What Does This New Study Reveal About Those Packing Heat?

Study: Holding a Gun Gives You a Bias to Think Others Are Packing Packing Heat Too

Could carrying a gun be messing with your mind? A new study from the University of Notre Dame found that if you’re holding a gun, you are more likely to think others are packing heat as well.

According to the release, the study was led by Notre Dame’s Associate Professor of Psychology James Brockmole, a specialist in human cognition and how the visual world guides behavior, with a colleague from Purdue University. The research team conducted five experiments where participants, who either held a toy gun or a neutral object, viewed images of people on a computer screen and were asked to determine if they were holding a gun or another object, such as soda bottle or cellphone:

The researchers varied the situation in each experiment — such as having the people in the images sometimes wear ski masks, changing the race of the person in the image or changing the reaction subjects were to have when they perceived the person in the image to hold a gun. Regardless of the situation the observers found themselves in, the study showed that responding with a gun biased observers to report “gun present” more than did responding with a ball. Thus, by virtue of affording the subject the opportunity to use a gun, he or she was more likely to classify objects in a scene as a gun and, as a result, to engage in threat-induced behavior, such as raising a firearm to shoot.

[...]

The researchers showed that the ability to act is a key factor in the effects by showing that simply letting observers see a nearby gun did not influence their behavior; holding and using the gun was important.

Brockmole said that this study shows that “people have a hard time separating their thoughts about what they perceive and their thoughts about how they can or should act.” Brockmole said in addition to “theoretical implications for event perception and object identification,” this research could also be considered for law enforcement and public safety implications. The infamous shooting of Amadou Diallo by plain clothes New York City police officers in 1999 comes to mind as an example. Diallo was unarmed and when approached by police at his doorstep who asked him to show his hands. Diallo reached into his pocket with his wallet in hand. In the low morning light, police identified this object as a gun and shot Diallo 19 times.

Psychology is a crack pot science in my opinion these so called psychologist can’t and refuse to set a true standard in their research. I ask how many of the subjects in the study were familiar with guns, did any of them shoot on a regular basis and did any of them have advanced training with weapons? I am sure the answer is no because that would have invalidated their hypothesis. Further study would also show that the more training someone has with a weapon and how they evaluate a situation would also affect their reactions for example lighting, and knowing what to look at i.e. face and hands. People who want to do you harm will show it in their eyes and their hands will give them away, so the only other issue would be how clearly you can see the persons eyes and hands.

Hey dude, go easy with all the logic, common sense, and smart guy talk. What are you, a scientist or something.

Actually good comments, What a stupid study. If they want to study the mentality of folks that carry a gun, why not get folks that have Conceal Carry Permit, and study them. I guess that makes to much sense. While getting my masters in education from the University of Georgia, I had to take a research methods course from a Doctor Ted Baumgardner. I do not remember much of it, but I remember enought to know that this study is a bunch of bunk. Heck, if you want to study folks that carry a firearm all the time, study cops.

Why this is so difficult for people to understand is beyond comprehension. A very old quote from a very enlightened individual says it all. “ Free societies exist where free men are armed”.. Plato
Besides that, its a basic understanding that an armed society is a polite society

If you are of the mind to carry, then you should think others are carrying. It’s the whole defense awareness mentality. No Sh-t carriers think others have guns. That’s why we carry them: To give ourselves a great advantage over preditiors, or at least an equal advantage.

      Am I missing something here?

I always thought if someone is packing a gun and thought everyone else is packing a gun they were less likely to shoot, with the exception that that other persons appears violent and your life feels threatened. I know if I was packing and I assumed most others around me were, I would avoid confrontation even more.

