Railing Against Pork: McCain Tells Tea Party to ‘Grab Your Pitchforks’

Earlier this month we noted the unusual metaphor by Sen Claire McCaskill (D-MO) urging people to “take up pitchforks” if tax rates were extended for the top income earners. At that time, Scott wondered what might happen if a conservative said the same thing:
I would never be one to declare the casual use of a metaphor as a literal call for a violent uprising. But it is always interesting to play the reversal game. What if Palin had said this? There would be instantaneous demands for her retraction and apology.
Well, now one such conservative has obliged. While it wasn’t Sarah Palin who said it, it was her running mate Sen. John McCain (R-AZ)who used the analogy twice during a Fox appearance Thursday morning.
“I’m saying to the Tea Partiers this morning, ‘grab your pitchforks let’s stand up against this, it can be stopped,’” he said about halfway through the interview while talking about the pork-laden omnibus spending bill. Then, toward the very end, he repeated the analogy: “Grab the pitchforks and come to Capitol Hill, Tea Partiers.”
We have reached out to McCain’s office for comment but have not received a response. Today, as we did back then, we’ll again note that this is a metaphor for expressing your disdain for something. But we’ll sit back and see if our prediction from earlier this month comes true.
UPDATE:
McCain’s office has declined to comment, only reiterating our previous point that the Senator was speaking “rhetorically.”

Posted on December 16, 2010 at 12:08pmThere was a time for the steam engine and there was a time for the electric light bulb. There was a time for the aero plane. History tells us that those that were credited for such inventions were not alone. Had they never been born another would have brought the idea to reality within a similar time frame. Bare with me here, I’ll get to the point in a moment. As with inventions there are also occurrences that have greatly altered society. Again there are those key individuals instrumental in the process of bringing about those key societal changes, but also there were others that were saying and doing nearly the same thing to promote such ideals at nearly the same time. In a nutshell the invention or the change was to come about regardless of the individual credited. It simply was the time in which it was to occur. I call this “Steam Engine Time”. I read it somewhere long ago and it seems to ring true. Whether it be the hand of God, our natural progression as a species or both, it happens. So much talk about taking up pitchforks as a light-hearted metaphor for taking up arms against those perceived as the enemy. Like the proverbial genie escaping the bottle, regardless of which side or which person says what, I believe “steam engine time” is fast approaching.

Posted on December 16, 2010 at 9:21pmSo if the American Founders had never been born, would America have risen? There would have been a Revolution perhaps, but would our Constitution say the same things? Perhaps, but it is doubtful. A miracle took place at the birth of this nation. These fellows were inspired by DIVINE PROVIDENCE. Now, perhaps others would have been inspired as well. The founding of America is the greatest invention man has ever conceived, and nothing like it has ever existed anywhere else, nor at any time. Furthermore, if this great experiment should ever fail, there will never be another like it. America is the exception to your ‘steam engine’ theory.

Report Post »Your idiocy is apparent. It’s 8/28, moron. Now STFU and let the adults have a conversation about things more important than how much cheese has rubbed off the cheese doodles and fallen in to your belly button.

Posted on December 17, 2010 at 8:45amI think that the justice department and the attorney general should be indicting every member of the congress as well as the President under the federal RICO act for running an ongoing criminal enterprise. Last time I checked writing bad checks was a crime (deficit spending) and grand larceny is as well (stealing from the Social Security fund to pay for other wasteful government spending). EVERY one of these crooks need to be indicted. No slap on the wrist censure. They should be jailed and fined for their felonious acts
