What If Today’s Prophecy of Doomsday Rapture Turns Out to Be Right?

OAKLAND, California (AP) — Some shut themselves inside to pray for mercy as they waited for the world’s end.

Others met for tearful last lunches with their children, and prepared to leave behind homes and pets as they were swept up to heaven.

And across the globe, followers of a California preacher’s long-publicized message that Judgment Day would arrive Saturday turned to the Bible, the book they believe predicts Earth’s destruction on May 21.

The doomsday message has been sent far and wide via broadcasts and web sites by Harold Camping, an 89-year-old retired civil engineer who has built a multi-million-dollar nonprofit ministry based on his apocalyptic prediction.

After spending months traveling the country to put up Judgment Day billboards and hand out Bible tracts, Camping follower Michael Garcia planned to spend Friday evening with his family at home in Alameda, near the Christian media empire’s Oakland headquarters.

They believe it will likely start as it becomes 6 p.m. in the world’s various time zones.

“We know the end will begin in New Zealand and will follow the sun and roll on from there,” said Garcia, a 39-year-old father of six. “That’s why God raised up all the technology and the satellites so everyone can see it happen at the same time.”

The Internet was alive with reaction in the hours past 6 p.m. Saturday in New Zealand.

“Harold Camping’s 21st May Doomsday prediction fails; No earthquake in New Zealand,” read one posting on Twitter.

“If this whole end-of-the-world thingy is still going on … it’s already past 6.00 in New Zealand and the world hasn’t ended,” said another.

Camping’s radio stations, TV channels, satellite broadcasts and website are controlled from a humble building on the road to the Oakland International Airport, sandwiched between an auto shop and a palm reader. Family Radio International’s message has been broadcast in 61 languages.

Camping, however, will be awaiting Jesus Christ’s return for the second time. He said his earlier apocalyptic prediction in 1994 didn’t come true because of a mathematical error.

“I’m not embarrassed about it. It was just the fact that it was premature,” he told The Associated Press last month. But this time, he said, “there is…no possibility that it will not happen.”

Skeptics are planning Rapture-themed parties to celebrate what hosts expect will be the failure of the world to come to an end.

Bars and restaurants from Melbourne, Australia to the Florida Keys advertised bashes.

In Oakland, atheists planned a gathering at a local Masonic temple to include group discussions on “The Great Success of Past Apocalypses,” followed by dinner and music.

Camping and his followers believe the beginning of the end will come on May 21, exactly 7,000 years since the flood in the biblical story of Noah’s Ark.

Some 200 million people will be saved, Camping preaches, and those left behind will die in earthquakes, plagues, and other calamities until Earth is consumed by a fireball on October 21.

In the Philippines, a big billboard of Family Radio ministry in Manila warned of Judgment Day. Earlier this month, group members they distributed leaflets to motorists and carried placards warning of the end of the world.

Christian leaders from across the spectrum have widely dismissed the prophecy, but one local church is concerned that Camping’s followers could slip into a deep depression come Sunday.

Pastor Jacob Denys of Milpitas-based Calvary Bible Church plans to wait outside the nonprofit’s headquarters on Saturday afternoon, hoping to counsel believers who may be disillusioned if the Rapture does not occur.

“The cold, hard reality is going to hit them that they did this, and it was false and they basically emptied out everything to follow a false teacher,” he said. “We’re not all about doom and gloom. Our message is a message of salvation and of hope.”

On Friday afternoon, a small group of eccentrics, gawkers and media opportunists convened outside Family Radio’s closed office building. A sign posted on the front door said “SORRY WE MISSED YOU!”

As May 21 drew nearer, followers say donations grew, allowing Family Radio to spend millions of dollars on more than 5,000 billboards and 20 RVs plastered with the doomsday message. In 2009, the nonprofit reported in IRS filings that it received $18.3 million in donations, and had assets of more than $104 million, including $34 million in stocks or other publicly traded securities.

Marie Exley, who helped put up apocalypse-themed billboards in Israel, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq, said the money helped the nonprofit save as many souls as possible. She said she and her husband, mother and brother planned to stay glued to the television Friday night in Bozeman, Montana for news of an earthquake in New Zealand.

Camping recommended this week that followers surround themselves by their loved ones and not meet publicly, Exley said.

“It‘s an emotional time and we’re kind of nervous and scared about how things will pan out as to who will be here and who will go to heaven,” she said. “I’ll probably be scared in the fog of it, and crying, because we don’t know who is saved and who is not.”

Some people wanted to make sure their pets receive good treatment, no matter what happens.

