White House Bullies SF Reporter, Then Denies It. Transparency or Thuggery?

Last week’s dust-up between the press and the White House following the coverage of a fundraising event in San Francisco may be a turning point in the media’s relationship with the Obama White House.

The chronology of events is as follows:

  1. The President attends a Democratic Party fundraising event in San Francisco.
  2. Print Pool reporters (a small, pre-approved group of newspaper journalists that simultaneously feed their coverage to all outlets) are in attendance.
  3. A protest erupts and one of the pool reporters catches it on video. (Citizens in attendance recorded this as well)
  4. The reporter posts the video online.
  5. The White House bans the reporter from future pool coverage, threatens to ban affiliated reporters if the ban is exposed
  6. The ban is exposed.
  7. The White House denies banning reporter, denies threatening other reporters, and apparently reinstates the reporter.

The video that triggered this kerfuffle can be seen here:

That brief clip seems relatively harmless. The President is seen reacting calmly to a short protest message delivered in harmonious fashion. So why did the White House take exception to this clip being posted and expel or threaten expulsion of the Chronicle’s Carla Marinucci? The answer remains foggy, and the Chronicle appears to be dug in on the issue and is defending their actions as well as questioning the actions and motives of the White House.

San Francisco Chronicle editor Ward Bushee called out the White House for not telling the truth;

Sadly, we expected the White House to respond in this manner based on our experiences yesterday. It is not a truthful response. It follows a day of off-the-record exchanges with key people in the White House communications office who told us they would remove our reporter, then threatened retaliation to Chronicle and Hearst reporters if we reported on the ban, and then recanted to say our reporter might not be removed after all.

The Chronicle’s report is accurate.

If the White House has indeed decided not to ban our reporter, we would like an on-the-record notice that she will remain the San Francisco print pool reporter.

But the story does not end with the statement from the editor. Chronicle publisher Phil Bronstein, seeing the obvious abuse of power here, weighed in;

The President and his staffers deftly used social media like Twitter and Facebook in his election campaign and continue to extol the virtues and value. Except, apparently, when it comes to the press.

So what’s up with the White House? We can’t say because neither Press Secretary Jay Carney nor anyone from his staff would speak on the record.

Other sources confirmed that Carla was vanquished, including Chronicle editor Ward Bushee, who said he was “informed that Carla was removed as a pool reporter.” Which shouldn‘t be a secret in any case because it’s a fact that affects the newsgathering of our largest regional paper (and sfgate)and how local citizens get their information.

What’s worse: more than a few journalists familiar with this story are aware of some implied threats from the White House of additional and wider punishment if Carla’s spanking became public. Really? That’s a heavy hand usually reserved for places other than the land of the free.

But bravery is a challenge, in particular for White House correspondents, most of whom are seasoned and capable journalists. They live a little bit in a gilded cage where they have access to the most powerful man in the world but must obey the rules whether they make sense or not.

CBS News reporter, Mark Knoller, has publicly protested the limited press access to Obama fundraisers, calling the policy “inconsistent.“ ”It’s no way to do business,” wrote Politico’s Julie Mason, “especially [for] a candidate who prides himself on transparency.”

A 2009 blog by the White House Director of New Media states that “President Obama is committed to making his administration the most open and transparent in history.”

Not last week.

Bronstein closes his piece by leaving some wiggle room for the White House;

Late today, there were hints that the White House might be backing off the Carla Fatwa.

Barack Obama sold himself successfully as a fresh wind for the 21st century. In important matters of communication, technology, openness and the press, it’s not too late for him to demonstrate that.

We should be mindful of the previous actions of this administration when placed in adversarial positions.

Just about a year ago, Energy Secretary Ken Salazar appeared on CNN and talked about ‘putting a boot on the throat of BP’ and Robert Gibbs repeated the tough talk and reinforced the pledge at a press briefing the next day;

And then there is the pending Executive Order (reported here last week) which would mandate that any company hoping to win a government contract would have to reveal all political contributions made by the company, as well as those made by officers and board members of the company. While not stating that these contributions will hold any sway in deciding which companies will win these lucrative government contracts, it certainly raises eyebrows as to the motives of such an order. This order is even more suspect when you take note of the exception given to certain unions that are bidding on government business.