      RangerP,
They won‘t study people with Concealed Carry permits because they won’t get the result they wanted. Come on with the past training you have you know the proper way to do the study is:
      1. Decide on result wanted
      2. Set up study to give result wanted
      3. Desiminate the result widely, based on the “tell a lie long enough and it becomes the truth” theory

There is no doubt that psychology is a soft science, and one that is chock full of progressive-think liberals, at that. They will undoubtedly use this “study” in the future for every new gun control law they try to throw at us. Most telling to me, is how many people are already so indoctrinated against guns. How anyone can have the mindset that limiting and preventing the good guys from having guns will somehow make people safer, is utterly beyond me. A far more effective strategy to reduce crime would be to mandate that everyone be trained and carry a gun. Criminals are cowards, if they knew every potential victim was armed, they would quickly seek another profession. Of course, in a free society, I don‘t get to tell others they MUST carry a gun any more than they get to tell me I can’t.

“Psychology is a crack pot science in my opinion these so called psychologist can’t and refuse to set a true standard in their research.”

You hit the nail right on the head with that statement. Absolutely true. While the field of psychology includes some very competent people whose expertise is indeed greatly needed, there have been too many flakes, oddballs and misfits who have inundated the field in the last many years.

It’s a fact that many kooks became psychologists in an attempt to cure themselves of one kind of mental abberation or another. It is also common knowledge that homosexuals completely deluged the field for the purpose of distortorting facts about homosexuality in an attempt to gain acceptance into mainstream society. One of the results of that is the psy-ops undertaken to demonize everybody who will not accept the standard spin, such as calling people haters or homophobes for, as they say, “simply because they have a different sexual ”orientation.” That a large number of gullible people have fallen prey to the propaganda reveals how effective the ploy has been.

Another thing…… regarding these university “studies” by liberal academia……. is that it’s a known fact that these people DO NOT start out a study with the intent to find the truth except in a small number of cases. They create absurd biased studies to support a particular point of view.

This is just another step. The NRA better watch it’s push for concealed carry, the left is going to use studies like these, and incidents where kids crawling around under pews in church find loaded hand guns in ladies purses and shoot each other. Bottom line is if you aren’t carrying a grand or more in cash, you have very little reason to be carrying a concealed weapon, unless you are in an area you shouldn’t be.

It just staggers my mind how organized this coup d etat is, it’s like a game of dare between Satan & man. The Quran burning in Afghan. was a dare intended to spark evil AKA islam into a frenzy, & erupt into final Armageddon, but man holds back, then evil’s next move is the soldier who does the Afghan massacre, still no Armageddon, then the Skittles kid, evil keeps pushing and pushing! Now the hate groups are threatening to jump in with retribution. For those of us who are paying attention to Proffessor Beck, it’s like having studied a play for years, learning why certain acts were written, who and what the characters were all about, and then finally going to watch the play! As terrifying as Armageddon is, thanks to Beck, it’s fascinating to watch it as it unfolds before us!

You did a fine job here LEGION5. The ‘average’ engagement for Law Enforcement is something around 10 feet or so. Making those observations fairly easy. But law enforcement also has the ‘obligation’ to escalate use of force above that being applied against them. Citizens DO NOT. So CCW holders would do well to understand the legal ramifications as they apply to them and, as you state clearly.. practice, practice, practice. Failure here could be the last thing you ever fail at.

So… You assume that their methodology is flawed out of hand? I mean psychology is a pretty soft science but to dismiss any findings right off is pretty… stupid. You don’t have any studies that counter their findings. You don’t actually have their report so naturally you assume they did everything wrong. You have literally no evidence other than personal experience with firearms. Bring me a peer reviewed study then I‘ll say you’re right. If that’s unpalatable, well maybe you can find a place on the internet where you can find an audience who will agree with you without much requirement for evidence.

Your opinion and anecdotes do not counter scientific finding. If you wish to prove the other guy wrong, find flaws in his arguments. Do not make them up. It is nothing more than self indulgent crap.

… Sorry. That was harsh. But my point stands. Simply assuming the argument is wrong before learning anything about isn‘t going to convince anyone who doesn’t already agree. Please, be smarter in making your arguments.

