What Was Found at the Very Core of Mexico’s Tallest Pyramid?

Archaeologists May Have Found Original Offering at the Center of the Pyramid of the Sun

MEXICO CITY (The Blaze/AP) — Archaeologists have dug to the very core of Mexico’s tallest pyramid and found what may be the original ceremonial offering placed on the site of the Pyramid of the Sun before construction began. Were they surprised, not really, but they still consider the finding significant and exciting.

The offerings found at the base of the pyramid in the Teotihuacan ruin site just north of Mexico City include a green serpentine stone mask so delicately carved and detailed that archaeologists believe it may have been a portrait.

The find also includes 11 ceremonial clay pots dedicated to a rain god similar to Tlaloc, who was still worshipped in the area 1,500 years later, according to a statement by the National Institute of Anthropology and History, or INAH.

The offerings, including bones of an eagle fed rabbits as well as feline and canine animals that haven’t yet been identified, were laid on a sort of rubble base where the temple was erected about A.D. 50.

“We know that it was deposited as part of a consecration ritual for the construction of the Pyramid of the Sun,” said INAH archaeologist Enrique Perez Cortes.

Experts followed an old tunnel dug through the pyramid by researchers in the 1930s that narrowly missed the center, and then dug small extensions and exploratory shafts off it.

What they found points to the earliest days of the still largely mysterious Teotihuacan culture.

The remains of three structures that predate the pyramid were found buried at the base. Archaeologists have known that the ceremonial significance of the site, perhaps as a “link” to the underworld, predates the pyramids.

They also found seven burials, some of them infant remains.

Check out this news report from April of this year about the earlier stages of investigation of the tunnel:

Susan Gillespie, an associate professor of anthropology at the University of Florida who was not involved in the project, called the find “exciting and important, although I would not say it was unexpected” given that dedicatory offerings were commonly placed in MesoAmerican pyramids.

“It is exciting that what looks like the original foundation dedicatory cache for what was to become the largest (in height) pyramid in Mexico (and one of the largest in the world) has finally been found, after much concerted efforts looking for it,” Gillespie wrote in an email.

She said the find gives a better picture of the continuity of religious practices during Teotihuacan’s long history. Some of the same themes found in the offering are repeated in ancient murals painted on the city’s walls centuries later.

George Cowgill, an anthropologist at Arizona State University, called the find “pretty important” and suggested the Tlaloc offerings may thicken the debate about whether the pyramid was linked to the sun, the underworld or Tlaloc, who was also considered a war god.

“The discovery of seven humans suggests that they were probably sacrificial victims, along with several species of fierce animals,” Cowgill wrote.

The city was founded nearly 2,500 years ago and came to have a dominant influence in architecture, trade and cultural in large swaths of ancient Mexico. But the identity of its rulers remains a mystery, and the city was abandoned by the time the Aztecs arrived in the area in the 1300s and gave it the name Teotihuacan, which means “the place where men become gods.”

They were using the practical side of geometry, they had no mathematical proof system; the greeks were still well ahead of the construction date of this pyramid, in their discovery of geometry.

      @ISHKA and Const…
The Greeks began the formalized teaching of many things…they didn’t “discover” it… Euclid was the first to put geometry into a textbook format…which is why we called it Euclidian Geometry..or the geometry of shapes…
The Egyptians and Chinese were using geometric principles 2-3000 years before Euclid wrote them down around 300 BC. Angles, Pythagorean Theorem, Trigonometry, volumes-perimeters-areas… all of these things were “known” about 1000′s of years before the Greeks wrote them down and formally began teaching them as Geometry.

      @ DLK
the Book of Mormon simply states that Jesus appeared to the Native Americans and taught them about his life and the true God….he didn’t make them Mormons…besides…there are others outside of the Mormon faith…which I am not…I am the other evil faith to the close minded .. Roman Catholic…which have LONG held that the Native Americans, in part, represented the lost 13th Tribe of Israel…due to the seemingly genetic similarity between those of Jewish and Native American background.

