NY’s Carl Paladino: ‘We’re Mad as Hell’

It’s seems to be a common theme with Tea Party candidates and their supporters: they‘re so upset with the establishment and government ineptitude that they’re doing something about it. In short, they’re unleashing a righteous anger to institute change.

Or, as one Tea Party candidate who won last night put it, “We’re mad as hell.”

That’s the rallying cry of New York gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino, who stunned the Republican Party by beating former congressman Rick Lazio to win his party’s nomination.

How did this happen? Paladino is a fiery politician who seems to have mimicked the anger of his constituents: “They say I am too blunt. Well, I am, and I don’t apologize for it. They say I am an angry man, and that’s true. We are all angry.”

True to form, one voter in a Buffalo suburb, who didn’t describe himself as a Tea Party supporter, told the New York Times that he voted for Paladino “because he’s mad as hell and so am I.”

Paladino’s rhetoric may have roused his supporters, but it is his platform that might be drawing them to the voting booths. He has has promised to “take a baseball bat to Albany” to clean it up, cut taxes by 10 percent in six months, eliminate public pensions for legislators, and use eminent domain to prevent the construction of the Ground Zero mosque.

The result: Republicans, not just “tea partiers,” supported him in droves on Tuesday night — he beat Lazio by an almost 2-1 margin.

Still, there are skeptics who think Paladino doesn’t have a chance of beating Democrat Andrew Cuomo, the son of popular former governor Mario. As the Times put it: “His defeat of Mr. Lazio, 52, raises the possibility of a lopsided general election contest with Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo, … who has amassed a $24 million war chest and whose commanding lead in the polls has lent him an air of invincibility.”

Echoing those sentiments, one Lazio supporter in Manhattan told the Times, “We just handed [Cuomo] the governorship.”

New York Daily News columnist Bill Hammond agrees. “Carl Paladino loves to bluster about going after Albany’s powerbrokers with a baseball bat,” he wrote in a column today, “but the only thing he‘s likely to beat to a pulp is the state GOP’s credibility.“ He added that his nomination ”spells almost certain disaster” for those that will have to defend him until November.

Hammond goes on to use words such as reckless, hallow, dumb, unworkable, illegal, and demagogic to describe Paladino’s ideas. He uses terms such as wackadoo, train wreck, and blow-hard to describe Paladino.

But if past rhetoric is any indication, Paladino will probably cherish the criticism. On Tuesday night, he delivered a message to those who didn’t support him: “You‘re welcome to join the people’s crusade. … Come aboard, you’re both welcome and needed. If we unite, we’ll win. We’ll re-build New York.”

    Appears to me that the RINO wing of the GOP is to blame if the conservative candidate loses. The Rovers of the establishment GOPers are aiding and abetting the Democrat campaigns with criticism, villification and disgusting attacks against Republican grass roots candidates. They would truly eat their own children to keep power. They must have short memories for it was the same establishment GOPers who brought us record spending, deficits and earmarks during the Bush admin. For that they were thrown out.

    Then to watch Rove demonize O’Donnell on Hannity? Makes me sick to watch that snake in the grass when he tries to play Mr. Conservative. Where was he when the Republican congress passed the lie called the prescription drug benefit that has now ballooned out of control?

    The irony is that Democrats are running from Obama as well as their own records while the Rovers are running from their own duly selected candidates. Why not run to principles, values and honor instead of running away from them Carl?

    The RNC’s stunning reaction to this duly elected GOP candidate proves 2 things to me: First, our individual votes do count. Second, both parties are controlled by the same puppet master. Who are they to tell us who is electable and who isn’t? I say “We the People” decide who goes to Washington and not the arrogant, self serving “ruling” elite. I will never donate to a party ever again, my dollars will go directly to candidates, right or left, the candidate who most represents my moral beliefs and issues. This election far outreaches Republican or Democrat, it is an election which signals the demise of both parties and ushers in the new era of “We the People.”

They really have no clue what is about to happen. This is going to be written and remembered in yet to be published US history books.     IT won’t be the grass roots candidates that fracture the GOP but their own pride and arrogance… AS these candidates win – the GOP MUST align themselves with them to secure a win against libs and progressives…IF they don‘t it will delay the reclamation of people’s voices but only for a moment. The stand for what’s right, good and best for the country means you vote for the best candidate ( even if they lose against the machine) and you work to unseat the establishment if they are not representing YOU

Let’s hope that, by time for the general election, some brain power kicks in. Only the New Yorkers could have saved the rape of the taxpayers by Charlie Rangel, and they just flipped all of us off.

      I think Rangel was won the primary (and because it is a heavily Dem. district, most likely the election) because we still have, unfortunately, too many people that have NO knowledge when they go into the voting booth and just see a familiar name and vote for it. Also, pulling out the “racist” card, like Charlie did, still goes down well with some Democrats.

    Congratulations to Mr. Paladino! I saw an interview on Fox News this morning and see a lot of similarity with Mr Paladino’s style and that of Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Arizona! I am certain that his popularity will only grow from this win and would urge Michael Steele and the Republican Party to wake up and support candidates like Mr. Paladino and Ms O’Donnell, otherwise he’ll find himself left behind.

