White House Plans to Release New Gun Safety Measures in the Near FutureWASHINGTON (The Blaze/AP) — Six months after Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot, the White House is preparing to propose some new steps on gun safety, though they’re likely to fall short of the bold measures activists would like to see.

Spokesman Jay Carney said that the new steps would be made public “in the near future.” He didn’t offer details, but people involved in talks at the Justice Department to craft the new measures said they expected to see something in the next several weeks. Whatever is proposed is not expected to involve legislation or take on major issues, like banning assault weapons, but could include executive action to strengthen the background check system or other steps.

“The president directed the attorney general to form working groups with key stakeholders to identify common-sense measures that would improve American safety and security while fully respecting Second Amendment rights,” Carney said Thursday. “That process is well under way at the Department of Justice, with stakeholders on all sides working through these complex issues, and we expect to have some more specific announcements in the near future.”

Anti-gun groups have been disappointed to see no action so far from President Barack Obama, who supported tough gun control measures earlier in his career but fell largely silent upon becoming president. Some activists were using the opportunity of the six-month anniversary of the Giffords shooting on Friday to speak up.

The shooting rampage in Tucson, Ariz., killed six people and wounded more than a dozen others, including Giffords. Two months later, Obama wrote an opinion piece in Giffords’ local paper, the Arizona Daily Star, calling for “sound and effective steps” to keep guns out of the hands of criminals, including strengthening background checks. He wrote:

Most gun-control advocates know that most gun owners are responsible citizens. Most gun owners know that the word “commonsense” isn’t a code word for “confiscation.” And none of us should be willing to remain passive in the face of violence or resigned to watching helplessly as another rampage unfolds on television.

So far the president has done nothing and administration officials have signaled that no major steps should be expected, given the climate in Congress against gun legislation of any kind.

But, the president faces a tough battle when dealing with “gun control.” If he moves too far to the left, he risks launching an intense Second Amendment debate. However, if he simply ignores his former proclamations he faces alienating gun rights advocates. FOX News has more:

What remains unclear is just how far out on a limb the president is willing to go on gun control. If he goes too far, the Second Amendment debate could reach great heights as the president battles for his re-election. If he doesn’t go far enough, some in his base may view him as weak on gun laws.

Interestingly, CNS News reports that Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) is taking a hardline against the Obama administration’s enforcement of gun laws. In the wake of the “Project Gunrunner” scandal, Issa has been a tough Obama administration critic. On Thursday, he said the following on FOX News:

“Under President George W. Bush, U.S. attorneys were even fired for not enforcing guns laws strictly enough.”

He went on to say that under the Obama administration:

“there seems to be a ‘don’t bother to enforce at all’ policy, so that disturbs us — that there’s less gun enforcement about illegal gun transactions under an administration that theoretically is more for gun control, and George W. Bush went out of his way to try to help the Mexicans by having a zero tolerance to illegal guns sales that could end up in Mexico.”

The uncertainty regarding what the newfound steps will bring isn’t stopping activists from pushing Obama. The group Mayors Against Illegal Guns, headed by Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, sent Obama a letter calling him to act. The Blaze recently reported on the group’s push for stricter firearm regulations.

“To prevent the next Tucson, we need a comprehensive background check system, which is what the president called for in April,” said the director of the mayors’ group, Mark Glaze. “That said, there are many steps the president can take on his own authority, without new laws, that could make a very real difference.” NPR highlights one of these proposed steps:

For example, military and federal agencies are required to report people with mental health and drug problems to the criminal background check system, but they often don’t. That’s something gun control advocates say the president could fix.

The mayors‘ group’s suggestions included enforcing reporting laws that could have stopped the Tucson shooter from getting a weapon.

    There is nothing anyone can do, if a criminal is going to get a gun you aren‘t going to stop him no matter how much you ban it and banning guns puts people at risk because they won’t be able to defend themselves which people are entitled to under the 2nd Amendment.

