According to a new study produced by the U.K. government, some potential effects of global warming could include improved mental health, less colds, more farm production, less energy for heating and increased habitat for some species, according to the Daily Mail. But it also could result in things like extreme flooding, shorter staff hours due to hot temperatures inside buildings and less habitat for less tolerant species.
The first Climate Change Risk Assessment from the U.K.’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs evaluated 100 of the more than 700 potential impacts of climate change. According to reports, it’s not all bad. The Daily Mail has more on the pros and cons:
With the melting of the Arctic sea, new routes will open up which will reduce journey times and fuel costs.
The warmer water temperatures mean sole and plaice will be more plentiful in the UK, though cod and haddock will move to cooler climates.
Also, with Britain acquiring a more temperate climate, public health costs are set to decline.
[...]
The report found that warmer conditions in Scotland could lead to an increase in forest productivity and yields of key agricultural crops, although there is a potential for increased threats due to new or more widespread pests and diseases.
Agriculture and forestry will also be affected. Droughts and some pests and diseases could increase as a result of warmer weather, which could reduce timber yields and quality and drive up timber costs by the 2080s.
On the plus side, sugar beet yields could rise by up to 70 percent and wheat yields by as much as 140 percent by mid-century due to longer growing seasons if water and nutrients are available.
“A warmer climate presents opportunities to grow new crops such as soy, sunflowers, peaches, apricots and grapes, while new markets may open up overseas for British grown produce,” the study said.
The journal Nature reports that the study was a requirement of the 2008 Climate Change Act, which requires the U.K. to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions by 80 percent from its 1990 levels by 2050. Nature reports Bob Watson, chief scientist, as saying flooding would be the earliest consequence. It states that the U.K. already spends £1.3 billion (US$2.04 billion) each year on flood damage, but by 2080, the report states, costs could rise anywhere from £2.1 billion to £12 billion.
The Daily Mail has compiled a list of the upsides and downsides of global warming: check it out here.

Posted on January 27, 2012 at 10:15amGod is still in charge; not the Loony Left. What a treat to read comments from my funny non-leftist friends on this issue. The earth has been warming or cooling ever since it’s creation. Ice core samples from Antarctica show CO2 rose AFTER temperatures rose; NOT before. Also it is a fact warmer sea water releases more CO2 into the atmosphere. Scientists also say sun spot cycles are more consistent with warming and cooling cycles than any other factor. And remember, CO2 makes up only .38 of one percent of our atmosphere! It’s time to defund the Communist run UN which started all this “man caused”crap!

Posted on January 27, 2012 at 9:11amYes let’s all worry about climate change.. It’s only been happening for millions of years naturally.. And of course the human race has no right to be on the planet.. It’s been proven we are infinitesimally affecting the climate.. How dare we have a right to exist.. This Green Mental Illness goes far beyond respect for our environment, wise and prudent use of our natural resources..

Posted on January 27, 2012 at 8:35am“England – what happened to you?”
Report Post »Well, the climate got warmer, winters milder and there are now vineyards across the south of England. The rising sea levels are a fact – believe it or not it‘s quite easy to measure high tide marks and we’ve got records that go back hundreds of years. Coastal defences have been improved in some areas but decisions have to be taken about which areas of the coast to protect. The growing seasons have been extended and I now have roses still blooming in my garden – in January.
If you actually read the article there is some really good information about the effects it’s having. Climate change is a fact – you can argue about the causes but all you need to do is look out your window in many parts of the world to see it happening. One of the most interesting aspects picked up in the report was the “passage across the arctic”. This cuts 1,000s of miles off some sea routes and again – it’s happening. If you need proof – sail North.
Instead of the knee jerk reactions why not think about the pros and cons of the changes which are taking place. We are having to deal with them – and we’re lucky. Some third world countries will be far worse affected. England is fine – but thanks for asking.

Posted on January 27, 2012 at 9:07amYes you can see climate change. In Alaska, they are running out of fuel oil because the sea ice is so thick. Icebreakers had to be used to deliver the fuel.

