Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) isn’t one for splitting hairs. The often-controversial freshman congressman has no problem sharing his open and honest assessment of the racial, social and political schema.
Wednesday evening was no exception, when he took to the House floor to deride Democrats for “handouts” that he dubbed a modern form of slavery. Additionally, West praised Republicans for standing up to big government and protecting individual liberty.
“Our party firmly believes in the safety net,” West said in a floor speech on Wed. evening. “We reject the idea of the safety net becoming a hammock.”
He went on, praising the GOP for best benefiting America’s poor.
“What Republicans have long understood is that poor communities are best served when they’re empowered to care for themselves,” he continued. “The more they come to rely on government checks, the less they learn to rely on their own ability and ingenuity.
But it was his comments about small government and “slavery” that caught peoples’ attention.
“For this reason, the Republican value of minimizing government dependence is particularly beneficial to the poorest among us,” he said. “Conversely, the Democratic appetite for ever-increasing redistributionary handouts is in fact the most insidious form of slavery remaining in the world today, and it does not promote economic freedom.”
In addition to discussing poverty and personal freedom, he recapped the GOP’s role as “the party of freedom,” as he noted President Abraham Lincoln’s signing of the Emancipation Proclamation and the subsequent amendments that ended slavery, helped protect African Americans and granted them the right to vote, as the Hill reports.
West concluded by calling the GOP the “party of equality” and “opportunity,“ while wishing everyone a ”Happy Black History month.”
This isn’t the first time West has used similar language. Back in August, he told Laura Ingraham, who was filling in for “O’Reilly Factor” host Bill O’Reilly, that he is the “modern-day Harriet Tubman“ and that he wants to lead fellow African Americans away from the the ”21st century plantation.”
At CPAC this year, West discussed conservatism and the black community and he again mentioned the modern-day “plantation.” Here’s some video of his comments at the convention:

Posted on February 16, 2012 at 1:03pmSmith, this topic is about the EFFECT on the poor of recieving help. That‘s what I’m talking about too. You’re talking about something else.
He is saying that if the help comes from the government, they are enslaved. Somehow though, if the help comes from somewhere else, they are not enslaved.
So what if some poor people are getting help from a church financed shelter or food kitchen, that is also subsidized by the government. Are they enslaved or not enslaved? Why does the source of the money matter where the money comes from in determining whether or not they are enslaved?
What if you don’t know the source of the money? How then do you determine if it is good that poor receive the help or bad?

Report Post »The intent of most government programs are truly noble, BUT in the falacy of man, our implementation has “unintended, negative, consequence”. We institute programs to help people, but because there is not responsibility tied to the help, it causes them to become takers, not givers. It starts with the seed. The money was taken from one to help another, who in time becomes a taker. Add on to that the sometimes “motive” of the help, i.e. Pres. Johnson stating that he was buying the black vote for generations with welfare. Not a good motive, not a good outcome.
In Gods kingdom, a giver gives money to help and the one helped usually understands that it is a gift of love. The reciever may not do anything with it, or they may, but in any event, the GIVER is rewarded by God for giving. Not only in heaven to come, but here on earth. God repays the giver.
There is no reward from government for paying taxes. And actually if you become more successful you are required to pay more, i.e. a man’s determination of what is “fair”.
In God’s kingdom, 10% is 10%. the ways of God are very clear in the Bible and are a stark difference to the lower ways of man. Guess the Creator might actually be better qualified to know.

Just where in the heck did he get that insanity from? Certainly not from the founders…that’s for sure.
Just were in the Constitution does he find a provision for WELFARE?
Congress has not unlimited powers to provide for the general welfare, but only those specifically enumerated.
Thomas Jefferson
“If Congress can do whatever in their discretion can be done by money, and will promote the general welfare, the government is no longer a limited one possessing enumerated powers, but an indefinite one subject to particular exceptions.” -James Madison
With respect to the two words “general welfare,” I have always regarded them as qualified by the detail of powers connected with them. To take them in a literal and unlimited sense would be a metamorphosis of the Constitution into a character which there is a host of proofs was not contemplated by its creators. — James Madison, letter to James Robertson
West needs to ask himself some serious questions, as well as taking a second look at his support for the NDAA.