Legion 5 you are dead right. We had a local news guy come by our range to do a story a few years back and they let him run a course in the shoot house. Dude shot everything that came at him (real gun = real stress). He left with a whole new respect for Law Enforcement and the tough decisions they make every day. I guarantee that study was filled with people who had absolutely no gun training. My guess is that they treated the whole thing like a game, knowing they had nothing to lose. Mistakes do happen, but they are the exception.

If this were true, CHL holders and open carriers across the nation would be in endless gunfights, since according to the article we’d think everybody had a gun and whip ours out too. Last check, we’re statistically considered the most law abiding citizens, as a group, that you’ll ever find, and most of us go our whole lives without clearing leather in a self defense situation.

Simple statistics from reality-land don’t bear out this study. Seems to me the researchers had an opinion they wished to butress with metrics before they went into the study.

The one thing I learned in college… science (particularly behavioral sciences) are simply a scientific way to explain and perpetuate stereotypes without being called a racist/sexist/bigot/homophobe.

Example: In my Sociology class, the professor argued that the stereotype about African Americans eating chicken & watermelons was borne out of the statistically verifiable fact that a plurality of blacks grow up in socioeconomically impoverished environments. That said, chicken and watermelon are much cheaper to produce (therefore, affordable at the lower end of the economic scale) because the life and planting cycles make them more likely to be plentiful with a minimum of effort.

You see what happened there? He took a racist stereotype, applied facts and figures and made an argument that it is accurate because… (blank). This is what you get out of the post-Woodrow Wilson Leftist-dominated education system.

Psychology is a faux science and the academics who practice it already have a communist agenda and a no gun bias. There is no objectivity in science anymore. The religion of science has been purchased by those who dole out the money. Fake global warming research is the tip of that corrupt iceberg. All academia has a communist playbook and anything coming from the fake science of psychology is going to find what the communist patrons want: no guns. Academics believe they are the ruling class and are working for American peasants to accept their third world status in the glorious global order. They won’t stand for an armed America any longer. Prevarication is all they do and what they do best.

“So… You assume that their methodology is flawed out of hand?”

Yes by virtue of being able to reason in coherent terms and having a pretty sound basis of information regarding psychology, but the most important data that depicts these people as frauds is the numerous studies they conduct every year that are so obviously based in biases and manipulated figures it isn’t even necessary to waste time delineating points of contention about it all, because it is so obvious to anyone with at least half a brain.

For example, they conducted a study which revealed that poor whites and Asians performed better academically and had higher I.Q.’s than wealthy blacks, and they were scratching their heads in stunned wonder as to how that could be. Why? Because their rabid liberal biases refuse to allow them to recognize the difference in intelligence between various groups because they chidishly prefer to believe that we are all the same, when we are not.

But, have no fear. They’ll get their heads tgether and come up with a pack of lies justifying their original biases and explaining away the facts as they are represented in the real world.

And how dare you allude to a lack of intelligence for anyone with opposing opinions when you and the rest of the kooky left are living in LALA land and can’t understand factual data if your lives depended on it.

I am a research scientist and have over 20 years of research experience. This study is what is commonly called “junk science”. Its original intent was to determine if people with conceal carry permits would be more likely to think someone else is carrying a gun. There appears to be no background information collected on the participants of the study. Did any of them have conceal carry permits? Did any of the participants have a pro or anti-gun bias? Had any of the participants have any form of firearms training? None of these points are addressed in this article and were likely not address in the study. This sort of research needs to be ignored and not given the press they so desperately want. This study, in my opinion, is very good example of “junk science”.

Wouldn’t you try to be on the alert for them. Wouldn’t a more realistic approach be to tell the participants. Here is a group of photos. What is each person holding? By the way. Hold put this pistol in your pocket while we ask the questions.

How about a real study that will show liberals are mentally deranged, having a superiority complex that makes them think they are smarter and superior to those who actually have IQ’s 30 or 40 points higher.

Many studies have shown that those that have concealed carry permits are among the most responsible and best temperaments of all Americans. Liberals tend to measure others by their own yardstick, and by that stick deem them unstable to have concealed carry. I agree with this, LIBERALS are mentally deranged and should not be allowed concealed carry. It’s the LIBERALS we have the problems with, like the shooter recently in Arizona that shot congresswoman Giffords. A liberal, and of course, deranged.

