Pro-Israeli Groups Specifically Courting Black Evangelicals

Christian Pro Israel Groups Are Courting African Americans

As volatility continues to flourish in the Middle East, it seems pro-Israeli groups here in America are looking for new ways to garner support for the Jewish state.

After decades of what the Jewish Forward’s Nathan Guttman calls “contention over a range of issues” between blacks and Jews, these mostly Christian organizations are apparently reaching out to African American evangelicals in an effort to formulate a strong alliance. Guttman writes:

Christians United for Israel, the largest non-Jewish, pro-Israel organization in the United States, has scheduled two October events in New York intended to highlight the group’s increased outreach to black evangelicals who hold positive views of the Jewish state. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the pro-Israel Washington lobby, is conducting a similar effort, aimed primarily at African-American student leaders.

While Jewish and blacks once shared a struggle for civil rights here in America, in recent years, there hasn’t been as much uniting the two cohorts. But now, the notion that a bond should be formed surrounding support for Israel is giving new hope for advocates of the Jewish state. Michael Stevens, CUFI’s coordinator of African-American outreach, has the following to say about efforts to re-create a relationship between the two ethnic groups:

“The biblical argument is our first and strongest motivation for supporting Israel, but the next motivation should be this joint history. I firmly believe that Dr. Martin Luther King was a strong African-American Zionist, but I think nine out of 10 African Americans don’t know that.”

Stevens, who is a senior pastor at University City Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, says that he hopes to help blacks realize their community’s strong pro-Jewish core beliefs. Additionally, he plans to work to remind the community about God’s promise in the Bible that those who bless Israel will also be blessed. “This was lost in the past 40 or 50 years,” he says. “And we want to bring it back.”

The group’s web site announced that they had hired Stevens back in 2010. In a statement, the organization recognized the importance of reaching out to blacks to accomplish their mission of gaining support for Israel. The announcement reads:

African American churches are a vital and vibrant part of America’s spiritual life.  We know that if CUFI is to succeed, we need to include the energy and dedication of America’s black churches in our movement. Therefore, CUFI has decided to focus on reaching out to this important community.  Towards this end, we are proud to announce that we have hired Pastor Michael A. Stevens, Sr. as our new African American Outreach Coordinator.

This month, CUFI is living out these ideals and targeting black churches with two events — one on October 25 and another on October 26. These events, called, “Gathering of Solidarity With the State of Israel,” will take place in African-American churches. Already, the group claims to have “many thousands” of black supporters, but has not been specific in stating exactly how many people are on board.

In addition to CUFI’s work in faith communities, AIPAC is targeting college campus which are historically black. In fact, over the past few years, the group has even been taking African American student leaders on trips to Israel.

But despite these efforts, some predominately-black churches have decided not to participate. Rather than jumping on board with a staunchly pro-Israel message, some black Christian leaders are more interested in seeing a conversation develop between Jews and Palestinians. Take, for instance, Bishop John White, whose African Methodist Episcopal Church wants its members to focus more on understanding than on taking sides. White explains:

“Some of the evangelicals support one side and not the other, and I say we should understand that all three religions need to find ways of working together to bring peace.”

Relations between Jews and blacks have an interesting history. During the Civil Rights era, Jewish activists supported blacks and fought against segregation. But later on, leaders like Louis Farrakhan created a wedge, and some began to contend that there was anti-Semitism brewing in some circles.

Furthermore, Guttman reports:

There were also local flashpoints in New York, including one in which Jews bitterly fought a proposed public housing project in the Forest Hills section of Queens in the 1970s, and another when blacks attacked Lubavitch Hasidim, killing one, in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights in 1991.

And in the 1960s, some black leaders openly sided with the Palestinians, depicting Israel as a white country that was oppressing the native population. Much of this rhetoric, though, has since dissipated.

Now, it seems efforts are centered upon gaining black support for Israel in the epic Middle Eastern battles that continue to rage.

    This man is the biggest walking, talking toilet I have ever listened to. He tries to talk in this calm and peaceful tone and then migrates to his usual rant about the JEWS or some other anti West tirade. This peace of dung reviles ISLAM to us infidels and allows us to see its real face. Either it exposes itself as (a hating murderous religion) or he is a horrendous representative of that religion and should be drummed out like those in other religions that have been exposed and run out. We all have two choices; either we submit to their way of life or we stand up and bring AMERICA back to where it once stood. The bright shining city on the hill that did what was right, stood for what was right. The only way to do that is to start with yourselves and then hold your elected representatives accountable to do the same. God needs to be the center of this country or we are doomed to die. I don‘t care if you don’t believe in God or not just look at the history of any (atheist) country and look at its history and how it turned into a dung heap. If you are a Muslim and want what is right for the world., grow a set and stand up against those who tear up your religion by turning those monsters into the authorities or better yet sending them quickly to Allah.

