White House Serves Up Secret Beer Recipe

The White House on Saturday released the recipes for two of its home beer recipes after public pressure for the special suds.

Executive chef Sam Kass wrote in a post on the White House website that President Barack Obama bought a home brewing kit for the kitchen after being “inspired by home brewers across the country.”

“After the few first drafts we landed on some great recipes that came from a local brew shop. We received some tips from a couple of home brewers who work in the White House who helped us amend it and make it our own. To be honest, we were surprised that the beer turned out so well since none of us had brewed beer before,” Kass wrote.

“As far as we know the White House Honey Brown Ale is the first alcohol brewed or distilled on the White House grounds. George Washington brewed beer and distilled whiskey at Mount Vernon and Thomas Jefferson made wine but there’s no evidence that any beer has been brewed in the White House.”

The two recipes released were for a honey ale and a honey porter (below), along with a video detailing the brewing process:

White House Honey Porter

Ingredients

  • 2 (3.3 lb) cans light unhopped malt extract
  • 3/4 lb Munich Malt (cracked)
  • 1 lb crystal 20 malt (cracked)
  • 6 oz black malt (cracked)
  • 3 oz chocolate malt (cracked)
  • 1 lb White House Honey
  • 10 HBUs bittering hops
  • 1/2 oz Hallertaur Aroma hops
  • 1 pkg Nottingham dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup corn sugar for bottling

Directions

  1. In a 6 qt pot, add grains to 2.25 qts of 168˚ water. Mix well to bring temp down to 155˚. Steep on stovetop at 155˚ for 45 minutes. Meanwhile, bring 2 gallons of water to 165˚ in a 12 qt pot. Place strainer over, then pour and spoon all the grains and liquid in. Rinse with 2 gallons of 165˚ water. Let liquid drain through. Discard the grains and bring the liquid to a boil. Set aside.
  2. Add the 2 cans of malt extract and honey into the pot. Stir well.
  3. Boil for an hour. Add half of the bittering hops at the 15 minute mark, the other half at 30 minute mark, then the aroma hops at the 60 minute mark.
  4. Set aside and let stand for 15 minutes.
  5. Place 2 gallons of chilled water into the primary fermenter and add the hot wort into it. Top with more water to total 5 gallons if necessary. Place into an ice bath to cool down to 70-80˚.
  6. Activate dry yeast in 1 cup of sterilized water at 75-90˚ for fifteen minutes. Pitch yeast into the fermenter. Fill airlock halfway with water. Ferment at room temp (64-68˚) for 3-4 days.
  7. Siphon over to a secondary glass fermenter for another 4-7 days.
  8. To bottle, make a priming syrup on the stove with 1 cup sterile water and 3/4 cup priming sugar, bring to a boil for five minutes. Pour the mixture into an empty bottling bucket. Siphon the beer from the fermenter over it. Distribute priming sugar evenly. Siphon into bottles and cap. Let sit for 1-2 weeks at 75˚.

White House Honey Ale

Ingredients

  • 2 (3.3 lb) cans light malt extract
  • 1 lb light dried malt extract
  • 12 oz crushed amber crystal malt
  • 8 oz Bisquit Malt
  • 1 lb White House Honey
  • 1 1/2 oz Kent Goldings Hop Pellets
  • 1 1/2 oz Fuggles Hop pellets
  • 2 tsp gypsum
  • 1 pkg Windsor dry ale yeast
  • 3/4 cup corn sugar for priming

Directions

  1. In an 12 qt pot, steep the grains in a hop bag in 1 1/2 gallons of sterile water at 155 degrees for half an hour. Remove the grains.
  2. Add the 2 cans of the malt extract and the dried extract and bring to a boil.
  3. For the first flavoring, add the 1 1/2 oz Kent Goldings and 2 tsp of gypsum. Boil for 45 minutes.
  4. For the second flavoring, add the 1/2 oz Fuggles hop pellets at the last minute of the boil.
  5. Add the honey and boil for 5 more minutes.
  6. Add 2 gallons chilled sterile water into the primary fermenter and add the hot wort into it. Top with more water to total 5 gallons. There is no need to strain.
  7. Pitch yeast when wort temperature is between 70-80˚. Fill airlock halfway with water.
  8. Ferment at 68-72˚ for about seven days.
  9. Rack to a secondary fermenter after five days and ferment for 14 more days.
  10. To bottle, dissolve the corn sugar into 2 pints of boiling water for 15 minutes. Pour the mixture into an empty bottling bucket. Siphon the beer from the fermenter over it. Distribute priming sugar evenly. Siphon into bottles and cap. Let sit for 2 to 3 weeks at 75˚.

