What‘s the Top Secret ’Lab‘ Google Won’t Talk About?

Google’s innovative powers are now being revealed for the first time as going well beyond that of just driverless cars. Have you heard of Google X? It’s ok, many people haven‘t and Google won’t talk about it anyway, but the New York Times has some insider information on the  lab where “the future is being imagined.”

First Inside Scoop of Google X Lab Revealed

Google's no-hands necessary car may be the first of many innovations we could see come out of the Google X lab.

The Times reports that in an unknown location somewhere in the Bay Area in a lab “run as mysteriously as the C.I.A.,” ideas that most would classify as hair brained, impossible, too far fetched and seemingly even useless are being developed and tested:

It’s a place where your refrigerator could be connected to the Internet, so it could order groceries when they ran low. Your dinner plate could post to a social network what you’re eating. Your robot could go to the office while you stay home in your pajamas. And you could, perhaps, take an elevator to outer space.

These are just a few of the dreams being chased at Google X, the clandestine lab where Google is tackling a list of 100 shoot-for-the-stars ideas. In interviews, a dozen people discussed the list; some work at the lab or elsewhere at Google, and some have been briefed on the project. But none would speak for attribution because Google is so secretive about the effort that many employees do not even know the lab exists.

Although most of the ideas on the list are in the conceptual stage, nowhere near reality, two people briefed on the project said one product would be released by the end of the year, although they would not say what it was.

“They’re pretty far out in front right now,” said Rodney Brooks, a professor emeritus at M.I.T.’s computer science and artificial intelligence lab and founder of Heartland Robotics. “But Google’s not an ordinary company, so almost nothing applies.”

The Times goes on to state that Google co-founder Sergey Brin is most likely deeply involved with the lab, according to several sources and confirmed by Brin, though not explicitly:

“Where I spend my time is farther afield projects, which we hope will graduate to important key businesses in the future,” Mr. Brin said recently, though he did not mention Google X.

The Times speculates that robots are very likely a key area of innovation in the lab, as well as a “web of things” that could be connected to the Internet:

Among the items that could be connected: a garden planter (so it could be watered from afar); a coffee pot (so it could be set to brew remotely); or a light bulb (so it could be turned off remotely). Google said in May that by the end of this year another team planned to introduce a Web-connected light bulb that could communicate wirelessly with Android devices.

The lab has an all-star cast of top scientific minds, according to the Times, including: robotocist and artificial intelligence expert Sebastian Thrun (he teaches at Stanford and also invented the first driverless car); Stanford professor Andrew Ng whose main focus is neuroscience to artificial intelligence; and Johnny Chung Lee, who created Microsoft’s Kinect.

How about a bar code on your hand or forehead, or a red light that flashes on your hand when you turn 65, or some protein crackers made from senior citizens. like the movie Soylent Green, Google has been doing some programs in China as well.

      @JZS

Your attempt at being incendiary only comes off as ignorant. Everything that is being developed along the lines discussed in this article will help the rich get richer. Your attempt to drag politics into the discussion epitomizes the attempt at political polarization. This is a human issue, not conservative or liberal, yet you see plates that count calories or cars that you cannot control as a perfect opportunity to highlight your hatred. Where is the love?

Soon enough it will be impossible to buy a tv or refrigerator that is not connected to the internet. Just because a fridge can tell if it is empty doesnt mean a poor person wont still be starving.

Quite playing the divisive Rothschild game of blue vs red, conservative vs liberal, gay vs straight, etc…..

I guess nothing out of the ordinary concerns you? Now, I am not saying this lab is doing anything nefarious yet, but some of the statements made has some concern with me. Why would I want a device in my home to report to others on what I need or don’t need. Sorry, I can make my own decisions and don’t need some device to tell me when to go tinkle, fill my refrigerator, or other things. Frankly, this is communism and if you can’t recognize this, then you need to get yourself educated, because frankly I question your intelligence.

Although, I foresee a time when they will lay claim to “all content” and to the right to ‘edit it’ as they see fit (government propaganda arm).

There use to be tons of firms like that in this country until the feds decided to lock up R&D

A firm called Pratt & Whitney use to have a large R&D and manufacturing plant on the east coast of Florida
They went gangbusters for years, until the feds put an end to R&D corporate write offs
P&W developed jet and rocket propulsion including a bid for the space shuttle rocket propulsion units.
They lost that bid but continue to produce jet engines.