      I would contest the distinction you draw between ideology and “point of view,” but that’s a different story altogether. I’m familiar with Russel Kirk and his definition of Conservatism, but I would venture to say quite a lot of self-identified Tea Party-ers are not. Perhaps you can go around and preach to them.

    “Oh, you just handed the November victory to the democrats,” is the line we hear every time a grassroots conservative upsets an establishment Republican in a primary. It’s a theory worth considering, and then discarding. The fact is that if the establishment Republican can’t make it out of their own primary, with the money and backing of the local, state, and national organizations, then that’s on them. If you don’t want to face the prospect of a democrat winning in November, run a campaign based on principle (and backed by a track record) next time and you won’t have to worry about it.

    But whatever you do, don’t blame the conservative that just handed you your hat for your own loss. That’s on you, buddy. Now, are you going to continue to strike a pose and long for the good ole days when elections were a mere formality, or are you going to shut up and help?

    I support Carl Paladino for NY state gov, but unfortunately, my guess is that Andrew Cuomo will win the general election only because the dopey, uninformed, leftist voters in this state will pull the lever for him based on name recognition only.

      What you fail to understand, DB, is that one of the strategies employed by grassroots conservatives is to involve themselves at the local, state, and national levels within the Republican party in order to transform it from a tired group of career politicians who stand for nothing but preserving power, to a focused group of citizens concerned with American principles. American principles, incidentally, that you are staggeringly unfamiliar with.

      It’s an effective strategy. We are witnessing the beginning of that transformation, and with all such transitions, there will be fissures. So be it.

      It’s not at all unlike what communists, socialists, and environmentalists have done to both parties since the turn of the last century. Snicker all you want as you read this in George Soros’ bathroom, but you ought to be flattered, since your tactics are being employed against you.

      DB, you’re so out of touch with middle America, you can’t even see it. The Tea Party is a new generation of young “fire in the belly” men and women who can see they need to do something now about the direction our political leaders are taking this country. When they get in office there will be change that you can see and feel. They will return this GREAT NATION back to its glory that it once stood for.
      Do you realize that over 40% of congress has been in office for more than 20 years! We’re cleaning out the old geezers, who have made public service a career. I think that the founding fathers would be proud of the Tea Party and what they’re doing to take back America.

      “Dangleingbags”… two things come to mind, new bra or a jock strap. What a name. :)

      I think the Founding Fathers would be rather appalled at the depths to which political rhetoric has sunk within the Tea Party. I think they would be horrified by the search for the lowest possible denominator in public office. After all, aside from Samuel Adams (probably the richest man in Boston), none of the Founding Fathers participated in the original Tea Party, and most of them condemned it.

      You know nothing of the Founding Fathers. Read a book.

      I guess you don’t understand the concept of “the wave”…DB… Similar to what happens in a football stadium. I hope New York residents are as smart and inciteful as I think they are. Cuomo is a puppet; he did a great job when chief of HUD didn’t he ? Stood idly by while yet another massive Government Subsidized Entity (GSE) continued to drive our economy into the ground…. What is your frame of reference for supporting these liberal democrats ? I’m sure your personal bio would tell the story, but of course, you are too cowardly to expose it……..get lost…..this is a conservative site…

      Do not tire or loose focus! Once we kick all the Democrats out of the party that we intend to take over they will join back up with the Socialist/Democrat party where they belong. When we go thru a couple cycles we can get back to having Constitutional constructionalist types back in the Republican robe. The only bummer will be watching Boehner try to understand what has happened. Dbags is not our enemy yet so disregard and do not respond. Our enemy is the established Republicans that have screwed our party up!

      You just keep counting us out. MOST Americans are conservative and sick of what the progressives on BOTH sides of the isle have been doing to us. That goes for the GOP as well as the DNC. People ARE waking up, and when that happens, all these old trolls and their self entitled offspring like Mario’s boy are going to be in for a rude awakening.

      So keep on blathering. It makes for great entertainment. Your are our own little slice of Keith Oberdork, right her on the Blaze, and I love the comedic relief. When that steam roller runs over your mouth in November and 2012, it will be even funnier to hear you try to talk.

      Bags: 19% is pretty hefty when you consider the fact that not only a third of those who can vote, do vote. We are ready to do what we have to do…so just sit back and spout your anger and rhetoric and will take care of the real work. We don’t need the money, we don’t need the democratic party or the republican party. That’s the whole point about this…the people are sick of the partisan bickering and bull. We want it all to end and to start to focus on what is really important bringing the country bacl to respectability.

      As a general rule, liberals attack threats and ignore non-threats.

      The left alternates between vitriolic hatred for the Tea Party and claims that it will destroy the Republican Party (as if that were not a leftists wet dream.) To me, this is proof enough that the Tea Party has the potential to really move this country in the right direction.

      Leaving aside for the moment how laughable it is hearing a ******* tell us what we need to do, there remains the fact that *we* are the Conservatives. The GOP are the ruling class, indistinguishable from the DNC except as regards the rate at which they advance statism.

      We are taking over the GOP, after having punished them in 2008 for forgetting who put them into power in 1994.

      Did I miss the November election? I wouldn’t count any Tea Party candidate out!….Look at Scott Brown, they thought he was a joke running for Kennedy’s seat….Yet, win he did!

      The GOP didn’t leave the Tea Party……They left the GOP and are doing so in record numbers…
