Rep. West Fends off Critics, Demands Beckel Apologize

As mentioned earlier on The Blaze, Rep. Allen West (R-FL) has come under fire for some strongly worded remarks he made over the weekend. Bob Beckel of Fox News’ The Five, for example, has condemned Rep. West’s comments as “disgraceful,” “despicable,” and “disgusting.”

Naturally, since Rep. West’s comments have made headlines, major media outlets have been fighting to get some face time with the controversial Congressman.

First up was Soledad O’Brien of CNN’s Starting Point. O’Brien played a clip of Rep. West’s “get the hell out” remarks, then said: “I don’t get it. I mean, I don’t understand what you’re saying. Which is… you’re telling Obama and Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi to get out of the United States. Explain it to me.”

“No, Soledad. Soledad. Absolutely not. And you know that,” Rep. West replied.

“No, I truly — no joke. I am not being facetious. I do not get what you’re saying.”

“Well the thing is,” West explained, “you should have listened to the entire speech. You didn’t listen to the entire speech which talked about the contrast between the quality of opportunity which allowed a young man born in 1961 in the inner city of Atlanta Georgia to now represent the highest-income zip code in the entire United States of America. That’s the America that I love, that’s the America that’s dear to me.”

West concluded his remarks by inviting O’Brien to come to south Florida and read the Federalist papers and Constitution with him.

“As fun as that sounds, the two of us sitting down and reading the Federalist papers together,” O’brien giggled. “No, I’ll stick to the TV interviews with you if you don’t mind.”

Later in the morning, when Fox and Friends asked the Congressman about Bob Beckle’s freak-out, Rep. West explained, “If you go back and read the transcript of the message that I gave, it was about equality of achievement, about economic dependency, it was about enslaving the American entrepreneur well in spirit. That message needs to leave this country.”

He went on to say that if anyone watched that entire speech they would understand that he’s talking about “a contrast of visions in this country.”

“I think Bob Beckel owes me an apology for saying that he would not refer to me as a Congressional representative nor as a Lieutenant Colonel Retired,” West said.

Of course, once Beckel caught wind of Rep. West’s suggestion, he scoffed at the very thought of dialing back his rhetoric.

“Mr. West,” Beckel said, “Let me just tell you, if you’ve got enough time you can wait, but I am not going to apologize to you.”

Going around the table, Beckel asked his co-hosts if they thought he should apologize. For some reason, some of Beckel’s associates became squeamish and responded to his question with non-committal answers.

“In the end, Beckel declared the situation over, saying that West has one position and he has his own. There wasn’t, however, any apology,” writes Mediaite’s Jon Bershad.

    Allen West voices what I can’t. I truly wish that he would put his actions where his words are and run for President; he seems to be a man we could trust to stand strong for our Constitution, Bill of Rights, and our country and its citizens.

      Is that really the America you want? A country where only 1 opinion is tolerated and everybody who has a different one needs to leave the country. Don’t you see that that sort of view is exactly what America is NOT about. I thought you conservatives loved freedom? Do you only love the freedom to have 1 opinion. This country is about freedom. Freedom to believe whatever you want to believe, that is what this country was founded on. There are some places where you are only allowed to have one view and are required to agree and are told what to believe as well. Do you really want to live in one of those countries? I’m not sure Iran or N.korea really want you or Allen West, but that is what he is asking for. What makes that sort of thinking any different than the Tailban? Telling people you don’t agree with to get the hell out of the country is about as UN-AMERICAN an idea as i can think of.

      Rosie I’d question that, given that he was booted out of the military for violating the Code of Honor he swore to uphold, and for for violating the Geneva Convention that the United States is committed to uphold.

      Saying that people he disagrees with should “get the hell out of the country,” isn’t exactly in the spirit of the Constitution or reasonable political debate either.

      So what has he said or done that makes you think he’s such a great American?

      Don’t be silly. People say things like that all the time. (Maxine Waters- republicans can go to he**). They call it speaking figuratively. Beckel says only 20-22% espouse his ideology. He certainly has the right to speak, but their intention is to ram their ideology down the throat of the other 80%. Beckel is one that says there is no need to be concerned about the National debt, just keep spending. Problem is, when it’s too late, it’s over. There are no “do overs”.

