Where Do Scientists Stand on That ‘God Particle’ Project? Hang On…

Researchers say they may be close to answering one of the world’s biggest mysteries.

Higgs Boson God Particle Project

The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) recently announced that researchers will know whether the Higgs boson particle, commonly referred to as the God particle, actually exists by the end of 2012. Some say the particle could be responsible for the creation of the planets and stars and that it may be the key to understanding the Big Bang.

Rolf Heuer, director-general of the CERN research center told the International Business Times, “We can settle this Shakespearean question — to be or not to be — by the end of next year.”

According to an International Business Times’ report, a recent experiment that involved shooting streams of protons through the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) obtained some atypical results that have led to a resurgence of confidence in those who have searched relentlessly for answers. For those of us who don’t know, the LHC is a large particle accelerator that sits deep in a tunnel beneath the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva. Experimenters say the findings are exciting.

Higgs Boson God Particle Project

CERN’s Director for Research and Scientific Computing, Sergio Bertolucci, told the International Business Times that any discovery- either the confirmation of the particle’s existence or otherwise, would be good news for the world. Both results, he said, would push the research forward.

It may seem like a big question to answer in a little less than a year and a half, but with the Worldwide LHC grid’s ability to process 200,000 physics analyses simultaneously, some think the work may get done.

Still for a mystery that’s captured the imagination of scientists and the international community for years, the December 2012 deadline is coming quickly.

Back in April, we reported that scientists may have finally found the “God particle” — the hypothetical Higgs boson at the center of life. Back then, by using a giant atom smasher, there were rumors of a major discovery. Scientists scrambled to duplicate the experiment to get confirmation. But as of June, no confirmation of the claims ever came.

LCH researchers’ most recent claims sound a lot like previous reports and hopes in April, but experimenters are staying confident. “While it’s still too early for the biggest discoveries, the experiments are already accumulating interesting results,” Heuer said in a press release from CERN. Researchers released their most recent findings at a conference in Grenoble, France late last week and held a press conference on Monday.

The Higgs boson particle is named after British theoretical physicist, Peter Higgs, who suggested the existence of the particle in the 1960s as part of his research into the origin of mass. It gained noteriety when Nobel-prize physicist Leon M. Lederman and science writer Dick Teresi wrote a book called The God Particle: If the Universe Is the Answer, What is the Question? The book looks into the history of particle physics and the God particle.

I don’t know, this just seems like a bad use of this technology, trying to prove the big bang. Like all the time wasted with the Hubble looking at empty pieces of space trying to prove the big bang, when the time could have much better been spent actually viewing objects that might teach us something valuable.

Go outside and start your car, then realize the starter in your car is part of the SPACE PROGRAM! Its design was from the first trip to the Moon. Thats why we dont change starters on cars every 2 years any more. There is too much spin off technology that goes along the way to lose these things.

Another question is, will anyone outside the field remotely understand the theories involved and what is “discovered”? What proof will the layman be able to see that there is anything real to this? How will he know that these scientists know what they are talking about? Without practical proofs and explanations this will all just seem as relevant as a bunch of nerds arguing whether zombies ate brains to stay “alive” or just because they were compelled to.

This particular research/use of the LHC won’t lead to anything like better starters, tang, better paint, fillings, insulation, pretty much anything valuable for mankind, it’s basically pandering to a bunch of liberals who think they can prove there is no god. Very much a waste of really valuable resources, like the wasted time with Hubble we will never get back.

@Ranger- Is anybody stopping you from asking why? Just because we MAY choose not to fund TRILLIONS of dollars into a particular program, does not mean we are not doing basic research. Look at all the work being done by BIOTECH companies, by MONSANTO and others on genetically modifiying the food supply. SEE there’s research going on. Look at IBM and their new high-speed memory. MOST research is now CORPORATE funded… as it SHOULD be, I contend. You don’t HONESTLY believe we would never have electronic ignition without NASA do you? Sure, it may have taken longer, but, with electronics and American engineering being what they are, we WOULD have developed it. Just because the engineer is not being PAID with a NASA paycheck does not mean he is not out there inventing, engineering, and designing.

Space exploration, for the most part, has no profit potential apart from putting communications satellites in orbit. Private companies would have no reason to make the discoveries that NASA has made possible.

