Why Did the ‘Deadliest’ SEAL Sniper Punch Jesse Ventura in The Face?

Imagine what would happen if a man in a bar told a group of Navy SEALs that he:
- Disagrees with the war.
- Believes they (the military) are murderers, killing innocent people… men, women and children
- Thought they probably deserve to lose a few of their own.
You are probably wondering if the guy making the offensive comments is still alive.
(Related: Sniper tells O’Reilly why he thinks enemy Iraqis are “savages”)
He is alive, and he also happens to be Jesse Ventura, a SEAL alum/reservist and the former governor of Minnesota.
Making matters worse, Ventura’s comments were directed at Chris Kyle, the Navy SEAL known as “the military’s deadliest sniper.”
This little known incident was brought out during an interview on SiriusXM’s Opie and Anthony radio show on Wednesday. Speaking exclusively to The Blaze, Gregg “Opie” Hughes explained that he had a tip to ask Kyle about his run-in with Jesse Ventura. So Opie casually brought it up and the story unfolded.
It was in 2006 when Ventura and the SEALs happened to be in the same bar, for very different reasons. The SEALs were holding a wake to honor a lost member of their team. Jesse was in town to speak to some new graduates of the SEAL program. During his military career from 1969-75, Ventura was a member of the Navy’s elite Underwater Demolition Team or UDT (the UDT was the precursor to the SEALs) and Jesse is a SEAL reservist. You might expect that sharing the history of membership in an elite military unit would garner a lifetime of mutual respect. Not so with Ventura.

As stated above, the SEALs were in the bar to mourn the loss of team member. They had gathered with the family of Medal of Honor recipient Mike Mansoor when Ventura made it known to many that he did not agree with the war. Kyle claims that he approached the former governor, and asked him to keep it down, informing Jesse that the family of the deceased was also with them.
That’s when Ventura unleashed more of his insensitive comments and Kyle reportedly countered with a one-punch knockdown.
Earlier this week, The Blaze featured a story about Chris Kyle and his autobiography that explains his amazing prowess with a rifle. We know now that Chris is also accurate with his fists and at close range.
Here’s the interview from the Opie and Anthony show on Wednesday. Chris Kyle explained the encounter with Jesse “the Body” Ventura.
(Content warning, this video contains what the Navy might call “salty language:”)
Following the interview, “Opie” says that Chris Kyle told him that very few people knew about the Jesse Ventura incident and that his source must be “very inside.”

Posted on January 5, 2012 at 7:21amHaving read all of the below postings, I must agree with many while I have some reservations with others. Yep, I would venture to say that Ventura has been a hero in his military role. BUT, I’ve heard him interviewed a number of times and he does come off as being far to the left on most subjects. He’s obviously had that typical Hollywood injection and it shows. Now, that is no reason to get into a fist fight, but also having seen how much of a loud mouth he has been in the past I can pretty well understand how Kyle lost his cool and punched him. Then that was it, it was just a quick bar fight between two SEALs then it was over.Sounds like it was kept really quiet until Opie must have heard rumors he wanted to clear up. I can respect and salute Kyle for being the patriotic hard charging SEAL that he is. But I don’t know anything else about him. I can also respect and salute Ventura for his role in the SEALs/UDT of the Vietnam era and his further work as a reservist SEAL. But, I do disagree with much of his politics, and in my humble opinion, he got what he deserved for being disrespectful l of the deceased such a Mansoor, and in front of his family.

These details are strange: Why was the “family of the deceased” drinking in a public lounge and why did they expect any or all of the other patrons to behave they way they wanted? Anybody can be sucker punched.
For those who think UDT are not SEAL material; they were special operations before it was cool.

