What Does Author Tim Ballard Say Americans Must Do to ‘Save This Nation’?

Author Tim Ballard is on a mission to deliver a message that he believes will have a monumental impact on America’s survival: God is the author of the United States’ story — and the nation‘s future sustainability is predicated upon citizens’ reliance upon Him. Ballard’s new book, “The Covenant,” delves into the country’s rich history and its role in biblical prophesy.

Throughout the text, Ballard contends that America‘s founding fathers had a profound understanding of God’s grace and the importance of a covenant with the Almighty to ensure continued growth and success.

Tim Ballard Discusses The Covenant With The Blaze & Glenn Beck

In assembling “The Covenant,” Ballard sifted through the country’s robust history. In the end, he discovered what he believes is evidence that God explicitly participated in and oversaw the manifestation of the U.S. Through inspiring narrative, the author hopes to instill a profound love for the homeland and a deep appreciation for the covenant that played such a prominent role in America’s creation.

An official description of “The Covenant” explains more about the author’s intentions:

Why did Christopher Columbus assert that he was “guided by an angel” at the moments of greatest distress? What prompted the original colonists to embrace the idea that the land of America was “New Israel” to them? What power urged Washington and his rag-tag army to successfully conquer the greatest military power on earth? What brought about the terrible national crisis that left our nation grieving, humbled and repentant after the desolation of Civil War? [...]

The answers to these, and many other questions relating to America’s real national treasure are found in the pages of THE COVENANT.

In his new book, author Timothy Ballard answers both HOW and WHY the America’s very existence stands in fulfillment of ancient biblical prophecy.

The Blaze spoke with Ballard about this intriguing book on Thursday. During the interview, he explained the 10-year journey that he embarked on to complete the project. While working at his day job, the author — and father of six children — would carve out three hours every morning (from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m.) to delve deeply into the words he hopes will better frame America’s past — and future.

“Initially I thought, ‘I’ll start on a chapter or two about the founding fathers.’ I didn’t think I was going to say anything that hadn’t been said 100 times before,” Ballard said, noting that he inevitably proved himself wrong. “It ended up being an entire book on where the power of good is derived from.”

Tim Ballard Discusses The Covenant With The Blaze & Glenn Beck

Ballard contends that America’s founding fathers tapped into an ancient power to build the nation — a feat they accomplished against all odds. The founders, being well-versed in Biblical understanding, believed that the U.S. was a new Israel of sorts, birthed out of a relationship and a covenant with the Almighty. Ballard maintains that, in contemporary times, the nation risks losing its blessings if individuals don’t recognize the importance of the covenant and an ongoing relationship with God.

“Those who understand the covenant feel an affinity to Israel,” Ballard explained. “The covenant is a promise between God and his people and the relationship is one of mutual action – God will deliver if we do what he tells us to do — if, as a nation, we strive to live worthy of it. It has nothing to do with denominations. I don’t care what faith you are – as long as you’re believing in God.”

So, what are these blessings, you ask? According to Ballard, they are liberty, protection and prosperity — all elements that the U.S. has traditionally enjoyed. Each, of course, provides substantial benefits to individual citizens and the nation’s survival as a whole. When the “mutual action” that Ballard spoke about is engaged, he claims that “there’s a response from heaven again and again.”

On radio yesterday, Glenn Beck spoke with him in-depth about “The Covenant”:

For those who would dismiss the author’s views, he posed some interesting questions. To begin, he pondered how America’s founding — her transformation from an infant nation with little resources and ability to history’s most profound mega-force — would be possible without God’s intervention.

Historically, he says, the covenant has been able to help American leaders defy the odds. Ballard maintains that both George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, based on the difficult times during which they lived, relied upon covenants between themselves and the Lord.

Here‘s a trailer from a documentary currently being produced surrounding Ballard’s ideals:

And when it comes to naysayers who claim that the founding fathers were irreligious or mere deists, Ballard has a stark response, calling such a notion “ridiculous.” He says that these ideas contradict Washington’s own words — words of encouragement for individuals to become more spiritually-driven. Even the Continental Congress issued calls for Americans to come back to the Lord, Ballard maintains.

