What Happened During Yesterday’s Primaries? Here’s a Full Recap

On Tuesday, voters in Missouri, Michigan, Washington and Kansas chose their candidates for the House and Senate.

Before the races, Politico identified a number of issues to watch out for, including: the continued power of Palin’s endorsements, whether Detroit could soon be without “black representation,” what will happen to Rep. Thad McCotter’s seat, and the “rematch” between state Rep. Jack Hoogendy and Michigan GOP Rep. Fred Upton of Michigan.  The New York Times, meanwhile, was more focused on who the contentious democrat Claire McCaskill of Missouri will be facing in the general election.

Here’s how it all broke down.

Missouri:

In a surprising upset, voters chose Rep. Todd Akin to challenge Sen. Claire McCaskill for a prized Senate seat in Missouri, despite Sarah Palin’s heavy support of candidate Sarah Steelman.

According to the Washington Post: “If the Republican Party is to win the four seats it needs to take the Senate, it will almost certainly need to start by defeating McCaskill, who squeaked into the Senate six years ago in a Democratic wave in a state that has steadily shifted rightward since.”

As a candidate, Akin is known to be socially conservative.  He received the support of former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, and said in his Tuesday night speech: “The choice is clear in November … The big-spending, budget-busting, job-killing liberal, or the less spending, balanced budget, job-creating conservative?”

Not surprisingly, McCaskill called him “extreme.”

“The issue here is not whether you can label him a conservative, but whether or not he is on the fringe — a very extreme candidate. I believe he is,” McCaskill concluded.

Michigan:

Former U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra won Michigan’s Republican Senate nomination Tuesday, and will face incumbent Sen. Debbie Stabenow in the fall.

Tea party favorite Kerry Bentivolio– who the New York Times blog describes as a “libertarian-leaning reindeer farmer and a holiday Santa”–  won the primary for the U.S. House seat abandoned by former Rep. Thaddeus McCotter, and will face off against Democtatic nomination Syed Taj in November.

Also in Michigan, Democrat Rep. John Conyers (who said he was amazed by people who say: “read the bill” when referring to the health care law), won his primary by a wide margin.

According to The Hill, Conyers has a decent chance of winning the general election, adding: “After a GOP-drawn redistricting map scrambled Detroit’s congressional districts and stretched both into the suburbs some expected Conyers to retire. But he decided to run in the district that he’d represented more of in the past.”

The Huffington Post adds that, in addition to the challenge of redistricting, Conyers also had to overcome the fact that his wife is serving a three-year prison term after pleading guilty for conspiracy to commit bribery, and that he refused to debate his opponents.

But, they write: “His victory means that the state of Michigan will retain at least one African-American legislator in the U.S. House of Representatives.”

Washington:

In Washington, seven people were running for a seat representing the newly drawn 1st Congressional District. They were Democrats Suzan DelBene, Darcy Burner, state Sen. Steve Hobbs, Laura Ruderman and Darshan Rauniyar; Republican John Koster; and independent Larry Ishmael.

On top of that, The Seattle Times writes: “Democrat Jay Inslee and Republican Rob McKenna easily advanced to the general election in Tuesday’s primary, setting up what promises to be one of the top gubernatorial contests in the country.”

Under the state’s “top two” primary system, the top two vote-getters advance to the general election, regardless of party.

The race could draw tens of millions in spending, according to reports, and senior analyst Jessica Taylor of the Rothenberg Political Report concluded: “Washington has been fundamentally a Democratic state, but I think Republicans got the best challenger they can hope for with McKenna.”

Kansas:

Conservative Republicans who’ve been working to push GOP moderates out of state legislatures in a large section of the country scored big victories in Kansas, according to the Associated Press, where a state Senate that has been an obstacle to fiscal and social policy changes is likely to have a solid majority on the right next year.

Unlike other states, where results for conservatives have been mixed, Tuesday’s primary in Kansas saw voters in GOP races oust seven incumbent moderate senators. An eighth, Senate President Steve Morris, a moderate Hugoton Republican, trailed his conservative opponent, likely marking the end of Morris’ 20-year career as a legislator.

