The story hasn’t even hit newsstands yet, but already, New York Times author Mark Leibovich is drawing lots of attention over his exclusive peek into Glenn Beck’s personal and business lives.
Glenn seemed to be ok with it, but what do Times readers think? During an online TimesCast Q&A Wednesday, Leibovich fielded readers’ various questions, including, “Why give this crackpot a forum?”
“The reason is quite simply that this is someone who’s attracted a major following in recent months,” Leibovich replied. “He is someone who’s been consigned to a lot of caricature, and also a lot of worship, depending on where you come down. … We wanted to spend some time with him and hopefully give readers a fuller sense of the dimensions that make him and make his views.”
Another reason to write about him, as Mediaite points out, “Glenn Beck is hot right now. Keith Olbermann loves reading about him, Jon Stewart is alleged to be obsessed with him, and Greta Van Susteren thinks he is ‘nice.’”
Among other questions Times readers had for Leibovich included: “Does Glenn Beck seriously believe what he preaches, or is he the best actor the world has ever witnessed?” and “Why is everything either black or white, communist or capitalist, all good or all bad with Glenn Beck?” Jump ahead to latter half of the video to see Leibovich’s answers:

Posted on October 1, 2010 at 8:39amYou may not like this, but the fact of the matter is that there was an almost immediate and steadily increasing decline in the level of safety and civility in America since we allowed God to be taken out of public view, since we allowed the Ten Commandments to be stricken from our courthouses. I am not promoting only a belief in God as what makes a person good, but a reminder that all good people live by certain principles, which are embodied in the Commandments, and the golden rule: to treat others as you would have them treat you. When I was 16, if my boyfriend would have seen a man hit or curse at a woman in public, he would have invited that malefactor outside, and he would not have been alone. Every male in the area would have expressed their “disdain” for that creep. What happened?
Report Post »Since the removal of those things from public view, the thing I notice the most is this: people USED to hang their heads and look embarrassed when caught committing a crime and now they make a music video of the event. You may not like it, but the removal of God from the view of society has caused a degeneration of the society. I wholeheartedly believe that it was the removal of the collective “conscience”, that “little voice” that bugs most of us if we aren’t doing right. No, I don’t believe that only God believers have a conscience. I make no judgement against those who don’t believe. I know quite a few atheists and agnostics (I’m married to one) and without exception they are fine people, the ones I know. But they are my friends; therefore we share a value system of being law-abiding, kind and compassionate people with a defined sense of right and wrong which doesn’t need religiosity to compel behavior.
The removal of the reminders of Godly principles from public view has given (certain) people permission to forget that Americans traditionally lived and behaved in a manner where lawless acts and “welfare mentality” is not tolerable, (as you sow, so shall you reap or in secular language for those who object to the Biblical reference: If you work, you eat). Now people hold their heads high and take all they want, they game the system by collecting government checks they don’t deserve, they treat the rest of us like we‘re stupid for wanting to pay our own way and live by good principles on money we didn’t steal by deceiving the taxpayers into believing we could no longer fend for ourselves and our families and need help. If they steal our purse, so what? If they beat us up in the process, well then we should have just given them what they wanted in the first place! Where is my America, the one I grew up in?
There are no atheists in foxholes, case in point:
My husband, who is an agnostic, was driving home from work one winter evening and an ice-storm ensued over top of the blizzard we had just had the previous night. This was before we had cell phones, and as he was three hours late I was obviously very concerned. I had the news on with all the “live breaking video” of cars and trucks over embankments and on their rooftops, and various and sundry other horrors of driving Pittsburgh metro-area highways. When he finally arrived home, he said, “I was absolutely terrified. I prayed all the way home!” Puzzled, I asked, “Honey, to Whom did you pray?”

Posted on October 1, 2010 at 6:33pmGlenn doesn’t claim Americans need to come back to God in a “Mormon” kind of way. He simply says we need to come back to God as a nation, as a people. The progressives are AFRAID of that. They lose control. They won’t embrace belief in God because they would then have to face their values are ungodly.
And I think Fox WILL stand with him. Fox has withstood political pressure before – and I believe Ruport Murdoch is a man of honor and wouldn’t fold to that kind of pressure even if it meant hurting his network. And Beck? He’d continue to draw people because Americans are HUNGRY for his type of activism. Beck, much like Palin, speaks to the everyday American. He’s me, he’s you, he’s all of us. And I’m D*&M sick and tired of the left trying to villify him (me, you the country).

You, Glen, with your chalkboards, endless energy and research have helped us to make sense of so much of what has been framed and see more clearly where we are heading if we don’t stand together, pray together and work together to save our beloved America.
You have done so much and made such a huge difference in so many lives already. It’s unfair to ask more of you but please keep on shining the light, Glen. Posted on October 1, 2010 at 2:27amGlen Beck is our modern day Jeremiah. Come to warn us and tell us the truth about what is going on. Of course, he will have enemies, so did the Jeremiah of the Old Testament. They treated him awful, but he warned, he plead, he cried out to the people and they laughed at him, put him down a well, imprisoned him but he told the truth and the day came that the people laughed no more. They were brought into captivity just as Jeremiah warned if they did not repent and turn back to God. . If it were not for Glen Beck pleading with America, understanding that there is no way out of this except through God, rallying the people, getting us back to our roots, we might know something was wrong, but we would never know the real truth about the horrible things going on in our government and their evil plans for our nation. The Bible tells us that there will come a day when there will be One World Government, One World Economy and Religion. Is this the beginning, the dawn that will come before the tribulation? I do not know. But I do know that Glen Beck has done what I believe God destined him to do, to bring our people back to God. If our people come back to God and live before Him in the way God set forth, then we can save our nation. We have never in our lives been in a more important fight than we have on our hands right now. So thank you Glen Beck, I know it isn’t easy. If you know the book of Jeremiah, you know that he was born specifically for the purpose of trying to bring God’s people back to Him. He was told by God that he would be rejected. Why did he do it? Wouldn’t it have been easier to just say, “What’s the Use.” Yet he did what God wanted and was faithful to the end. Pray America, pray as you never have before, for there is an evil out there that wants to destroy us.

Posted on October 1, 2010 at 9:04amThe New York Times is the nearest thing we have in America to Stalinist Russia’s Pravda! That they would even mention Glenn is AMAZING! They are petrified of him as is Obama,Reid, Pelosi and the rest of those in Washington who think that they know how you should live your life. Those who want to dictate to you what’s best and remove all your choices. That is the thinking of those on the far left. Of course, there are those on the far right with the same agenda, they think they should tell you how to live. Dictatorship isn’t confined to any single political idiology.
Just remember the “free” elections in Russia, China, Nazi Germany and Cuba where the ballot listed only one party approved candidate for each office.
The far left and right are truly afraid of the REAL history of this country. Glenn is opening the minds of many who have been deprived of our true heritage because of the leftist manipulation of the history books used in American schools. The facts have been warped to deny the real reason why people came to our shores, religious and political freedom. He is urging people to get the facts and then make their own decisions. This is the true American way and that is what made this country the greatest country in history.
Glenn dosen’t expect you to believe him outright. He encourages his viewers and listeners to look up the information themselves. Amazingly, people are doing exactly that and are finding out what the real truth of American history is.
He, as a lot of us do, realize that if we don’t know history, we are doomed to repeat it. The far left wants sheep, not thinkers – - – why do you think they have worked so hard to dumb down the population. The uninformed cannot make intelligent decisions! Americans, GET INFORMED AND THINK! MAKE YOUR OWN DECISIONS!