“I hope they return to the covenant because it’s our only hope. I hope they read this book and understand that our history is a repeat of what happened in the Old Testament,” Ballard said of the elements he prays readers take away from the book. “In a way, we’re living scripture…it’s a choice…will we return to the covenant…or stick with the flesh? The idea is — if we want to save this nation — we need to return to the covenant.”

Ballard appeared on GBTV on Thursday evening to further discuss the importance of the covenant:

Many, though, will wonder what, exactly, this all means. Ballard had some answers, specifically when it comes to how individuals can make an impact on restoring the covenant. The author says that every citizen should go to his or her house of worship and pray that the Lord would receive America as his land. Encouraging the government to invoke God at the highest levels, he maintains, is not a violation of the First Amendment and such actions should be encouraged.

“I’m optimistic. If I had no hope, I wouldn’t have tried to put the message out,” he said, maintaining his belief that Americans will restore the covenant. “I think we can – it’s our choice. The best way to inspire those spiritual feelings that will return the nation to the covenant is to read the founders’ stories.”

Ballard encouraged Blaze readers to examine America’s history “prayerfully,” as he believes doing so will enable God’s spirit to reveal the true tenets associated with the founding.

Ballard’s next book, a sequel to “The Covenant,” will focus upon the Civil War and the challenges Abraham Lincoln faced as the nation was divided like never before. For more information on his book, which was released this week, click here.

We should remind unto thee that that as one known as Jesus did need kneel in prayer unto his Father, yet he knew within his heart that his Father’s words and his Father’s work was more important than his own needs or wants, and therefore, he walked from the olive grove to the hill of the skull, and therefore, let his blood flow upon the earth freely. A prophecy, February 16, 1973: “There shall be dividing of a land, and the land we spoke of was not of your people, but of your earth. And it shall be as a great Sword that cuts two ways, both of the land and of the people. But we shall do the cutting. We shall say in this manner, bring forth all your people into one house. And those who refuse to come unto the house, let them remain outside, and they shall be no more, for we shall weed your garden in this manner. But as we have said before, the action that shall be taken upon your parts shall be in accord with the laws of your land….
“The house we have spoke of is the house of Jerusalem that stands here and now and should house the many souls of the many people of the many faiths who should enter with a love of God within their heart and a love of mankind in the same manner….
“Our Lord should say unto you these words. ‘HARK, FOR I DID NOT GIVE UNTO YOU THE TEN COMMANDMENTS UNTO MOSES AND TO THE CHILDREN OF GOD THAT YOU SHOULD DEFILE THEM. KEEP THEM SACRED FOR NOW AND ALWAYS. CARRY THEM BEFORE YOU AS A SACRED TRUST.’
“And we should say unto you in this manner, should you be attacked, it shall be because of these weapons.”
    “What weapons…?”(a man asks.)
“We shall lay waste to the land that lays with under these who should attack your Prophet. But do not go unto the desert without provisions of the same.” (spoken by spiritual messengers of God)

This narrative began with Abraham in the old testament account. America has not replaced Israel, if any thing Israel has blessed America by virtue of their connection or relationship which Tim Ballard demonstrates (this America/Israel relationship) in his book.

    Genesis 17:1-7 KJV
1 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.

2 And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.

3 And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying,

4 As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.d

5 Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.

6 And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.

7 And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.

see also: Genesis 28:14, Genesis 49 (all) Take note of the first verse of Genesis 49,

    Here‘s what I’m saying:

To focus on the “Founders-were-godly-trope” is idiotic and solves NOTHING.

Low-brained Churchianity obsesses on all things lacking self-awareness, yet rube-creating; lacking ithe sense of history, yet always making more easily duped, easily penned, easily sheared sheep!