    You know there are a lot of subliminal psychological things going on by both sides. Mormons, i.e. Romney, don’t drink beer. Even if you hate Obama you have to admire this subtle psychological story implying that you have stuff in common with Obama that you don’t have in common with Romney. I‘m not saying I like the guy but I admire this story and it’s purpose.

      Let’s take a hypothetical situation. Your parent left yo a multi Billion dollar business, however lately it has not been doing very well. WHAT DO YOU DO?

      Do you hire a CEO that is going to give you super good and very tasty Beer Recipients or are you going to hire a CEO that is going to roll up his sleeves and make you more profit than you ever imagine.

      Obama does this kinda stuff because he is way out of his league and doesn’t know what he is doing.

      Really? I’m not even remotely interested in his beer recipe. It’s a publicity stunt. I‘m more interested in the real life stories of the people who spoke at the convention about the Romney’s compassion. I was so touched. I had never heard these stories before. I am in awe of Mitt and Ann…I I don‘t give a rat’s you-know-what about our current Head Doo Dah’s effing beer recipe!!!! I care about this country’s future!

      So glad to know the most powerful office in the world is busy concocting brewery recipes. They must have had to work hard to sneak it in between rounds of golf and fundraiser parties. Hey barry- here’s a thought! – How about actually LEADING America for a change instead of “posing”??? Unbelievable – oh and you KNOW if anything like this had ever come out of a Republican in the White House they would be deemed an alcoholic “lush” by the media!

      Obama is releasing this recipe 3 years after the fact to show he’s not a Muslim. He wouldn’t drink beer if he was a Muslim right? Well Obama might not be a Muslim, but he is a Muslim sympathizer at the very least. That’s why he put NASA in charge of political correctness and reaching out to Muslims in the Middle East. Obama doesn’t do anything without calculation. That’s was revolutionary Marxists do.

      I wonder how much time Obama actually spent with this whole beer thing?

      I maintain that between his 24/7 campaigning schedule, golfing, perfecting his WH beer recipe, and of course sleeping, I’m not sure BS/BO has time to be an actual POTUS. From his list of accomplishments that have actually benefitted this country, it is clear that we have no real POTUS.

      The porter is third in line for me to brew. Today I’m brewing:
      1/2# Crystal 40L
      3.3# Light LME
      2# Light DME
      1# brown sugar
      1 oz Goldings – 60mins.
      1/2 oz Goldings -15 min
      1/2 tsp Irish moss – 15 min
      1/2 oz Golding – 5min
      Nottingham Yeast.

      I nice drinkable Pale Ale much like Bass Ale – bad thing is i haven’t been able to make a all-grain come anywhere near as good as the extract.

      I do drink beer, but not to excess. Having lived in Germany and Belgium as well as traveling Europe, I have had some very tasty beers. But frankly, I think that I will leave this one alone much like Ibn Fadlin did in the 13th Warrior, or if you read the book, Eaters Of The Dead.

    If Obama controls healthcare in an aging society then he effectively control its death rate.  If he controls the death rate then he can effectively control the amount of revenue collected as a result of the death tax (the federal estate tax).  This is a tax that is assessed on the value of all of your assets upon your death including your house, cars, furniture, business property, machinery and inventory, stocks, bonds and real estate.  This is a big part of his hidden agenda.  This is the pot of gold Obama is after.  
    In 2013, the exemption drops from $5 million to $1 million.  Under an Obama 2nd term that exemption will fall much further and the death tax rate will climb enormously.  This is how he is going to “spread the wealth around”.
