of my job 1000 times more. The key is not just making your own work, although that’s at least 50%. Living for the least amount of money is the rest. Our goal is to make our operating expenses about 12 thousand a year and everything we earn above that goes to savings and investments (not stock market, but businesses), and charity.

Businesses large & small are falling thanks to 3 solid years of over regulation, rampant government spending, illegal immigration, and general stupidity by the masses.
I said over 3 years ago “Illegals are bringing this country down to it’s kness, eliminating jobs, milking the system resources, and it will eventually effect YOUR job & YOUR life” but you all kept working these illegals or turning a blind eye to it. Even today I see plenty of illegals mowing grass/painting homes/roofing/framing while my neighbor sits home.

The businesses are failing because of the unemployment and because of the idiots in the GOP that beleive in firing additional workers from the government payroll will help. We need Obamas job plan and massive govenrment spending. The large corporations are not spending their cash reserves. We need Americans working and if the private sector isn’t going to help, tax them and lets build and repair bridges and roads.

If you’re so confident this WILL work, there MUST be an example of this method of working. I’ll tell you what sparky, give me an example in the entire HISTORY of mankind where a nation/country “spent” there way out a recession and remained fiscal for very long. Just one. You also think that companies aren’t spending their cash reserves. Didn’t you read about Kodak in the article? Cash position is DOWN 667 million since last year. How many other companies are in the same boat?

Jobs plan? More govt spending? Both of those require TAXPAYER dollars. You cannot “tax the rich” because that simply raises prices. Been to a grocery store lately? Regulation and taxes that are not income tax nor sales tax are forcing prices to escalate. If you cannot or do not see this YOU do not do the purchasing / spending in the house.

The issue is not the debt. The issue is unemployment. corporations are not hiring. GOP is laying off workers, increase the unemployment roles and decreasing the numbe rof spenders in the market, no job, little money can’t pay mortgage, not spending extra, etc. It took the massive WWII spending to end the Great Depresion. Employment and the middle class grew under Ike, when he started a large public works program, the interstate highways, also the highest tax bracket was nearly triple what is today. Higher taxes under Reagan did not stop the recovery in the 1980s, nor did the higher tax rate in the 1990′s stop the growth of the economy.

The Blazers here have fallen for a lie. Tax rates under W. were sunk to levels so low as to be unsustainable. raise the limits to the 1990′s and you would see a reduction in the debt. Additionally, the problem is the unemploymnet rate. Corporations didn’t hire under W. with the lower tax rate, teh government needs to step in with public workers programs and get money back into circulation. Increase the number of going paying construction jobs, begin to order from cement and steel suppliers.

The Tea PArty’s “plan” is to do nothing except read your bibles and call the unemployed lazy.

You obviously have never been responsible for making a payroll… I have. By the way, if you consider the “debt” we’ve incurred in this country as “NOT” a problem… you are dilusional at best. Finally, if all you have is “bible reading” as a criticism for the “Tea Party” we’re obviously doing well. Do you think the government should spend even more money. They just spent about 2 trillion dollars to create ZERO, 0, zilch, nada jobs. Now Obama wants to spend 1.5 trillion more. The definition of insanity is “doing the same thing over and over and expecting different outcomes each time”. Every family in the country owes 85,000 dollars just to pay the interest on what was borrowed. The Obama plan will increase that to 125,000 dollars. Schiff nailed this. All blazers here should see this. One of the best quick explanations without a bunch of rambling on how/why the government is destroying the economy rather than helping it. Speaking of education – is the educational system not part of the problem? Do the boobs like Paul Krugman who is a so called economist not pander to putting more impedements in the way of businesses? I think it‘s just so basic once you read Schiff’s work and listen to his logic. Government can always print money and add to the debt load w/ B.S. jobs that are completely 100% unsustainable. The private sector can create jobs that are 100% sustainable that do not contribute to the debt. If employers do not want to hire an employee, then they believe the employee adds less value than what the employee could contribute to the business. It’s that simple.

America will survive, perhaps not exactly as we know it but it will survive and still be the best country on earth. Freedom and liberty are ideas that cannot simply be swept away by destroying the economy. We are resourceful people and we can adapt. Our best move right now besides making sure we and our families are taken care of is to get rid of the grossly over bloated federal government. We still need and always will need a federal government but not even close to what it is today. When we work with our neighbors, do business with our neighbors and help each other we will still prosper. Don’t forget to include god and biblical principles as of top most importance too.