The Word of Faith crowd has been crowing the old “God-covenant-USA’ meme since forever, and what good has that brain-stopping mantra produced? The Copeland Ministry might sue Ballard for copyright infringement, if Mandarins from TBN’s “God-covenant-USA” Mesmer crowd notices.

Imagine, if you will, we travel with H. G. Wells to visit the Eloi in the future. And we are surprised to find this Stone Age crowd has one example of technology! They are pushing carts sporting pneumatic rubber tires! And they chant the mantra: “OUR FOUNDING car makers believed in, get this, PNEUMATIC RUBBER TIRES!

We would shake our heads sadly at the stupefied Eloi, because there’s a LOT MORE to car-making than putting air-filled rubber tires on a cart!

Our country’s Founders figured two things rightly: There is one God above us all and there is one universal philosophy of Western Civil Society… Therefore, sheep and plebes must know that leaders are not angels and the con is always on!

Check the other hand of EACH leader. Where is self-dealing? Is it his conning book? The helicopter panorama video mantra? Where is mutual dedication to self-restraint?

“But 9 times out of 10, it‘s a BIG CON to RIP YOU OFF and make you think you’ve done something patriotic. But it’s usually IDIOTIC! And the OPPOSITE of Liberty, which is mutual dedication to self-restraint and being eternally vigilant against leadership self-dealing!

OR… Glenn Beck could sell books to audiences, telling them it will help the USA. (MOO-HA-HA!)

The books would be from half-aware authors, whose readers would also have to be half-aware.

The books would say that if humankind is not angelic, it is nevertheless impossible for book-authors-expert-Aristocrats to be not be angelic.

The hosts of the show might admit that if humankind is not angelic, be assured nevertheless: hosts are ALWAYS trustable and angelic!

Basically all LEADERSHIP, all AUTHORS, all EXPERTS must say that even if humankind is not angelic, and it’s EASY to point out certain problems and problem-makers… the ONE pointing all this out… IS NEVER TO BE QUESTIONED… because somehow… HE MUST BE ANGELIC!

Thus ARISTOCRATS always are ANGELS! ALWAYS!

The switch over from our system to the NWO will be much more painful here than, say, china or russia, who have lived under repressive governments for generations. We have some say in the matter, though, martyrdom or slavery.
Because, we Americans are quite an ornery lot, and armed to the teeth. Fascist tactics will be used against us. Their armaments will be superior. I think they will be foreign troops, eastern European, probably. It may turn out that the fema “detention” camps, are death camps. To secure the foundation for the NWO utopia the world’s population must be reduced, drastically. The magic number seems to be 500 million. They apparently have a lot of killing to do.

Yes, I agree that we do need to pray. We’d need to pray even if our nation was not going downhill rapidly. I listened to Ballard on Glenn’s show and he has good thoughts and good ideas and his advice is worth taking. However, I do vehemently disagree that there is any “Covenant” between God and America. The only Covenants God made were with Israel and are found in the pages of the Bible. Period. That’s it. That America is included in any sort of covenantal relationship with God is Mormon theology, pure and simple. I have no problem listening to Glenn and have no problem with a President who is a Mormon (at least he’s not a communist), but Glenn’s listeners need to be aware of when he swerves into Mormon theology and eschatology. He doesn’t do it often but this was most definitely a glaring example of that tendency.

I think Mormonism is leading Mormons straight to hell. I pray that Beck turns to the real Jesus of the bible and Christianity. His Jesus is the brother of Lucifer as Mormons believe and say God was a man first before He became God. You won’t find that in the Bible. It is in the book of mormon. Of course I will vote for a Mormon and being a born again Christian As most Christians I know they are voting for Romney too.

