What Turned Filmmaker David Mamet From ‘Brain Dead Liberal’ to Conservative?

David Mamet Appears on GBTV, Tells Andrew Wilkow About Conversion From Liberalism to Conservatism and His Book The Secret KnowledgeAppearing on The Glenn Beck Program Wednesday evening, award-winning author, producer and director David Mamet discussed his latest book, “The Secret Knowledge” with guest host Andrew Wilkow. The work chronicles Mamet‘s transition from liberal to conservative and explains the reasons for the famed writer’s awakening.

Mamet solidified his place in American film and theater with such works as Glengarry Glen Ross, The Verdict, Wag the Dog, and The Untouchables and had frequently included typical liberal themes throughout his screenplays — that is until he made the conversion.

In a now-infamous op-ed for The Village Voice in 2008, “Why I am no Longer a Brain Dead Liberal,’” Mamet revealed that essentially, he had been living a lie for most of his life, as the liberal beliefs he held fast to in his mind were not actually reflected in his day-to-day words and deeds. He wrote that after being prompted by his rabbi to engage in dialogue with those who sit on the opposite side of the ideological aisle, he recognized that he held two opposite views of America: One of a state “where everything was magically wrong and must be immediately corrected at any cost; and the other—the world in which I actually functioned day to day—was made up of people, most of whom were reasonably trying to maximize their comfort by getting along with each other (in the workplace, the marketplace, the jury room, on the freeway, even at the school-board meeting).” After this revelation, Mamet realized that the time had come to acknowledge he was in fact part of  the latter version of America.

After reading the works of economists Thomas Sowell, who he called “our greatest contemporary philosopher,” and Milton Friedman among others, Mamet found that he “agreed with them.”

“…a free-market understanding of the world meshes more perfectly with my experience than that idealistic vision I called liberalism.”

In The Secret Knowledge, Mamet writes that when faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges, people can succumb to a belief in the power of the state and those who dub themselves “experts,” as means of rectifying the nation’s ills. What results, according to the Pulitzer Prize-winner, is a contingent besieged by Stockholm Syndrome.

He adds that the“essence of Leftist thought” is a “devolution from reason to ‘belief,’ in an effort to stave off a feeling of powerlessness.”

The Wall Street Journal’s Bari Weiss summed up the central theme‘s of Mamet’s “Knowledge” in the following way:

College is nothing more than “Socialist Camp.” Liberalism is like roulette addiction. Toyota’s Prius, he tells me, is an “anti-chick magnet“ and ”ugly as a dogcatcher’s butt.” Hollywood liberals—his former crowd—once embraced Communism “because they hadn’t invented Pilates yet.” Oh, and good radio isn’t NPR (“National Palestinian Radio”) but Dennis Prager, Michael Medved and Hugh Hewitt.

During Wednesday’s program, Mamet told Wilkow that celebrities notorious for their liberalism, like Jane Fonda, use their activism as a means to merely feel good about themselves. “They gave themselves an award,” he quipped.

He also considers the Obama administration an “incipient totalitarian movement,” and decried the fact that those who criticize the president are labeled racist, anti- feminist, anti-Muslim or other pejorative.

In terms of the Occupy movement, Mamet said they are mostly “good meaning idiots” but that their more sinister element — like the ones who plot to blow up bridges — are no different than the Nazi Brown Coats who perpetrated Kristallnacht — or, the “night of broken glass.”

As the conversation veered to education, Mamet had few kind words for liberal arts colleges and universities. As someone who has actually taught at some of the nation’s most prestigious Ivy Leagues, Mamet said what can be found there is nothing but liberal indoctrination, anti-Semitism and “unpatriotic filth.”

When asked what prompted the conversion, Mamet explained that upon examining the moral principles by which he lived, he started to investigate conservatism and is now trying to impart that wisdom to younger generations, including his daughter.

Noting that the press are “sycophants” that cannot be trusted to report the facts, Mamet cautioned the only ones who can be trusted are private citizens. .