My neighbor was on section 8 housing had two kids she couldn’t afford so the government gave her a house, plus help utilities, and food stamps. She promptly moved her full time employed boyfriend whose a hvac mechanic in with her. Which means they had the ability to pay rent they did they continued robbing the tax payers. She got pregnant by him (i guess) so what does section 8 do move her into a larger house. When some one within specific income levels goes to the government for help, it has become an entitlement. They expect that they will receive that money every month and some therefore do nothing to earn enough money to put themselves in a position of no longer being entitled to that money. The church on the other hand is not going to support somebody indefinitely or someone who is being irresponsible. That is the difference between money from a church and money from the government.

Let’s put it in perspective. LBJ said “we’ve got to give them a little something, just enough to quiet them down, not enough to make a difference.”
Would slavery be an accurate description of holding someone back by giving them just enough to be comfortable in their misery? Liberals don’t think so.
LBJ also said, “I’ll have those ____ (derogatory term for Blacks) voting Democratic for the next 200 years.”
Is there also an evil intent of having them vote in favor of those who would continue to keep a boot on their neck for the next couple hundred years or so? Liberals don’t think so.
I imagine that racists would approve of certain races being dependant on government, generation after generation…sounds logical.
My family is close friends with a family currently on their fourth generation of government dependence. It hasn’t been a “hand up” in their case.

Posted on February 16, 2012 at 9:16pmHey Speck. Most of your post is quotes from LBJ, which I won’t question. I won’t defend LBJ because he was a complex character with as much bad as good the little I know about him (there are at least two definitive biographies I believe). And I certainly won’t defend quotes taken “out of context.” No, don’t laugh at that. Johnson, like many powerful powerful politicians, was master manipulator and arm twister. Who were those quotes made to and why? Was he trying to convince a reluctant, bigoted Southern Democrat vote in favor of his Great Society legislation by appealing to his bigotry? Or did he really mean it? I don’t know. I haven’t read the biographies, but does anyone really know? I don’t think so. I think LBJ will be judged by the disaster in Vietnam on the one hand, and the huge positive effect on America of Civil Rights legislation on the other.
Of course, Allan West is out there quoting Lincoln these days. Lincoln said this, “My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it…” He also said, “My first impulse would be to free all the slaves, and send them to Liberia…” Did he mean that, or was he appealing to certain audience with those comments?
I‘m afraid I’m out of words, or I’d address your other comment that the government hurts people by helping them not starve and be homeless during hard times.

Please make another post and address the topic at hand. Multiple posts don’t upset me.
I have close friends going on four generations of govt assistance. It has not been a hand up in their case.
“I am for doing good to the poor, but I differ in opinion of the means. I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it.” Benjamin Franklin
Does the current welfare program lead the poor out of poverty or make them comfortable enough to live multiple generations on govt. assistance? Would like you thoughts if you believe it leads out of poverty.
You said “positive effect on America of Civil Rights legislation”
Assuming you’re talking about welfare, topic at hand, how do you measure positive?
Is it measured in terms of average length of assistance before the hand up results in self sufficiency? Is the poor class ever shrinking out of existence due to decades of hand ups or is that class ever growing? What dictates positive?
You said “not starve and be homeless during hard times.”
What about hard times that last for four generations? How long would you limit assistance to?
You said “Or did he really mean it? I don’t know” I am fine with this statement as long as you never condemn republicans, seeing that you can’t ready their minds.
I have asked a lot of questions. I would like each answered if at all possible.

