What‘s With David Axelrod’s Weird Tweet About Mormons? And Why Did He Delete It?

Top Obama re-election adviser David Axelrod posted — and then deleted — something of a head-scratching tweet Monday that included a link to a news story about menstruating Mormon women being barred from official ceremonies.

Whats Up With David Axelrods Weird Mormon Tweet?“Wring URS. This is the Medicare story,” Axelrod tweeted Monday afternoon with a link to this story from the Salt Lake Tribune, titled: “Menstruating Mormons barred from temple proxy baptisms?”

From the article:

Mormon feminists recently learned that some young women were wrongly blocked from doing LDS proxy baptisms – which include wearing all-white clothing and being fully immersed in water – because they were menstruating. Though this was not a consistent prohibition, the women had anecdotal evidence that it was happening in some Mormon temples, including several in Utah. Trouble is, such a ban is bogus.

As the Atlantic Wire despaired: “What does it all mean?!”

What does “wring” mean? And what is URS? We may never know: Axelrod quickly deleted it.

He replaced it about an hour later with another tweet about Medicare.

Whats Up With David Axelrods Weird Mormon Tweet?“This is proper link to Medicare story. Mitt won’t take it, but most Americans would lose under Mitt-Ryan voucher,” he wrote, linking this time to a Politico story about Mitt Romney declining to sign up for Medicare on his birthday.

The Atlantic had several theories about the tweet and its subsequent disappearance from Axelrod’s Twitter account: That it could have been a kind of “on-purpose accident“ to ”promote the idea that Mormons are weird”; that it was meant as a private message but was mistakenly posted to his main account; or that he sent the wrong short-linked article by accident.

The Obama campaign wrote in to the Atlantic to say Axelrod “mistakenly tweeted out a link to the wrong story.”

Unfortunately, the meaning of “Wring URS” received no such clarification.

Ok. First of all, knuckelhead, Mormons don’t “BAN” anything. Censorship is not part of the doctrine.

Second, you are going to be hard pressed to find a religous organization more in love with the US Constitution and Bill of Rights. Do some research. Huffingting Post is NOT research.

Finally, religous bigotry is a crime and a sin. Crusade much?!?!

Pointing out differences in doctrine isn’t religious bigotry, neither is pointing out where said doctrine is heretical.

If someone was prancing around claiming to be a Mormon but spouting off beliefs that are divergent with a large portion of the core doctrines you know, would you confront him in his heresy (or “sin”) as it says to do in Leviticus? If you do, is that bigotry? Or simply following God’s command?

If you answer bigotry, then riddle me this: If, for instance, I had gone a few times to a Mormon church and the lay leader (or pastor or whatever you guys call him) says, in open forum, that Mormons are the only true Christian faith and starts listing examples of how the mainstream church is wrong, would that not also qualify as bigotry? If so, I think I know a Mormon lay leader you need to tell to stop being a religious bigot from his pulpit.

I’ll tell you this: When I hear someone who claims to be a Christian spouting Mormon teachings, I tend to confront him in accordance with Leviticus 19:17. Your doctrine is divergent with a large portion of Christian core doctrines and is, in my view, heresy.

You’re as close to Christianity as Islam is to Judaism. Islam has all the same cast of characters, but the teachings have been fundamentally changed. The only difference is, Mormons aren’t trying to kill people over the differences.

These posts are all over the place. A few “facts” for you:
      1. Mormons are devoutly patriotic and adhere to the precepts of the law of the land and the US Constitution. I do not know of another religion that places as much importance in the founding fathers and laws of the land as Mormons do. They believe that God’s hand was in the founding and start up of this nation.
      2. Harry Reid is not only Mormon but is very active in the faith. A member in good standing and practices the faith. Even though he is not in step with the mainstream member, the Church never tells a member how to practice politics or who to vote for.
      3. There are more than a few practicing Mormons in Congress on both sides of the aisle.

So, I doubt that Obama will use the religion as a tool in the election if Romney is the candidate. Harry Reid was instrumental in Obama running and winning the election. If Obama does use religion, it will be a very interesting thing to watch.

Mormons must believe (As other churches do) that you must be baptized to enter heaven. By going out of there way to baptize (Posthumously) they are “In there minds” insuring that Holocaust victims will enter heaven.