God stepped in for the Sumerian lineage Abraham and Isaac, but jeez, just dog on forgot about the western hemisphere letting people continue to sacrifice each other. I thought judeo-christian was the right religion but I think maybe the aztecs had it right… Otherwise god would have stopped them from murdering people to many gods too. He definitiely didn’t care about black people, never game them a torah.. Obviously aztects weren’t worthy either of it either. See why supernaturalism is stupid?? It’s just asinine. Just so blatantly racist. Another example of god preferring white people. So jesus meets the natives to tell them about the “proper god” and low and behold the white guy gets the job of profit after taking over. Not one redskin was jewish or christian in all the years they inhabited here before the jesus freak whites came over were presented with the god of abraham or anyone made a profit. Now if the white mane when first meeting the indians found they were also on their knees for jesus that would be interesting but clearly that is not true. Supernaturalism is so insane!

Anyway he lived near the Dophar mountain range (only place in the world, I think, to grow frankincense). This is about 25 miles from the City of Salalah, where the Queen of Sheba palace ruins are. Anyway, its doubtful he was ever in Egypt, although possible I suppose.

I was taught that the greeks invented geometry. Looks like this pyramid uses sdome geometry.
      ———————————————————————————————————————————————-
The Greeks didn’t come close to inventing Geometry. Geometry, even though people are taught that Theaetetus introduced it, and followers like Euclid. Concurrent with that Descartes is credited following the 3rd century BC “findings” for expanding Geometry with the inclusion of Algebra leading to spacial Geometry beyond Euclid thought into the 19th century.

The problem with that is that it’s been used for at least 5 – 10,000 years that we know of. The Greeks merely Westernized what was before that a common mathematics system that didn’t do a lot of differentiation of discipline. The Egyptian triangle predates the Pythagorean triangle, as well as the use of the golden triangle and many other mathematical applications used by the Egyptians in spacial and final volume infinitesimal calculus for erecting some structures which would defy the most serious of earthquakes. Even the Tower of Babel was build on the knowledge of Geometry.

Saw a show on building pyramids and a would be mathematician said if the ancients were so intelligent why didn’t they build tall buildings straight and square. The reason? The chance of collapse in pyramid building is minimized.

      Erm… What 13th tribe?

Genesis teaches that Jacob had 12 sons… Asher, Benjamin, Dan, Gad, Issachar, Judah, Naphtali, Reuben, Simeon, Zebulun, Levi*, and Joseph**.

In Exodus, God gave the Levites an inheritance in the Promised Land that was based in several sanctuary cities and the preisthood, but no real land. In accordance with God‘s promise to give Joseph a double share of the Israel’s inheritance from God (and also to maintain the overall number of tribes), God split Joseph into Ephraim and Menasseh (named for his two sons).

There are only 12 and only 12 tribes. This 13th tribe nonsense is extrabiblical garbage that amounts to apostacy.

I suggest anyone who believes there were 13 tribes in Israel, go back and read Genesis and Exodus (You would do well with the rest of the Pentateuch, and keep on goin’ when you get to Deuteronomy) and understand why Levites were no longer considered a tribe after Exodus, and keep your nose out of books written by a man who was the only person to see, read, and interpret mysterious golden plates that were revealed only to him.

All of the bible save for Revelation was revealed to everyone as it happened. Anyone believing in a third testament revealed 1600 years after the final events of the bible (with nobody allowed to verify what a criminal who dabbled in sorcery says the plates said) is begging to be led astray.

Everyone saw the first two happen. The third? You have to believe the (false) prophet.

The Mayan Calendar has resemblances to the Jewish Calendar and the Mayan alphabet has many characters which are identical to Phoenician of the timeframe when Phoenicians were the sea merchants of the world. However, that does NOT make Mayans (or Aztecs) anything resembling any lost tribe of Israel. Aint not such thing according to the Bible (even your Apocrapha).

I thought the same thing – hmmm, where men become gods, and a pyramid temple. I had a Spanish teacher in high school who did not blink an eye when my sister and I converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He had spent a good deal of time either in the Mexican culture or somewhere in Central or South America, and said the native inhabitants of the area were expecting a “white god” when Columbus and the Spanish explorers showed up. He even asked me for a Book of Mormon. Qué buen profesor! I believe the Book of Mormon to be true, and it is interesting to see aspects of our religion scattered here and there in the non-believing world. Just sayin’.

      @ symphoic

Only problem is the only place “reformed egypian” has been used or found has been on sacred plates no one has seen translated by a kid, with a rock, in a hat. Yeah seems legit to me.