Posted on January 5, 2012 at 12:38pmCouple of observations. First off, its no big deal for a younger stronger man to sucker punch an almost 70 year old man when he doesn’t expect it coming. I guess that may explain his shooting techniques as quoted from Full Metal Jacket. To kill old people and children you don’t have to lead them as much. I am also concerned that the ease at which they award Bronze and Silver Stars is alarming. My Grandfather was an Army sniper who killed over 30 North Koreans (have the citation to prove it) while his unit was over run and had half of his stomach shot away and only was awarded the Silver Star. It seems like the awards now given to the living appear to be more politically motivated for propaganda versus sacrifice. The one kudos I must give the SEAL is his reported accuracy. Having shot at 1000 yds and proven myself no marksmen, I highly respect those who train to the peak of their capabilities to pull off those achievements.

Seriously? He should be executed for punching Ventura? How about Ventura shouldn‘t have been saying that they DESERVE to die at a f’n wake for one of the fallen team members? Where family and friends are in attendance.
I know the nation has become sissified, but if this was 20 years ago, Ventura wouldn’t have been able to walk out under his own power, and I don’t think anyone would have felt sorry for him.
He’s lucky that all he got was a punch in the face. The idiot shouldn’t have been flapping his gums at a wake for a fallen SEAL member where the family could hear him saying that the young man DESERVED to die.
If anyone deserves respect, it’s the SEAL that punched him and then backed off. He could have torn Ventura to shreds.

Posted on January 5, 2012 at 1:05pmWell, for one thing you are wrong. To blame hollywood for Jesse Ventura’s anti-war stance is ignorance of the highest order. First of all, I assume that you have neither served nor have you served in an actual combat role. There are two things that you learn really quick through combat: 1) That the first on the line for peace are the men and women whom have actually had to take another’s life in combat. Secondly is that there are no atheists in foxholes. (the second has little to do with the conversation, but it is important to note.). These two things are truths.
Both men, were wrong. First Jesse was wrong because while expressing your disdain for the illegal war that we are waging is well within your first ammendment rights, you have to have some sense of personal responsibility. There are appropriate times and places for these diatribes and during a memorial service for one of our fallen sons is not one of those.
Now, Mr. World’s so called deadliest sniper was completely in the wrong for 1) striking a vet and a coward for striking a senior citizen. Big tough Seal, beating up old men in bars. So all that cool, calm and collected awesomeness that is supposed to make you so special and deadly was completely thrown out the window because of Jesse Ventura? Really? So much for that Seal training huh?

Frankly, I enjoyed seeing the story about someone being in the right place at the right time to teach him a lesson in humility, since he has never had any. Presumably the Navy was getting some recruitment benefit from allowing this loud mouth to represent the service but incidents like this hopefully resulted in a reduction in his Navy-paid speaking engagements. Don’t feel sorry for Ventura as an old man. As for the bereaved family being in a bar for a rememberence of their lost member, it is not unusual at all for the members of a unit (especially one as unique as the SEALs to hold a wake in the person’s honor while including both loved ones, buddies who worked with that man, and others who are there to show their respect for one of their own. Just leave it at that…..

Posted on January 5, 2012 at 8:37pmThe dude is a coward. We only heard this side of story. Jesse Ventura has a freedom of speech. He is free to express his opinions. Agreeing or disagreeing with opinions is a different subject. He slapped 60 year old man and then ran away. At face value, it is a cowardly act. On top of that he did commit a crime of battery and assault. Someone who commits a crime is a criminal. His lack of control his emotions makes him a danger to society. What a role model

Kyle is a throwback Navy Seal after the order of Richard Marcinko. Once upon a time Ventura was probably pretty cool, but with age and becoming politicized he’s just another puss nutted pencil pushing geek that young motivated Seals eat for breakfast.
Real or embellished the man is a proven “Shooter”. Only a fool would get in his face and try to degrade the service they represent. Ventura should just be grateful that he’s still alive.

