White House Admits to Asking News Agencies to Pull Malia Obama Vacation Story

Update: Rick Santorum has offered his thoughts on the issue. Hear them here.
The White House has admitted to telling news agencies to pull stories on Malia Obama visiting Mexico for spring break, Politico reports.
Kristina Schake, Communications Director to the First Lady, emailed Dylan Byers:
From the beginning of the administration, the White House has asked news outlets not to report on or photograph the Obama children when they are not with their parents and there is no vital news interest. We have reminded outlets of this request in order to protect the privacy and security of these girls.
The Blaze first noticed the disappearing stories Monday afternoon, when accounts of Malia and 12 friends visiting Oaxaca with 25 Secret Service agents mysteriously began turning into broken links.
However, in admitting to “reminding outlets” about not reporting on the Obama children when there is “no vital news interest,” the White House has also tacitly admitted that Malia is (or now maybe was) in Mexico for spring break. Additional evidence has surfaced confirming that. One site has published a photo of the Obamas going to church on Sunday. It notes that Malia is absent, and says that’s due to the Mexico trip:
That site has also posted alleged photos of the vacation, but we have decided not to repost those.
As The Blaze noted on Monday, a vacation for Malia in Mexico raises a slew of questions considering the State Department has warned American citizens against travel there.
In fact, the language contained in the State Department’s travel warning is quite ominous.
“[C]rime and violence are serious problems throughout the country and can occur anywhere,” the warning reads. “U.S. citizens have fallen victim to TCO activity, including homicide, gun battles, kidnapping, carjacking and highway robbery.” [Emphasis added] It continues later:
The rising number of kidnappings and disappearances throughout Mexico is of particular concern. Both local and expatriate communities have been victimized. In addition, local police have been implicated in some of these incidents. We strongly advise you to lower your profile and avoid displaying any evidence of wealth that might draw attention.
Additionally, the warning (dated February 8) notes that “U.S. government personnel and their families are prohibited from personal travel to all areas described as ‘defer non-essential travel’ and when travel for official purposes is essential it is conducted with extensive security precautions.” However, it adds that “USG personnel and their families are allowed to travel for personal reasons to the areas where no advisory is in effect or where the advisory is to exercise caution.”
According to the release, no specific warning has been issued for Oaxaca, where Malia is said to be. However, there have been concerns about that area in the past.
This is a breaking story. Updates will be added.

Puebla: No advisory is in effect.
Queretaro: No advisory is in effect.”
As the pictures show her at Monte Alban, Oaxaca, that area is quite safe. The Blaze’s reporting that the country in total is not safe is like comparing visiting the Grand Canyon to walking down downtown Camden. Most of the violence in Mexico takes place in the northern states.

Posted on March 20, 2012 at 10:55amI agree that 13 is too young to be taking Spring Break vacations without parents. But, give the Obamas a break. They are afraid that Daddy will lose the election, and they no longer will be able to vacay on the taxpayers’ dime. These people think they are entitled to a luxe vacation every month or two, as long as someone else is paying. Sending 25 taxpayer support Secret Service agents to Mexico to protect a kid and her friends on Spring Break is an outrage. These people are just as “entitled” as the welfare recipients who comprise their base. They are just getting away with a much more expensive scam.

Did they pull the story about Moochelle and the same daughter with an entourage of their friends who travelled to Spain? Spain has active terrorist cells there. So we do this based on the city in question is that what you‘re saying and the white house isn’t saying?

Posted on March 20, 2012 at 11:09amwhy is this story important? a few reasons
1) the state department has called mexico a dangerous place to visit for americans. ok now one of the presidents children are there for vacation. imagian what it would mean for the american people if teh first daughter was killed there. war at the very least.
2) they took 25 agents for protection. think how much this costs the taxpayers. yes they need protection but it would be prudent for the president to pick somewhere safer for a vacation that would require less security.
3) the girl is 13. and she is going on a vacation to mexico with out her parents. while this is their porogative it shows a sevire lack of good judgement and that is an issue for the american people
4) never has the media had to take down a story like this for anything but national security. you can say that having a story of the first daughter vacationing in a dangerous country a matter of national security, but then go back to point 1 and 3. anything less than that is censorship.
5) it shows how out of touch he is with the american people his wife just got back from a beach vacation and now this. this man has the audacity to claim he understands what it is like to be a normal american family. its hypocritical
to properly read and understand the news you must have the ability to critical think and extrapolate from reports. i figured this out 2 minutes after seeing this story. whats scary is not what is found in it but what we might have missed

“So if “no advisory is in effect” why pull the story for “security reasons”?”
It would be reasonable to think it’s because people would take the opportunity to be stalk her, to heckle her, or to try and harm her anyway. Not because it’s Mexico; but because she‘s the president’s daughter.
Flip it around: you’ve got an adult mind. Why do you think tracking the movements of the president’s daughter could be a security concern?