The main plant was miles from civilization when it was constructed in 1956
Getting into the yard was and still is impossible unless you are cleared by security
A secret clearance was required for most of the plant and testing areas were highly guarded by humans with weapons and nasty swamp animals.

In contrast, a small firm nestled within the city boundaries developed and manufactures laser range finders.
The only way into the plant, if you’re not an employee, is to be invited by the owner and developer of the range finders.
If he doesn’t know you, you’re promptly escorted off the property by humans with weapons and very nasty dogs.

My son works for a computer program development firm and there is no way to get into the building unless you have a secret clearance.

Hell, even Clorox, Kleenex, newspapers, news organizations and ice cream manufacturers have high-level security.

      Moronic Paul supporter,
Is this the forum and perhaps article that I need to start using to ask my questions on why my 2-cycle leaf blower is not running right? I checked the spark plug and it’s clean, I can see down in the cylinder and it looks like it has had normal wear. My fuel mixture is 32:1, which is what is recommended, but I just don’t understand why it runs fine when cold, but then revs up and almost dies over and over when it finally warms up. Any clues?
Oh, so you are telling me that this has nothing to do with the article? Hmmm, are you sure? I really thought this was the place to ask my question, or let you know how I thought.

to:Jado Just some thoughts….do not use gas with ethanol in it. It is very hydroscopic and is not good on the engine parts especially left all winter. Another good idea from our gov… increase our taxes to prop up something that is not good for us. Second …. for the hot running problem, try tightening the bolts holding the cylinder down, they expand causing a gap for air to be sucked into the cylinder. Hope this helps

In my opinion, GOOGLE is in bed with Obama. Have you noticed how GOOGLE’s website info drastically starting changing to very liberal in 2007, when Obama was running for president? It’s getting harder and harder to find any negative information (or photos) about Obama and his socialist, liberal buddies. A lot of info that I had found on GOOGLE, no longer exists. Also, GOOGLE’s homepage doodle does not acknowledge some special dates in American history, our heroes, conservatives, or religious holidays, but always acknowledges the liberal, socialist, foreign events and their people. Don’t take my word for it. On Thanksgiving day and Christmas day, go to GOOGLE’s homepage and see what kind of crap they doodle those day. It will not have anything to do with the true meaning of Thanksgiving or Christmas, if they acknowledge those two holidays at all.

I just reread Jurassic Park. One interesting point of view espoused by Crichton, through the character Ian Malcolm, and reiterated in the movie is that science is groundbreaking and violent, but no one ever asks if the direction taken is appropriate, proper, what damages will be incurred, how it will negatively impact a population. Simply because it is a new idea and that someone else might think of it and act on it first, our newest breed of scientists especially (or thinkers in this case), will simply act upon it, invent, create, search and destroy to be the first.

A car that drives you…what a way to teach responsibility, to remove the enjoyment of driving, and to make driving even more of a right and less of a privilege.

A robot to go to work for you? Reducing the physical capabilities of everyone, making us inherently weaker and less capable of self-sufficient behaviours. What next, chairs to control said robots that move around for us? We’ve done enough damage to health by Hoverround and other motorized wheel/chairs with baskets and control bars.

Dinner plate to a social network…just another tidbit of pointless information that people will love to read that cuts into personal productivity, let alone the people who view said pointless twitter feeds while at work.

So, companies that screw the pooch and get government handouts will thrive, but firms that create dazzling products and make big profits get taxed out the ying-yang. Sounds like a business model that won’t last.

It would be exciting to have that type of cash and that type of intellectual power put to positive use. As long as it‘s Google own money and not Gov cash I’m all for it.

Oh you know the typical things: Automatic highways/ cars that drives themselves; robotic chauffeurs; space elevator; transporters; and Star-trek-like phasers. Come-on, I thought of these things 15 years ago, and even the idea of car companies remaking the old body style.

I don’t think the glass highway thing is going to work though because of earthquakes and costly repair, and because heated highways would be an issue also. Underground cross country railways will be an earthquake liability.

Just as long as the first couple of hundred thousand cars with Google robot drivers are used solely by Google employees, I have no objection to Google X, or even Google XI.