The targeted moderate incumbents outspent their conservative challengers, often by margins of 3-to-1 or more and received financial support from the state’s largest teachers’ union and labor groups normally aligned with Democrats. But conservatives had the backing of the Kansas Chamber of Commerce and the anti-tax, small-government group Americans for Prosperity, and the result was hundreds of thousands of dollars in spending by both candidates and political action committees.

Conservatives defeated Sens. Pete Brungardt of Salina, Bob Marshall of Fort Scott, Tim Owens of Overland Park, Roger Reitz of Manhattan, Jean Schodorf of Wichita, Ruth Teichman of Stafford and Dwayne Umbarger of Thayer. Results in Morris’ race showed him losing to state Rep. Larry Powell, a conservative Garden City Republican, who had about 52 percent of the vote.

The only conservative senator to lose a primary was Dick Kelsey of Goddard, but his opponent, Rep. Dan Kerschen of Garden Plain, is also considered conservative.

“I just want to make sure that the conservatives are there,” said Andrea McGee, a 61-year-old retired elementary school teacher from Topeka.

Bottom Line:

Though conservatives won big in Kansas, Democrats remain confident that they can beat the victorious candidates.

The New York Times wrote: “So, to recap: In a group of primaries Tuesday night, an endangered Senate incumbent [Claire McCaskill] helped pick her Republican opponent [by running ads "lamenting" how conservative he is], a spouse’s imprisonment failed to impede a landslide victory for a veteran House member in Michigan, and a reindeer farmer/Santa impersonator is now the Republican candidate for another seat in that state.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Huckabee and Michele Bachmann endorsed Todd Akin. Sarah Palin didn’t do her homework on the Missouri candidates and picked Steelman and maybe because she was being pushed by Dick Morris and others online. He is conservative and a true Christian, non-corrupt who has been smeared by opponents and even the newspaper with spin. I trust Michele Bachmann’s endorsement because she knew him. His voting record should speak for itself, being the exact opposite of Claire Mc Caskill. Apparently some news heads are still spinning his reason for winning and saying it was an upset. True, he had less money than Brunner, etc. True, he didn’t put any ads out there way in advance. But the people know him and voted for him. They supported him. Huckabee’s endorsement may have helped in the the part of the state bordering Arkansas but those around Akin trust him. They trust him more than the local newspaper and media because they are paying attention to these races now. (unlike Sarah Palin who apparently is picking people and trying to ride a wave on good picks~she doesn‘t always know best and didn’t in this case). McCaskill wants to run against Akin because he is a true conservative and on the right and she thinks Missouri is so moderate. She is in for a big surprise this go round. Missourians have had it with ObamaClaire or Air Claire. No one in Akin’s district will fault him for any earmark he brought to his district.

This is an interesting election and I sure can’t tell you how to vote except to add: put the small government/pro life candidate in. That being said, I would like to add that I pray that everyone on here spends as much time on the phones, door to door, or licking envelopes as they do on the blogs/tv. And remember some of the most important jobs are as judges, board of educations and voting no to ALL bond elections.
I sure trust Palin over Huckabee and I sure love Bachmann and Ann Coulter but they all have different opinions so as Glenn says, “do your own homework.”
We need to remind all conservatives to get out and vote on Tues. Nov. 6th and remind all progressives that they need to get out and vote on Wed. Nov. 7th.

You are correct JUJUBEEBEE! Rep. Akin is very conservative, exactly like the majority of voters in Missouri. McCaskill has been a severe disappointment. Let McCaskill know what you think, it wont matter, she will answer you that she knows better, and for your own good she will be voting with the demonRats. Steelman seemed very shaky during the debate, had trouble forming coherent answers to the questions, not at all ready for the U.S. Senate. Brunner came off as a slick willie, a used car salesman, pandering to the masses.
About the earmarks, it is my understanding that if a Rep is doing their job they should be bringing back tax dollars to their districts for projects that benefit all those who live there. The earmarks most people have problems with are turtle tunnels, bridges to nowhere, shrimp treadmills, and any that go to foreign studies/aid that do not benefit the American People directly. That money is considered a huge boondoggle, wasted to further a politician for some special interest, lobby, etc…