So if the media is blacked out, no one in Mexico has the ability to tell anyone else (perhaps even drug cartels) that a U.S. president’s daughter is there and therefore “no one can take the opportunity to stalk her”. ” Is this really so difficult for you champ? This has nothing at all to do with “security concerns” it has everything to do with optics during an election year.”
I’m amazed. You yourself are saying that Americans have been warned away from Mexico (which is patently untrue in the states in question, but let’s pass that), but can’t come to agree there are any security concerns?
I’m honestly disappointed. Even as an intellectual exercise I thought you would be able to think of some kind of security concern with tracking the movements of a president’s daughter. I thought too highly of you, I suppose.
Now, optics could obviously play a part in it too; I’m not thrilled that it takes 25 Secret Service members to help out on this trip, especially as we’ll likely be stuck with the bill. I think Obama should definitely be confronted with this in the next press interview. But know what? I think it can wait until she’s no longer on the trip and having paparazzi follow her. I honestly don’t know how ANY parent can say “Yeah, I think unknown people should report the movements of a child who’s away from her family.”

Posted on March 20, 2012 at 12:40pmWASHINGTON – First Lady Laura Bush lashed out at media coverage of her 19-year-old twin daughters yesterday, claiming the press has victimized her family for the sake of a quick buck.
“I think it’s selling magazines and newspaper articles and television at the expense of my children,” Bush told CNN’s “Inside Politics.”
“That’s what I think it is.”
In remarks sure to be controversial, the First Lady argued for a blackout on news coverage of daughters Jenna and Barbara, whose problems with underage drinking have been widely reported.
“I think that our children ought to be totally left alone and allowed to have a totally private life,” Bush said.

I lived in Mexico for a study abroad trip several years ago; I also have vacationed in D.F., Puebla, and Oaxaca (and really I recommend them to anyone who wants to learn some native American culture or some of the history of the country; speaking Spanish helps, of course). As in ANY place, you need to pick where and when to travel. And as with anyone, not having your ever move tracked and reported is not only common decency, but paramount to security.

Posted on March 20, 2012 at 5:46pm@LOCKED, This is not my 13 year old daughter,( who would not be allowed to go at ALL!) this is the POTUS daughter, techinically, as important as the POTUS himself, can you say national security risk. Who cares how safe it is, I wouldn’t let her go to Nebraska without me or her mother. This is yet another POOR decision on the BO’s behalf. What 13 year old goes to Mexico for spring break, are you kidding me, is she gonna be on a bar doing the maranga with her skirt over her head. What the hell is wrong with you. Besides don’t they take a vacation somewhere in the world every 2 weeks anyhow. Your an idiot, I hope your not raising a daughter.

I’ve been to Mexico about 10 times, 7 in the last 7 years, went to Oaxaca in the early 90′s, excellent historic city with tons of culture, most of which security concerns will prohibit the lollypop guild from enjoying. WE WILL pick up the tab and that makes most of us angry. It would be nice to think that the press will ask questions after her return, but, have you ever noticed that Barack makes a statement and MIGHT take one or two questions from a pre-vetted media person then leave. He has a lot to answer for BUT feels he does not answer to anyone. And the media for the most part simply WILL NOT ask tough questions even if he actually had a q and a session. Come on man. Here’s the first thing on youtube I found about the 2004 election: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9k99IM3ZjZ8 When you go on the campaign trail and speak in public on behalf of your father’s Presidential campaign, that’s “bringing your daughter into the ”media spotlight.”

Mahlia goes to Mexico with friends as Obama signed that executive order on Friday that differs from the previous executive orders that were regarding the same subject matter. It is kind of like the BP oil spill: Obama administration and EPA was talking about how the oil companies need to be more regulated and fewer permits just before an unheard of oil spill. Posted on March 20, 2012 at 10:31pmJust to recap here. The President’s daughter goes with a school trip with her classmates and teachers. The press reports on the trip and the White House asks them not cover it. There’s press value in that, but worldwide coverage of his daughter‘s school trip is probably something her classmates or teachers don’t really want and something that doesn’t improve their safety. I’m sure there are a lot of people, Al Quaida for example, who’d love to kill a bunch of US kids.
Seriously folks, if you were President, in the world we live in, and you child goes on a trip with her school, would you want her every move, and the movement of her classmates, and teachers broadcast to the world? Say what you want, but I don’t think you would. And if you were President, I imagine you’d ask the press to lay off too.