Sharon Moss, who founded AfterTheRapturePetCare.com to provide post-apocalypse animal care, said a new wave of customers has paid $10 to sign up in the last few weeks.

“A lot of people have said you should be out there saving souls not saving pets but my heart says ‘why can’t you do both?’” said Moss, who identifies herself as Protestant.

I have been reading about this on another blog, and I’m disheartened by the viciousness of some of the comments. People seem really angry. They don’t see any problem piling on to attack Mr. Camping, Christianity and organized religion. Speaking as a Christian and as a long-time listener of Family Radio and as someone who has actually HEARD Mr. Camping’ radio Forum program, I want to vouch for his character as a good-hearted Christian. He may be misled in his beliefs regarding the Second Coming, as to knowing the particular date and time when it is to commence, but he IS within the flock of believers — an erring brother. Something I haven’t heard mentioned in any of the comments is the story of Jesus and the woman taken in adultery: “Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone…”

And you are ABSOLUTELY fee to do that. You, having heard this false prophesey, had a responsibility to bring the error to your brothers attention. If you did not do that than there is blood on your hands as well. Don’t care what you think of that, Biblically it is true. God is no respecter of persons, also Biblically correct. When humans run afoul of the word and you know about it, you have a responsibility to your brother. The love of God is obedience. The Bible is NOT a mystery.

Well I wouldn’t have anything against the man but a huge amount of his followers spent all of THEIR money promoting a false doctrine. Many sold everything that they had and gave the proceeds to his church. Will he return the money? probably no. Will Christians sue him. Probably. All that his false doctrine did was again show the secular world that Christians are “crazy”. We Christians should..as I stated earlier, do our due diligence with studying the Bible in the original languages and then carefully and humbly approach God for answers. Satan is the author of confusion and we need not to help him along and follow false doctrine whether it’s the Pre, Mid or Post-Trib doctrines or setting dates on Christ’s return. The real rapture or “episunago” (upward gathering) happens at the opening of the 6th seal…whenever that event happens. God’s Wrath begins after the 7th seal. Crystal clear in the Greek and muddled up by false teachers with an agenda in the English translations.

The guy is a fraud.Any one who lacks humility in spiritual matters is a fraud. If he won’t entertain the possibility that he might be wrong then he is a fraud. He’s about power ,the power to manipulate people and get people to think about what he wants them to think about .Even Thomas the apostle had doubts as did Jesius himself when he cried out that he was abandoned. To say nothing about the fact that the end of the world is not our business-the book of Revelation is there so we know that there will be an end to this human condition and Jesus will return. That is it’s assurance but it is not for us to play prophet.Jesus is the fullfilment of prophesy and our job is to conform our will to His.Any “spiritualiss”-the attempt to decipher hidden messages from God- is demonic [though he may be ignoraant of that]And trying to bring on the second comiong of Jesus [manipulate God?]-by unjustly siding with racist Israeli expansionism or any other unethical policy is also wrong. We’re called to be just..

The rapture, Day of the Lord and the return of Jesus all hapen after the breaking of the 6th seal. There has been a huge amount of false teaching and confusion within the last 150+ years with the “Pre-Trib”, Mid-Trib, Post Trib, NO Trib…etc that the Church is truly unprepared for what is to truly unfold in the Last Days. I highly suggest that everyone stop falling back on the false teachers and do your own due diligence. The most popular, the Pre-Tribulation Rapture is a false teaching just like the teaching of this knucklehead predicting the end today. Sound rendering of the original Greek and Hebrew texts and turning off TBN is a great start. The coming of Jesus, the rapture and the Day of the Lord all begin after the breaking of the 6th seal with the 7th seal being the beginning of the Day of the Lord. I suggest that anyone who does not agree go back and study all of the Day of the Lord passages and compare it with the 6th seal events. Satan has infiltrated the Church and knows full well that an unprepared Church can and will fall for the Powerful Delusion when the rapture does not happen at the first seal as is taught by the likes of Hal Linsey, Tim LaHaye, TBN, John Haggie and others. I challenge anyone to prove that there are 2 Days of the Lord, 3 returns of Jesus Christ and that the rapture happens prior to the antichrist revealing himself after the rapture. You will not find it anywhere in Scripture unless you use a wild and vivid imagination and assumption.

      Dead right GUNWACKO!!
though I love those pastors and teachers, It pains me to know they have a major hand in the great Apostasy (or falling away).
Matt 24:9-11 9) “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. 10) At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11) and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.

The pretrib teaching never sat well with me, if for no other reason, then theres absolutely no other example in the bible of someone getting “get out of jail” card. “Catch the pre trib rapture and get to skip past the trib”?! Im sure Job would have loved that option. None of the apostles got to skip over their persecution times, nor anyone else in history for that matter.