Posted on January 27, 2012 at 9:36amJOH, take a look at some REAL SCIENCE. There have been thousands of core samples taken from many different regions on Earth. They all prove the same thing, the planet goes through NATURAL WARMING AND COOLING TRENDS ON A REGUALR BASIS. Man is neither the cause or the cure for such NATURAL EVENTS. The whole global warming, climate change gambit is nothing more than a way for the liberal progressive elites to make billions off of all of us for nothing. I don’t know which side of the fence you are on, but if you are one of the tree huggers, then grow a brain, if not, then you know what I am saying is true.

More specifically:
1. Allowing psuedo-communists in your country to spend billions on the nonsense that warming is man’s fault and that by using less petrol or in general, making modern life unaffordable and impossible – that somehow they will “save the earth” by returning it to previous temperatures.
2. Allowing England to be settled by foreigners with no intention of integrating into English culture & society.
3. Loosing your grip on national sovereignty and democracy by getting into bed with the E.U.
Those were foremost in my mind when I wrote: “England, what happened to you?”

As for “Allowing England to be settled by foreigners with no intention of integrating into English culture & society” I’ve forgiven the Normans – it‘s been a thousand years now and they’ve started to integrate.

Probably the first of my family to go there since my great uncle Attakullakulla traveled there in 1730. Posted on January 27, 2012 at 7:32amI think that it’s ridiculous that people would think that global warming would cause coastal flooding from melting ice shelfs, ice bergs etc.. Think of this; only 10% of an ice shelf is above water, the other 90%! is under water.
We all have done this, left a glass full of ice and whatever beverage only to come back later to a glass with no ice and a significantly decreased volume. Ice creates a “void” in water that itself cannot fill upon melting.
Global warming would be very good!—–think terrarium. It would be wonderful, crops growing in once desolate areas, a more stable atmosphere and thus less violent weather brought on by extreme weather cashes, year long outdoor swimming pools and palm trees in North Dakota!

Posted on January 27, 2012 at 5:10amAs a “science fanboy” I‘ve noticed that it’s during the warm periods in our climate that life thrives and grows to enormous size. The dinosaurs being the perfect example. It’s when it gets cold that life really struggles.
So, I thought I made quite the obvious observation that it’s not global warming that we should really be worrying about (since life seems to love warmth) but global COOLING that should really scare us.
Skeptics of “the end is near!1“ narrative being pushed by ”warmists” have long noted that warmer periods in human history were associated with a massive BOOM in human civilization spreading and advancing.
It’s been pretty obvious to me that the “warmists” are intentionally focusing on all of the negatives that will come with a slight and gradual warming in our crlimate while ignoring all the tremendous positives that such a climate would bring.
This is the first time I‘ve even seen a mainstream media report finally acknowledge that global warming isn’t the universal environmental apocalypse like it’s usually protrayed to be.
Overall, on balance, it seems quite clear to me that, really, global warming won’t be all that bad. Humanity as a species will adapt to it just fine, just like we did in the past during other warm periods.
So, kudos to these reporters for helping to tone down all the fear mongering and hysteria surrounding the global warming debate.

Posted on January 27, 2012 at 1:55amBoy, I sure hope they make their goal by 2080. According to other reports we will have killed ourselves by then, but oh, well. It is one thing the Progressives love to use as the basis for their control, meaning something that cannot be proven, and global warming cannot be proven, to which when it was exposed because they were putting out false and altered data, infiltrated every aspect of our belifs about life, infested our schools and cartoons….OUR CARTOONS, to make us think we were destroying our planet, just so they could control us (everyone on the planet that is).
The Cold War isn’t over folks, it just changed from threats from ouside, to threats from within, but hey, can’t prove global warming, can’t prove a conspiracy, either.
Oh, and recycle. Although that is what started this whole thing, been doing it since the early 60s (used to be bottles at the grocery stores to buy candy), but it is more about being conservative with items and reusing them, but don’t tell me my CO2 output is dangerous, unless you intend to make me starve all the plants on the planet? Wouldn’t Darwin argue that the strongest would adapt to changes and thrive, ultimately leading to “better” humans?
