What’s She Looking at? Media Fixates on Bachmann’s Eyes During SOTU Response

It’s the question that is dominating talk of Rep. Michele Bachmann’s (R-MN) Tea Party response speech to the State of the Union: Who, or what, was she staring at? And why?
As many of you may have noticed, Bachmann’s response was only carried by one network on Tuesday, CNN. It was also supposed to be broadcast live on the Tea Party Express website via a separate camera, but technical difficulties prevented that from happening. That’s important because most of the country, then, saw Bachmann only as broadcast by CNN. And here’s what they saw:
For many, that meant Bachmann‘s message didn’t connect with the American people because she never made eye contact with them. Tuesday night and Wednesday morning were dominated by “cameragate”:
Rep. Michele Bachmann may fall into that media-savvy cadre of politicians who, as the saying goes, has never met a camera she didn’t like, but Tuesday night many Americans got the impression she was talking into the wrong camera. … [T]o those who were watching on CNN, the only news network that made the decision to air the speech live, she appeared to be looking off-screen to the left.
MSNBC host Rachel Maddow mocked Bachmann’s gaze:
So did Obama‘s senior adviser David Axelrod while appearing with Lawrence O’Donnell:
The incident drove Keith Olbermann absolutely crazy. He tweeted about it 10 times last night (eight of his tweets are below, with the earliest ones at the bottom):
Yahoo! News noted the awkward telecast with the headline, “Bachmann’s response marred by technical problems.” But before anyone delves into an anti-Bachmann CNN conspiracy theory, Yahoo! points out that the pool camera was actually operated by Fox News.
So what happened? As is obvious, Bachmann was looking into the wrong camera. There were actually two cameras filming the response, the pool camera operated by Fox and broadcast by CNN, and another camera that was supposed to broadcast the speech on the Tea Party Express website. Bachmann chose the wrong one. And since the web stream never worked, the only footage of the speech that exists is of Bachmann seemingly staring off into space.
CNN political director Sam Feist had this to say via Twitter after the incident:
In light of all this, Mediate raises (via Eric Deggans) the most obvious point: We can probably expect to see a spoof of this on “Saturday Night Live” soon.
(For anyone actually interested in the tenets of Bachmann’s speech, you can read it here.)

Posted on January 27, 2011 at 12:56amWTP, Equal Housing was a good idea ….. right ???? Allowing people to attempt to purchase houses that they could not afford and thereafter default is probably the main cause of our economy being weakened. Yet no one talks about it and everyone who opposed Equal Housing is labeled a “racist.” Keep chucking stones at those who come up with good ideas and are brave enough to oppose the ones that seem sweet on the outside but a pure venom on the inside.
Just because certain laws seem noble in theory does not make them practicable. That is the problem with people on the left, they judge something as first glance without examining it thoroughly enough to get a real impression of what it actually is.

Bachmann WAS looking into the TP Express cameras not the MSM Pool.
She is a smart lady and she “Danced with the ones that brought her” as they like to say.
And yes even though the TP Express server was overloaded, those that hooked in early enough got to see it from the correct camera angle, and except for the stuttering caused by too little bandwith it was excellent.
Typical of MSM they take potshots at Bachmann instead of correcting their own crap cameramen for setting up in a bad spot.

Why? Can’t people offer criticism?
This site is predominantly tea party, I doubt seriously you’re going to find many people who disagree with her on any major points. That’s to be expected, unless she said something that was against tea party positions. Why would any group criticize somebody who stated their position accurately?
I think the “she didn’t look at the camera” critique is indicative of what some people focus on. “Optics” or whatever they’ve renamed psychological manipulation these days. It’s kind of funny, I was talking to my two kids last night about the SOTU address. They asked why I wouldn’t watch it or listen to it. I answered that since at least the days of JFK that image consultants had been manipulating how a politician looks on television in order to create specific states of mind in the viewing audience, and as such, I refuse to watch or listen to them. However, I did inform them that they should and must read the speeches given by these people in order to be informed, which is a duty of being a citizen in a Constitutional Republic.
Image, “optics”, psychological manipulation, that is the fare of masters for slaves. Not for me.