      2009 to 2011 a 40% increase under Obama
      vs
      2001 to 2008 a 65% increase under Bush which includes 2 years of Democrat control/economic train wreck.

      So what was the increase between 2001 to 2006?

      Dogdr, If you want to talk about one side trying to shut up the other, be a conservative trying to speak at a liberal college, be a conservative and have a few OWS people in the audience – the left wrote the book on shutting down opposing views. Can you say Saul Alinsky? What Allen West was saying is the policies of Obama, Reid, etc. are not American – they are socialistic and do not belong in this great country of ours – they stifle economic growth and are making this a dependent country, not the independent country it has always been. It was a strongly worded message such policies are not welcome in the land of the free and the home of the brave. He wanted the agenda that is causing a massive growth in government dependency and an increase in regulations that are inhibiting business growth to get out of America. He was not speaking about the person advocating it.

      Representative Allen West isn’t afraid to tell us like it is, he thinks that we are smart enough and emotionally capable to handle the truth unlike most in Washington. Is he right? I see that even the people on the right side of politics (as opposed to left) are still voting for the plastic guy that will tell you whatever you want to hear avoiding the hard realities that might make us uncomfortable. I for one would rather hear the truth, it is unpleasant but it is also very necessary if we are going to save our union from an economic meltdown.

      I know all that. I just want to know what was the increase/decrease in the 6 year time span before dems took control vs the 3 years Obama has been in office. Regardless, 40% in 3 years is a hell of a lot bigger increase compared to 65% in 8 years.

      Allen West is a punk. He left the military in disgrace after simulating killing a prisoner by shooting his gun next to his head. He isn’t from the state or county he represents.       You have to appreciate the spirited defence of a man who was fined $5000 and admitted to violating the code of honor he swore to, and then left the service rather than face court martial. Some even suggested that the Code of Honor and the Geneva Convention, including the treatment of prisoners, only applies when you’re not at war. Those people aren’t too clear on the concept. Another example of politics trumping morality. Allen West needs to get the heck out of America, and get out now for the shame he’s brought to the military! He is un-American, a disgrace to this great country and is no longer is welcome here!

When someone is held up as a great American hero based on his politics rather than his words, actions or history, sure I object. You expect otherwise?       To those who believe LTC West violated the Geneva Convention, he didn’t. He did engage in conduct unbecoming an officer. He was fined and retired from active duty. Should he have turned the guy over to Military Intelligence? Yes. As a former Military Intelligence Officer, I believe MI should have interrogated the alledged terrorist. BUT, a commanding officer’s first moral imperative is to protect the lives of his subordinates to the best of his/her ability while accomplishing the mission. Until you have seen your soldiers killed or wounded because of a order you gave them, you will never understand why West did what he did. His actions effectively ended his career. He put his troopers safety before his career. That is a rare gift.

      Do I agree on his voting record? No.
      Do I believe he is a good man? Yes

      These liberal so called news people should not even be allowed in the same room with Mr.West.Congressman West is an American,Red,White,And Blue American that deserve every bit of Respect that this Nation has to offer him.I thank him for his service to this Nation and i know that its people like him that are still serveing in our Military thats going to keep this Nation free.WE have a President and Congress that want to see this Nation fall so they can take control of it but they know as long as there people like Mr.West to stop them they dont have a Chance,and there are a lot of them in Oathkeepers and in our Police forces and Nathional Guard units all across this great Nation.America is in danger because of the idiots that are now in charge but we have good strong Americans to stop these fools from gaining full control.American is safe as long as we have the Congressmen West,and we have many.God Bless everyone of them.

      If I remember right there was an attempt to get him in the presidential race awhile back, but I’m not sure. The American people are getting tired or our country being beaten down, put down, ridiculed, laughed at, and continually told how bad we are. We are bullies, the reason for the world’s problems and having more than anyone else. We are tired, sick and tired of the Liberal Democrats putting America down. The leaders of this condemnation in their party are Obama, Reid, Pelosi,Schumer,Durbin and supported by their doting comrades in the Liberal Media. We are literally worried about our country being destroyed from within by these radicals.
      Setting Col. West aside, of whom I am a big fan. I would like to point out a few truths that these ingrates choose to ignore. Whether they like it or not, the world looks up to this country as the leader of the free world. People do not have to be fenced in here as they used to be when the iron curtain was up. And this curtain was removed thanks to Pope John Paul II, Ronald Reagan, and Margret Thatcher. The scourge of Hitler and the Nazi Party was stopped by America and its allies, Take America out of the picture and many countries would be under the heavy hand of a dictator that currently have basic human rights. I am deeply concerned that if this wannabe dictator Obama isn’t defeated this year, America may well cease to be the bastion of freedom. Col West put voice to what we the people are unable to pronounce ourselves