Yep just another reason to ban guns, hey maybe we need to ban knives too… and baseball bats… tree limbs, rocks.. in fact the true reason people get assaulted is because of human beings, should we ban people too?. What Kind of Idiot and I mean Idiot even has a brain that thinks this way! This world is filled with Educated Idiots who are predominantly from the entitlement class. No concept of reality. Double blind study?
We’re the people holding the gun accustomed to holding guns? Or, were they, ahem, “gun shy”???
“God created all men equal. Samuel Colt made them more equal.”

If the study is accurate, which I doubt, I don’t want to be the one holding the skittles while somebody else has the gun. I want the ability /option to defend myself when I see someone draw on me.

A wise man assumes EVERYONE is armed. This leads us to treat others more fairly and equally.

I agree. During my 5 years in the service, I continually heard one mind any weapon. Sure, they taught me how to use a rifle, pistol, machine gun, rocket launcher, grenade, etc. But they also taught me to think of every object as a weapon in a time of life or death. Even an innocuous object like a set of keys or a flashlight can become an extremely effective weapon when wielded with some forethought. Even just something to hold in your fist can give you an advantage. Guns are not the problem. And while I’m at it, I might as well state that the second amendment to the United States Constitution does not once mention firearms. It states “arms”. That is ANY weapon. There is no reason to justify the existence of the ATF. Alcohol is the product of a natural process that has helped mankind preserve food for literally thousands of years and tobacco is a plant. Lastly, firearms and explosives are arms and tools. The right to own arms shall not be infringed. Yet the ATF are infringing on our rights daily. I am about ready for a revolution, but not an occupy protestor, crap on the street kind of revolution. I mean a bring back liberty, end tyranny, and end feminazi/environmentalist anti-male war kind of revolution.

The fact is I am armed at all times while outside of my home and I KNOW that just about ANYTHING can be a weapon. The FBI releases photos of things people have converted to guns including, cell phone guns, knife guns, lipstick case gun, pen gun and many more. ALL are operating pistols that shoot real bullets. Also, just a few weeks ago a police officer was murdered by a man he arrested when he went to take off the handcuffs at the jail. The suspect was hiding a blade and when the officer released his wrists the suspect stabbed him in the neck.

As far as people wit CCW Permits go, they are far less apt to break laws than people that do not have CCW Permits. Even the FBI has admitted CCW Permit holders are involved in crime far less than the average citizen. Criminals are far more afraid of armed citizens than they are the Police.

Just as Americans want their children not to want when they grow up, but cater to them as children – they say and don’t do. Just as Americans say they like their privacy, even though they know they have no privacy – they say and don’t do. And many more examples couldn’t fill this page. That used to be the case on north 12th street in Moore when I was growing up and got my 72 lemans with a 400 pontiac (not a big block because pontiac didn’t have big and small blocks) that ran in the low 14′s at 100mph. But alas, the police shut down the local drag fearing that people would get “hurt” or because it upset the people who lived adjacent to the street. I don’t EVER recall anyone dying or even getting into an accident on that street and when Friday or Saturday night rolled around, that area had more business at the local restaurants and gas stations than you could shake a stick at. Now no one want to cruise because gas is so expensive and the cops will pull you over for accidentally squealing a tire. My mom got a contest of speed ticket in a 454 powered xj12 with a custom built turbo 400 that is setup to shift as hard as possible. She wasn’t even going fast, just pulled out of a gas station and when it hit second in a wet spot it went chirp. I still can‘t believe that an officer would think that a woman in her 40’s or 50′s would be drag racing while on her way to the store.