Replying to SnowKal, since the LDS concept of baptism for the dead involves a proxy baptism, and that it is considered valid only if the person that has passed on accepts it, why would anyone care what they were doing? The LDS church decided to buckle under pressure to stop (at least for the time being) baptizing holocaust victims, however that was simply a neighborly gesture. If they chose to continue doing it it would mean pretty much nothing, since their goal is strictrly honorable.

      @snowkal –

Maybe they should do a story on Paul teaching the doctrine of proxy baptisms for the dead – Paul declared in 1 Corinthians 15:29:

“Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?”

You see, we believe that EVERYONE is given the opportunity to accept or reject the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In order to fully do that, one MUST be “born again” and baptized “of water.” See John 3:1–10. God loves all his children, not just the ones who were lucky enough to live in a place and time where the Gospel was taught. Thus, if someone died without the chance to accept the gospel during their life, then they must be given the chance to be be baptized “of water” in order to enter the “Kingdom of God.” Therefore, you now understand why Paul taught the doctrine of people being “baptized for the dead.”

      See also John 5:25–29.

For you others out there, like Beck says, dig for the truth yourself. Look at people who got out of Mormonism and are now Christians. Sandra Tanner is a good start along with Michael Wilder who was very high up in the “church”.

@POLARIZED AMERICA – I’m happy to answer any question you have about my faith. Your question is a great question!

We simply believe that one must be baptized by someone with the proper authority, i.e. priesthood. John the Baptist held the Priesthood of Aaron (aka the Aaronic Priesthood) and was thus authorized to baptize. The fact that John the Baptist held a special authority is evidenced by the people of “Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the region round about Jordan” coming to him to be baptized (as opposed to everyone baptizing each other). See Matthew 3:5.

Therefore, to answer the heart of your question, we believe that the proper priesthoods can only be held by worthy members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Worthy members of our church are given the priesthood by the “laying on of hands.” The laying on of hands is a procedure used from the earliest times in the manner of blessing, conferring the Holy Ghost, and ordaining to the priesthood. See Gen. 48:14, 17; Num. 27:18, 23; Deut. 34:9; Matt. 9:18; Mark 10:13, 16; Luke 4:40; Acts 6:6; 8:14–17; 9:12, 17; 13:3; 19:1–7; 28:8; 1 Tim. 4:14; 5:22; 2 Tim. 1:6; Heb. 6:2; James 5:14–16.

Only worthy members can hold the proper priesthood to baptize (Aaronic or Melchizedek priesthoods) because, “no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.” Hebrews 5:4. Christ was a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek (the greater Priesthood). Hebrews 5:1

@AZTD1 – No, I was not replying to you. However, I’m happy to answer the basis of your argument.

So you believe that the best source of a topic is to go to someone who has left that organization? So would you have gone to Judas to ask about Christ? Would you go to Arlen Specter to ask about the Republican Party? Of course not. I do not believe the way I do because of man, but because of God. Thus, we can dismiss of that averment.

As for searching for the truth, I have and have found The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to be 100% perfect and true (our members are not perfect, but the the Church is).

I began by reading the entire Bible and Book of Mormon. I then pondered and prayed with a sincere heart. I’ve never had such a good feeling come over me, testifying that the Book of Mormon is another testament of Jesus Christ, a companion to the Bible. My favorite part of the Book of Mormon is found in 3 Nephi:11 when the Resurrected Christ appears to the people living on the American continent. Thereafter, I’ve continued to study and pray and the Holy Ghost has testified to me that the Joseph Smith was a true Prophet, that Thomas Monson is now the living Prophet and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is lead directly by Jesus Christ himself. The closer I’ve lived the teachings of this church, the closer I’ve come to our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. It has brought so much joy to my life. You too can come to know the truth through prayer

Sorry, the verses you mentioned say nothing about baptism with water or anything else. They do speak of your natural birth (water) and your spiritual birth, and Christ even explains both to Nicodemius. The second set of verses you quote have absolutely nothing to do with baptizing the dead. It has everything to do with Christ’s second coming, where those who died believing in him and those alive believing in him will be called up to meet with him in the clouds. Bottom line NO BAPTISM is mentioned, implied, or alluded to in the verses you sent everyone to read. Try again.