And the Hubble telescope had a few false starts, but it actually helped give enormous insights into the nature of the universe. All that looking at “empty space” helped to show that the universe is expanding at a rate consistent with The Big Bang event.

Our most powerful gift from “god”, is the power of reason, and a universe that operates through rational physical laws which enables us to actually deduce and UNDERSTAND the universe we live in. Physicists and other scientists work to figure out how it works, then engineers use that understanding to build things we use everyday, like space shuttles, and electronic calculators. See, if those “theories” aren’t correct, then those things the engineers make for us wouldn’t work…right??

Your post seems to imply that changing theories is a bad thing. Science is always looking for new answers and when the old ones don’t fit, we try to find new ones.
You are absolutely correct, theories about the Higgs Boson particle will change over time as we learn more. That is what SCIENCE has always done and will always do. It is all about postulating theories and then testing those theories. If they are proven wrong then we begin with a new theory. If it is “proven” right then we stick with it. Later modifications to the theory are often made because that is what science is– a search for the truth, not blind obedience to a belief with NO evidence to back it up. It is clear you don’t understand science if you really think that changing theories is proof scientists are wrong

@dogdr. that is exactly the problem with the theory of evolution and why those who believe in God want evolution to stop being taught in schools…there is NO evidence for it. We are constantly told there is mountains of evidence for it, but what they present is usually evidence for natural selection or micro-evolution which is not the species changing macro evolution that religion objects to. For that evolution there is no evidece. We have never witnessed one species change into another species. We have never found any transitional species….and we cannot even figure out how on a genetic level how its even possible. That is blind faith my friend, not science. Scientists are looking for “God” in a particle? Truthfully, what they are actually looking for is an alternative to God. Men tend to find what they look for. If they don’t find exactly what they want, they will keep on looking or be forced to “redefine” what they do find to support their foregone conclusion, like global warming “scientists” did. Whatever they “find” will be hailed as the ultimate truth–if it fulfills their expectations. Their conclusions will be overly complex in detail, but basically simplistic in general.

    Wait and see.

Keep in mind though that creation scientists still use the information that is found. Atheistic scientists assume the non-existence of God, the creation scientists assume the existence of God. The sad part is science is supposed to be unassuming. The truth is we always let our bias skew the interpretation of the facts.

You are quite correct in that they will always find what they want, be it the age of the rock surrounding dinosaur bones or the appearance of a new fossil with slightly different characteristics than others of the same kind. But it is their game, it matters not. They can try and disprove God but we know the truth. We can benefit from their work, they have proven evolution is impossible and that there was a global flood. They have proven many more things that agree with the Bible. The facts are on the side of God. They ignore their own findings at their own peril. :-)

True enough; both sides in the creation/evolution debate tend to twist findings to fit their preconceived notions. True science follows the data to the conclusion rather than dragging the data to one side or the other. The sad part is that when you do that, if you are right it is purely by accident. Yes, the truth has no agenda… The fact is to not believe in god or a creator is a depressing thought, yet that does not matter to truth.. To say “we know the truth” as troll did on god is just as ridiculous as a scientist saying we know the truth to the origins of life… If you really abide by the definition of truth, you acknowledge we don’t know if god exists or not.. The bible nor anything that has happened since is not proof of gods existence and anyone who thinks otherwise is delusional… You can make up any biblical story you want and find evidence to support it in real life…but that doesn’t answer the question.. The “TRUTH” is “we don’t know, and may never ever know” Scientific inquiry into biblical happenings have all shown no evidence… Evidence of a flood is not a surprise or proof!!!

Cesium, you are correct in a scientific way, but you are missing the boat in another.

We know God through a personal relationship with His son through the Holy Spirit. We cannot prove “what” He is, only that He exists and works in us. We know this because we have experienced it. It is much like if you did not know what an electric eel was. I tell you that this eel can shock you with electricity. “Impossible!” you say, he is not plugged into anything. In your experience you have never encountered anything like an electric eel. I have. I tell you that I have definitely been shocked by this eel. Now, this is where we stand now on the issue of God. It is up to you to experience God for yourself. All who have will tell you that He is real, there is no doubt. Can we “prove” this to you without you actually experiencing it yourself? Probably not…But it is easy to experience this relationship. Just reach out to Him. Recognize that you are a sinner and that Jesus is your only salvation. Submit to Him, offer Him your life. You CAN know God exists for a fact. Science is a useful tool, and is good at measuring tangible things. But it is not the last word in life. Many things are beyond science. If you are truly honest with yourself you will recognize this.

