What Sort of Monster Is Swimming Beneath the Frigid Waters of This Icelandic Lake?

Since 1345, a mysterious aquatic creature dubbed the Lagarfljót worm — or the Iceland worm monster — has been showing up unexpectedly in Lagarfljót Lake near Egilsstaðir. The Huffington Post reports that, according to lore, it is considered a bad omen when the worm appears.

Rare footage of what appears to be a giant serpent swimming through the icy water emerged earlier this month. See for yourself:

Iceland News has more on the local legend:

The story goes that the worm was once just a little heath worm which was put onto a golden ring, as that was rumoured to make the gold grow. When the owner of the ring came back later, she discovered with shock that the worm had grown enourmous, but the ring was still the same size as before. In frustration she threw both the worm and the ring into the lake, where the worm continued to grow bigger still.

Here's a blurry screenshot of what would be the "head".

Like those coming up with rational answers for the eerie photographs capturing the outline of the Loch Ness Monster, there are skeptics for this video footage as well. Some have said the worm is really just a frozen fishing net floating through the ice.

What do you make of it?

Have you never heard of arctic sharks, polar bears, seals, penguins, beluga whaltes, narwhales, walruses, etc.? Not sayin this isn’t a hoax, but you gotta use some logic on debunking it; a lot of animals live in arctic waters, just watch Discovery channel sometime and see the king crabs being caught from the ocean floor in the Bering Sea. With a long time to evolve, depending on your view of creation/evolution, surely there are things living in that lake year-round. Heard of ice fishing? :)

You obviously took enough note of it to click on the article and then waste even more time by posting a comment. As with everything in life, what you don’t want to read or find uninteresting, don’t read it. The title of the article doesn‘t imply that it’s a “tabloid-esque” type of story. Another thing to remember is that tabloids and gossip rags are read by millions of “interested” readers a year. The difference is that if I pick up a tabloid, I know it’s a tabloid. When I read the Blaze, I want investigative journalism and no “bovine feces/opinion” filled news.

The Icelandics are extremely superstitious, to a point that it shocks those not from Iceland. A large majority there still actually “for real” believe in things like elves, trolls, etc. They’ve carried their ancient Norse heritage with them untouched by modernity for almost a thousand years. Gotta disagree w/ you on that Bonnie. If it was floating on a current it wouldn’t be making those undulating movements that are characteristic of a swimming snake or crocodile tail. That takes muscle and bone attached to that muscle to produce that. It is slow moving but it‘s in freezing water and that isn’t conducive to moving quickly. If you watch the video closely on the close ups of the “head” you can see it is going against the current so it is definitely not floating debris.

No I thought the same before I looked at it.Its actually going against the current horizontally. Its cutting across it.There seem to be pockets to the fjord in this lake.Ribbon fish/oar fish could very well inhabit the fjord. If they came into the lake the surfacing may be them dieing.Might actually be an adaptation into fresh water and bouancy levels.

Actually, the movie was quite entertaining. Good looking actresses, European modesty standards, a kickin’ theme song, and relatively faithful to the book of the same title by Bram Stoker. The book, like the subject of this posted story, was based upon a medieval legend. Just as Stoker based “Dracula” on the Romanian vampire legends (themselves based in part on the real life King Vlad Tepes), “Lair of the White Worm” was based on the Lambton Worm legend of the River Wear in Durhamshire, England. Not to be confused with the “Liar of the White Worm,” William Jefferson Clinton.