When I heard that a former Soros strategist was hired as a commentator, that told me everything thing I needed to know about successfully Soros has applied the muscle to Fox after forcing Beck (and truth) off the air.       Again, you don’t tell the entire story. When you have a limp-wristed military that does not stand behind their field commanders to protect the troops, who will stand for the troops? The unbalanced actions in our current fields of battle require full support of our troops. We do not have trained civilian killers in our military. We have human beings with human faults. Until you can prove, not just state, you could complete the mission with zero errors/mistakes/snaps you should not comment.

    I never watch the Five, I stopped after two or three shows. None of the people on the show have opinions that matter to me and Beckel is disgusting.
    I have read more reasoned and informative opinions from some of the folks who comment here on the Blaze than from the Five.

    Colonel West owes NO ONE an apology for his remarks. He is everything the left hates. A smart, strong, conservative black American who is not afraid to speak his mind.

      Bolling, Perino and Gutman are Bush supporter type BIG GOVERNME REPUBLICAN ESTABLISHMENT types. Tentera is a Bush Republican with a tad of a Tea Party in here. All there Republicans think alike. WAR WAR WAR. Don’t cut the military. Blame everything on liberals but not on Bush/Dole/McCain/Romney type of big spending Republicans.

      @momrules…I agree. Since Beck left Fox, I can’t find a thing to watch anymore. I have GBTV and I can’t even watch that anymore. Beck trashes Gingrich, yet won’t say a word about Romney. Yes I like Santorum, but, Romney is a sheep in wolves disguise. I’ve never seen someone use such lies to take another person down. I don‘t care if folks don’t like Gingrich for his infidelities…I do care that Romney has deliberately distorted Gingriches past and has deliberately broken the eighth commandment. “You shall not bear false testimony against your neighbor” From my upbringing…”what does this mean?” We should fear and love God so that we do not tell lies about our neighbor, betray him, slander him, or hurt his reputation, but defend him, speak well of him and explain everything in the kindest way” Romney has lied and manipulated in every way to vanquish Gingrich.       I enjoy The Five, but mainly because of Gutfeld. I am in line with his conservative/libertarian thoughts. Perino is a total establishment Republican and I can’t stand her. She is exactly the type that got the Republican Party into trouble over the last 20 years. Bolling isn’t bad. Guilfoyle (sp?) and Andrea Tantaro (sp) are ok. Guilfoyle is mainly a show-off, but I like Tantaro.

      West was taken out of context. He said that his political opponents should get the hell out of the country. But that was taken out of context. Of course he refused to say he didn’t mean they should get the hell out of the country, but only that he was taken out of context. I guess “get the hell out of the country” needs some context in order to understand the nuance in that statement.

      Whatever. He made an outrageous comment (that anyone who disagrees with him should leave the country), but got in the news, created a memorable moment for his next election. That’s okay. But if her were smart he’d write a book and promote his book and increase his personal wealth by making provactive statements. That’s what Brewer did, and she’s a heck of a lot richer now than she was before she confronted President Obama on the tarmac.

    Come on…let’s get real. The ONLY reason Beckel is even slightly relevant, is because of Fox news. His greatest achievement is getting sober…other than that, he ran Mondale’s campaign which was an absolute abysmal failure. Rupert feels he needed to bring in a lib to offer “Fair and Balanced” commentary after Colmes left. I wish he would just jettison Beckel AND Jerry Rivers…no one cares what they say anyway.

      A crime that is treated leniently is a crime, nevertheless. “If it’s about the lives of my soldiers at stake” is a big if. No actual evidence was ever found that the police officer colonel West abused actually was an insurgent or had any useful information to give up. Even Colonel West has admitted that he might have been wrong about him.
