Westboro Baptist Church to Picket Joe Paterno’s Funeral

The near-universally hated Westboro Baptist Church has announced via Twitter that they plan to picket the funeral of legendary, yet publicly tarnished, former Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno.

The pseudo church organization is known for their extremely hateful views and disruptive protests at somber institutions and events such as funerals for American soldiers killed in the Middle East, the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, and Papal visits.
The 85-year-old Paterno was suffering from lung cancer and passed away Sunday, following months of public criticism for not doing more than his legal obligations when told of alleged sexual abuse conducted by his former Defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. Only days after the story broke and under intense media pressure, Paterno was fired following 46 years of service and donating over $4 million dollars to the university throughout his career.
“Joe Paterno is dead. WBC will picket his funeral,” wrote Margie Phelps, daughter of Westboro’s leader, Pastor Fred Phelps. “He’s in hell. Don‘t partake of your neighbor’s sin!”

Supporters have gathered at Penn State around the bronze statue of their former football coach since the news spread Sunday morning and USA Today reports that throughout the day, much of the coaching world, a legion of former players and even a former U.S.president weighed in.
“I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Joe Paterno,” said former President George H.W. Bush in a statement. “He was an outstanding American who was respected not only on the field of play but in life generally — and he was, without a doubt, a true icon in the world of sports. I was proud that he was a friend of mine. Barbara and I send our condolences to his devoted wife Suzanne and to his wonderful family.”
ESPN reports that a private funeral for Paterno will be held Wednesday, and his family has scheduled three days of public memorial events this week.
Thousands attended a candlelight vigil for Paterno in front of Penn State’s Old Main Sunday night.

Report Post »I have been very vocal in my disgust for the (non) actions of Joe Paterno, but HIS FAMILY deserves to mourn their loved one in peace. Funerals are for the living – the people who loved him and who he loved should be allowed to remember him as they knew him. Protesting his funeral – or anyone’s – is not only bad taste, it’s downright evil. I think it is reprehensible what he did by allowing that man to continue to have access to children on his watch. It is an unforgivable thing, but his family and friends do not deserve to be messed with in their time of mourning. Paterno is answering for his actions now. God is the judge of his soul. These Westboro freaks need to shut up and stay home.

Posted on January 23, 2012 at 8:21pmYou need to understand that Phelps and Company want violence, they want confrontation. It’s all about lawsuits and harassment. They don’t really care a fig about gays, about the military or about truth. They care about making headlines and winning suits.
I don‘t know anything about what JoePa did or didn’t do and I’m not in a position to judge him. That’s ultimately for the courts, and as for his eternal destiny, that‘s in God’s hands. And before everyone goes ballistic and claims I’m defending a child molester or anything like that, let me remind you that the ground is level at the foot of the Cross. We are ALL sinners and ALL sin separates us from God. It‘s God’s judgment call at this point, not mine and I am happy to let Him deal with it.
Finally, I would like to remind everyone of the Duke lacrosse mess where the coach was fired for actions that his team supposedly took. Later, the truth came out along with a very nice lawsuit against the university. Duke cut its losses too quickly and they paid for it — dearly. Penn State may some day find itself in the same position. I think it’s called BOHICA.

All they know and feel is that their beloved father, husband, grandfather, etc. is no longer with them and they miss him. Is Compassion completely lost on society today? Yea, I know it has long ago been lost in Washington,DC and the White House, but, WE THE PEOPLE are still here and WE have sympathy and compassion for those who have lost a loved one in whatever way and for whatever reason. Try to remember that. Also, try to remember God loves us all including all our warts and ugliness, but He offers mercy and forgiveness if we will just reach out and take it. When I read these posts each day, all I read is hatred, anger, ugliness of speech and descriptions, what has happened? God has been brushed aside, that’s what has happened. People are trying to do everything on their own without God‘s help or input and it doesn’t work that way. Inside everyone of us there is goodness, it just depends on how we allow it to develope or if we allow it to be buried by negative thinking and hatefull works and thinking.
God loved even Joe Paterno just as He loves all of us. Sometimes we just have to think with our hearts not our heads. God bless you all and may God bless and Comfort the Joe Paterno family. <3

Posted on January 23, 2012 at 4:35pmWigg – Certainly, I am no expert either. But in Romans 9:13, in reference to the elect (chosen people) of God, The Bible clearly states that the Edomites (descendants of Esau) are hated by God. Paul actually quotes the Old Testament prophet Malachi (1:3) to reiterate the point.
Its a pretty sketchy debate as to what “hate” means in The Scripture, I guess. I think maybe the point is this, if God does hate, its not our place to decide who He hates and who He doesn’t. Concerning the elect of God, The Bible says that Jesus is the judge of the “quick and the dead” (who He has chosen and who He hasn’t). Acts10:42
I think westboro needs to stop trying to be God and start trying to worship Him.
