‘We’ve Got Jesus’ Chant Reportedly Sends High School Football Coach Into a Rage

Last Friday, Tom Bolden, the head coach of the Cincinnati Colerain high school football team, allegedly screamed at student supporters of an opposing team after they chanted “We’ve got Jesus!”
When the game between Colerain and St. Xavier Catholic concluded (Xavier won after Colerain missed a 45-yard field goal attempt during the last minute of the game), Bolden was reportedly so frustrated by the Christ-centered chants that he “charged out of his team’s huddle” and allegedly unleashed on the winning team’s student supporters.
According to sources who were at the event, the “We’ve got Jesus” chants were in response to an initial taunt from the Colerain student section — “We’ve got girls!”
See, Xavier is an all-male school, so Colerain’s chant was likely uttered in an attempt to tease the opposition over its homogeneous makeup. While the chant, itself, is somewhat of a non-story, Bolden’s purported outburst isn’t.
Below, watch him explain his frustration with the “We’ve got Jesus chant” (unfortunately the outburst, itself, wasn’t captured):
In your opinion, who should be ashamed — the coach or the students invoking Jesus’ name in their chant? Let us know in the comments section.

Posted on September 16, 2011 at 7:12pmWhy would anyone become so enraged at the name of Jesus?
“Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out, ‘What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!’ ‘Be quiet!’ said Jesus sternly. ‘Come out of him!’ The evil spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.” Mark 1:23-25

Posted on September 16, 2011 at 10:01pmMaybe he would be mad that some people believe Jesus is plays favorites at a sporting event. Maybe they were hoping Jesus would cheat for him like in the movie “Angels in the Outfield”.
That player at 5:09 who facemasked the runner, hit him behind the head as he was going down while ripping off his helmet, then punching him while on the ground sure had Jesus behind him. No flag no foul.

It is ok for the students at Colerain to chant “we have girls” but you can’t say JESUS!! Why do people get so upset when you mention JESUS. The Bible says that satan trembles at the name of JESUS!!! You go Xavier…………..keep saying you have JESUS!!!!! The Coach at Colerain should be ashamed of himself. THANK YOU JESUS!!!

Posted on September 16, 2011 at 4:38pmBetter than chanting foul language or saying nasty things about the other team. If they had chanted, “We have Mohammed”, I bet no one would have dared to complain. And had the coach gotten angry, his life might have been in danger.

But, at least you substituted “at the same time” for “but”
Nest time, try “however”

Posted on September 16, 2011 at 4:48pmIt is not as if God “takes sides”. That is not the point. It was a pep talk chant like any other…However it is the empowerment the INDIVIDUAL players feel knowing (or thinking) that if they have the Big Guy with them, it will make them better players. Non-believers like my father see that as a physiological boost so what is the harm? Why ridicule? It makes you look small.

Posted on September 16, 2011 at 4:53pmThe end result should tell the coach something. “Xavier won after Colerain missed a 45-yard field goal attempt during the last minute of the game”. Either he was the inferior coach or the chant worked!

Posted on September 16, 2011 at 5:46pmI am so disappointed!!! I thought Jesus determined the outcome of everything when called upon to do so. Load knows how he would handle a football game with opposing requests to win (one by each team). Hmmm, what to do?..what to do? I think Jesus has some really important things to do somewhere else other than a Cincinnati football game.

Co-ed secular school chants to the Catholic all male school, “We’ve got girls”.
Catholic all male school chants back, “We’ve got Jesus”.
It had nothing to do with prayer!
It had nothing to do with petitions to God for victory!
Heck, it really didn’t have anything to with the football game!
You just read the headline and posted the first thing that flew outta your butts.

Posted on September 16, 2011 at 10:53pmHey Locked,
Why is it so hard for you to think? I know you have issues with Christianity, but please try and contain yourself. When someone says Jesus picks sides it means that person believes that Jesus has law and justice and judgement is made, or to avoid a religious debate, he picks good over evil. No one honestly believes that Jesus would be in their stands instead of the other stands because he doesn’t like that school. Nor would they believe that he would be kept up late at night if his high school football team didn’t win. Way to resort to name calling via Jim Jones, Lord I hope you don’t call yourself a conservative. Yes I said Lord. If you had any idea what you were talking about, you would realize that these 15 year old boys ( yes coach, now who is embarrassing themselves?) were merely reacting to the other school’s chant. They probably meant that they were a Catholic/Christian school, and their administrators and parents thought it was more important for them to be educated in conjunction with religion rather than act like it didn’t exist while “Tammy” and “Jamal” made out in the back of the class during U.S. History.

“No one honestly believes that Jesus would be in their stands instead of the other stands because he doesn’t like that school.”
Thanks for the rant? Some of the posters here honestly believe that Jesus picks sides – in a football game. Because that’s the topic at hand.
I have no problem with Christianity – I have problems with fundamentalist Christians who literally believe God is on one side or the other of a football game… again, the topic at hand.

Posted on September 16, 2011 at 5:26pmSt. Xavier may be an all boy school but the only time you won’t find the place “crawling” with girls is during the class day. I know this for a fact since I had two sons go to school there. In my foolishness I asked my oldest why he wanted to attend an all boy school. His answer was “It’s not a problem.”. The first time I went into the school at the end of the day, I found out how true that was. Colerain may “have girls” in the classroom, however, there is no doubt that the men of St. X have no problem meeting young women.