“We have to judge according to the standards of the constitution,” he said, because “the country is going down the drain.”

I spent most of my life thinking I was a liberal….grew up in a Democrat family. I am convinced if my parents were alive today, they would no longer be Democrats. They gave me my base morals. Pull your own weight, help others, adhere to the Constitution, show respect. It really only takes the golden rule and the 10 Commandments to steer one right.

So now David keep helping get the word out. I just hope it is not too late. It will take the first term of anyone to even get the steering of this great country to keep it from going over a cliff. If Obama gets in, it will be gone. We are in for some tough times. We do need some conservative news organizations that will tell the truth about what is going on, but more than that we need congressmen who will stand up and help save this country. Get Holder and Obam out or this nation will be up for grabs by the hoards who are on an influx into this nation.

The LEFTISTS consider ‘compromise’ as doing it THEIR way, or NO WAY!
I’m glad that Mr. Mamet was finally able to have an ORIGINAL THOUGHT, which lead to more thinking, and then, as he pulled out of the utopian fog that seems to envelope Holly-WEIRD, San FAGsicso, and too many enclaves across the Nation, he was able to FINALLY see reality for what it is!
There might be HOPE, yet, that this Nation can CHANGE in the RIGHT direction!
Funny how only the Conservatives are able to think for themselves, while the LIB-TARDS only parrot what their leaders tell them to say and think?

Actually they are not alike at all. Now given that everything up to this point you’ve said has given me no reason to think that you EVER actually knew or read any Leftist philosohpy, I‘m not surprised you wouldn’t know this, but in anarchist philosohy, there is a VERY CLEAR DISTINCTION between violence against PROPERTY and violence against PEOPLE. Now, you may not AGREE with either tatic–that’s not the point. The POINT is that the tactics, and their motivations are DIFFERENT, and you CONLFATE the two as though they are the same. The foiled “bomb plot” (I assume you mean Ohio) WAS foiled, because they spent so long forming an elaborate plan to get people of the bridge BEFORE blowing it up, that word eventually got out before they could execute their plan (surprise, surprise). NAZIS, on the other hand, made MASS MURDER their EXPLICIT GOAL–one of these things is not like the other…

Again, you don’t have to APPROVE or AGREE with either tactic, BUT if you pretend their the same, you are simply factually incorrect at best, or malicious disingenous at worst–please reserve analogies to UNABASHED MASS MURDERERS for UNABASHED MASS MURDERERS.

If a society provided no organized protection against force, it would compel every citizen to go about armed, to turn his home into a fortress, to shoot any strangers approaching his door—or to join a protective gang of citizens who would fight other gangs, formed for the same purpose, and thus bring about the degeneration of that society into the chaos of gang-rule, i.e., rule by brute force, into perpetual tribal warfare of prehistorical savages.

The use of physical force—even its retaliatory use—cannot be left at the discretion of individual citizens. Peaceful coexistence is impossible if a man has to live under the constant threat of force to be unleashed against him by any of his neighbors at any moment. Whether his neighbors’ intentions are good or bad, whether their judgment is rational or irrational, whether they are motivated by a sense of justice or by ignorance or by prejudice or by malice—the use of force against one man cannot be left to the arbitrary decision of another.

This is where YOU don’t get it. There is no difference between violence against property or people. OBJECTIVETRUTH is correct in that the Nazi movement began with the destruction of property and moved on to bigger, more violent aims and pursuits. I submit to you, in many cases, anarchist idiots destroy personal property, which is purely an extension of someone’s blood sweat and tears. Their hard earned efforts in life to succeed and provide for their families. Corporations can replace lost property, but it‘s not so easy when these idiots destroy someone’s dream. In essence, you ARE creating violence agains the individual, the individuals that work for that company and now possibly out of a job, as well as all the families involved. Violence is violence. The fact that you or any other anarchist can justify it for the purpose of an idiotic agenda is simply foolish. And that’s putting it nicely.