Posted on February 17, 2012 at 12:00amSpeck, okay, you have close friends who are on their fourth generation of government assistance. I believe you. That does happen. I have to ask, have you, or anyone in your immediate or extended family every received government assistance and then climbed out of it? Have you ever met anyone like that? Do you know anyone who got unemployment insurance, food stamps or whatever other government assistance after losing their job and then survived, kept their family alive and in a home, then went on to get a job, stoped getting government help and then supported themselves and their family? Do know you know anybody like that? Do you agree that happens?
I think I’m safe in saying that conservatives use examples like the one you gave as a reason to cut off government support the jobless. It will enslave them, like your friends, conservatives say. Liberals tend to think that most people are honest and want to work and support themselves and their families, while not denying the existance of the people you mention.
So do we, as a country, base policies based on the existance of the people in your example, or the people who need a little help to get by, then climb out of their jobless state?
Spec, the economy is the worst it’s been since the Depression. People can’t just go out and get a job. Churches are giving all they can and I doubt they are feeding even 1% of the poor and homeless. Without government help, Americans would starve.

Obviously you don’t know anything about our Military. As an Army retiree I have to pay Health insurance premiums through Tri-Care (which just went up another $300.00 this month thanks to Obama) ) and co-pays for Dr. visits and co-pays for prescriptions. Where do you liberals get the idea that those that did a job which you were either to lazy, or afraid to do serving this country for over 20 years get FREE health care? Welfare recipients like yourself get free stuff like Medicaid, foodstamps and the like not the military!

Posted on February 16, 2012 at 3:48pmThat is absolutely right!
People forget that.
Report Post »I think it is an excellent idea to take away the health insurance
and pension benefits from congress & senate & let them be responsible
for their own insurance etc. Out of their own pockets. Just exactly what they
propose for the rest of us!

Posted on February 16, 2012 at 4:28pmYou’re making the point of those who disagree with you! So Col West grew up living off the benefit package that HIS FATHER EARNED. It wasn’t the taxpayers who paid for their benefits. His father paid for them with his service just as millions of veterans do.
Like his father before him, Col West earned his benefits and I personally believe the taxpayer gets a lot more from veterans than veterans get back.
. And as for the bullchips that retirees get FREE medical, go to any military hospital and see who gets called to the doctor first and who sits in the back of the room until all the ACTIVE DUTY are done. I, like many other veterans, pay TRICARE premiums out of our own pocket to be able to see a doctor of our own choosing whenever we need care and that means we don’t have to spend a whole day just to get an aspirin prescription from a military doctor. We pay the same Medicare premiums that every one else pays, so where’s the freebies?
The only thing I don’t like about Col West is that he is too nice about it.

Posted on February 16, 2012 at 11:32amOf course he is right. Welfare is democratic supported, government slavery.
It‘s strange that people don’t see it. Have that many people forgotten the history of the Democratic party? When the US wouldn’t let them own people outright, they turned to enslaving them by making them depend on the hard earned money of others. It’s even worse than slavery because they do nothing to earn it. Thus killing their spirit, something actual slavery couldn’t do.

Posted on February 16, 2012 at 11:29amI wish all of the republicans were black or of color…they can speak their mind without dancing around like the white sock puppets.
If you are white and speak out, you are a racist…so the liberal media will tell ya…and you get wrongfully trashed…this is a sick society when people don’t know what a racist is…The education system simply sucks…and the sheep go BAHh!
Rage on West, rage on!!! Tell them the truth…and FYI it is not rage…just plain and simple truth that the man speaks…

Posted on February 16, 2012 at 11:46amLUMBAR SPINE, Never have been a gambler myself. Don’t really know why, but I have just never cared for it. But, attempting to reach the so called 1% and only making it part of the way is still a success in my eyes. It means that person is self supporting and not a roid in the anus of the treasury. At least those out there trying to make a living and improving their situations are better than those whining, snivelling, and groveling fools with their hands out. I must say that there are those who actually cannot take care of themselves as opposed to those who will not take care of themselves.

Posted on February 17, 2012 at 11:35amGetting to the top 1% is easy -all you need is desire and belief! The hard part is getting people to believe because when 25% of the country’s citizens are trained to believe they cannot achieve any personal success – they dont. Welfare destroys belief – temporary help to re-educate and or train people in a field that they desire – creates belief in themselves and ultimately personal success and a sense of self worth which when attained – can help people move mountains!
