Which Cities Are Leaving ‘Occupy Wall Street’ Protesters Alone?

Somes Cities Tone Down Pressure Occupy Wall Street Protesters

(AP)While more U.S. cities are resorting to force to break up the Wall Street protests, many others — Philadelphia, New York, Minneapolis and Portland, Ore., among them — are content to let the demonstrations go on for now.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, for example, said Friday that the several hundred protesters sleeping in Zuccotti Park, the unofficial headquarters of the movement that began in mid-September, can stay as long as they obey the law.

“I can’t talk about other cities,” he said. “Our responsibilities are protect your rights and your safety. And I think we’re trying to do that. We’re trying to act responsibly and safely.”

Still, the city made life a lot harder for the demonstrators: Fire inspectors seized a dozen cans of gasoline and six generators that powered lights, cooking equipment and laptops, saying they were safety hazards.

In the span of three days this week, police broke up protest encampments in Oakland, Calif., Atlanta and, early Friday, San Diego and Nashville, Tenn.

State troopers in Nashville cracked down after authorities imposed a curfew on the protest. Twenty-nine people were arrested and later released after a judge said the demonstrators were not given enough time to comply with the brand-new rule. They received citations for trespassing instead.

Fifty-one people were arrested in San Diego, where authorities descended on a three-week-old encampment at the Civic Center Plaza and Children’s Park and removed tents, canopies, tables and other furniture.

Officials there cited numerous complaints about human and animal feces, urination, drug use and littering, as well as damage to city property — problems reported in many other cities as well. Police said the San Diego demonstrators can return without their tents and other belongings after the park is cleaned up.

Earlier this week, in the most serious clashes of the movement so far, more than 100 people were arrested and a 24-year-old Iraq War veteran suffered a skull fracture after Oakland police armed with tear gas and bean bag rounds broke up a 15-day encampment and repulsed an effort by demonstrators to retake the site.

But other cities have rejected aggressive tactics, at least so far, some of them because they want to avoid the violence seen in Oakland or, as some have speculated, because they are expecting the protests to wither anyway with the onset of cold weather.

Officials are watching the encampments for health and safety problems but say that protesters exercising their rights to free speech and assembly will be allowed to stay as long as they are peaceful and law-abiding.

“We‘re accommodating a free speech event as part of normal business and we’re going to continue to enforce city rules,” said Aaron Pickus, a spokesman for the mayor of Seattle, where about 40 protesters are camping at City Hall. “They have the right to peacefully assemble. Ultimately what the mayor is doing is strike a balance.”

Authorities have similarly taken a largely hands-off approach in Portland, Ore., where about 300 demonstrators are occupying two parks downtown; Memphis, Tenn., where the number of protesters near City Hall has ranged from about a dozen to about 100; and in Salt Lake City, where activists actually held a vigil outside police headquarters this week to thank the department for not using force against them.

In the nation’s capital, U.S. Park Police distributed fliers this week at two encampments totaling more than 150 tents near the White House. And while the fliers listed the park service regulations that protesters were violating, including a ban on camping, a park police spokesman said the notices should not be considered warnings.

In Providence, R.I., Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare said the protesters will not be forcibly removed even after the Sunday afternoon deadline he set for them. He said he intends to seek their ouster by way of court action, something that could take several weeks.

“When you see police having to quell disturbances with tear gas or other means, it‘s not what the police want and it’s not what we want to see in our society,” Pare said.

Similarly, in London, church and local government authorities are going to court to evict protesters camped outside St. Paul’s Cathedral — though officials acknowledged Friday it could take weeks or months to get an order to remove the tent city.

Several hundred protesters against economic inequality and corporate excesses have been camped outside the building since Oct. 15. On Oct. 21 cathedral officials shut the church, saying the campsite represented a health and safety hazard.

It was the first time the 300-year-old church, one of London’s best-known buildings, had closed since German planes bombed the city during World War II.

In Minneapolis, where dozens have been sleeping overnight on a government plaza between a county building and City Hall, the three-week-old occupation has been far tamer than those in other cities, with only a few arrests.

Sheriff Rich Stanek has made it a practice to meet with protesters daily to talk about their issues and the day ahead, and he has refused to engage what he called “the 1 percent” who want to cause trouble.

“We decided that’s not the tactic we want to take. Doing that sometimes requires biting your tongue,” he said. He added: “Some people have said that‘s ’Minnesota nice.‘ It’s a balance.”

However, a solid outbreak of dysentery or cholera would have a serious impact. Usually, the Health Department has to trace it back to the source of origin. I can’t believe these people are so uncivilized as to urinate and defecate in the park area. I guess this is how they want to live.

      @ OLEFROMMN,

What makes me better then the protestors you ask? Well, I believe in the Constitution. I also believe that traitors and seditionists should be punished, as in shooting squads. If you are preaching the abolishment of the Constitution, as these OWS people are doing, you deserve the death of a traitor.

      Sedition:

Our Founding Fathers and the Sedition Act of 1798:

      http://www.constitution.org/rf/sedition_1798.htm

      Treason:

Article III, Section 3 – Treason

Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court.

The Congress shall have power to declare the Punishment of Treason, but no Attainder of Treason shall work Corruption of Blood, or Forfeiture except during the Life of the Person attainted.

Yes, I’m better than they are (the OWS). I love my country, I don’t collect welfare and handouts (which is a violation of the “Thou shalt not steal; and Thou shalt not covet verses of the Torah.)