This time it is crucial to elect a non CFR person. (if that is even possible).

and one final thing…has Fox news ever done an expose’ on these organizations such as the CFR? ? ?

maybe because Rupart M. is a member……. does not want to rat out his own….

So this is unexpected? Quite the contrary, our gov’t is spending like drunken sailors, and into oblivion we go!!! Strap on the seatbelt, things are now going to accelerate MUCH faster now, just like water down the drain. If all of this was bad enough, I urge you folks to do a bit of research:

ELENIN & Nibiru – go to google or youtube and do a search – it will blow your mind. I am not saying it will be the end of the world, but I do not know, I am no rocket scientist. NASA and our gov’t are not telling us anything about this comet and/or brown dwarf star entering our system. Scarey as heck, I know, but the truth is out there somewhere. Let me know what you all think. God bless you all and stay safe!

Guide your children to be well-rounded talented and highly educated individuals and they will have no problem. Oh, and protect them from the distractions that others will foist on them — especially the drugs.

You are correct. When, this crash comes you have to be ready; If you have ever had to evacuate for a hurricane, or other disaster then you know how fast things can go South. I imagine that soon inflation will skyrocket, due to a downgrade in the US dollar as world standard. When it happens, you better be ready to supply your family with at least a month of food, fuel, and water. When it settles, you will be unemployed, your savings will be worth nothing, and your ceditors will still want those payments made. So be ready…..get out of debt, stock water and MRE’s (it takes 2 1/2 gals. of water to flush a toilet. get a generator, with fuel store, because fuel trucks will not be running for weeks if not months. Arm yourself, tend your own, be ready to help your friends….you will need them.

These companies failed to adapt. Their shortcomings are mutually exclusive to the overall economy. This is the way a free market is supposed to work. As a poster said earlier, Best Buy is still asking $30 for a standard USB cable that I can buy at Walgreens for $12. Improve your product so the market place wants it and offer a market driven price – or watch three of your competitors succeed while you fail. That’s the beauty of the free market – the consumer gets to pick and choose which product and which price best suits their needs and wants.

I don’t think we can afford another 14 months of Obama and his czars! If the Solyndra debacle is just the tip of the iceberg, God help us! I heard last nite on Fox that the staggering sum guaranteed by taxpayers to Solyndra was more than the feds paid to 36 states for support of their infrastructure. No wonder the states are in such a cash bind! The corruption and waste in government was already on cruise control before Obama came in; now it is a death spiral that will take us all down, which of course was Obama‘s handler’s plan all along! Can’t we impeach the bastard? I am deadly serious. 14 more months of this? We are already almost out of time.

Might I offer a little hope? I think you could use it. Tough times in America have come and gone to be sure like the great depression and WWII rationing. We got through it. We will make it this time as well. No doubt their is a reshaping of America in process and it seems we are powerless to stop it. But I think we must not forget the indelible spirit of Americans of past.
The President is no leader to be sure and this in part is one of the reasons for our predicament. We must lead ourselves. If confidence in Government were not so low we would not be in nearly the straights we find ourselves. So we must have confidence in each other. When Washington does not provide, we provide. It is sad that we look to Washington for our individualism. And trying to do battle with an invisible enemy (elites) that you can’t be sure is there is madness. Is their some grand global conspiracy to control or destroy this country? Maybe, but it seems to me we should focus on things that are in our control as individuals. Its a fools errand to go chasing black helicopters and people in the shadows. The real power is with the individual. What you can do to change your life no shadowy figure can take away.
      Don’t be Eore or Pollyanna.

USA great because it briefly cast out the BigEvil and ran individualim to the heights. New world orrder is the old world order regrouping to eliminate freedom loving people. IMF is the key, last holdouts now falling. Every aspect of life has been monitized thanks to feminism, every second is taxed and everything requires money, lots of it. First of all, commerce as we have known it is done. Big box stores and their overpriced products have caused savvy shoppers to stay away.. Best buy example.. 6′ USB cable $30.00. 30.00??? I can buy 5 cables just like it on Ebay or other online stores delivered to my door for that price. I do most of my electronics shopping on line and YES we are steering away from big box to internet and mom & pop. Newegg.com is where I do my computer and electronics shopping. Not a one stop shop and not always the best price but 95% of the time they have the best product at the best price.
HP is getting out of the pc business. WHY?? Because of Windows XP computers are being used longer!! I recycle old DELL computers and other brands. I can get wholesale lots of good PC‘s that will serve many people that couldn’t afford a PC otherwise on the cheap. The post office does a great job with parcels now but delivering the mail? Kodak saw it’s demise with the digital camera and people associated them with film not cameras..Cisco made the best products used in data centers. If you are cisco certified you make good money! In essence, competition and the market conditions will mean the demise of these companies of they do not change the way they do business.