Sparky101, you are a prime example of someone teaching a doctrine other than the one Paul preached. Why was Jesus baptised if not to provide the example for all to follow? When he said follow me were those just idle words?

Jesus said “Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” John 3:5

Do you really think he was saying unless a man has a mother he cannot enter the kingdom of God? Was Jesus that trivial? I don’t think so.

Why did Jesus and John baptise other people in the water? And why did they need “much water”? Clearly part of being born again includes the physical act of being submersed in water and by the proper method and authority as P8riot explained.

      John 3
22 After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judæa; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.
23 And John also was baptizing in Ænon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.

Hi Joel, Christ is quite clear in his discussion with Nicodemus (read it slowly). He responds to Nicodemus question about how he could enter his mother’s womb for a second birth, and Jesus explains that he must be born of water (notice – not baptized) and born a second time of the Spirit. No, he wasn’t being simplistic, nor was I. I can’t believe you would ask me why Christ was baptized, when he told John in very clear terms (to meet all righteousness). Although priests were purified as part of their ritual entering the priesthood, Jesus did not need purification. He did it to fullfil all the requirements of coming into his ministry. Don’t stop at John 3:10, continue to 3:16. God tells you exactly what is needed to obtain everlasting life (and he didn’t simply forget to mention baptism, because it is not a requirement – think of the thief on the cross – baptized? no, yet entered paradise that very night). So, don’t go tossing around charges of false doctrine, read a bit more and a bit deeper. Also, I challenge you to point to any scripture that says Christ baptized anyone. Go ahead, I’ll wait.

In Ephesians 4:5 we read “One Lord, one faith one baptism”. Jesus Christ was our only Savior who taught one gospel and established one church. Since He founded His church, man has divided the gospel truth to reconcile man’s teachings into over 40 different Christian churches.. all teaching a different interpretation of his gospel and requiring a different baptism each time,…well, until the seventies and early eighties anyway.

Dividedwefail….you say Christians believe in the Bible…Then why are there 92 different interpretations in current publication? why was the Comma Johanneum added to the second generation Vulgate?…and then the King James (John 5:7-8)? Why of the original Codex Vaticanus were at least two dozen previously accepted books removed? Why do Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Assyrian, Roman Catholic and Protestant each define a Bible with varying new testament compilations? Why did The British and Foreign Bible Society 1826 feel they had the authority to remove th apocrypha? Why did The American Bible Society do so in 1880? Why did The Archbishop of Canterbury do so in 1885? If the Bible was inspired by God, who gave these men the right to alter the Bible? The Bible is riddled with missing scriptures and errors and yet you consider it infallable….and mock the Book of Mormon has something that was a magic con.

And some Protestants believe in a pre-Trib Rapture and some don’t. What’s my point? SO WHAT? As long as they believe that salvation comes by faith in the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ, they’re CHRISTIANS in my book, and that’s what Mormons believe. Yes, I have issues with some of their theology, as I do with that of Catholics, the Witnesses, and many other denominations. There is no other option for a minority to exert control over a majority. Their weapons are ethnic nepotism, courts, and the media. Who do you think is feeding this media frenzy?

Mormons believe in, and accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior – which the underlying fundamental principle to qualify someone as “Christian”. Yes, there are theological differences – and many, many great answers to the questions that you posed (all founded on scriptures from the Bible) – I would encourage you to seek out members of the LDS faith to have them answered. Let’s focus more on what we have in common – a faith in the Savior – rather than attempting to tear another’s faith apart because of something you may not have a clear understanding of. There are so many more threats and fronts to this country that we can unite on.

      @ Divided we Fail:
Where do you get this stuff from? I read Beck not as the source but more as entertainment. I also see that you always have to make a bunch silly comments every time anything about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints comes up. In particular, I find your undying interest in what kind of underwear that anyone is wearing kind of creepy.
Yes I am LDS. That being said, I will venture a guess that if you had a practicing LDS as a neighbor, you probably would not realize it unless you noticed that they went to church on most Sundays. You would notice that even though their kids wore much the same styles as the rest of the kids, their clothing would be a bit more modest. You wouldn’t see him on the porch smoking or a bunch of beer bottles in the trash by the street. The list of behaviors could go on and on and you would be hard pressed to find a problem. That is not to say that all Mormons are perfect, we do have our stinkers.