A lot of university studies are done with university students as subjects. It is easier to do the work and sometimes they make it part of the class work to record responses. This means that random sampling is violated right away. I guess I missed the part where they declare who is paying for this study. That ought to be the first sentence in the news report. It is maddening to read a report like this and the data is not exposed. What does “more likely” mean? People will fill in the blanks when data like that is missing and they will fill in the blanks with their existing prejudices. If it is a 75% chance, it has more value than if the divide is only 55-45%. We see pretty much what we expect to see. Change expectations and you change what people see. Take a person into the woods and keep mentioning bears or poison ivy. It can change their experience and behavior.

Very good point. They may be having to use psych students but it seems to me a person carrying a toy gun might well try to act like people who carry guns really do in the movies. A real gun would be a very sobering thing to have in my hands, I think. (I don’t own one but have occasionally shot one.)

There is an obvious difference between a toy gun and a real gun. But the lib profs probably didn‘t want to hamper the students brainwashing by showing them a gun by itself isn’t evil just the person holding it.

lol. I think you guys are the ones confused. Doing away with Shall Issue means you CAN CARRY without permit…as long as you pass the background check to purchase a firearm. For gods sake do a little research will ya? We all (including the Beckers) want Shall Issue to go away…thus arming more law abiding citizens.

      • States with right-to-carry laws have lower violent crime rates. On average, right-to-carry states have 22 percent lower total violent crime rates, 30 percent lower murder rates, 46 percent lower robbery rates, and 12 percent lower aggravated assault rates, compared to the rest of the country. The seven states with the lowest violent crime rates are right-to-carry states. (Data: FBI.)

ianmc002…YOU do your research, dumb a$$. a shall issue CCW means if you are legal you shall be issued a CCW. What you are talking about is not needing a permit to carry concealed if you are legal. Got it? GOOD!

There are over 20k UnConstitutional gun laws. A state has NO say (or isn’t supposed to) concerning your right to carry…it is your INALIENABLE RIGHT to carry. Do away with Shall Issue…FOLLOW the CONSTITUTION.

“Federal court decision: “A state cannot impose a license, tax or fee on a constitutionally protected right. Murdock vs. Pennsylvania 319 US 105 (1942).” For those who rely on law and commonsense, the possession of firearms is clearly “a constitutionally protected right”.”

      Shall-Issue

“A Shall-Issue jurisdiction is one that requires a permit to carry a concealed handgun, but where the granting of such permits is subject only to meeting certain criteria laid out in the law; the granting authority has no discretion in the awarding of the permits. Such laws typically state that a granting authority shall issue a permit if the criteria are met, as opposed to laws in which the authority may issue a permit at their discretion.”

I agree that a person should be allowed to carry a gun based solely upon their passing the NICS. Until that is established, however, . . . we are made to follow procedures just to keep ourselves out of prison. Sad, but that’s our current reality.

To be clear I am very anti-Shall Issue (states ‘oking’ citizens to carry guns), but I am VERY pro gun. Why? Please read my entire response.

Concealed carry is a rouse. It is your INALIENABLE RIGHT to carry. There are over 20k UnConstitutional gun laws, with the states vying to take those rights away, or grant those rights. State can NOT (or are NOT supposed to) infringe upon those INALIENABLE GOD given RIGHTS. Whether that law says you can’t/can carry doesn’t matter, it is anti Constitutional either way. Which means EVERYONE can carry. Now I do believe that the Constitution should be amended for convicted violent felons, etc, but that’s a whole nuther scussion.

      CONGRESS SHALL MAKE NO LAW!

      Hope that make sense?

How about WE THE PEOPLE COMMAND THE CLOSING of the wh and congress, nullify everything done in the past 3.6 years by this group, close all their bank accounts, demand repayment of salaries pd. each Congress person over their time under this abomination and get OUR SHOW on the road.

Are you only going to go back 3.5 years…. I vote to go back much further than that! Lets get rid of the Patriot Act, Glass Stiegal Act (?), Nip NAFTA in the bud, Regulate the EPA, Scratch the Dept of Ed, I say lets go back to about 1960 protect Kennedy and Martin Luther King, get back on the Gold Standard and never elect Nixon, Carter, Bush 1, Clinton, Bush 2 or Obama.
