What Deadline? Gates Says U.S. Open To Staying in Iraq

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates says the United States is open to the idea of keeping troops in Iraq past a deadline to leave next year — if the Iraqi government asks for it.

Gates says the U.S. will “stand by” for such a request once the country ends an eight-month political deadlock and forms a new government. He says the U.S. is “ready to have that discussion.”

Gates is urging Iraq’s squabbling political blocs to form an inclusive government. But he says he has not weighed in with any of the leaders directly.

The leaders are holding three days of discussions — their first such gathering since elections in March.

    Why are we still in Iraq I mean Pakistan, Somalia, Yeman, and Mexico are bigger threats and priorities. I‘ll be glad when Gates is gone but its going to suck when Obama replaces him with a Soros Crony who’s going to be a pacifist.

    Why not ‘stay’ in Iraq? We stayed in Germany. We stayed in Korea. We stayed in many western european nations. We stayed in Japan. We created the U.N. to get us into places that we couldn’t get into legitimately. Now that Iraq is the new mexico, they owe us, right?

      bring our guys HOME and build MEGA-bases in the middle of each State. then like the ancient Chinese and Romans, BUILD A BORDER WALL the entire length of our border, using our troops as its construction workers. hey, it’s a respectable JOB, they’d still be PAID, and they would be ARMED as well.

    I knew it was going to come to this. Persoanlly I believe that we should have a presence there for our intrests and thiers. But all the hype about us getting out and having a hard deadline was false. Maybe, just maybe, the taliban will realize that the US will be around to help control them and bring peace to the region, maybe they will try to come to terms and peace terms and quite the fighting. (I know that was a really bad runon sentance.)

    Once again Obama has demonstrated that his word is as worthless as a russian ruble. This part of us ‘standing by’ will just again get us caught up into a total quagmire worse than vietnam and incite even more violence towards America.

      Also we should have gone in with the Knightofhopex approach and told Germany and France to get their dirty oil money taking corrupt hands blown up and shot off taking care of things over there without us. Personally I’d love it if we just went after, you know, terrorists and stuff. Worst comes to worst, let Isreal clean house. Their military is awesome. That’s just my opinion though.

      You do know we are sending our troops into harms way with the safety on. When you go to WAR the objective is to kill your enemy and take his stuff. This so called war on terror is not working with the current strategy, because nobody in Washington has the stomach to do what’s necessary because they don’t want to be seen as un-PC. PC has no place in war and neither do “Panty Waste People who Can’t Handel the TRUTH.

      I expect no more from a country full of people that now think football players hit to hard & dodge ball harms the self esteem of children. GROW A PAIR! If you think they don’t want you and yours dead your sadly mistaken.

      I hate the site of a bodybag. I hauled too many in my youth. But a body bag for my enemy is a welcome site.

      The actual solution, is a binding Status of Forces Agreement with the current GVT in AF.

      I think about 50-100 yrs should do the trick. That would demoralize the Talib, knowing they’re going to be getting their A$$es kicked around the mountainsides for the next 50-100 years, not to mention the technology we’ll develop in the mean time. AND… that is what we should do tactically, a massive remote technology campaign to whack them remotely from many miles way.

      Karzai is not perfect, but that would keep the Warlords from cutting his throat BEFORE we’ve even left, and give PLENTY of time for everyone to get used to the notion that we are VERY, VERY serious about this, it’s not a lark.

      WE ARE NOT GOING TO LET TALIB GET A HOLD OF THE WORLD.

      This idea of pulling back behind broad oceans, polishing nukes, is not going to work. It’s only going to help them take over the world. We tried that tactic leading up WWII, “America, stays at home”…. it only provokes them and makes them believe they can get away with it whilst we are weak.