According to the Book of Mormon, that scripture of the Latter Day Saint movement was originally written in reformed Egyptian characters[1] on plates of “ore”[2] by prophets living in the Western Hemisphere from perhaps as early as 2600 BC until as late as AD 421. Joseph Smith, Jr., the founder of the movement, published the Book of Mormon in 1830 as a translation of these golden plates. Scholarly reference works on languages do not, however, acknowledge the existence of either a “reformed Egyptian” language or “reformed Egyptian” script as it has been described in Mormon belief. No archaeological, linguistic, or other evidence of the use of Egyptian writing in ancient America has been discovered.[3]

I find it extremely hard to beleive that ancient peoples were building pyramids all over the earth, at roughly the same time, yet they had no way to communicate across long distances. There is a piece of this puzzle missing. More research should be done, I think we have all missed something.

Read 1421; watch the History Channel’s Ancient Discoveries. The ancient world was a lot more advanced than we often give them credit for.

I believe that civilization lost SO much knowledge when the Roman Empire fell, that it wasn’t funny. There are so many similarities between Rome at the beginning of it’s decline and the US too. It’s really sad to see.

Gen 11:1 And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.
Gen 11:2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.
Gen 11:3 And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter.
Gen 11:4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.
Gen 11:5 And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.
Gen 11:6 And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.
Gen 11:7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.
Gen 11:8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.
Gen 11:9 Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

i agree, they are all linked, if you dig deep enough you will find they have many common denominators with each other….serpents dragons and birds and human sacrifice to name a few….the fiery flying cockatrice…..it is the knowledge of good and evil, the fallen angel from the sky(sun god) satan, the illumant one.. typically the slaughter of first borns, they would have orgys with virgins just like snakes mate then sacrifice those babys as the first fruits. Cains decendants were the ones who first were given this knowledge…burnt brick, iron sword making, roots (drugs) most likely a form of DMT etc….

Well, I wouldn’t say “building pyramids at the same time.” The first Egyptian pyramid was built in 2600 BC (2800 years ago). The Mexican pyramid was built about 50 AD (2000 years ago). Also, the Maya just piled up a bunch of rocks and dirt and then built the pyramid around that. They also built bigger pyramids over small pyramids, enlarging pyramids over time. The Egyptians leveled an area and then constructed the pyramid from sandstone blocks from the ground up stacked on top of each other and then encased by smooth limestone. The Maya pyramids are “step” pyramids while only the early Egyptian pyramids were steps. Pyramids are also the easiest way to build tall structures. It takes a lot more engineering (and in the case of skyscrapers, steel girders) to build tall narrow structures.

You mean you find it hard to believe that people all over the world wanted to receive more recognition than their peers, so that started building monuments the best they knew how; by stacking large rocks on top of one another? And that as the means of recognition became instilled in the culture, they got better at stacking the rocks, and even started stacking them higher.

You’re also confused that charlatans, claiming to have a vision from another world, would proclaim that a “god” was upset at them during difficult times and declare that someone had to give something up? That someone generally being a rival.

People came up with the same solutions to the same problems all over the world, because people are the same all over the world.

there is never any mention of “coins” in the text. “coinage” was an editors explanitory heading and an assumption. the swords were never described as metal and in fact may very well have been wood since some verses descibed the people as saying they did not want the swords to be stained by the blood of there brethren any longer – you can’t stain meatl but you can wood. plus its a translation, you go with the closest thing that is recognizable to the people you are translating to. an elephant “type” creatures have in fact been found in these areas. i know you don’t believe the B.O.M. but at least now you have some info to hone your anti aguements with.

      @p8riot

LOL maybe you should do some additional research. The artilcle you posted states there were horses. There were not horses in the Americas till the Europeans showed up. Silk was not found in the Americas. You are quoting a article from “Anonymous” for all we know that is some Mormon trying to justifiy his religion.

      @mike
Twist the coinage thing all you like.

The Book of Mormon does indicate that at least some swords were made of metal, specifically, “steel.” Some Jaredites are described with steel weapons (see Ether 7:9), and Mosiah 8:11 mentions Limhi’s explorers finding the remains of Jaredite battles with blades that have rusted, suggesting that they were metallic.

Nephi1 also acquired an Old World steel sword from Laban (1 Nephi 4:9).
This is from fairmormon.org. Maybe you should read your book abit better.

As pointed out to to p8riot there is not real proof of elephants three thousand years ago in the Americas. Just like there were no horses, silk, metal swords, metal wheels, barley, wheat, giant cites that vanished, machines, roads, or battles where millions of people died, yet leave no trace of evidence they existed.