Posted on January 8, 2012 at 10:39pmTurns out that this creep is a liar. Here is the statement from former Governor Jesse Ventura
The event this man spoke of never happened. I have been to Mc P’s many times since leaving the Navy. I was never there alone. I was always accompanied by other people. If this happened 6 years ago, someone would have known of it before now. Certainly in the UDT/SEAL community it would have been known. This has to be news to all of us.
I have always opposed the war in Iraq but I have never spoken or wished any ill will towards the soldiers. My heart aches that soldiers have died or been wounded because this war should never have taken place. I am perplexed over the agenda this man has and why a fellow Navy Seal would tell a lie about an event that never happened.
Clearly between this story and the previous week’s story about supposedly getting pulled over for tailgaiting in CA that was also a lie, someone is out to destroy my credibility. I find it very interesting that both these stories are being spread by Fox news and it’s affiliates. As a Navy veteran you realize you can’t believe every sea story you hear. Let me finish by stating both of the recent two national stories about me are completely untrue lies, neither event ever happened.

How you’d ever think that calling the men and women of our military murderers would convince people of love and faith to follow your hollow cause is beyond me.
I had a close friend who went down a terrible path of hatred and self-loathing during his late teens and early twenties. He went from being an awesome guy, one that everyone wanted to be around, to someone everyone avoided. How did this happen? He became a militant liberal to the chagrin of his friends. His mind became so riddled with hatred for the land which rescued him, an unwanted child from South America, from death through adoption, that he began to hate the men and women of the military in the same way you so ineloquently derided. It was not long thereafter that his hatred replaced any sense of passion or love in his heart, and three months ago he killed himself.
Get rid of the hate in your heart. Everything you’ve ever posted only shows that you have hatred – but not an ounce of love. That needs to change, or else you’ll eventually find yourself confronted with the same decision as my dear friend.

The guys that don‘t excel don’t get selected to go onto advanced training and/or real ops. There are those who barely qualify in the Seals just like anywhere else. It would not surprise me if that is where Ventura spent his time, and was kept in support roles, never seeing much action. This could make a man very insecure, and could explain a lot about his adult life after the Navy.

Posted on January 5, 2012 at 11:00am@TWINSPEEDR – Ventura was UDT. But he joined the Navy and went UDT when UDT and Naval Special Warfare were two seperate tracks. While serving in Vietnam doing river patrol support work and clearing operations (no direct combat or SEAL like operations) the Navy combined the two tracks. From what I understand at that point he (like the rest of the UDT personnel) was transfered to the Teams and started to conduct operations. From what I also understand, this is a sore spot in the Teams…it was then and still is now. A lot of folks do not consider him a SEAL because he (like alot of UDT personnel) didn’t go through BUD/S, which is a more rigourous and little changed since inception process. The UDT course was difficult, but not to the same level. Nor did it have the same skill sets…some core stuff but not the same.
At any rate, technically he was made a SEAL like military forces re-source or re-MOS people all the time when they combine or change skill tracks. But there are a lot of folks who even to this day don’t think he should be calling himself one.

And yeah, maybe Jesse Ventura was a part of UDT at one time but there‘s always the ones that slip through the wire and get in where they don’t belong, no matter what organization you’re talking about. In my opinion, if he was truly a part of a team like that, and truly committed to it, he would never turn his back on it or what it stands for. And he SURE wouldn’t disrespect their dead and the family of the dead, which is EXACTLY what he did. He obviously has some kind of connections. A rich uncle or something who probably got him in the UDT program.
And Jesse Ventura hasn’t put anything “on the line” except his signature on the back of a paycheck, he’s an opportunist, looking to make a buck. Bottom line, he’s an actor at best. He probably should have just kept his mouth closed and everything would have been alright.

Keep in mind that different branches of the service, especially those who place themselves in harm’s way most often (Seals), generally have internal customs. I would expect that Mr. Ventura violated one such custom in his chosen behavior and had the mark to show for it.
At least Ventura didn’t press charges or file suit. I don‘t know what you would see from some members of today’s “all-inclusive, touchy-feeley” Obama military; probably a class-action suit for being yelled at during basic training.

