Where Does Your State Fall on the CDC‘s Latest ’Fat Map’?

The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention has released data from its latest survey tracking obesity statistics with participants self-reporting their body weight. It has curated this information into a color-coded map, which i09 calls a “fat map.”

Overall, more than a third of adults are obese but rates vary by state. The latest figures are based on a 2011 telephone survey that asked adults their height and weight. For the first time, households with only cell phones were included.

Here’s some of the regional distribution according to the report.

  • By state, obesity prevalence ranged from 20.7% in Colorado to 34.9% in Mississippi in 2011. No state had a prevalence of obesity less than 20%. 39 states had a prevalence of 25% or more; 12 of these states had a prevalence of 30% or more: Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, and West Virginia.
  • The South had the highest prevalence of obesity (29.5%), followed by the Midwest (29.0%), the Northeast (25.3%) and the West (24.3%).

These newer figures, according to the report, establish a new baseline for obesity rates as there were changes to the exclusion criteria. For this reason, the statistics cannot be compared to obesity data from previous years.

The CDC still includes obesity data over the last few decades for “historical information only” on its website. It even has an animated map to show the changes in obesity statistics from 1985 through 2010. Below are screenshots from a few of the years showing the changes in the country’s body mass index.

      You are right. I vacationed one time in Hawaii and visited the local HD shop to buy a shirt and they had no large size shirts on the rack, so I asked if they had any large in the shirt I wanted and what I was told was “most men around this area do not wear anything smaller than a XX so we don’t stock large” really!

      Have you ever actually spent time in Hawai’i? Most people in Hawai‘i aren’t obese like you see in the states. Generally Polynesians are just thick-boned people so they look bigger than the average American. On top of that the men have more muscle than the average American male. Hawai‘i would be lower in obesity percentages if it wasn’t for the women there. It‘s the women that you’ll more likely see overweight in Hawai’i.

      If it wasn’t for the micro-breweries popping up on every street corner (not a bad thing BTW), Co. would be under 20%. Discount the FR and you end up with a lot of thin, in-shape people.

      85 was also the year they started adding high fructose corn syrup to sodas instead of cane sugar. If you look at the per capita consumption of soft drinks, it is higher in those red states than anywhere else. People drink it instead of water all day long. Sick, really.

      (Do I think things need to be banned, no…but parents need to wake up and be responsible for their children and to provide a better example of how to eat/drink/be healthy. If they don’t, the cycle will never be broken. People need to learn to cook again–with real, unprocessed ingredients. It is a matter of survival.)

      @Hause

      Real the full article here http://naturalhealthdossier.com/2011/04/the-economics-of-obesity-why-are-poor-people-fat/

      Professor and obesity researcher, Dr. Adam Drewnowski set out to determine why income is the most reliable predictor of obesity in the U.S. To do this, he took a hypothetical dollar to the grocery store. His goal was to purchase as many calories as possible per dollar.

      What he found is that he could buy well over 1,000 calories of cookies or potato chips. But his dollar would only buy 250 calories of carrots. He could buy almost 900 calories of soda… but only 170 calories of orange juice.

      If you are poor and hungry, you are obviously going to buy the cheapest calories you can find. And in today’s world, the cheapest calories come from junk foods – whether those foods are found at the grocery store, the gas station, or in the fast food restaurant, conveniently located just down the street.

      I vote ‘Quoted for TRUTH’ on Anonymous. At any given time in Ohio, I estimate roughly one of three legal handicapped parkings is simply a fatarse that would otherwise be hale and not need the handicap spots.

      Still and all, I prefer Ohio women over my prior residence of Chicago. Good Gods, do I prefer Ohio women over Chicago.