VITTER FOR VEEP!!!!!!!!!!!!!Are you and rubio and other senators FOR OR AGAINST ADULTERY AND BREAKING THE COMMANDMENTS? You never say a thing about vitter, admitted adulterer, whoremonger. Can we assume adultery so ordinary among pub politicians nothing needs to be said? Sen Ensign’s resignation after aduterous affair last year would seem to suggest adultery rife in the GOP. What do you say? What does romney say, rubio, ryan? Nothing. So, if you don’t speak against gay marriage, you must be for it. Huckabee is just a progressive republican, fooling a lot of idiots with his show.
I trust Palin’s a lot more than him, but people should really look more into who they are voting for instead of taking anybody’s word to be the “right vote”
She was right not to endorse Romney and he became the candidate after advertisement by the GOP lie to the people about everybody else. Now the only choice we have is to select people that will hold him accountable in Congress and the House, “IF” he wins. So far he is not doing anything to win, but sitting comfortable. thinking that everybody is going to vote for him but what he is doing is “scaring” away the voters and make them wish for a 3rd candidate . We may actually lose because of this idiot.

Palin is not always right ~at least not in state elections she knows nothing about. Michele Bachmann endorsed Akin and his voting record is the exact opposite of Claire McCaskill. He is a trustworthy candidate and a true conservative. Palin has the right conservative values but did not do her homework and made a knee jerk reaction to pick a candidate she thought had the best chance of winning, not knowing the truth about all the candidates. Akin is a solid Christian and was a grass roots candidate before the Tea Party existed. You give Palin more credit than she is due on this one.

Your view of progressive Huckabee is forgetting he was a pastor. Akin will get the support of Christians and pastors. If you look up each and every vote of his you will see the guy is voting conservative. He stands for something. People need to not read the paper or news reports and spin and go by the voting record and character.
People in his district get to voice opinions and be heard through his massive joint phone calls. He explains his reasoning behind his votes to those who ask.
His family took their children and homeschooled them. That should tell you they were aware of what was going on in the educational system years ago.
      He is trust worthy.
If you don’t like Huckabee and use that as your basis for dismissing him….you are not doing your homework either. Sarah Palin wanted to tout another momma grisley~there would be no reason on earth for her to ditch Akin. You are putting too much faith in Palin’s expertise. Michele Bachmann knew this man and knew his voting record. Palin did not.

I think Sarah Palin wanted to tout that momma grisley fame on this without really doing her homework. Huckabee is a preacher so naturally he would support Akin who is Christian to the core. I think the amendment for prayer in public places which was on the same ballot also helped Akin. Akin is not known to KC voters but well like by St. Louis county. Sarah Palin is a great gal but didn’t exactly pick the right candidate on this one. Sarah Steelman in the senate debates didn’t exactly get that this Obamacare overturn is more than an up/down vote. Todd Akin is committed to overturning every single word of what is now law. This is priority one. People who are criticizing the Missouri vote here really don’t know the whole story. Akin was solid in this and the people of Missouri have chosen the wisest pick. John Brunner was running a smear campaign and while negative ads can work the people this year are actually paying attention. The fact that Air Claire would prefer to run against Akin says alot because Claire thinks Missouri is moderate. Not this year, Claire! We want you out and Akin in! My only concern at this point is that Akin won‘t play dirty politics and won’t put out the negative ads. Come on superpacs…do your stuff because we need you to expose the real hypocrit which is Claire McCaskill!

She endorsed what she thought would give her another ring on her picks because she thought Steelman was ahead and she could tout momma grisley and picking the winner. Well she didn‘t know Missouri and didn’t know the candidates but the people voting did. Michelle Bachmann knows Akin and knows his voting record and endorsed him. So did Huckabee but I think more because of the Christian part of it, even though Huckabee is conservative he is not as conservative as Todd Akin. Sarah Palin is wanting to make a name for herself and do speaking engagements and she is jumping to pick momma grisley over a better candidate……..not sure why……either didn’t do her homework or jump onto Dick Morris.

McCaskill’s great claim to fame is being anti-earmarks. Problem is, she doesn‘t mind sending Missouri taxpayer dollars all over the country for everyone else’s earmarks, most notably the stimulus and Obamacare. Missourians have the worst of both worlds with Dirty Claire. Our tax dollars get wasted on earmarks except none of those dollars come home to us. You’re all welcome but I think it will end soon.