When the “church” truly does start to be persecuted and hunted down, many will simply turn away realizing the lie, of waiting for a rapture that doesn’t come prior to Christians actually being put through the testing fire, taught by so many teachers.

But we have this one hope:
Matt 24:22 22 “If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened.

Not only is Rapture a man-made idea, it‘s an idea that didn’t even occur to Christians until some time in the 19th century. End-of-the-world delusions go way back, but not the notion of little piles of clothing lying around because the bodies in them have been taken up, or vehicles left driverless careening all over the roads.

gita: You are correct. There will be no rapture, ever. It is a lie that the Church continues to preach. We are here until the last trumpet sounds. The Doctor Luke, in Acts 3: 19 – 23 gives us an indication of when Jesus Christ will return. He tells us: Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, and that he may send the Christ, who has been appointed for you – even Jesus. He must remain in heaven UNTIL the time comes for GOD TO RESTORE EVERYTHING, as he promised long ago THROUGH HIS HOLY PROPHETS. For Moses said, The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you must listen to everything he tells you. Anyone who does not listen to him will be completely cut off from among his people.
What we learn here is that JESUS CHRIST cannot return UNTIL God restores everything. And…What is He going to restore…Ezekiel 37 tells us that He is going to RESTORE THE WHOLE HOUSE OF ISRAEL…that’s all 12 tribes of Israel, and that has not happened yet. So Jesus Christ will not come today, because the 12 tribes of Israel have not been reunited and restored to this date.
Plain and simple. And…we have yet to build the Temple of God on the Mount in Jerusalem, according to Ezekiel at the end of his book, and that surely has not taken place yet. So much more prophecy yet to be fulfilled before Jesus Christ comes again. We do not know the day or the hour.

    BEST POEM IN THE WORLD
    I was shocked, confused, bewildered
    As I entered Heaven’s door,
Not by the beauty of it all,
Nor the lights or its decor.
But it was the folks in Heaven
Who made me sputter and gasp–
The thieves, the liars, the sinners,
    The alcoholics and the trash.
There stood the kid from seventh grade
Who swiped my lunch money twice.
Next to him was my old neighbor
    Who never said anything nice.
    Bob, who I always thought
    Was rotting away in hell,
Was sitting pretty on cloud nine,
    Looking incredibly well.
I nudged Jesus, ‘What’s the deal?
I would love to hear Your take.
How’d all these sinners get up here?
    God must’ve made a mistake.
‘And why is everyone so quiet,
So somber – give me a clue.’
    ‘Hush, child,’ He said,
    ‘they’re all in shock.
No one thought they’d be seeing you.’
    JUDGE NOT!!
Remember…Just going to church doesn’t make you a
Christian any more than standing in your garage makes you a car.
    Every saint has a PAST…
    Every sinner has a FUTURE!

If the ‘rapture’ ocurrs today, there are going to be a tremendous number of shocked and crying people. If it doesn’t, there are going to be a lot of shocked people, and only a few crying.

Was waiting with some of these people watching for news to come from New Zealand of the big day events; one even had his ‘ascention robes’ at the ready for Christ coming home…needless to say I told them that it would not happen, showed them the scriptures out of the good book, and just said nothing more when the big let down happened.

Some though, on a positive note, are actually searching the scriptures to find out what went wrong with the prediction, and to see the true words for themselves.

May God lead them into the light and truth in their hearts.

True, if there is not a solid foundation of some belief to stand upon, then the tides of change will sweep you away and turn you in every direction possible. You will only strive to ‘go along, to get along’ and do what is expedient instead of what is right.

Here is a taste of reality:
The mortality rate of the world is .883 percent.
That means 1 out of 113 people died last year.
      The RATE is:
      2 people per second Die
      107 deaths per minute
      6,390 deaths per hour
      153,000 deaths per day
      56 MILLION deaths per Year

If you live to be 70 you will have outlived 3.9 BILLION others.

      So, What’s more important:
That you know when the end of the world is
      or
that you will end in the world ?

as surely as you breathe, you will die SOMEday.
It ain’t rapture, it ain’t fear-mongering, it is a fact.
If you keep your eyes on the prize, doomsday doesn’t matter.
It is just idle/idol gossip and fools’ speculation.

Oh, gracious, I hate it when I put myself into these things… but….
The Bible is not fiction; it is the inherent word of God.
People like Camping can take it, distort it, and use it for their own personal gain. I give him no credibility, for it says in Matthew 24:36 that no man can know when the return of Christ will occur, “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.”
I take my direction in life from the Bible and God, so if that qualifies me as a bozo, then I will proudly accept the title. I hope and pray that one day you will realize your misconception and turn to Christ.