      RE: Hialtitude;
Your comment that the only covenants God made were with Israel is not factually correct. The first recorded covenant God made with mankind was when He promised never again to allow the earth to be overspread with a flood. The token of that covenant is the rainbow. The 2nd recorded covenant is the one God made with Abram (who later became Abraham when God made an additional covenant with him; see Gen 17:1ff) None of these pertain to Israel per se because Israel had not been born. The covenants God made with Abraham have a great bearing on the Church today because they are the essential embodiment of “the just shall live by faith” as opposed to the Law.
There is reference to a “new” covenant that God would make with “His people” referenced in Jeremiah 31:31-33 which is the prophetic description of how God would deal with the Church and was fulfilled (I believe) on the day of Pentecost recorded in Acts 2:1-4. You can believe it or not, your choice.
There are two ancient covenants which have no recorded origin in the Bible but they are there if you have eyes to see and ears to hear. They are the covenant of blood (aka blood brothers, etc) and the covenant of salt. Both are embodied in what we call communion.
Maybe I have said too much or have bored you but my hope is that at least one person will be blessed by all this. As for Mr Ballard‘s book I would be glad to read it as I don’t see anything that would preclude God from working in (gasp!) a mormon.

Why has so much freedom led to so many discoveries in science, and even put a man on the moon, and created man-made flight? All in little more than a century. Something really special has happened in America since our founding – something that did not happen in 5000 years of Chinese culture. If nothing good happens without God, why did so much good happen here?

It is time for humans to shed these old obsolete bodies, and assume spiritual form. That is how God planned it, and that is what is happening. That is the whole story in a nutshell. It is an Item of faith.
The U.S. does have a part in the end time scenario. We are seeing it materialize right now. This country represents the booty, and the current administration are pulling the heist. The principalities that are being birthed in the world(there are ten) will partition the world into kingdoms, and then they begin to de-populate the world. It is during this “tribulation”, that true believers are gathered unto the Lord, some churches say by Rapture, but murder will work, too. And the de-populators will be left at The Lord’s mercy, He will have little.
It is time, and it is now.
The problem with mankind’s understanding is, as individuals we each have a subjective comprehension of what is going on and why. A very small(in comparison)portion of the world’s population, is ready for the change from physical body to spiritual body, but this is how the Lord planned it, and how his children, each, individually, defeat satan. The Lord takes them out of the scene. Ready?
Jesus Christ set the example, and gave us the plan.
We are at the crossroads, now. The beast is nearly finished and the false prophet will come to install the antichrist. He will come with the word peace on his lips and murder in his heart.

A nationalist foreign policy and people living in the real world would help save this country.

INDIVIDUALISM Don’t worry the administration will NOT support Israel. Obama will, however, take credit for the a88whooping that the crazies get from Israel…after the fact. This confrontation in the middle east will come before the election and will further polarize the electorate. Obama’s numbers will tank, and it may well be that there is no election as scheduled.
The downward spiral into secular existence that this country is in, will preclude any noble effort by the U.S. We have become irrelevant,(obama is seeing to that). We are not going out with a bang, but a whimper.
This land is rich in resources. Oil, yellow cake ,coal, gold, silver, timber and water, are all in abundance. The NWO wants these resources left intact(that is why we are not drilling for oil). The people are a different story…we are a problem for them…..They need us powerless(obama is seeing to that, too). This is the biggest heist in the history of the world.
The “greening of america” is NWO code for “leave our raw resources alone”.

Its very subtle…I appreciate Patriotism but sometimes Patriotism (love for country) can blind you to the evils that lurk within. I LOVE this country and I am thankful to have been born here and not in 3rd world..but do we even know why our boys are being blown away in the middle east? Do we agree with the mandates our government is shoving down our throats (ie. abortion-LGBT-sexual perversion) and the brainwashing?
I am a citizen of this country but my 1st loyalty is to God. I know where this country came from but we’re here now and we got big problems. To some, “USA” can be an idol of sorts. I am in this world but not of it. We either believe this word or we don’t. God said if you’re lukewarm I will spew you out of my mouth.

NEOFAN: God is not a respector of persons nor is He a respector of countries. Yes God has blessed the USA and I thank Him for it. But, we are turning from God and we are stuck in our trespasses and sin. Preachers are not preaching the word today.