Yup. It’s a combination of how capitalism is supposed to work (adapt to your market or die), the unwillingness of large companies to change (”What worked twenty years ago must still work today! What do you mean, in-tah-net?”) and capitalism obviously forgetting that, in order to sell their goods, they need lots of regular people with money in their pockets which they themselves have been taking away by reducing wages.

Indeed the true free market capitalism demands you innovate, adapt and change to the demands of the customers and the market, and find the new trends before others do; or get out of the way and pass into the night like the dinosaurs did.

Mind you too, having a government administration bent to the destruction of our economy and our businesses does not help at all either — they want absolute control over everything, via shutting them down for small business or via the unions in the largest ones, until they are fully owned and run by the Fed’s.

HP is getting out of the PC business because technology is getting out of the PC business. The old computers you are talking about, will be as useful as a typewriter is now in just a few years. Have you noticed that processor developement has reached a pennical, and now the race is to become smaller, for pads, phones, and televisions. Get used to the “Cloud” it will take the place of your hard drive. You won’t have a choice in the matter, it is how it will be.

Well 2 of these I have never heard of. . . and I think I am fairly well read. I will tell you that we had our local Wendy’s go out of business. (In Brenham Texas, a college town) and I have seen about 4 gas stations go under in Giddings Texas (major hwy 290 runs right through it) Though I feel for any business right now I implore every one that IF you need to do business please TRY to do it with a small business. The mom and pop stores, the little print shops, the boutiques and such. Remember that the chain restaurants in your small town are owned by people in your town not a corporation. Suport the little people. And FRANKLY The post office should not be on this list. . .it is not a buisness and HP and Nintendo are the only ones I have used in the last 10 years. My oldest is now 20 and can get his own entertainment and HP makes CRAP products.

Because you associate big money with big government, shutting the government down so ALL government workers will get a taste of what it’s like to be out of a job is nonesense. The breadwinner in my family is a civil engineer and is employed by the Dept. of the Navy. He works his butt off daily seeing to it that civilian contractors are not ripping off the “government” by excessive charges and overrides that inevitably comes out of your pocket AND our pocket. He takes a change of clothes with him everyday because he knows he will have to do site work and many times I’ve had to wash the mud and grime out of his clothes. Cushy job? Not hardly. Many of the government employees you suggest putting out of work are honest, hardworking people trying to support a family. Their jobs are in jeopardy every September when it’s time to pass a BUDGET, which Congress has failed to do for the past 2.5 years. If you’re so hell bent on putting federal employees out of work, why not start November 6, 2012? I could name a thousand without hesitation that need to be “UNEMPLOYED”!!

Would be nice to see the US Postal Service take lead here. Based on the vision of a nation’s founder, what a coup is these men and women could pull together and save the institution?

Greed, distrust, class hatred will hamper every move in this department.

USPS management is so isolated and has been so dependent on their rewards on how successful the Unions are in their negotiations. Postal Managers not directly involved in negotitation, stand outside the door, rubbing their hands with delight at each concession upper management makes. For every gain the unions make, the management staff get the equivalent or better. Obviously, this is not an efficient system.

The unions are no longer made up of postal workers but have been thoroughly infiltrated by professional organizers, ala obama. The unions have no interest in the need of the public, though this is not true of the members.

Corruption, in the technology they purchase, is undisclosed but obvious. Huge costly machines are developed, designed installed and obsoleted in 2 or 3 years as some new bureaucrat, “connected guy,” comes on board.

The fate of the USPS is dependent on the character of the people who inhabit the positions. They will fail or succeed on their own. Either the workers themselves will figure out how to add value to their customers lives or they will circle the wagons an tell America to “Take a number.”

I wish you well, APWU, NALC, NAPS and USPS.