  • Banning a reporter for a relatively small violation of an archaic rule.
  • Threatening other reporters access if the ban is exposed.
  • Using tough and threatening language with BP.
  • Mandating through Executive Order that all companies wishing to do business with the government reveal their political contributions… unions exempted.

Is the media starting to connect the dots, realizing that they too might become targets of an overreaching government?

As mentioned above, this might be a turning point in the alleged love affair between mainstream media and the Obama administration. The Press needs to know that it can be vigilant and unfettered, or the words printed, videos posted, and televised reports will always be suspect.

The Truth Has No Agenda.

    4th Reich is here. All those in San Franfreako deserve what is a com’n. Spent many good years there and in Marin County. Used to be very conservative. Just like everything else, infiltrated and destroy from within. Rotten to the core!

    “The first casualty of war is the truth.” What else would you expect from an administration that is based on lies and deception. Lies also based in omission and exclusion by the “most tansparent administration yet”. Think how much damage would have been done to our Great Republic if it were not for the technology available today. Shame on this administration and any public official that deigns to lie to the very people that put them in a position that demands honesty above all else.     The Press will take the Abuse and still be in the Camp for Obama. This is not gonna change anything. The Press will always be in the tank for Obama. The Elections (if there is one) in 2012 will still be about thrills running up the legs of reporters and the Skin Color will be the only thing that will matter.       Thuggery pure and simple; the administration had tried to intimidate the rest of the media with their declaring of FOX to be nothing more than a machine of propaganda – a falsehood (unlike MSNBC which IS a propaganda machinery). They reacted with some minor concern and hackles raised over that…so hopefully they are waking up now to the dangers, though it is almost too late for it to be stopped.

      Hope they are now seeing what is going on.

      What do we expect from a goverment that is bent on forcing us to become apart of the One World System. It has a clear objective and any thing even the slightest indication that there is not harmony within the ranks is to be qleshed. It is the mentality of a dictatorship and the arrogance that the Goverment knows best for the Governed. I hope and pray that the American people can realize the real direction we are headed before changing it will lead to a civil war. Because I know that the other side, the Progressives, wouldn’t mind seeing us in a civil war. They right now control the Armed Forces of the United States. You can be sure that if they remain in power you will see the Goverment move towards the One World System. Our money will become worthless and we will have to accept the One world currancy, with that the One World Open Society Goverment, with that being subject to the One World Courts. We will be governed first by International Law, then our laws, and our laws will have to be subject to the international law. Look at what happened to AZ and the Federal Goverment. AZ pass an Immigration law as a State. The Federal Gov has said no to AZ you are not allowed to do that. That is not how our country is set up. the reverse is how it is suppose to work. States are the most responsible Goverments to the people of the United States. The Federal is the unbrella of protection Goverment keeping the States united and free from outside invasions and international intervention on our freedoms. We are seeing a progression down the road to the One World Govement/System in our own Goverment. If we don’t stop it now through our voting system and peacable actions and information we will find that to excerise the right to abolish the goverment will be a bloody one and very violent later. We need to get the Federal Goverment back in it’s supportive role of supporting and protecting the Union from the international community invasion. We need to support the rights of the States to be the main source of Goverment in our lives and then somewhat limited. Think about where we are headed folks. Take time not to over react but with sense consider each little step we are being forced to walk and the direction we are going. Remember a journey of a 1000 miles starts with one step, and is accomplished one step at a time. We have been on this journey to the One World System for a long time already and the end is now in sight.

      It is so obvious my head is about to explode. This administration has always been about thuggery. It’s the Chicago (SEIU) way. In fact I think I remember a quote from them recently along the lines … “punish your enemies and reward your friends” or something like that. Now the liberal press is finding out they too can be thrown under the bus. (sweet)

      This imposter has set the bar at a new low and has done more damage to the office of the Presidency than anyone realizes. When will America find the kahoonas to take some kind of action? Or, are we doomed to accept the cover-up that nothing unusual is actually happening here…move along? It’s our own fault…the problem is, we’re just too stupid or racist, or radical ourselves.