      Maybe if they focused on the AMA doling out, so called, antipsychotics drugs the shooting rampages would stop. Notice how Lauders records were seal by a court after the shooting, but they couldn’t do it fast enough at Virgina Tech or Columbine.
      These rampages are a direct result of the AMA promoting drug use, of course it drugs THEY deal.

    As a dealer, I am required to call in the “Instant” background check on anyone making a firearm purchase. There are some exceptions such as if the person holds a Concealed Carry Permit then that exempts them from the background check.
    The problem with adding people with “Mental” problems so some list to prevent them from buying a firearm crosses the doctor-patient privacy boundaries. Also, suppose you went to see a professional counselor after a tragic event, such as a death in the family, will that now put you on the list where you cannot excercise your Second Amendmewnt rights ??
    This is a Slippery Slope we dare not get on….

As a result, the President is going to once again bypass Congress and put more restrictions on law abiding citizens through Executive order.       I agree. Gunwalker aka Fast and Furious is a shame. As a law abiding citizen I take my gun rights serious. If I was sending guns to Mexico I’m sure I would be sitting in a federal holding cell until the very last possible charge could be added. But, it appears that ATF is above the law.       But isn’t that the problem? Libs want gun control, but when someone is accused of a crime, they’re right there to defend them trying to get their cases thrown out or their sentences reduced. Or, according to Holder, they won’t be punished at all. Nothing makes sense anymore! They don’t want gun control to reduce crime. Honest citizens already play by the rules when it comes to owning a personal weapon. Do they think the CRIMINALS will play by any new rules they create…? No, that‘s why they’re called criminals.       You are so right! If obama had outlawed cigeretts the shooting in Arizona wouldn’t have happened. The kid that helped wrestle the shooter down would have been right there at the speech. But because he went over to the drug store first to get smokes it happened. He had a gun and a carry permit and knew how to use it. If someone had been at Virgina Tech with a gun all those kids wouldn’t have been shot. Many years ago at a Furr’s cafa in Texas a bunch of people were shot to death in a likewize situation. If that same Inciedent happened the shooter would be shot because nearly everyone in Texas has agun and a carry permit.

      This is unreal.
      Let’s review;
      I want to own a pistol. I have two options.
      1. Go to the police station and request an application for a license to carry. Fill it out. Turn it in with my $100 dollars and the certificate that shows I completed a handgun safety course (another $100). Get fingerprinted, interviewed and photographed. Wait 8 weeks. Pick up my LTC. Go find the best price on the piece I want. Present my new LTC. Fill out another form with THE SAME DAMNED QUESTIONS ON IT AS THE ORIGINAL LTC APPLICATION. Wait for the result of a phone call to ATF. Pay for the pistol and ammo. Leave the shop.

      Or…

      2. Go downtown with $500 in my pocket. Make some discreet inquiries about obtaining a pistol. Wait for about 2 hours and then meet with a guy who shows me a nice little KelTec 9mm and a box of Plus P ammo. Pay the money. Leave.

      Now…just what the HELL is Obama talking about when he calls for “sound and effective steps to keep guns out of the hands of criminals, including strengthening background checks.”

      Certainly not option #1 above. And certainly not option #2.
      CRIMINALS DO NOT FILL OUT PAPERWORK SO THAT BACKGROUND CHECKS CAN BE DONE!

      Wouldn’t “:common sense” be teaching every kid how to properly handle and use a firearm? I learned when I was a kid. Most of us did. We used to bring guns to school and keep them in the car for hunting after school. We had rifles in the corner of the kitchen or den and pistols hanging on the coat rack. And no one ever got shot. The kids that get shot today are gang bangers or kids who find a gun in someone’s house and never learned to handle it before they take it out and start playing with it.

      No question that the gun show loophole should be closed and tighter registration. Having said that, I will be purchasing my first gun in the very near future. For it is the conservative christian ideologues that present the most concern to me regarding the future of our country and true liberty.

      If you wish the government to do anything you should leave our country. We are more than capable of handling our business. Big and little governments had their chance, they failed. Just like women and blacks in politics.

If you lose the right to self defense you have lost your freedom. Look at Switzerland. They have one of the highest militia gun ownership rates in the world and have little violence.