Interesting that this worldwide ridicule of legitimate eschatology, spurned by a blatant false prophet and his cult-like movement, happened amidst all of the truly significant events that are unfolding around the world, especially involving Israel and her enemies. There is profound evidence to suggest that we are on the close to seeing the fulfillment of Ezekiel 38-39 as the UN seems likely to recognize a Palestinian state in September. Obama mentioned a “mandate for action” in his speech regarding our involvement with Libya. Was this not the “Responsibility to Protect” to which he was referring, and will we not have the same mandate to realize Samantha Power’s vision of a “mammoth protection force” in “Palestine”? Perhaps Glenn‘s suggestion that our military’s compounding presence in the Middle East is not a trap, but something more insidious. Perhaps Obama intends to concentrate our military in the region to facilitate an invasion of Israel in accordance with prophecy. Please check out my article on this subject: http://midnightwatch.typepad.com/midnight-watch/2011/05/pre-trib-treaty-or-mid-trib-invasion-part-1.html.

Mr Camping, a “bible scholar”, seems to have missed what most first year bible college students learn in eschatology class: that before any of the end times stuff happens, the Jewish temple must first be rebuilt where it once stood, which means the Dome of the Rock must come down. No one knows the day or the hour of the Lord’s return except for the Father. Not even Jesus knows. But there are signs that the end is near, and while we’re seeing some of them, we won’t see it until all of them come to pass. I’d like to feel sorry for the poor schmucks taken in by Mr Camping, but if they can‘t be bothered to crack a bible and see if what he’s teaching is true before cashing in their life savings to buy billboards and such, well…Pt Barnum, etc.

Such a shame. All you had to do was read the Bible to know that ANYONE claiming to know the day or the hour of Christ’s return is a liar. The word of God could not be any clearer on the issue. The Bible will lead you to a good life and keep you from being deceived. But……ya gotta read it. It appears to me that you CHOSE to listen to a man (and his followers) instead of listening to the words of the Bible itself. For that I don’t think anyone who chose this path deserves a dime. FREEDOM to choose what you believe is great!!! I’ve believed a lot of crap in my life. Some of which cost me a lot of money. But I don’t sue the people who screwed me if it was of my own choice to believe it. Nobody forced me into bad decisions. So take the responsibility, learn from it, and be a better person because of the spanking you took from this liar. A lawsuit cannot cure lack of wisdom. But reading the Bible on your own will help you to discern truth from a lie. Best of Luck

      @Blacktooth,

      (continued from prior post)

1938 As far back as 1880 The Watchtower pointed to A.D. 1914 as the date marking the end of the world, at which time great trouble would come upon the nations; but at that time it was not seen by God‘s people on earth that the trouble would be the battle of Jehovah against Satan’s organization. For many years it was believed by them, and so stated in The Watchtower, that “the time of trouble” would be a terrific clash between the various elements of the earth, such as capital and labor. Not until 1925 was “the time of trouble” Scripturally understood.” (Watchtower, p. 35, Feb 1, 1938)

      Oops!

I am still here. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? I get so confused. I haven’t seen my neighbors after the sun went down however. Maybe they went? I think I should call and wake them up to see if they are OK (still around)?

      @Blacktooth,

“And where in your posted information is there a statement of a definite month/day date?”

      Doesn’t matter – 1914 has passed.

Again, as usual, the prognosticators of Jesus’ return are proven wrong. With a batting average of 0%, why does anyone even get press for this anymore? Jesus will come to Earth, when God sends Him and not before, and unlike most people, God can keep a secret!

      2 PETER 3:2-9

2 … be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior,

3 knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts,

4 and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.”

5 For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water,

6 by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water.

7 But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

8 But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

      MATTHEW 24:23-27

23 “Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There!’ do not believe it.

24 For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.

25 See, I have told you beforehand.

26 Therefore if they say to you, ‘Look, He is in the desert!’ do not go out; or ‘Look, He is in the inner rooms!’ do not believe it.

27 For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.”

Had a trip planned during this time, drove all day Sat. 21st. and as I predicted, nothing happened except I was tired after 13 hours of driving. Didn‘t expect to be whisked up to heaven on this man’s word, as I believe what the Bible tells me, we will not know the time but to look for the signs He has given to be in the ballpark. And the prophesy that “many will come in my name,” and they have and will keep coming.
Hear the Word, not the false prophets.