      APATRIOTFIRST posted a comment about the Blaze being against the first amendment. While I understand its upsetting to have things you’ve said edited or deleted without your consent, and don’t agree with it, this has nothing to do with your free speech. No laws were made restricting your free expression, thats really the end of it. The Blaze has every right to offend you. When you boil it down, your asking them to give up their freedom of expression.

      Ward Bushee, are you serious? Does this mean for 2-1/2 years your news outlet has believed everything coming out of the WH without checking the facts? Join a Tea Party, man, and then do your homework, unless being in the “elite” group allowed in Obama’s pre-planned and staged events is more important than your ethics. If, and when, you ever wake up and smell the coffee, perhaps you can wake up some of your fellow editors too. Not holding my breath in FL though.

      I think comments vanish for two reasons. First is a link might lead to a site that doesn’t allow its publication to be used without express written consent. That would leave The Blaze open to possible suit for infringement.

      The other is maybe a problem with the software that lets the forum exist, or maybe the servers. I, too, have had posts simply vanish when I was within this site’s rules. I think it’s happened to all of us at least once.

      What I do for a lengthy post is save to Notepad, to further edit to be sure I’m in compliance with The Blaze and repost. Usually the second time stays.

They lie, they cheat, they make up stories, they incite — and all of these things are done to attempt to bolster the left and demonize the right.       This has been this administration’s modus operandi all along. The secrecy and lack of transparency would make any dictator envious, especially the way Obama has been able to pull this off in what is supposed to be a free country. There have been a couple noted temper tantrums from the press along the way but for the most part they are very willing participants as they realize without their blindness this administration could not get away with what he is doing to this country and carry out his leftist agenda. I recall a spat early on where Helen Thomas and others were involved where she gave it to his press secretary Robert Gibbs about the lack of access of this administration. I believe she said it was worse than anything even Nixon ever done. It like other rare occurrences are just swept under the rug and the story left to die, as I believe this one will be.

      The blinders are finally starting to come off the media who have been dutiful plough horses for the administration the last 2 years. Obama has used them to present only his progressive agenda, and now they are seeing how they have blindly allowed that to happen. Sad that this San Francisco media only started complaining after its employee was treated unfairly. The media nationwide should have seen this type of thuggery coming a long time ago. You give up one freedom and then another….eventually it leads to a form of dictatorship. Obama has stepped over the line once too often.

      I saw Atlas Shrugged last week and highly recommend that every American should see it. It is an accurate portrayal of what has already happened to our country. The progressives are now doing exactly what Ayn Rand predicted in her book: big government is out of control and individual freedoms are being taken away daily.

      This movie must be driving the libs crazy. I heard that nearly all the actors were conservatives, and that they were thrilled to be working with others who shared the same ideology. They didn’t have to worry about Big Brother listening in while they were filming.

      Apparently the journalists haven’t watched MAYOR DALEY at a press conference..he has actually gone out of his way to embarrass reporters who HE thought asked TO MANY questions or DIDN’T just take his word about something.. IT’S THE CHICAGO WAY.. where do you think OBAMA learned this?? I have been waiting for the other 49 states to get off their butts and say something… first FOX isn’t a news station ..       If they don’t catch on and quick–life is going to get tougher. Each of these reporters should hold up their journalistic integrity and if that means actions by their network and/or the White House, it should be exposed EVERY time. The only way the truth gets to the people is if the media neutrally reports it. We have a severe problem with all of our media outlets. The time to mention the problem is not two years from now in a jail cell when it is too late.

      I agree that it is thuggery. Pretty typical of a ‘president’ who seems to think of himself as a king. It isn’t just a question of whether or not the mainstream press is finally catching on, though. What I’m waiting to see, is whether or not they will follow through and call him on it pubically. Not only that, but they need to call him on it every time he tries to pull something on them. If he bans all who criticize, then he may eventually find himself with no one to give him publicity at all, which in a free country, is not good.