    The modern nation of Israel is not viewed by many (not just Blacks) – as the descendants of the Hebrew) people of the bible. Those who are Israelis today are mostly Europeans whose ancestors were proselytized by the Jews of the bible the late Roman Empire. So that the right to enter Palestine and displace Palestinian Muslims, Christians, and Jews is not so much a religious issue as ethnic. Blacks certainly identify with that. We don’t need to be pro-Israel or pro-Palestinian – we just have to be Pro-Jesus! No matter whose a Jew and whose not. What really matters is that we love GOD and one another!

    I think a lot of Jews are atheist that is why so many are liberals. They question God on why he allowed so much pain and suffering at the hand of Hitler. For them, how could a God who chose them as his elect allow millions to die in ovens. Plus, they haven’t done what they were required to do, carry Torah to the nations, but they will. Then you will see a miracle.
    I don‘t understand Hagee telling Jews they didn’t have to believe in Jesus in order to go to heaven. I think Hagee needs to read his bible and Glenn needs a good messianic rabbi for bible study and one who will show him how he is not following a biblical doctrine.

      JES, I sincerely don’t dislike Jews but I will call them out! My neighbor is Jewish and a senior citizen and has a heavy Russian accent and I have to listen super close to understand! He‘s the funny guy you’ll ever meet, has a super dry sense of humor! I do all kinds of stuff for he and his wife and he wants to pay me but I will never except! Actually I like 97% of all the Jews I personally know and they would stick up for me if anyone accused me of antisemitism! I as a Catholic believe that God in the Bible is referring to the Spiritual Israel and not the country like Evangelicals but I know that God would not like me to do anything to any of his children regardless of race or religion! I just want Jews to put America above Israel and to assimilate! God Bless!

    the whole idea of sending money to Israel is to receive a personal Blessing from the LORD. It is not the usual charity donation. Look at the condition of Israel after only 63 years of reinstating the nation.It is obvious they take care of their own also. There are Many different groups living in Israel today, and are very happy to be there. They are praying that it stays this way. The Zionist\Hebrew\Jew is a wide range of skin color.     look, i love Israel too, but we are Holding them back… they could have fought back against Iran YEARS AGO, but we didn’t let them… I‘m really starting to think it’s not a Pro-Israel movement but an Anti-Muslim movement…. Look, i’m a Christian… i accept Jesus Christ as my Saviour. But, the fact is, every individual on this planet has a right to their own beliefs as long as they aren’t infringing on anyone elses rights… It’s not our place to judge and execute anyone, but to lead by example and spread the good word of God through our daily actions…
    * i’m for self defense, helping other nations when they WANT it and if it’s approved by The People (Congress). Otherwise, we need to keep our noses out of other peoples business. Anyone can start a charity in support of Israel and give them aid… it’s their God given Right. Glenn has the resources and means to start the largest Israel charity in the entire world… he could probably fund a good part of Israel on his income alone… Just saying… why is it SO important for Our Tax Dollars to fund Israel? that means Our Government controls them… if it was Charity Based… it would be out of Love and not out of Control. It’s a fact that when the Federal Government gives Anyone tax dollars, they regulate Everything they do even more than they already do. Ask Any State in America who recieves Federal Tax Dollars. They threaten them with ultimatums…

      I stand with Israel,because Gods Holy Word tells us to,and i pronounce blessings upon Israel,but to JB.Kibs,you are right on,America needs to allow Israel to become totally independent,I am all for Christain groups sending aid to Israel,but I want Israel to be able to make their own decisions and not be afraid to do something thinking it might make the United States angry,Israel’s hands have been tied,it’s time to release them,they can take care of Iran,I also know Bible prophesy has to be fullfilled,so I say come quickly Lord Jesus.

    What most Tea Party members/Cain/Bachman/Beck/Christians don’t realized is that the GOP war/bank machine hijacked the movement with Palin/West/Fox News and many others.