II Timothy 3:1-5,7 “But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of god; holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
Does this not describe the USA? Jesus came to save everyone Jesus said: “Go into ALL THE WORLD and preach the good news to all creation. Mark 16:15
We arent special because we were born in this country. If anything WE could learn something from some of these 3rd world countries. Honestly they should be sending missionaries to us!
We are selfish, blind, arrogant, indulgent, and prideful.
Read “Revolution in World Missions” by K.P. Yohannan
It will open your eyes to how sickeningly selfish Americans are. I’m not saying I have all the answers but my eyes have been opened recently to some of these things…We need to return to God. If you are not a believer you wont understand.

They are our brothers not matter how hard their hearts are right now. God is the only One who turns a heart, and it will happen. It’s a wierd dance I have to do when talking with people about the Word of God. There’s the easy stuff, because it makes good common sense, ie: Don’t steal. Then theirs the harder stuff because it conflicts with our current culture, ie: Don’t be a ****. But the hardest stuff of all is the stuff that cannot arrive at through reasoning at all. It’s stuff that God just says. Like the above verse. Yet it’s this stuff that is the scariest, because it usually involves a direct promise from the mouth of God, and dire consequence for ignoring it.

Were do the blessings of Israel begin? How did Jacob the grandson of Abraham get so lucky to have his name changed from Jacob to Israel and then have a nation called in his honor? And what is this about twelve tribes of Israel?

      KJV
Genesis chapter 12) Abraham (called Abram not Abraham yet) is promised by God that “I will make a great nation of thee” and a verse after that, (that was verse 2 by the way) God says, “and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.”

      Genesis chapter 17) Verse 3 – 7
1 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the Lord aappeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.

2 And I will make my acovenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.

3 And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying,

4 As for me, behold, my acovenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many NATIONS.

Rangerp….The old testament is a story of the Hebrews, Adam’s descendents, and the kennites, Eve’s son, Cain’s descendents. Cain was not Adams offspring, he is not mentioned in Adam’s geneology. Jesus called the kennites “tares”, offspring of satan. The two races can’t be distinguished through history, except in anecdote.
The Kennites have lived as Jews for thousands of years. Now, they spread across the world. Their agenda, for a long, long time, was to sully the bloodline that would lead to the birth of our Savior. The whole story IS the old testament. Since the birth of Christ and the inception of “the Church”, the kennite‘s mission has been to prevent the truth of our Lord’s sacrifice and victory over death, from coming forward to this time. An epic, bloody failure, to be sure…here we are. But make no mistake, they are still at it. Their current mission is to confuse the church and bring deviance and willfulness in to destroy it. Many are probably involved in high places helping with the NWO preparations.
Most of these people do not know who they are, and actually believe that what they are doing is righteous. Some will repent and be saved, most will not.
Politics cannot prevent what has been started. It will be finished. The real issue transends ALL earthly concerns..
When Christ overcame death, Satan realized we would be after him till the end of time, to deliver him to God. He is supernaturally angry with us. Keep watching.

I realize that many Mormons are some of the most “patriotic” I’ve seen in recent years and I appreciate their fervor. However, I do believe in “truth in advertising” and think that it should be noted in any promotion that these books and other materials were previously published as . . . for full understanding and so that others may make wise choices. Knowing the author, their credentials, and their purpose for writing is important to understanding the material they are presenting.

That said, thank you Glenn for all the information you do bring to us that others totally ignore. Love ya guy, but be honest with us, please!

Tim Ballard is most certainly a Mormon/LDS apologist, who has written extensively on Mormon/LDS “proof” of the Book of Mormon’s legitimacy.

I’ve been moderated all day on this thread for including links to his commentaries, other LDS apologetic works, and previous websites regarding this book that connect it to Mormon theology by Ballard himself.

This book is 100% Mormon theology, without exception.

Do your own search on “Tim Ballard mormon biography” and see what you come up with.

