‘Where’s Your Brains Coming From?’: British Game Show Puts on Awesome Display of Game Theory

A clever British gameshow called “Golden Balls” invites contestants to play a modified version of the “prisoner’s dilemma.”

In the show, two contestants must decide whether they will either split or steal a certain amount of money, by selecting one of two “golden balls” that only they can see, which either reads “split” or “steal.”

If they both choose “split,” they split the money.  However, if only one chooses to split, and the other opts for “steal,“ the contestant who chooses ”steal” gets the entire pot.  And if they both opt for “steal”, they both go home empty-handed.

The duo have thirty seconds to discuss their decision, but more often than not they both get greedy and walk home with nothing.  It can be a terrible sight to behold, especially when they absolutely both could have won!

Watch the clip below to see the how one clever contestant manipulated “game theory” to convince the other guy to split the money– by persuading him he was going to steal:

What in the world was the last sentence Ibrahim said? I listened to it a bunch of times and couldn’t make it out. Sounds like: “with the money I’ve won, I think I’ll re-sprain my york.”

You do realize that was a phrase that was used in the clip… by a person from Britain.

Sounds like he’d chosen unequivocally to choose split and then ran a mind game to keep the other guy from choosing steal.

LOL Yeah that was amazing. He had me convinced he was going to steal. I think I have read about the aspect of game theory he employed there but I can’t remember what it would be called. Anyone know?

That was interesting. It seems like government does the same thing in that they convince people the government is going to steal it anyways, and so the population chooses “split”, and it is reinforced by having people calculate their own taxes – which would be like Abraham and Nick’s dialog. I guess this game isn’t so original after-all, except for it to be like the government – Nick would have to play the game with Abraham’s money.

Now if Nick, and Abraham would have both chose “Steal” then neither would have gotten any further wealth – which is exactly why government money is worthless, because politicians steal from stolen money, and corruption is rampant – which negates the value of money. I wonder how many gold certificates have been sold for gold that doesn’t exist?

Moreover, if Nick and Abraham both would have chosen “Steal” then the money would have remained where it was at. Therefore because Governments and their politicians/ leaders have all chosen “Steal”, then the wealth remains with “The People”, and sleepy-heads should realize that.

It’s easy if you want the prize, just say split, if the othet person said steal, you still win by knowing you have taken the “High Ground”
Robots can be programmed to do this easy.
I wonder how Angels would do?

If everything and everyone, are made from the same elements that
exist through out the universe, than what is the difference between
some dude and a rock? What is the difference between people?
What is the difference between cultures? What can move a mountain?
      Perhaps it’s simply vibrations…

      Your answer says it all!

I think an Angel wouldn‘t play Caesar’s game, but if so would have chosen split even if they knew the other was choosing steal. But if you’re an Angel, why play at all, since an Angel‘s investment is in 1000’s of years to come?

Obama says ” just give me your money. I can spend it better than you! Look where I went to school! I mean, come on, its about fairness. I have more money than you so obviously I know how to use it better than you or I wouldn’t have it”.

do you A: give him your money, or B: give him the finger?