Here in Chicago, we’re getting ready to host the NATO Summit. I can’t stand Rahm, but I‘m hoping he has the stones to bring out some old fashioned ’68 Convention, police whoop-ass if the situation degenerates to what happens in previous cities. If these idiots get out of line, it’s time to crack some skulls and fill some cells.

      @ OBJECTIVETRUTH

I appreciate your response to that post, I feel you have offered a counter-position that indicates the left’s ways are not set in stone. They appear to evolve, and can at any time take any form.

I get out of this, that the left, communist, & socialist ways don’t actually have absolutes, but rather there are some who feel they have the absolutes, and others who feel there are different absolutes.
Therefore, it appears socialism is subjective; it depends on the person who wants a thing, and how passionately they want it. For some, the end justifies the means, and for others, the end justifies “most” means…. etc.

Jesus Christ deals in absolutes. He absolutely hates my sinful life, but he absolutely has paid for my sins because he absolutely loves justice. He absolutely loves justice so much that he needed to die to pay the eternal price, so that his absolute love for me presents me clean and pure before God the Father.

Within our supposed first world, civilized society there are dangers beyond the control of those the positions of protection. In our society if someone wishes you harm they can easily perpetrate that harm. This is no different than tribal cultures.

What is the solution. Would you have people harmed in some twisted, simple-minded idea that to defend themselves is less civilized? All the while the system becomes more overwhelmed.

High mindedly, in a perfect world disputes should be arbitrated in some way. Maybe. I question any government intervention, though …….. especially at the individual citizen level. Freedom is usually diminished as a result.

Not specifically property, or persons per say, just CHANGE! As Barry so profusely spewed to get elected! Now that the CHANGE he dreamed is taking hold, even the dumbfounded, are taking aback to it! Its NOT what they thought he meant! I know PLENTY of people who profoundly announced their voting for Obama in 2008, who now just as emphatically say they wont! And the beauty of it is Barry, and his faithful morons, are seeing a GREAT CHANGE( if I can spin the pun) in his former followers to the other side! What a simplistic view you have on life and property. Of course life is more important than property, but you can‘t tell me that the loss of property can’t harm a person’s life.
So, you blow up a bridge – and you make sure no one is on the bridge so no lives are lost. However, by blowing up that bridge you make it impossible for a family to get to their store and open it up for business – so that family loses a week of work – and that was the difference of them surviving and keeping their store open and keeping their home paid for.
Oh, no big deal to you – that family just lost every single thing in their life.
Anyone who tries to harm me personally, or take my property from me in any way, is a criminal and no better than the Nazi brown coats. The liberal agenda has caused me to lose half my investments, and I’m 60 years old – I’m supposed to be able to retire in 5 years, however, I’ll have to work full time for the next 10 years, and probably have to keep my second job for the next 5 years.
Have a little empathy – you just think about what you’d do if you lost everything. I don’t know your age, but you think about if you were 60 and 70 and lost everything. Tell me then how you’d feel about those boys who wanted to only blow up a bridge.

You completely missed Mamet’s point. He was comparing the toleration of illegal actions by societal powers during Kristallnacht to the similar unprincipled appeasement of “Occupy” law-breakers in order to advance the notion that, when basic values like justice are not enforced, it only emboldens the totalitarian reflex.

Liberalism is not a political philosophy. It is the absence of a cogent political philosophy and a set of core values. Core values and liberalism cannot co-exist. To be liberal you must be willing to change a position instantly and embrace the new doctrine without thought or question.

Synopsis of FA Hayek’s book “Road to Serfdom” Part 2:

Hayek argued that countries such as the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany had already gone down the “road to serfdom”, and that various democratic nations are being led down the same road. In The Road to Serfdom he wrote: “The principle that the end justifies the means is in individualist ethics regarded as the denial of all morals. In collectivist ethics it becomes necessarily the supreme rule.”

