Obama Uses White House Web Site to Pressure House GOP With a Tax Increase Countdown Clock

Is the Obama administration going out of its way to politicize the White House web site? At the least, the president seems to be using the platform to pressure House Republicans into supporting his payroll tax plans.
It what can only be described as an intriguing use of the government’s web presence, a new WhiteHouse.gov graphic has emerged. It reads, “If the House doesn’t act, middle class taxes increase in…” Next to this copy, a countdown clock lists the days, hours minutes and seconds left until the infamous payroll tax cut expires.
Beyond simply providing a time ticker, the White House goes on to ask, “What does $40 mean to you?” This question is clearly in reference to the payroll monies that are saved as a result of the tax-cut “stimulus” that is set to expire. Next to this question, another graphic that says “Tell Us” enables site visitors to share their story about how losing the money would be detrimental.
Here’s a screen shot from WhiteHouse.gov, as it currently stands:

On a separate page (linked to by the “Tell Us” graphic), text reads more like a campaign advertisement than it does a WhiteHouse.gov informational page:

This use of messaging isn’t random. On Tuesday, the House, led by Republicans, rejected a plan backed by President Obama that would have extended the tax benefit for two months. The Associated Press has more about the epic partisan battle that is raging in Washington:
House Republicans are demanding that the Senate join negotiations to produce an agreement within days; Senate Democrats insist no talks will take place before the House approves a stopgap measure to buy more time.
A House vote Tuesday scuttled a bipartisan Senate deal for a two-month extension of all three policies: the payroll tax cuts, jobless benefits and Medicare fees.
After the House killed the Senate measure on a 229-193 vote, Obama signaled he’ll use his presidential megaphone to try to force Republicans controlling the House into submission.
Following the GOP’s decision to squash the proposal, Obama’s campaign has taken to Twitter to pressure Republicans, using the social media platform to share messages from people who want to see the payroll tax cut extended.
Here are some recent tweets and re-tweets from the @BarackObama account:

And here‘s a screen shot from the president’s re-election Facebook page, where the messages take on a similar theme:

While it’s certainly expected that the president would use his re-election social media presence to rail against the GOP, it’s interesting to see him also using the White House web site to accomplish the same goal.

Obama quotes $1000 as the amount the average taxpayer will lose in a year.
But the democrat senate only passed a bill for two months.
The republican house passed a bill giving Obama the full year, like he quotes.
So, Obama postures about how the house needs to pass the senate bill, but
that doesn’t save taxpayers $1000.
Is this the dumbest thing ever?
No, the dumbest thing is that I seem to be the only one pointing this out.

Posted on December 21, 2011 at 9:45amWho’s playing games here? Obama and the Democrats are pushing for only 2 months so they can do this every two months until election time. They want to use this payroll tax cut to pit the middle class against the rich by calling for higher taxes on “millionaires and billionaires” to finance the payroll tax cut. If this wasn’t about playing games, the Democrats would accept the 1-year extension of the payroll tax cut instead of this silly two-month gimmick.

Posted on December 21, 2011 at 11:26amCongressional protocol. The House creates a bill and it goes to the Senate. The Senate either accepts it or makes changes. The Senate amended Bill goes back to Congress and is put onto the floor for an up or down vote. If it is agreed to it goes to the President for signature. If it is NOT agreed to it then goes to conference. WHY is Boehner and the House Republicans changing the Congressional protocol by REFUSING to allow the Senate amended bill to come to the flor for that important (required) up or down vote? I thought the Constitution was important to Republicans – so why are they refusing to follow it’s requirement? We CANNOT go any further with this bill UNTIL the Senate version has been voted up or down. We are at a standstill? And guess who is holding things up? NOT the Democrats who are actually begging for Congressional procedure to go forward – to no avail!

Posted on December 21, 2011 at 12:34pmVerySeniorCitizen is correct. The House did NOT vote on the bill. The Republican leadership realized that it might pass so they refused to allow and up or down vote.
Don’t believe the nonsense about the Republican leadership wanted to extend the bill for a year. The senate would have done that. The tax break was paid for in the bill. No, they just wanted to add extra amendments that would support their rich contributors, and were willing to gamble with your tax break to get that. It worked.
The Republicans say they want to help the average American, but that’s false as this failure clearly shows. They are working, not for their constituency, but for their wealthy donors.

Posted on December 21, 2011 at 2:22pmImam, the bill did originate in the House, and passed on a party line vote on December 14. But of course the House wasn’t so much interested in giving the average American a tax break. They had the bill include provisions to cut unemployment insurance (which affect the poor), drug test people on welfare (”I don’t see anyone in the Republican majority demanding drug testing for folks who receive oil and gas subsidies,” said Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.), freeze the pay of government employees for a couple of years (which effects the middle class and poor more than the millionaires in the House) and so on. They tied so many extraneous things to the bill, all aimed at the middle class and poor) the KNEW it wouldn’t pass in the Senate. It was silly.

Then, they throw a lurid Flash graphic up with all the dignity of an X10 ad from the 90s.
The circus website is sort of allegorical of the Presidency in general – it’s like a game show now or perhaps SNL. This is what we’ve deteriorated into. Doesn’t anyone display any humility anymore? Is there such a thing as a servant leader? Would anyone follow the Commander in Chief into battle? Would he risk his life for those he’d be leading?
Now that we’ve eliminated all sane choices for his successor, and it’ll be more of the same regardless of the party or figurehead. I’m so sick of selfish, juvenile leaders. The lack of humility from the lot of them makes me physically ill. I keep trying to rework that last sentence to make it convey what I mean, but there aren’t words.

Posted on December 21, 2011 at 8:04pmImam, you should get your news from a broader range of sources. Republican Senators thought they had bill the house would pass and you can be sure negotiations took place official or not. How many times in this administration have Senate Republican broken ranks in masse and help pass a bill Obama supported? (answer: never). But, apparently, some House Republicans changed their mind or weren’t asked.
You’ll notice too that the House leadership would not allow an up down vote on the bill. Why not? Because they thought they’d lose with enough Republicans showing some sense and voting for with their Senate counterparts. So the bill never came to a vote. Would have just taken a few minutes. Why not?
Sorry you lost your tax break. One of these days your going to realize Republicans don’t actually care if average Americans like you or me get a tax break.

Obama and his distaste for not being obeyed…..needs to go away….I’ve been ill too long…

Posted on December 21, 2011 at 7:55amNice spin White House. You want to give the American tax payer a $160 tax cut. House Republlicans want to give them a $1,000 tax cut…and they are the bad guys? Unfortunately, the dumb masses will buy it.

Posted on December 21, 2011 at 7:58amYeah GONZO, and the Dems and the White House only want it for two months? How absurd. Even one year is absurd. It needs to be permanent, and the public at large that pays taxes should be able to see through it all. Guess that public school and college dumbing down tactic is working.

Posted on December 21, 2011 at 8:23amHey Rich, I saw last night that 59% of Americans trust Obama on taxes VS 30 something% who trust Republicans. Face it, we live in the land of the clueless idiot.

Posted on December 21, 2011 at 8:24amMaybe the dumb-bho-lemming-masses will buy it. Imho, Americans are too well seasoned in how the useless potus twists everything in attempts to make his sociopathic self look like the king he believes himself to be, and won’t buy it.
BHO’s on-going mistake is believing that American Patriots are as dum as his minions and lemmings are.
Contact Your Reps, America, And Tell Them Not To Cave. Tell Boehner To Man-Up And Refuse To Cave. Contact the potus and tell him that if he wants compromise, He Is Who Needs To Compromise. America Supports Congress. America does NOT support his worthless president pretender self.