While you are at it, search this as well “Michael T Griffith Lincoln”, if you dare explore what the actual early LDS leaders thought of Abraham Lincoln. I’ve posted links all day – and not one post has shown up. Somehow I doubt this one will either.

The truth of history is out there, but you won’t be hearing it from either Glenn Beck or Timothy Ballard. The Agenda is Mormon/LDS theology – in all respects – at the expense of all else. Period.

This perhaps my last straw with anything Beckian. He has no real concern for our nation nor the Consitution beyond what he can co-opt into his religion. Even then, he’d throw the US under the bus to “Restore Israel” in the fashion of his doctrinaire view – in spite of the actual Jews and their own religious identity. I’m sorry his zeal is so misdirected, no matter his religious preference – liberty must be preserved first and foremost – or neither he nor I will be free to practice any religion at all.

The Church (any church) is NOT Israel! The Bible is very specific about this.

Rom 11:15 For if the casting away of them [be] the reconciling of the world, what [shall] the receiving [of them be], but life from the dead? For if the firstfruit [be] holy, the lump [is] also [holy]: and if the root [be] holy, so [are] the branches. And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree; Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee. Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in. Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear: For if God spared not the natural branches, [take heed] lest he also spare not thee. And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be graffed in: for God is able to graff them in again. For if thou wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and wert graffed contrary to nature into a good olive tree: how much more shall these, which be the natural [branches], be graffed into their own olive tree? For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. Rom 11:26 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written…

IMHO he seeks counsel with too many evangelical ministers to be content with where he is spiritually. He believes his mother commited suicide. Many of you know what the Catholic faith teaches about anyone commiting suicide and their destiny in eternity. Glenn’s mother drowned in Puget Sound and yes she was an alcoholic, and both she and the person with her drowned. Double suicide? Personally, I don’t think so. The title is symbolic. I don’t think God made an explicit covenant with the United States.

I am certain that there are inherient blessings in being obedient to his will. Both as individuals, and perhaps collectively as a nation (there is some dispute about that).

If you think of the US as a pond whose waters contain every individual in America, and God’s blessings as pebbles thrown into the pond; then even if you don’t believe that God blesses nations collectively, it’s stlll an accurate representation of how milions of individual blessings affect the entire pond.

If there are 300 million people in America and 30 million (10% are following God’s will) then that’s 30 million pebbles getting thrown into the pond which will continuously affect everyone in the pond. But as the numbers of believers who follow God’s will drops the blessings affect the whole pond less and less.

Either way, it is hard to deny how blessed we have been as a nation. And it’s hard to comprehend how terrible things will become; without the providence of God.

The only knowledge of God we have is from the Torah and the Bible. And it seems to me there are a huge big pile of stories of how God blessed or collectively cursed nations as a whole. He does always leave an out for the good souls like “leave now and don’t turn back or you will become a pillar of salt”, or quick get on this big boat the flood‘s a comin’. That’s just how he does it. Man’s intellect has no bearing on God. There’s no way to figure him out here. You see what he has said before and did before..that’s it.

I agree..but sometimes a “blessing” can be a curse unless we handle it properly. We tend to look at “blessings” as material goods and services and those are indeed blessings but it seems the more of these “things” we have the further we get from God because we don’t “have” to trust God…we have money, things, etc. and we trust in our money. We take our freedoms for granite. Such as the freedom to worship. Eighty percent of the worlds population has never owned a bible while most American households have 2-4 bibles. Now we see we have squandered our blessings and it looks like we may lose our freedom to worship if we don’t repent.
God said we cannot serve two masters. Amazing miracles are happening in Asia and other countries. It’s amazing how the power of God manifests itself when people are stripped from their “worldy” possessions.

His message is obviously biased. If you say God made a personal covenant with someone, then there is no way to decide which actions were inspired by God or by the man himself. It’s a cop-out. I understand his point: “God told Lincoln to free the slaves!” Then did God also tell Lincoln to keep allowing slavery first in an effort to keep the US intact? Did God tell Lincoln to overthrow the rights of the people and spark a war that killed 3% of the population?