I particularly liked where he said (Paraphrased) that all socialists turn into fascists when they realize the only way for people to come around to their way of thinking/doing things is to force them. Kind of like making every one drive a Prius. Have all you electric/hybrid drivers taken into consideration that these cars run on COAL and our President is dedicated to bankrupting the coal industry? He should have read FA Hayek’s “The Road to Serfdom”. Here’s a synopsis of the book (it’s all you really need!):

Part 1: For Hayek “the road to serfdom” inadvertently set upon by central planning, with its dismantling of the free market system, ends in the destruction of all individual economic and personal freedom. Hayek’s central thesis is that all forms of collectivism tend towards tyranny, and he used the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany as examples of countries which had gone down “the road to serfdom” and reached tyranny. Hayek first argued that democratic legislatures move too slowly to manage a modern industrial economy. Management of socialism would therefore lead to bureaucrats gaining discretionary powers. Disagreement about the practical implementation of any economic plan would invariably necessitate coercion in order for anything to be achieved. Hayek further argued that the failure of central planning would be perceived by the public as an absence of sufficient power by the state to implement an otherwise good idea. Such a perception would lead the public to vote more power to the state, and would assist the rise to power of a “strong man” perceived to be capable of “getting the job done”. After these developments Hayek argued that the worst get on top of socialist bureaucracies. Those who are good at acquiring and exercising discretionary powers in government are usually the most ruthless and corrupt individuals.

I truly hope that people that desire Government intervention on the basis of Marxist beliefs could see the paradox in their desire…

The proletariat (lower social class) and bourgeoisie (upper class) struggle under socialist standards create that paradox…

The paradox is ultimately created by replacing the bourgeoisie with a government entity and eliminating the possibility of the proletariat from truly achieving his/her desire in life…

… and once entrenched, the bureaucrats regard the law as a tool to control the populace and when they disregard the results of free elections (example, anyone?) they eventually end up perforated on the pointy ends of peasants’ pitchforks.

Why do you think King Hussein keeps complaining about Congress? There’s no budget, there’s no plan to get us back on track, why he says? Because the Conservatives won’t compromise he says. Why? Because we have learned that compromise only gives the progressive socialist more of what they want and in return we get promises that are never kept from the progressives, such as less spending.
King Hussein continues to go around Congress in an attempt to show that he can make things better with his policies, all have failed miserably so far, but he continues to plee for more autonomy and blames the failures on the lack of the Congress to act quickly enough.
He is attempting to coax the American people into giving him more executive authority, which will be our downfall. This is why he told the Russian Prime Minister he would be more able to make the aggressive moves after the election, he will take the approval of the people to mean that he can do whatever he sees fit to do in order to make changes to improve what congress is to slow to do and what the Constitution doesn’t cover under his and his czars interpretation. He has already begun to do this now and will only become more bold when re elected in November.

“And I realized that the time had come for me to avow my participation in that America in which I chose to live, and that that country was not a schoolroom teaching values, but a marketplace.”

Exactly!! Yes, why should ‘government’ be anything more than just government …. just boring out of space ‘government’! You go to McDonals, you don‘t expect ’social justice’, just a damn cheeseburger. Whereas, in government we can’t smoke, we can’t use salt, they bring up two boys being married, I need to give half or more of what I work for to some bum down the street and goes on and on and on. Government should be ‘boring’, period! My state doesn’t need a federal education department any bigger than a hundred people – tops …. etc. etc., end of all this big fancy capital buildings with these guys in suits spending my money like drunk sailors! They should meet in grade school gym, serve (s e r v e) four years and go get a job for 8 more before returning.

I remember the old days too. They actually did meet in the local school. When I say old days it actually wasn’t that long ago here.20 to 30 years tops. They actually got something done and turned out students who could think and achieve. Its sad I’ve been out of secondary school for decades and without studying got higher much higher scores on my entrance tests than those freshly out of high school.I carried a 4.0 frade average first complete semester.I had closed book tests and exams just like in the old days. Why didn’t I return?Besides being considered a leech due to the fact I used a pell grant.I was actually actively forced out.My situation is different than most,It involves multiple crimes commited against me.