In general what I am saying is: We all have our ways of worshiping Jesus Christ and Our Heavenly Father. I have noticed that there are things that even the most observant evangelic Christian does that is in conflict with the Bible but my response is to work harder to live better myself. I find that those people who have this much venom towards an another group of people often know very little about the group

Christians are monotheism – not polytheism.
      - Christians believe in God, the Father; Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten of the Father; and the Holy Spirit. 3 Beings that make up the Trinity, or Godhead.

Christians do not believe their scripture came out of a magic hat
      - Neither do Mormons. The Book of Mormon is another witness of the divinity of Christ, and His teachings. It was written on golden plates, which were translated by Joseph Smith. Eye-witness accounts of these plates, and the translation of the characters/lettering from the plates have been recorded as true.

nor do they believe in magic underwear
      - Neither do Mormons. We read in the Bible that God made clothing for Adam and Eve, and that He prescribed special garments to be worn for Aaron and his sons to work in the Tabernacle.

Christians do not believe they evolve into a god like Jesus – even surpassing Him.
      - Neither do Mormons. Jesus is our Elder Brother; we are all spirit children of our Heavenly Father. Where Christ went, He went to prepare a place for us. The Father has given Christ everything, and we can have the same inheritance with Christ.

Christians do not believe there are 3 heavens and no hell.
      - Neither do Mormons. Jesus taught that there are many mansions in His Father’s kingdom. Hell is a special place reserved for those who reject Christ’s Gospel, and who do not repent of their sins.

Christians do not believe after they die they fly away and rule another planet in the Solar System as a god.
      - Neither do Mormons.

Christians believe in ONE BOOK OF GOD CALLED THE BIBLE.
      - The Bible is a collection of books that have been translated. The compilation of the Bible is said to have taken place when Emperor Constantine assumed theological control over the Church at that time.

It is blasphemy to believe in another.
      - It is not blasphemy to believe in more of the Word of God, so long as it IS the Word of God.

Christians do not believe that Mary wasn‘t a virgin
      - Neither do Mormons.

      Amen!

Beck even drew a line between Mormons and Jews today when describing how big of a sleight this was.

I had to laughed at that because this tremendous sleight to Mormonism is… (wait for it…) Levitical law (Lev. 15). Since, as well all know, Mormons claim to be the closest to first century Christianity (which the Church of Christ also claim to be… huh…) and since Jesus came to fulfill the Law, not change it, the Mormons should be doing this.

You read that right! In an odd twist, Axelrod is lying but if the Mormons actually did it, they would be more in line with God’s Law- and they’re crying religious bigotry because someone lied about them doing what the Jews were told to do in Leviticus, despite the fact that they repeatedly compare themselves to the Jews. Irony abounds.

Bottom line: Axelrod is a tremendous douche and is lying about this, but watching the Mormon outrage over this is simply hilarious.

I agree with about 90% of your take there.

Here’s where we diverge: Claiming bigotry about someone pointing the places where Mormonism differs from Christianity is a heck of a lot like the Left saying calling someone a Socialist is an ad hominem attack. DividedWeFail was doing a simple compare-and-contrast of Christian and Mormon doctrines. It’s not a slam if the facts are borne out.

Your religion (which, yes, I believe is an extra-biblically based heretical cult) notwithstanding, you’re right in saying that we need to unite. As Beck repeatedly says, I can stand with an Atheist, as long as we share common principles. We clearly share that.

