Which GOP Senator Opposes Defunding Planned Parenthood?

Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski has stepped forward as the first Republican senator to oppose the House GOP’s attempts to defund abortion provider Planned Parenthood.

In a letter to Senate Appropriations Committee chair Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii, and vice chair Thad Cochran, R-Miss., Murkowski voiced her support for Planned Parenthood, an organization she said “provides services to those in need.”
“I ask you to consider these programs going forward to determine if there is room for allowing continued funding,” she wrote.
Additionally, an email to one of her constituents expanded on her position and took shots at the House GOP’s attempts to end funding for Title X, a federal program dedicated to reproductive health issues.
“I do believe that Planned Parenthood provides vital services to those in need and disagree with its funding cuts contained in the H.R. 1 package,” she wrote in the email obtained by Politico.
“From 2002-2008, Planned Parenthood received $342 million in federal taxpayer money through Title X funding alone. With these funds, Planned Parenthood has provided women throughout the U.S. with important family planning and contraceptive services as well as screening for breast and cervical cancers for low-income women. I believe it is important that Title X organizations continue to receive funding. In Alaska, this includes five centers — two health department clinics, two Planned Parenthood clinics in Sitka and Soldotna and one independent clinic.”
So far, Senate GOP leaders have not guaranteed that defunding Planned Parenthood would be a “non-negotiable” item in their budget discussions with Democrats.

Folks like her will lie, cheat, do whatever necessary to win. I don’t think she represents Repubs or Dems, or care what anyone thinks.. long as she fulfills what she perceives as her God-given right to public office. But I don’t really blame the Alaska Republicans… I believe the write-in nonsense was a way to steal the election, though sadly we’ll never know.

For many blacks who would like to escape this kinds of slavery, they are ostracized for wanting to act white,talk white and many give in and get back in “their place”
It’s ironic so many blacks wants to hold other blacks back. The majority have become comfortable on their white massa’s plantations. Where is your faith in the rightness of our cause, where is your faith in the human spirit to be rehabilitated?!!
Where there is life there is hope and I believe that over time the welfare community CAN be rehabilitated, some will even rehabilitate themselves when they realize the truth of what we patriots are saying. Right now our attention is focused on cleaning up the political mess. Have some faith that as that proceeds the social mess will begin righting itself.

With all of Sarah Palin’s presumed influence and high approval ratings in her home state of Alaska, her support of Joe Miller wasn’t enough to retire Lisa Murkowski, who wasn’t even on the ballot. You had to physically write her name in to vote for her. If Palin can’t sway a general election of a senator in her own home state under those circumstances, and repeat, where she’s supposedly beloved, what makes you think she can knock off Obama?
No, I’m not pushing someone else. I’m very much undecided. I’d like to see Palin play a part in the party and possibly in a Republican administration, same with Gingrich, but I don’t want unelectable candidates on 2012. Making Obama a one term president is just too crucial. I truly believe that it could be the difference between saving or losing our country.

I would say let them do it in hopes that peer pressure will wake some of the other side up to the shame they’ve committed. This would also highlight to the users who identifies with who. The only reason i didn‘t post this down thread was that I’m afraid none of the regular posters would notice it down-thread. You guys should want to seperate your normal comments from the replys to other peoples comments.
3 too bad the admin of this friggin sight hasn’t noticed what any seasoned news aggregate site user already inherently understands – i.e. see sites with better user interfaces like digg or (i hate to admit but – huffpo and reddit) just sayin – BLAZE STAFF – see #2 for reasons why u should update this archaic aggregate interface. R i n o Murkowski pulled it out by-hook-or-crook??, she did. I never really heard what her platform was ? Keeping the RINO blood pure as in the long-time family tradition of career politicians, I guess? I’m sure she had the “progressive nudge”, called appointment bailing her out (she’s too big to fail) Elections have consequences!

Why other Republicans in Congress accept her in their midst is just as puzzling. Do they really think she can ever be trusted to support conservative principles? She should go sit with her friends on the other side of the aisle where she belongs.

Typical progressive scum. I wonder what her feelings are about people who stone women and behead infidels? Like most progressives she probably supports the cult of intolerance. One thing is for sure, progressives are predictable. If it’s perverted, intolerant or just something a good decent person with character would find unthinkable, they will be for it.

There are some good things being done by Planned Parenthood, unfortunately abortion is not one of them. Abortion should be excluded from any further federal funding while some projects continue. Why can’t abortion be excluded indefinitely from federal funding and screening for breast and cervical cancers remain funded ? Can’t legislation be worded in such away that abortion is no longer federally funded while other services continue to receive funding ? Is that too difficult a task for our politicians ?

Don’t blame all Alaskan republicans (or conservatives) for Murkowski. Many of us did vote for Joe Miller–enthusiastically, I might add. But a whole lot of democrats defected (the dem wasn’t going to win anyway) and voted for her along with the squishy republicans in the cities. Include the corporations around the state that supported her (IOW, the Native corporations that want to keep getting their federal money) and you get what we got.
Begich is up in 2014. We’ll see what we can do at that point.