My sister forwarded me a link to “Why I Am No Longer A Brain-Dead Liberal” last year, and when I got to this comment, I guffawed out loud and knew David and I were meant to be life-long friends:

“[B]ut any of us who has ever been at a zoning meeting with our property at stake is aware of the urge to cut through all the pernicious bull**t and go straight to firearms.”

And as a graduate of the BYU American Studies program, I loved this quote, too:

“For the Constitution, rather than suggesting that all behave in a godlike manner, recognizes that, to the contrary, people are swine and will take any opportunity to subvert any agreement in order to pursue what they consider to be their proper interests.”

    I think I have a wee bit of a crush….

I’ve been trying to understand this for (only) three years. Wish he could tell the story of how the democrats were hijacked because we need two parties but both front and center behind the constitution. Imagine that, competing together behind the constitution. Both sides are not perfect but one side is so brain-dead, it’s scary. My church is not government, all social programs moved to the WMCA, Salvation Army and to church organizations – they would do a much better job and much cheaper and a flat tax — woowee. But communism has found it’s way into our government.

The founding fathers were no happy with separate political parties, for just that reason. Both should be supporting the Constitution. This division in political parties has led to the division of this country. We are now on the verge of creating another party out of the Republican party, very much in the same as the Libertarians came out of the Democratic Party. The Conservatives are on the verge of moving away from those economic fascists in the Republican party and getting back to conservative politics in the social arena and continue to support free market capitalism. Where as the economic fascists continue to look for the government to control such intities as energy and taxes in order to make more money and have more control of the free market, by not allowing it to be a true free market. Example: For the last 52 weeks, oil consumption in the US has trended in a downward cycle. Fuel cost on the other hand have been kept artificially inflated and on the rise by the use of speculators who would determine the availability of fuel. This contrary to King Hussein’s belief keeps the rest of the free market from growing, because the cost of growth goes hand in hand with fuel cost. The other item King Hussein continues to harp on is making those who make more pay more taxes. To the super wealthy this isn’t a big deal, but to entrepeneurs and small businesses that employ over 50 percent of the private sector jobs it keeps them apprehensive about expanding.

I’ll support him from now on!
It‘s so nice to hear someone like this that has clearly thought things through and intellectualized each of the ’Liberal Agenda’ themes and could make logical sense out of them. Common sense does prevail. He got leadership from his church leader and worked through it logically.
I’ve noticed that so much of the Liberal/Progressive movement is drama, headlining thoughts that they can feel good about or get emotional about or gives them someone or some group or some thing to follow. As my teenage son would put it, “It’s all drama Dad, they need to think through what they’re doing”.
Needless to say, I’m soooo proud of my son, he’s a common sense kid and a God-fearing, American loving Patriot today and forever!!

It‘s hard to get through to the liberals when you don’t support their causes.
Abortion- I feel it’s terminating a life, I don’t support capital punishment either, I would rather see them serving hard time until they die.

brain dead liberal will tell me that it is a woman‘s right to do with her body as she wants and I’m not supporting women’s health by not providing a safe place for her to have an abortion. Am I also the blame for her pregnancy?

Gay Marriages- I feel marriage was defined by the church, therefore the church’s definition of marriage is the only definition acceptable. Anything other than that definition must be called something different.

brain dead liberal tells me I’m a homophobe. I have a gay son that I love very much. I will never turn my back on him. He is a sinner in God’s eyes and so am I. I don’t judge him for his actions, I pray for him daily to find his way.

illegal immigration- I feel illegal immigrants should not be allowed citizenship until they are properly screen and determined if they should be able to stay. Those who have criminal records here or in their homeland should be deported. No one should be given amnesty and all those who stay should be screened. Let the TSA agents do it.

brain dead liberal tells me I’m a racist. I’m married to a first generation Columbian, whose mother came to our country under the present immigration rules. Why can’t these illegals?