I believe in the rule of law, as the U.S. Constitution being the supreme law of the land. You want to take away my Constitution? That is sedition.

However making a point to enlighten the press that while you as a citizen have the right to PEACEABLY ASSEMBLE(those are the key words) to petition for redress of grievances that does not include the right to graffiti public & private property ,vandalize or otherwise damage public/private property,it does not give you the right to tamper with the wiring of public space lighting to steal electricity to power your electric space heater in your squatters tent creating an electrocution & fire hazard .

It is no surprise that the cities turning a blind eye to this group of misfits are some of the most liberal cities across the land. Sheriff Stanek’s opinion is the very reason I moved out of Hennepin County. They cater to the cart riders and punish the cart pullers.

I had actually called the HCSD and asked why I was unable to peacefully enjoy a picnic at that “park” with my family because these verbal terrorists (didn’t use that strong of language in my call) were making that an impossibility. The dispatcher was the rudest person I have ever talked to. She made me feel like the suspect and simply blew off any concerns I had. When she asked if I wanted a Sgt. to call me, I simply stated “no thanks, they have more important issues to deal with”.

Mayor Bloomberg: How considerate of you, on behalf of all taxpayers, to spend millions of dollars to indefinitely protect the rights and safety of the genuine and not-so-genuine rioters/protestors in NYC. I think, however, you might have overlooked the fact that a great majority of those rioters/protesters are not residents of New York City. In fact, I suspect you will find a significant number of illegal aliens amongst the tent cities. I’d lay you odds there are many travelers ad vacationers seeing how they can visit NYC and avoid paying the exhorbitant hotel rates. Of course they‘d have to receive a permit from the demonstrators’ self-developed Communist Governing Council to be assigned a space for their tent.

I think all these rioters/protesters around the U.S. should just go ahead on now and move into one of the Star Communities being prepared as residential agglomerations in accordance with the U.N.’s Agenda-21. Will save a lot of time and effort down the road. Of course, as Mayor of New York City, you already have been working to prepare the city as a Star Community/residential agglomeration.

The coming financial storm is the fault of present and past politicians who have sold Americans down the river for the sake of saving thier jobs as elected officials. The same folks (Democrats supporting these occupiers) will be the first ones sent to the re-education camps if the radicals get control.

I personally believe that there are enough good Americans out there to prevent the radicals from getting control; however, our situation will still get pretty bad. That in and of itself will be enough to cleanse alot of the corruption from Washington DC.

Question: If these guys are going to “occupy” these city neighborhoods , how will this affect their voter registration for the 2012 election ?

They ought to put laws in place that they can enforce if they don’t have any yet, and enforce the ones they have. I still say the owners of Zuccotti park should just get a trespass warrant against all the occupiers on their land. It could be so simple to fix. Require a permit for anyone to camp, only issue 25 a day and require time for cleaning in between permits. Aren’t there laws against defecating and urinating in public? They should at least require them to pick up and dispose of waste properly! We, dog owners are fined if we don’t pick up after our pets. If they have the laws already, they need to enforce them!

The owner of Zucchini Park is one of O‘Blamer’s biggest supporters and must have the IQ of a Zucchini.

Enforce the existing laws? Heck no. The Obama Left probably wants to install a new layer of “regulars” to ..a… a…. regulate. ( Just more of his “job creation” – out of the tax payer’s pocket !)

I just love being bullied by the union-backed minority who get bill taxpayers for their Endless Camp-Ins. Talk about “lobbying !“ Just more of that ”social justice” which seems to be infecting our youth.

They are NOT bothering with permits or insurance or anything else that the TEA Party was required to buy .. now I understand some TEA Party Organizations are going to ask for refunds of what was paid to their cities. Fair is fair and if OWS does not need them … then why should the TEA Party. I understand one group has asked a city for a refund of $80,000. Let the lawsuits begin.

You’re right. No comparison whatsoever. The Tea Party and the Occupiers are held to entirely different standards, given entirely different coverage, and treated differently by government officials.

In Richmond, VA the Tea Party has sent the Mayor (who went down and met with the occupiers there saying he could relate to what they were doing) an invoice for roughly $10,000. If they refuse to pay they have lawyers on stand by.

@Catb — indeed and this is due to the administration, I can imagine the warnings these state and city governmors and mayors are receiving to “pull the line or get slammed down.” As you stated, the Tea Party groups followed the law, and were demonized by the media — these groups are in clear violation in many areas and nothing is being done.

What will happen when the next group of protesters decide to use lethal force against the police and are responded with in kind?

I say let the OWS protesters continue costing those cities tax-payer funds and let the Dems. continue to support them, let them be supported by SEIU and Moveon.org, Joy Behar, Whoopi and President Ogh! Bummer….they will pay Nov. 2012.

Interesting development: Use the same tactics the Left uses – plug up the courts and drown the tax payer in endless “free speech ” expenses . Good to expose the ridiculous comparison to the Tea Party ( who went home after they cleaned up !) and to expose the favoritism being shown to the Occupiers ( who have apparently relocated to new neighborhoods. and do not clean up ) who are being allowed to be “working around ” ( where did I just hear that phrase ??) the laws and the local regulations ..

That was the first I’d heard of Tea Party doing something about this, but I checked out the articles and yes, folks, it’s true. The Richmond, Virginia Tea Party is claiming that the protesters are using the park without permits and other restrictions that the Tea Party had to abide by and which cost the Tea Party about $10,000. And now, the Tea Party wants their money back. Ain’t life grand???