Let me quote him one more time: “I cannot wait to Romney’s religion to [sic] be ridiculed by the left.” There are obviously some serious emotional and mental issues for anyone to feel that way about ANY religion – especially a peaceful religion such as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The question I have for you is what does make one a Christian? The answer is:
1 Believing that Jesus Christ was sent from God to be the savior of ALL mankind
2 Believing that Jesus was born of the Virgin birth. How she was impregnated, only God truly knows
3 Believing that Jesus lived a perfect and sinless life
4 Believing that Jesus did all the miracles and healing as the Bible teaches
5 Believing that Jesus came to this Earth to pay the price, the atonement, for each of our sins. Past, present and future. Why? To pave the way for all of us to get back our Father in Heaven
6 Believing that after Jesus died on the cross, he rose on the third day
7 After Jesus time on Earth was complete, he ascended into heaven
I believe all those things, and so do all my Mormon brothers and sisters. Do you? I hope you do! Certainly, you and I both believe other things w/in our own churches doctrine, but none of those other things will get us back to our Heavenly Father. BTW, I spent 30 years in Baptist and Non-denominational churches before converting to the LDS Church. I could not be happier in my church and I wish all the joy available to you in yours. Find the similarity, nit the differences. We will all be better off when you do.

Look what they’ve done to poor Michelle Bachmann, Palin and now Santorum. It‘s just that they are desperate and can’t go on Obama’s horrible record so they resort to all others and hope they will “add up” or somehow help – have nothing to lose to try.
They are all pathetic attempts that they foolishly think will really work – like the “war on women” that has backfired. Generally speaking, we women could care less about this stupid contraception deal.
I have been praying and really feel like every evil strategy will backfire and only help bring them down & help us win. Everything that is in their “old” playbook that has worked in the past, won’t this time around – or ever again (for a couple of decades anyway).

is LACK of GOD. Progressives who don’t believe in GOD have this mistaken idea that they have to save the world…that everyone has to be the same…that only by collective salvation are we saved.

THEY have no CONCEPT of our one-on-one relationship to OUR GOD and that each of us have struggles and things that happen to teach us. OUR GOD isn’t a DICTATOR. OUR GOD doesn’t force us to worship Him. OUR GOD invites us to COME TO HIM on our own…the only way a real relationship can be built. Emanuel’s father was a member of the Jewish terrorist group, Irgun. Emanuel, who never served America’s armed forces, did fly over to serve the armed forces of Israel… now, you tell me where his true loyalties are.

Axelrod also did not get along well with Emanuel’s replacement as COS, Daley (nor did Plouffe). This, in part, is why Daley was dumped. Daley was replaced with Lew. Emanuel, Lew, Axelrod, and Plouffe are all ethnic Jews, 1.7% of our population. What are the odds?

And this is news worthy according to Axelrod? Okay, so during baptism you are dunked in a tub of water so do many in a Christian churches. If the women is on her period I am not sure I would want them dunked in the water either. According to the Bible when a women is on her period she is considered “unclean” also not all women use tampons; I would not want to taint the water for a baptism for this very reason. Why can’t they wait 5 to 7 days? I am not even sure I’d want to be dunked if this was not the case, after dunking 10 or so people that water better be chlorinated holy water.

Now if it was for pouring water over the head while they lean over a tub of water, that is a different story.

That said, like I mentioned, no one ever brought it up. This is just one of many ways they try to take something we consider sacred and beautifull and make it sound like it something it’s not. The one thing I can say about being in the temple, it is without a doubt the most peacefull, soul inspiring place on earth, truely a bit of Heaven. That said, it was something that was always explained in a respectful, non-embarrassing way, away from the boys. Furthermore, those girls were certainly allowed to put on the white clothes and participate in the confirmations. Maybe there are finally some high powered people that want Mitt to win because they need to make some more money andknow that Obama will continue to drive the economy into the sewer. Sooner or later even teh wall street liberals and teh Hollywood liberals will have to see that a continued depression/rescession hurts their livlihoods too. When no one goes to the movies or buy your products, you run out of money ssoner or later.

Oh, and I googled ELI PUBLISHING and F8 LLC and came with the story about two guys from the MLM firm Nuskin who set up shell companies in order to donate to Romney. All perfectly legal and with SEC and federal election guidelines. Try to make soething out of it if you can, but there’s nothing there.

Or maybe Axelrod wants to give the impression he is afraid of Mormons or that they run things and so he quickly deleted it.

That would fit the narrative. He had to remove it because the Mormon hit squads were after him!

David Axelrod is another progressive ethnic Jew. I don’t know how many more examples people have to witness in order to see that this fact is not based around the false concept of antisemitism. Jews, as a group, tend to be anti-Christian because they oppose the non-Jewish Christian culture, which is also why they are often viewed as anti-American… a predominately Christian culture.