God works through us and inspires us, but Tim Ballad is taking the message much too far and ignoring what doesn’t agree with his account. It’s un-Christian to claim to speak for God, which is what Tim Ballad’s rewriting of history is doing.

Of course not. There’s no evidence of any “covenants” bestowing “blessings” from God upon politicians. Inspiration? Sure. But Ballard is claiming, as per the article: “that both George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, based on the difficult times during which they lived, relied upon covenants between themselves and the Lord.”

This is false attribution that takes away from the actual history: that these men, both Christians, had faults but still accomplished great things. Implying God told them what to do, but ignoring that this means God ALSO told them to do things that failed or backfired, is blasphemy. As a Christian I appreciate the sentiment, but I‘m appalled to find someone putting words in God’s mouth.

I think it’s hard to judge these things on an individual basis. I don’t think God made a covenant with the US specifically. I think that men that loved God, and were obedient to His Will were blessed for their obedience, and these blessings also carried over into the things they touched. When these were also this nation’s leaders those blessings were truly profound in their magnitude and effect.

I think where we get into trouble is when we (humans) try to judge the individual actions and words of someone we believe to be godly and say; “Ok now, when he did this…that was from God, but this over here? Nah, that was a mistake so that’s from the devil”…etc.

At best we might be able to draw some conclusions from a historical person’s words and deeds, and see a glimmer of the actual man. We can say that this person loved the Lord, and the Lord blessed him to be the right man, at the right time. But when we try to get specific, it becomes a muddled mess.

I did think of that Lincoln thing too. However, you must agree that God uses willing people and people are just not perfect so they do things wrong sometimes.

@LOCKED… from your original post about Lincoln…if you read my statement again you will find that I agree with you on the whole G*d issue…what you missed was my point in reminding you that both political parties play with Habeus Corpus…that is what you mentioned in your post? Habeus Corpus is the thrust of your post….by the way, Old Scratch refers to the devil…in case you missed that….By the way, entire religions have been formed by men and women alike by ‘putting words in G*Ds‘ mouth’…..so that should offend you even more…anyone who claims to know the will of G*d is delusional…..that,one learns when they reach the age of reason.

      @Mark

“Habeus Corpus is the thrust of your post”

No it wasn’t… pretty at all. It was an example of things Lincoln did that directly defy what we would expect God would do “right.” The thrust of my post was that Ballard is rewriting history to make these deservedly famous figures into nigh-divine men acting through an individual promise with God. It’s sacrilegious. As you said, it seems Ballard never reached the age of reason as he presumes to speak for God.

Since this is a Mormon topic, lets quote Brigham Young – Lincoln’s contemporary Mormon.

“I do now, and always have, supported the Constitution, but I am not in league with cursed scoundrels as Abe Lincoln and his minions who have sought our destruction from the beginning.” (Journal History, 1861-1862, December 10, 1861; E. B. Long, The Saints and the Union: Utah Territory During the Civil War, Champaign, Illinois: University of Illinois Press, 1981, p. 50)

Brigham Young‘s thoughts on Lincoln’s Deity in 1861?
“Lincoln was no friend to Christ, particularly, he had never raised his voice in our favor when he was aware that we were being persecuted” (Brigham Young Office Journal, March 15, 1861)

This was in concert with Young’s opinion that Lincoln had been complicit if not active in the death of Joseph Smith. (Brigham Young Office Journal, August 13-21, 1861)

I find it utterly amazing that modern Mormons have Deified Lincoln. Period evidence by the primary witnesses of the Mormon faith – Brigham Young himself! – prove otherwise. Those are small samplings, you won’t find a kind word from Young regarding Lincoln. Neither will you find the reciprocal.

Lincoln set out to destroy Mormonism, if not for the War Between the States – he would have. John Taylor states, “If there is a cessation of open hostilities against us, it is not for want of a disposition, but owing to the peculiar situatiion”, (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 9, p. 233).