Wasting billions upon billions of dollars?? Without research projects like this thousands of people would be out of work. Not only the scientists at the forefront of the technology but everyone at the companies that produce the components used for the projects. I should know, I am a mechanical designer at a company that makes parts for particle accelerators. 2 years of searching for a job in my field of study and they were the only company to take a risk on someone with no on the job experience. I am now gainfully employed and giving back to my local community and wouldn’t trade my job for anything. The science is amazing and knowing I am working on projects at the forefront of scientific research is amazing.

Without research projects we will never be able to propel ourselves into the future.

Nobody is claiming that the God particle is God, what they are claiming is that it is what gives physical matter its physicalness, so to speak. It is the theoretical particle that gives mass mass and makes matter matter. It is not in any way supposed to change your view on God, its just a nick-name because it is the end-all-be-all of subatomic particles…

You are correct. They still do not know why matter holds together but I do.
They should pay me the billions I would save them a lot of time.
The Bile says God holds all thing together!
It also says he stretches out the heavens long before the world knew we live in an expanding universe.
The bible also said long before we “discovered” the earth was NOT flat but round….. the earth is a sphere and sits on nothing! There is more MUCH MUCH MORE!
They should read it then look at their “science”
I do understand they are not looking for “god” here but hey are….they want to know how we got here…. I could save them billions just give me millions the answer is the God of the Bible made all your eyeballs have EVER seen! How cool is that!

My thought, too. Did anyone read Angels & Demons by Dan Brown. That’s what the whole story was based on-the God particle, which was anti-matter. The movie didn’t even go there.
And I was thinking, “so that’s how the world ends, they create anti-matter and it destoys the world.” Silly, I know.

lol. I find it so funny when scientist think they have the answer to the question of existence. It happens over and over, and every time the “answer” results in exponentially more questions.

Besides, the real answer isn’t politically correct. They are all running around basically trying to DISPROVE the existence of God. If they ever find the answer – that God does exist – they will deny it, just as “global cooling” (from the 1970′s environmentalist wackos) to “global warming” to “global climate change.” Fact is that earth‘s temperature has varied widely since it’s creation, long before we “evolved” from an amoeba.

eh, I seriously wish them luck. They are seeking information and that is always a good thing. Who knows what we may discover about ourselves and our universe. I am all for science and research. It is the inability they have to keep it in context with our Creator that bugs me.

Theres a little Bit of God in everyone.. thats the memory bank, the conscience, the dream sequence, and ability to reason and learn. anyone who denies this exists, and denies God exists, is just very much misguided, and I would bet, 5 mins before they die, they pray for forgiveness for NOT believing, and hope to God, he does.

C’mon….Really? Have you no imagination? No yearning for knowing? Was the entire space program from it’s inception to target the moon a waste?. Perhaps the Hubble Telescope a piece of expensive garbage? Is the James Webb Space Telescope mere folly we are throwing away money on?

The LHC is a large particle accelerator that sits deep in a tunnel beneath the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva. European taxes paid for most of this research I’m guessing. Good for them on this one.

McCain is a progressive and I disagree with him on just about everything ran on except one he offered $300,000,000 to the scientist would could event a 20-30 years rechargable battery SEE THAT’S A GOD PARTICLE that would shoot the renewable energy market into drive.
      And Ulyssep
The space program cost trillion upon trillions for nominal gains so yeah in the long haul a huge waste.Considering the most prominant space achievement are all at sub-orbit of the planet. Going to the moon was a total waste…..What were they thinking of selling log cabins on the damn thing. No until we can cure what ill the human spirit I don’t think we have anything to offer intelligent life on other planets.

Do you realize the number of items that you use everyday, that are a direct result of NASA engineering and innovation? The insoles of your shoes, your memory foam mattress, scratch resistant eyeglass lenses, long distance telecommunications, water filters, smoke detectors, cordless power tools, ear thermometers, CAT scan machines, kidney dialysis, exercise equipment, etc., etc., etc.