Corporations in 19 of the member states of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development paid 16.1 percent of their profits in taxes between 2000 and 2005, on average, while corporations in the United States paid 13.4 percent. Obama himself said last night that he wants the corporate tax rate lowered, to help small business, but with all the loopholes that only benefit big corps closed.
She repeated the thouroughly debunked 16,500 IRS agents claim. Again, not true. The law requires the IRS mostly to hand out tax credits, not collect penalties. THe claim of 16,500 agents is based on guesswork, false assumptions, and outright misrepresentation
She also falsely attributed fiscal year 2009′s defecit, which belongs to Bush, to Obama.
So texascommensense is that enough or shall I continue? because theres plenty more.

Another reason why MSNBC and the like have no ratings. They treat thier audience like a bunch of fools.

Posted on January 26, 2011 at 12:10pmGnomeChomsky, how many government bureaucracies did the Obamacare bill create? It is government run by proxy, for now anyway. Obama himself said single payer was his goal.
Her point about corporate tax rates was they need to be lower, not higher. Fine, get rid of corporate loopholes. A flat tax accomplishes that. Companies will continue to leave the US as long as it cheaper to do business elsewhere. CEOs understand basic arithmetic.
Who determines whether or not you pay the fine for not buying health insurance? The IRS does. Where would you send said penalties? You send them to the IRS. People are smart enough to see the truth in this, however it is spun. So why can’t some who is capable of paying his own medical bills, even without insurance, exist in America without having to buy a product for a private business? It’s called “redistribution of wealth”. Redistribution of wealth doesn’t make more rich people; redistribution of wealth makes more poor people. Not the American way and America has been great for over 200 years. The number of people coming here for the American Dream is all the proof one needs. The even came here without Obamacare,
True, most of the fiscal year 2009 was during Bush’s term, but the fiscal year ends October 1. Remember, budget bills start in the House of Representatives, the Democratically controlled House of Representatives that year. To suggest Bush spent anywhere near what Obama has spent is simply dishonest.

Apparently, to GnomeChomsky and the like, *more* and *massive* government intervention in health care means that health care is *not* government run. And good point about American CEOs: apparently, to GnomeChomsky and the like, American corporations are so profit-greedy that they establish businesses overseas where it’s more expensive to do so(?). And yes: the phrase “the policies of the last 8 years” was used so often by Obama that you would figure that, at least by accident, just once, he would have let slip: “the last two years of which my party controlled both houses of Congress”.

I don’t know if @texas wants more but I do. You post an awful lot of words with nothing to back it up. It’s called spin. Let’s just take your first point about Healthcare. How can any “sane” person think that when the Federal Government tries to “MANDATE” the purchase of healthcare that it’s not government run healthcare? And how can any “sane” person say it’s not government run healthcare when an appointed government official (HHS Secretary), gets to set up panels and agencies of un-elected officials to decide what will and will not be allowed in healthcare plans? It doesn‘t matter how it’s delivered. These two points alone make it government run healthcare.
So you go on, an on, an on all you want but we all know it’s a load of crap. And Have a Nice Day!!!!!!

Posted on January 26, 2011 at 6:12pmMODERN PATRIOT, the answer to the first part is that the mandate is to buy from a PRIVATE INSURANCE COMPANY (not a “gov’t-run” company) and the second is a myth as you describe it (as if “panels” come between you and your doctor)

Posted on January 26, 2011 at 8:49pmModern Patriot, there were far more government agencies setup besides HHS. Read the 2,000+ pages and you’ll find them. Apparently our representative government can not.
I never said the mandate did make it government-run, but it is certainly not constitutional. Read the entire thread; I was debating the IRS’ role. Forcing someone to buy something just because they breathe air is wrong; taxing them when they exhale something plants use to make food is equally as wrong. That’s over-simplified, but you get the point.
Do you disagree that Obama wants single-payer? This is a step in that direction because he knows he can’t get in all at once. He has said it in his own words.
