HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — School officials say the students at a Pennsylvania school are getting sandwiches for lunch for failing to appreciate the hot meals the district provides.
The Harrisburg Patriot-News reports the pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade students at Camp Curtain School have received cold sandwiches this week as punishment for misbehavior, including failure to clean up after themselves.
An administrator tells the newspaper that behavior has improved. The official says the lunches still include fruit and vegetables.
Hot meal service will resume at the school on Monday.

Posted on May 13, 2011 at 12:27pmI have known enough teachers and school administrators to know that from their perspective our discussion of this issue is just plain silly. They have their PhD’s in education, we don’t, so its understandable to them that we are ignorant about such things. No one outside the teaching community is allowed to have any input on what goes on in our schools. We are just supposed to vote them another round of tax increases so they can keep their rich benefits and add more Mickey Mouse classes.

Posted on May 13, 2011 at 11:37amIt is scary to me how endemic the brainwashing is in this country. People are upset that *their* child isn’t getting their “due” in the school. Just as with Medicare and Social Security, we‘re only against the entitlements that don’t apply to us.
Your child isn’t entitled to ANYTHING from the government. You shouldn’t be upset at anything that goes on in the schools. You should be OUTRAGED that:
a) Our children are federally mandated to go to school at all. It‘s not the government’s business to dictate to parents how children spend their time.
b) Our federal tax dollars are being misappropriated to LOCAL schools which should be a state and local matter
Get off the plantation, people.

Posted on May 13, 2011 at 11:31amOh, the HORROR…..How dare a school even consider serving a COLD heartless SANDWICH!!!!!!…..probably tasted better than the hot, tastless, cardboard that is usually served. Ya it probably is the free lunch kids…..and yes my kids are free lunch kids as well but we taught them early to appreciate the hot lunches and if they wouldn’t eat them then I would send them with a sandywich or they starve till they get home…..which then of course whether they ate at school or not, they eat me out of the house anyway….

Posted on May 13, 2011 at 11:24amWhen I was in elementary school our hogies (aka subs) were awful. The bread in the things was always soaking wet, have you ever eaten wet bread? It’s disgusting. I was 23 when I finally ate subs again because my company meetings brought in some Subway subs for lunch.
Moving to cold sandwiches wouldn’t have been much of a punishment as the hot food in my school was just as bad. They even found a way to screw up spaghetti! How do you screw up spaghetti?

You don’t use food as a punishment stupid. Besides, kids love sandwiches. They are hungry by lunch time, they don’t care. Guess what mom’s put in their kids lunch boxes? Sandwiches. This school district is beyond ignorant.

Posted on May 13, 2011 at 11:47amI agree Kerri,
Report Post »Ms. Nobama should be outraged, using food as reward or punishment is just plain foolish and ignorant if one is concerned about childhood obesity (or any other eating disorder).
AND this would not work for either of my boys who love sandwiches- of course my boys would also clean up and behave themselves- and then come home and tell me exactly who DID NOT clean up their mess. I am positive my oldest son would even more likely tell the offenders to clean it up or just did it himself- not so positive of my youngest, but he will learn, we are working on it.
The staff or volunteers should have taken care of the problem by making sure the kids cleaned up. Parents are 100% responsible for teaching their children to behave and be responsible, but we should at least be able to know the school is HELPING us with follow through at school. I am sure there must be a rule about cleaning up your messes, the school should just enforce it with individual offenders, collective damnation is not necessary.

Report Post »Rickfromillinois
Posted on May 13, 2011 at 10:59amA human rights violation? Give me a break. They are being fed sandwiches. Maybe we should get the U.N. human rights division involved. Of course the rest of the world would first have difficulty understanding just what the punishment was and then after a lengthy explanation to them on what the punishment was we would really have a illegal emigration problem with all of the people trying to sneak in here.
Report Post »Mandors
Posted on May 13, 2011 at 11:10amThey are being fed sandwiches to inflict punishment. Not because the school district can’t afford anything else, not because the students prefer them. Whether in the context of refugee camps, prisons, prisoners of war (Geneva has expressed provisions on the subject) using or denying food to punish someone is prohibited. Certainly, the kids aren’t prisoners, but the school is completely out of line here.

Whew! I thought for a second that your post applied to the US! The United States does not recognize “international law” in regard to internal civillian matters (most of the time we don’t recognize it in military matters either.)
The serving of the revolting “nutriloaf” to prisoners has been upheld as *constitutional* because it contains the nutrition necessary for survival. So does a sandwich. You are dumb.
The ridiculous “international law” means nothing. Besides, let them step up to the Intergallactic Counsel of Heroes, who are always on my side of any given debate. Equally stupid. This is not *yet* your precious Global World and sovereignty still means something.

p.s. When the prisons serve the above forementioned “nutriloaf” it is as a *punishment.* Completely constitutional.

PLEASE! that sandwich is fit for a king. My first grader was allowed to bring in snacks from home. Sometimes cookies, sometimes fruit cups ( whatever I had and he wanted). The principal told me that the cookies were not allowed for snack because they had to be “ healthy and nutritious” by the school standards. This, ladies and gentleman, was Mom’s cookie war with the public school. I took it to the B of Ed and won. No one tells me what I may or may not feed my child. The school lunches stink anyway.

Posted on May 13, 2011 at 11:36amI agree. When I was a kid, there were no school lunches. I was lucky to have brought a sandwich from home which was more than likely a PB & J. When I went to High School, the rich kids could afford to pay 60 cents for a 1/2 bologna sub, 1/2 pint of ice cream and a 12 oz soda at the local corner store I wasn’t that lucky, I still brought my pb & j. Somehow I survived.

Its. A. Sandwich.
Seriously.
A sandwich is probably much healthier than the enemic, greasy hot lunch that is normally served. No messy trays, either, which is obviously the intended *point*. Your undue outrage indicates some sort of belief in entitlement for you, your kids, or anyone else in your circle of acquaintances. Someone should alert you to the fact that you and your spawn are entitled to nothing, are owed nothing, and can generally stuff it if you just want to whine all day and night. Nobody cares.

Next, I live about thirty miles upwind of Camp Curtin (yes, they spelled wrong). It’s bordered to the West by the red light district, to the East and South by a serious slum … You can bet your bottom dollar we’re talking about the “Free Lunch” program … The city is the state capitol, and is so far left it fell off the map years ago and I do believe they believe in the “collective system” (one kid messes up, they all pay) … Go figure, “The Left” using food as a punishment. Other than that, “Let them eat Sandwiches”.