    The original Tea Party was based on the Constitution, not religion! There are many views on religion. The Founding Fathers were Libertarian Christians who wrote the Constitution so America wouldn’t be torn apart with various religious views.

      The original Tea Party was not about the Constitution, it was about protesting Taxation Without Representation when King Edward III placed a tax of one penny per pound on tea coming into the colonies, something that had never before been taxed. At that time one penny was a rather large sum for a tax. The Constitution was not written for another 20 years or so after the Boston Tea Party. At the time of the Tea Party, 1773, the tea tax was imposed in addition to a couple of other taxes, but the colonies were allowed no representation in Parliment and were not allowed to bring their grievances before the King. This action planted the seeds of revolution which eventually resulted in our Independence. So endeth the history lesson.

      Today’s TEA Party is about a group (53%) that pay all the Federal Income Tax . They are supposedly represented by DEMOCRATS like Barry that accuse them of not paying for ever increasing quantities of Spending. Lexington, Concord and the Battle of Bunker Hill resulted from Excessive Taxation, and the Arrogance of King George or King Barry.

      Welll it’s primarily FOX News. They are the head of the snake. They are the ulitmate sponsors of the Neo-Con policies. it all flows down from FOX News.. Ole Brent Humes stated w/ Kraughthammer by his side that if you didn’t support the Neo-Con’s Middle Eastern offensive then you were not a true Reagan Conservative.. I almost choked and fell out when I that garbage come out of his mouth.. And he said it with a straight face.

      Mind you Ronald Reagan had enough sense to withdraw our troops from Lebanon after the Marine barracks were bombed.. He didn’t go on the offensive and he did not start a War over it. But Brent thinks that Reagan was Neo-Con like him and his FOX News cohorts.

      Since the Tea Party is for ALL AMERICANS who value the Constitution, tell me how a atheist fits your group of war/Israel supporters? Tell me how a gay person would feel sitting at a Tea Party, or a Muslim as you pray to one aspect of God (yours)? That’s why the Tea Party is labeled racist by the left.

      My point is that the Tea Party Movement was NOT ABOUT RELIGION, and like the Constitution, I feel religion should have been kept out of it. Can’t people discuss America without using Biblical quotes? Why can‘t you quote the Constitution if you feel your words alone don’t have weight?

      When I first started going to Tea Party meetings, and the preacher (who was leading the group and always praying as a group) I felt it was wrong (because I knew some people there who were patriotic, but not Christian). I’m a Christian, so I certainly didn’t speak out against prayer.

      So here we are today — the Tea Party divided, with some ideas that aren’t Constitutional, and things aren’t one bit better (America divided). You may as well be a plain ole GOP Republican and forget the Tea Party. They are one and the same. The GOP wanted the Tea Party to rile-up Republicans, just like Obama wants the occupy movevent to rile-up the left. They both got their wish.

      Tech, Brent was staunch conservative on Fox New Sunday where he was free to give his opinion but after he retired and said he was going to spend time studying the Bible he turned into a Bill O’Reilly moderate too! Zionism has turned many conservatives into zombies! After the Israeli lobby goes after these guys they lose their souls like some heroin addict but their hooked on Jew worship! They will say or do anything for Israel more so than Jews! Lol! Hannity a Catholic in name only ripped a Catholic Priest on his show about contraception but will go bonkers if you say one word criticizing Israel!!! It’s like they are spell bound!

      Fox News built up Mr. Cain, because he was new, because he’s black. O’Reilly said Mr. Cain couldn’t win, that the GOP has promised Romney the nomination already. Fox ignored Dr. Paul completely. Now, I see Fox TEARING DOWN Mr. Cain! Build him up, just to tear him down? That’s dirty of Fox. When O’Reilly comes on tv, I switch the channel to Fox Business News “Freedom Watch.” to learn about the news of the day and the CONSTITUTION.

    And this is news? Black Evangelical Christians, especially Baptists, have always been very pro-Israel. These are people who have read the Old Testament cover-to-cover, and often take it literally. According to them, if Israel falls to the Satanic Army (Islamic terrorism) then the world is doomed.

      I’m against American intervention as it has caused most of the misery in the world during the last 40 years. Because I’m against the war-pushing Democrats and Republicans, does NOT mean that I don’t stand with Israel. I believe my anti-war stance is GOOD for Israel.

      Christians for war and killing, I don’t understand.
      I’m a Christian, and I know in my heart it’s wrong.