Look you want to believe in many gods, and you becoming a god, fine. Do it. But quit trying to trick Christians into believing you are no different than Baptists and Methodists.

      Galatians 1:8
      New International Version (NIV)

8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse!

Pretty sure, Joe Smith said a angel came to him and told him where to find the “new gospel”. Hmm if you believe in the Bible that completely destroys Joe Smith as being a prophet.

Look I get it if you are raised in a cult it would be hard to wake up from it. I am currently talking to one of my closest friends who is a Mormon about this. I am trying to help him use the Bible as his guide to see if the Mormon religion is what it advertises.
      Bible verse on False prophets
Jer 23:14 I have seen also in the prophets of Jerusalem an horrible thing: they commit adultery, and walk in lies: they strengthen also the hands of evildoers, that none doth return from his wickedness: they are all of them unto me as Sodom, and the inhabitants thereof as Gomorrah.

How many wives did old Joe have again? According to http://www.lds-mormon.com/12117.shtml he had 33. So lets recap, prophets commit adultery, walk in lies hmm sounds like a fake Christian religion where you can do good deeds and tithe and get exalted where you can become a god.

Lets all remember who tempted humans with becoming gods. Oh yeah Satan.

Wake up Mormons, you are a in the closet Scientology. At least they dont try to fool people and pretend they are Christian.

Yours is one of the most obsurd comments I have ever seen. Your religion is pretty much trying to prove others are wrong instead of worrying about what you believe, as many typical anti-mormons do. You can quote individual scriptures all day and rip apart any religion whether it be Catholic, Baptist, Mormon, Jewish, etc. Don’t be so ignorant as to preach someone there own religion when you are not even part of that religion, nor have even read what their religion is based upon.

The problem with your so called argument is you take one verse and condemn someone. If that be the case, then your argument suggests that even the apostles were sinners so they automatically go to hell……..right?? Isn’t there a verse that states that anyone with sin goes to hell? Understand the scriptures as a whole, not just by a verse of your choosing.

Your comment: (Lets all remember who tempted humans with becoming gods. Oh yeah Satan.)

Satan tempted others to take God’s glory, that is a stark difference from claiming he tempted humans to become Gods.

      Don’t try and twist words.
Maybe you should think before casting stones.

      @manuk

I welcome any challenge to The Bible from anyone.

As I stated on a earlier post why I am so against the Mormon faith. Your faith targets and misleads other Christians to think you are just like any other Christian faith.

You cannot be a Christian and strive to become a god. That compeletly diminishses the power of the one true God and Jesus Christ. If you know anything about the Mormon faith you know this is a true statement and you are ultimately striving to become a god. That is completely against the Christian faith.

Your last statement proved my point.
      MANUK
“Satan tempted others to take God’s glory, that is a stark difference from claiming he tempted humans to become Gods.

      Don’t try and twist words.
Maybe you should think before casting stones.”

You twisted words of the Bible for one.

      Genesis 3 – 4
4 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and YOU WOULD BE LIKE GOD, knowing good and evil.”

It says nothing about taking God’s Glory. That is a big if not huge amount of word twisting on your part.

Next and most important problem with what you said is Satan did it to others. So if Satan continues to do it, Jesus Christ never offered it, doesnt that mean that Joseph Smith a prophet for Satan?

Seems pretty clear to me, but I havent been brainwashed.

Mrs Wilderness’ grandfather dated this pyramid in the early 1920s. He was a geologist and used lava flows that had partially covered the structure to date it. Many atifacts from the area are still displayed at the Auckland, New Zealand museum.

Let us get the facts straight. Please people READ YOUR BIBLES.
      1. They were not Jews they were Hebrews/children of Israel, who were slaves in Egypt.
      2. The word Jew is not mentioned until 2 Kings 16 when the tribe of Judah (Jews) was warring against the house of ISRAEL. (There are 12 tribes of Israel Judah (Jews) are only one. Gen. 48 and 49. The House of Judah did not exist until Jacob had 12 sons. Get the time line Abraham, Isaac and then Jacob.
      3. Read Exodus 1:1&2 names all 12 sons of Israel (Jacob) who came into Egypt. Read further and you will see they were called Hebrews and the children of Israel, not Jews.
      4. Moses was a born of the House of Levi (3rd eldest son of Jacob/Israel) not Judah (Jews). Exodus 2.
5 Abraham was not a Jew, Isaac was not a Jew; Jacob/Israel was not a Jew, Moses was not a Jew.