How many things related to the war or diplomacy has the government kept secret because of potential embarrassment? For instance, the “collateral murder” story made infamous by wikileaks that resulted in the arrest of Army Spc. Bradley Manning, -the machine-gunning of a group of innocent people and subsequently a van full of children by a US helicopter gunship. Bradley Manning was arrested for making the story public. No one was ever arrested for killing those people, or shooting those children, nor for covering up the story. I could go on. More examples include the Jessica Lynch story, the Abu Ghraib prison abuse story, stories about torture of innocent people in secret CIA prisons, the Pat Tillman story, etc. So… should we trust our government? Can we realistically be expected to run a legitimate election without full knowledge of what our government is doing and what it is involved with? This says nothing of the quote “news stories” that we do see or hear about that are actually lies and dishonest propaganda designed to manipulate the public. Consider this: Before Mr. Obama appointed Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court, she represented him in lawsuits as the Solicitor General… now, could he have promised her a seat on the Supreme Court if she could get those petitions denied a hearing? http://www.supremecourt.gov/Search.aspx?FileName=/docketfiles/09-8857.htm or, http://www.supremecourt.gov/Search.aspx?FileName=/docketfiles/09-6790.htm or, http://www.supremecourt.gov/Search.aspx?FileName=/docketfiles/09-724.htm Did Obama appoint Kagan as a reward for getting those petitions against him denied? Did she also do earlier legal work for him? Will she recuse herself in any and all Supreme Court hearings against his eligibility for the Presidency? The man is crawling with secrets. He planted her onto the Supreme Court so she could RULE on those lawsuits if they eventually reached the SC. That reeks of secrecy and ill-gotten gains.

“Isn‘t this just a slap in the face of working Americans to see Obama’s kids on Spring Break with not a care in the world.”
(You’re right, Obama‘s 13 year old daughter shouldn’t be allowed to have any fun in her life. I suppose nobody’s kids should be allowed to go on spring break ever, just to please you.)
“Because of Obama’s energy policies we are suffering though extremely high gas prices…”
(So, every person who actually knows about such things says that the President has little or nothing to do with gas prices, which is also what every Republican said when gas prices skyrocketed under Dubya, but you know better than they do. In fact, it was said (can’t remember by whom) that the quickest way to raise gas prices is to keep talking about war with Iran, which every Republican has decided to do. It couldn’t be because they really want gas prices to go up so they can blame it on Obama, could it?)
This has got to STOP. The King must be thrown out of office.
(If he were truly King, you would’ve already been stood up against a wall and shot, and the world would be a better place for it.)
This is not right.

Posted on March 20, 2012 at 10:54ama few reasons

And that’s not to mention the lives of 12 other innocent children. WHAT is in the head of a parent who would allow their daughter to go (perhaps being known as the good friend of the POTUS? Ugh).
No 13 year old is entitled to go on a spring vacation, but IF they do, it should be with their parents…and when you are the president, then your daughter should be visiting historical sites in THIS country! Tell me…do you think these girls have seen all of them? Certainly there is somewhere they could visit here. No, instead we have a president who believes he is exempt…the tough economic times are not to include him. And, to just rub it in our faces, have 12 of her friends go with her, along with 25 Secret Service agents, ALL ON THE TAXPAYERS DIME! What, the vacation in Hawaii 3 months ago wasn’t restful enough? What, the ski vacations last month weren’t restful enough? I don’t understand what a 13 year old needs to have a spring break vacation outside of the home anyway, but that is btw Pres Algae and the First Wookie and their daughters. But it does concern me when they expect ME to pay for THEIR daughter’s vacation!
Tell you what, since you think that this is a non-story. You volunteer to foot the bill for this. Then, I won’t care where she goes or how many she takes with her. It is all private money then. But when you think that your kids are entitled to a vacation on the TAXPAYER’S DIME, when I personally haven‘t been on a vacation for several years because I CAN’T AFFORD IT, then I get a tad upset.

(dreamer) First Lady, glad you talked about how great your dad was while you were growing up but lady what were you thinking this time?

Posted on March 20, 2012 at 10:28amI recall an attack on two federal agents in Mexico and the news stated that federal agents weren’t allowed to be armed while in Mexico. Does this mean 25 unarmed agents are protecting these girls or does this mean ONLY agents protecting these girls are allowed to be armed ? I think there is a huge news story here and an even bigger news story of the WH once again trampling on the 1st Amendment.

Posted on March 20, 2012 at 10:26amGuess the Obama vacations give new meaning to the Hillary “ it takes a village” philosophy. If the American tax payer was shafted for this entourage and the accompanying Secret Service, the Obamas must be related to and channeling their Marie Antoinette lineage . Talk about CLUELESS. Disgusting. But am sure this will be twisted into accusing the nasty conservatives of “ exploiting” Obama’s daughter. typical media manipulation by our 99% Bull-oney White House ! And their Lap Dog Media will comply as usual….

Let’s not do what the left does and take a situation that makes complete sense and turn it into a political football. If this was my daughter, and I was in the President’s shoes, I want my kids to be a non story just from a safety issue. We taxpayers are paying for her SS protection. Have you any idea what a coup it would be for one of those druglords to take out the daughter of the President of the United States? He is not burying the story for her protection – if he gave a crap she wouldn’t be there. He‘s burying the story because of his high and mighty don’t question me attitude.