I sincerely doubt that the men and women who die on the battlefield today are doing so to save the Constitution. There are those who do follow only constitutional orders, but they are usually NJP‘d or court martial’d for disobeying a direct order or insubordination.
Please remember that I am a Marine and I do not want to belittle the death of fellow service members. But their sacrifices may be in vein. This is through no fault of their own, but it is the fault of a nation that sends its’ children to fight wars which have no defined victory, no defined enemy, and no end. To believe that every 18 year old has read the Constitution and knows what they are taking an oath to defend is ludicrous. They should at least have every member read it during boot camp or prior to enlistment. It doesn’t take that long. Unfortunately, they are so focused on just recruiting bodies and making them subordinate, that they don’t teach the ideas that would truly unite our fighting men and women for a single cause.

I am more inclined to think that if Obama keeps going the way he is going that the danger is more likely on top of the ground. But the underground might be because he is planning to let Iran get a nuclear bomb and we all know that they will use it.
But as to the actual subject of the article
Jessie had it coming. and I read about someone bashing them for being in a bar. Most old fashion wakes are held in bars. And the bar was a SEAL bar. There are bars that cater to SEALS, Cops, Lawyers, Cowboys and other groups. That is where those groups have their events. There is nothing new or out of line there.

Posted on January 5, 2012 at 11:23pmIt’s a crying shame that the Wattaburgers are able to control SEALs like Kyle into attacking good, upstanding men like Ventura who expose the truth about things like Dick Chaney personally blowing up the levees in New Orleans, the CIA spreading Whooping Cough in the Mongolian community, and Lex Luthor assasinating the Kennedeys.

While I respect his service (at least the military service not the political) that respect does NOT equal a free pass from future criticism. This is the 21st century -and people-not nation states or regimes are thinking and speaking for themselves. The old paradigms -[patriotism, obeying orders etc] need no longer apply. Imperialism, militarism needs to be exposed and confronted and the dead soldier would not be dead if he hadn’t signed up to go drop bombs on men women and children of iraq. he lived by the sword he died by the sword.-my solidarity is with the iraqis he murdered in the name of americanism. Glorifying the troops is insidious and evil. This is the 21st c -not nazi germany.

Posted on January 5, 2012 at 5:15pmI am Army but feel the need to praise UDT inspite of Ventura. UTD has a solid traditon developed from the hard hat diving days. My best friend’s older brother was UDT. He was trained in hard hat diving, underwater recon for mines, setting underwater demolitions to destroy enemy ships and shore facilities and beach scouting for Marine landings. UDT members aren’t wimps. They just had a different purpose from SEALs. The Navy got smart and combined them.
Having said that, I will repeat my earlier posting. No matter what Ventura did or didn’t do in the Navy, he was a veteran. When Ventura learned that the SEAL team was having a wake for a fallen MOH recipient, he should have stopped commenting and exxpressed his sympathy.

Posted on January 5, 2012 at 8:07amIn order to understand jesse Ventura, one has to understand what Pro Wrestling is.
Pro Wrestling is NOT about bad guys vs. good guys in a fiction struggle over imaginary champiuonships. Pro Wrestling is a side show carny act designed o put and @$$ ever 18 inches and separate the mark from his money. Pro Wrestlers just happen to use the tactic of controlling the emotions of their audience. Just like any other carny, there is a definite art to it. having said that…
Jesse Ventura is a fictional character. he does not exist. James Janos is the real person. Janos is from the school of Pro Wrestling where one is expected o “protect their gimmick” at all times. That meant whenever Janos was at a restaurant, a bar, the grocery store, the airport, the mall, etc., he was expected to be “Jesses Ventura” the character.
As with the case of many older, retired Pro Wrestlers, Janos is using “Jesse Ventura” to make money. Since his body can’t take the very real punishment that comes with being a Pro Wrestler, Janos had to evolve the character into a conspiracy theorist in order to keep making a living off the name “Jesse Ventura”.
I‘d be willing to bet good money that Janos doesn’t believe half of what he says as “Jesse Ventura”. Unfortunately for him, he still subscribes to the outdated carny tactic of “living his character” in public to sell the Ventura personna.
The result of “living his caharcter” in public to sell tickets got his butt kicked in public
