White House Tries to Clarify 1967 Border Remarks: Only a ‘Starting Point’

After the press filmed a seemingly tense joint-statement session in the Oval Office between President Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney did his best to pick up the pieces at the daily press briefing. And the overarching message to reporters was this: the controversial comments about Israel returning to its 1967 borders only meant that those borders should be used as a starting point in negotiations:

Former Ambassador to Israel Ned Walker agrees. He trumpeted that position on Fox today:

But is that really what Obama said? For the record, here are his remarks from the actual speech:

So while the core issues of the conflict must be negotiated, the basis of those negotiations is clear: a viable Palestine, and a secure Israel. The United States believes that negotiations should result in two states, with permanent Palestinian borders with Israel, Jordan, and Egypt, and permanent Israeli borders with Palestine. The borders of Israel and Palestine should be based on the 1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps, so that secure and recognized borders are established for both states. The Palestinian people must have the right to govern themselves, and reach their potential, in a sovereign and contiguous state. [Emphasis added]

    Come on. His speech would have been carefully scripted (due to the teleprompter), so he would be saying what he meant. Of course he is now trying to patch things up after the resounding negative feedback he’s getting. What‘s truly galling is that he would have give speech PRIOR to Netenyahu’s visit.

    I voted that he was backpedaling but I wonder if he really was. Perhaps he really did mean that as a starting point. If that is what he meant then that is even worse than his “recorded” statement since if it is just a starting point the only way that the palestinians would go is to take more away from Israel. So if they start at the pre 67 borders then the next step is the entire land of Israel. I wouldn’t put this plan past obama to try to exterminate the nation of Israel.

      The entire premise of your comment is wrong! Obama is BEGINNING with 1967 borders. As stated by a writer from Israelnationalnews.com yesterday, when you BEGIN with that, there is absolutely NO reason for Palestinians to negotiate or swap ANYTHING. There’s nothing to swap when you already have what used to be negotiable as the starting point instead. With Obama’s proposal, they’ve already gotten the borders they need to carry out their annihilation of the Jewish state. They have ZERO incentive to negotiate anything!

      Obama’s father precluded his being a “natural born citizen” meaning born on U.S. soil of U.S. citizen parents; he is further ineligible by dual citizenship for being born a British citizen pursuant to the British Nationality Act of 1948, as his father was a British citizen of colonial Kenya.[1]

      NBC encompasses citizenship and requires being born of citizen parents. The Art 2, Sec 1, exemption from being a NBC “or a citizen of the United States …” wasn’t needed if NBC means a citizen.

      A NBC also means more than excluding naturalized citizenship. Congressional eligibility already does this by setting 7 and 9 “years a citizen” for House and Senate.       Otherwise a foreigner and a naturalized citizen’s child, if born on U.S. soil but raised abroad until age 21, at 35 is eligible for POTUS. Equally untenable, is Obama setting a precedent of dual citizens being eligible.

      The key words Obama used were “Contiguous state of Palestine”

      First, “Palestine” does not now, nor has it ever existed. The closest one can come to the name is Philistina, close to the city of Gaza, both of which are in the area now known as the Gaza Strip.

      Second, in order to establish a contiguous Palestinian state, Israel would have to give up a lot more than the territory it won in the six day war.

      Finally, there is not now, nor has there ever been, “1967 Borders” UN Resolution 242 and international agreements before the war and after it and 242, recognize that the lines were military only and are called the 1967 Armistice Line. 242 also states that defensible borders, near the Armistice line were to be established as the permanent borders of Israel, providing the Jewish state with clearly defined and defensible borders.

      Obama, proving his ignorance of history yet again, so obviously failed in his attempts to destroy the state of Israel by siding with internationally recognized terrorists, their masters and unfortunate proxies. I do not know what gaggle of idiots he has around him, but they have obviously been drinking their own bong water.

The transcript clearly states, “The borders of Israel and Palestine should be based on the 1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps.” Period…Full stop, as this man likes to say. It does NOT say that the 1967 borders would be a basis or starting point for negotiations. I don’t think it could be any more clear. This gentleman is attempting to water-down Obama’s remarks, for whatever reason.

      The problem is that this is the first President who has actually VERBALIZED this country’s POLICY which, by the way, has been in effect for the past 30 plus years. All the way back to George HW Bush (Bush 41) and every President since has been using the 1967 borders as a ‘starting point’ – except that they didn’t put the proposal before the public prior to negotiations with the Israeli Prime Ministers (all of them)!

      I’m at a loss to understand why there is now – but there has NEVER been before – such vile criticisms of the current President. Where was your outrage over the past thirty years??

      kryptonite: Einstein was a Red too. And no Americans do not know the Jewish Marxist connection. They are absolutely clueless to it just as I was until about 4-5 years ago. Like I use to believe we all think that the Jews are totally innocent and have never done anything wrong ever! And anyone that would questions them is evil or the devil. No if they knew it and understood it America would not be in the mess it is in today.

      Paul did not evangelize the world as a Jew but as a Christian. The Jews went around the world chasing Paul to kill him and those who associated with him or to excite the crowds to kill Christians just as they are doing today in the Middle East. The Talmud is the Holy book of the Jew not Christian but we should be aware of their teachings.. If we were aware we’d know that they look upon as mere animals and not people but we are unaware therefore we idolize a Race that hates us.

      While I don’t pretend to have a thorough understanding of the Scriptures in regards to Israel.. I do know that the NT says that the Church is the Israel of God and that if you are in Christ then are you Abraham’s Seed.

      However, as herectical is it might sound I just do not want the Good book influencing our foreign policy today.. Many fine individuals have misinterpreted that book before; therefore lets try to be even handed in all of our dealings.

      Many do not realize the teachings of Judaism and that Judaism worship a different God then those who follow Christ and how those following Judaism view Gentiles.  

      What I find shocking and quite sad is why more Americans haven’t questioned why Israel is seeking American approval for anything, especially if Israel isn’t a US proxy.

      If Israel is a sovereign Nation, with nuclear technology and “God” on her side as the progressive right lies, why seek American permission for anything? Do these same Americans believe we should seek UN permission concerning our borders….

      Remember the saying Beck exposed as Progressive teaching; The enemy of my enemy is my friend. This does not work and is bad policy whether political, economic or religious. As we see many use this progressive saying for many policy choices when in their favor..

      It is important to distinguish between practicing Jews and non-practicing Jews. The difference is the same as that between practicing Christians and Non-practiccing Christians. I doubt that many non-practicing Christians are planning on visiting the Holy Land any time soon. Same goes for the Jews. I hate to burst any bubbles here but did Jesus hate his Jewish Mom, Dad, Grandma, and Grandpa? I think not!