Let me give my opinion from a 81 year old man. Lets keep our eye on the ball lets work hard to remove Obama, keep a solid majority in the House and regain the Senate. I know there is a lot of stuff out there, birth certificate, college records, and a never ending barrage of questions about Obama. All this does at the present time is divert our attention from our task on hand. If we can win in November then we can go after all of this BS Obama has bought down on us. And you can be sure we can get some help from congress that we can’t get now. The people that are running now do not have time to divert peoples attention from the crises we are now in. Suppose you could throw Obama out tomorrow, we would end up with numb nuts for 5 months, and Hillery to run against and that would encourage a lot of Libs to come out and vote. For what its worth, that is my take on this mess we find ourselves in.

      Really?

How gullible are you? They aren’t going to undo anything. That’s not how government works. If they get the WH and both chambers let’s have a big ol bet on this issue. Deal?

      OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
      *Congressional Reform Act of 2012*

      1. No Tenure / No Pension.
      A Congressman/woman
collects a salary while in office
      and receives no pay when
      they’re out of office.

      2. Congress (past, present & future)
participates in Social Security. All funds in the
Congressional retirement fund move to the
      Social Security system immediately.
All future funds flow into the
      Social Security system, and Congress
participates with the American people. It
may not be used for any other purpose.

      3. Congress can purchase
      their own retirement plan,
      just as all Americans do.

      4. Congress will no longer
      vote themselves a pay raise.
      Congressional pay will
rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.

      5. Congress loses their
      current health care system and
      participates in the same health
care system as the American people.

      6. Congress must equally abide by all laws
they impose on the American people.

      7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen/women are void
      effective 12/31/12. The American
people did not make this contract with
      Congressmen/women.
      Congressmen/women made all
these contracts for themselves. Serving in
Congress is an honor, not a career.
      The Founding Fathers envisioned
      citizen legislators, so ours should
serve their term(s), then go home and
      back to work.

It is a concern to me that Huffington Post is more concerned with the color of a candidate’s skin than what his viewpoint is on issues. Sometimes it seems we haven’t come very far at all.

why would dems in detorit care if their rep’s wife is in jail?
I’d guess most of the people that will be voting for him have spent time in jail

Conyers is the exact representation of how bad Detroit is. They embarrass the rest of our state.

Hoekstra is such a RINO. If it was someone other than Debbie Stabusnow running against him in the general, I’d vote for his opponent.

i agree. You think anyone with any morals would be embarrassed to vote for Conyers. But that is probably the problem – no morals, nothing embarrasses the Democrat voters – yet most are offended by any mention of God or Christianity or opposition to gay marriage, abortion, etc. Choosing Conyers again says a lot about those who voted for him, and none of it is good.

      @ AngelCat

      Agree.
Some Dem/Libs seem to want to make Believers in God/Christians/Jews to DISAPPEAR
      Why?
They don‘t want to be reminded that there are consequences for life’s choices.

Christian Bible/ Jewish Torah spell out consequences.
Libs/Dems have this childish notion that if they remove something from their site,
(or when that fails) re-write reality…then they can breathe and sleep soundly…having vanquished their tormentors.
Like placing themselves in the realm of “Ignorance is Bliss” as their mantra.

It reminds me of those electronic games where you club the ground squirrels on the head as they pop out of their holes…the ‘tormentor’ may be underground for the moment but they are still there to pop up over and over.
Get used to it Libs/Dems/Atheists…Christians/Jews are here to stay…like it or not they will retain their beliefs. Just cause You don’t believe in anything but:
      – “the ends justify the means” OR
“my way or I will belittle you to death” OR
“can’t defend my point of view so I will insult you or change the subject” OR
“MINE is the ONLY point of view & you can’t have one”
…frankly is wearing thin with the rest of the world.

To me–the Bible is ultimate CHOICE.
      Either follow path or don’t.
Consequences: Lake of Fire for eternity.

I don’t have keys to Heaven & Hell– Jesus does.

In this case…IGNORANCE is NOT Bliss.
