Why Did Joe Scarborough Mock Chris Matthews After Matthews Called Cheney ‘a Mistake’?

During a Monday broadcast of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” political commentator Chris Matthews stopped by to discuss a wide range of campaign issues, including former Vice President Dick Cheney’s claim that Sen. John McCain’s decision to pick former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his VP was “a mistake.”

(Related: Dick Cheney: Picking Sarah Palin for VP Was a ‘Mistake’)

“Chris Matthews, what do you make of Dick Cheney yesterday saying that Sarah Palin was a mistake as a VP pick? I want you to take a listen to this and then respond  –”

“I think Cheney was a mistake,” Matthews interjected.

Matthews on Cheneys Palin Dig: I Think Cheney Was a Mistake“We will also allow you to pronounce his last name however you want to pronounce,” Scarborough interrupted, poking fun at Matthews‘ habit of pronouncing the former Vice President’s name as “chee-nee.”

“Joe, you’re wrong.”

“Chris, I just said after we play the sound bite, you can call him what you want.”

“No, no, his name is Cheney,” Matthews said, again pronouncing it as “chee-nee.”

“All right.”

The MSNBC crew played a video of the former Vice President saying the following about former Gov. Palin:

I like Governor Palin. I have met her, I know her. She’s an attractive candidate, but based on her background, she had only been governor for two years, I don’t think she passed that test.

[…]

I think that was a mistake.

“Chris Mee-thews, what say you?” Scarborough asked, again poking fun at Matthews.

“No, it’s not a joke. His name is Cheney, by the way. When we all check it out we‘ll know what we’re talking about instead of me just snowing. Do some reporting. I think Cheney is a problem. I think he’s pretty much hated in this country. People really don’t like him,” Matthews responded.

He continued:

I can‘t believe they’re going to show him at the convention. He‘s perked up to show up on Sunday TV to make sure that he’s still in the news. I think it’s sort of a proof of life thing. I think he’s good at it. Just show you’re in the game. I think it’s smart politics for Cheney as always to stay in the game.

WOW!! Never thought I’d agree with Matthews on anything! But his comment about Cheney being a mistake was right on target. I’d pick Palin anyday over Cheney! He’s one that has caved into the Homosexual radicals and extremist at the expense of the real family. So, in my view, he’s no better than BLOBAMA or any of the RAINBOW Shirts he surrounds himself with.

At least Sarah Palin was healthy and had more experience than Barry. Dick Cheney was on life support during his tenure. Women in politics get no respect from both aisles. That is why the Republicans will choose another good ole boring white guy to be VP…

I was impressed by and defending Sarah Palin when everything erupted in 2008.. But in retrospect, with all her accomplishments and talents Cheney is correct – she wasnt ready to be President if something happend to McCain – and it has nothing to do with her gender (which I share). Just one of the many ways the McCain campaign was a terribly managed campaign with a mediocre candidate (who I did vote for). With that said – she was still more qualified to be President than Barack Obama ever was or is to this very day.

@BTERI. You wrote what I was thinking. However, upon reading that, I began to reevaluate my thoughts. This is only speculation, for sure, but if we could go back to January 2009, and be given a choice of who would have been the best president to steady the economy, Obama, Biden, McCain, or Palin, I would bet it would have been Palin. Interestingly, where admittedly she was weak on foreign policy, I think we would have been better off in foreign affairs also. I suspect that she would have surrounded herself with good advisors and her record as governor indicated that she was more than capable in making decisions.

She had only been governor for 2 years! I find it interesting how they can comment on the lack of experience of other people (Republicans) when Obama was a community organizer and a senator for 2 weeks, how much experience did he have? I feel he had none, therefore, he should leave come January.

      @blv

Did you not pay attention to the 2008 campaign? Of course it was brought up that President Obama lacked a lot of experience. I was on the Sarah Palin bandwagon when it was new and exciting (kinda like all of those who were for Obama) but as I wised up I and many people realized that she was more shine than a realistic winning candidate. It would have served her better to continue being Governor and perhaps run for Senate but instead she chose to quite for the book and talk show circuit. Why else do you think she didn’t try to run this year?

So this is a lame story about the lamestream media. Joe can’t remember what he is today and most other days other than irrelevant (of course HE thinks he’s the most important being at the table, after all he has COFFEE named after him or is that the other way around), kind of like the House and the Senate. If he and Chris weren‘t brought up here they’d be even less relevant.

Are you saying VP Cheney is not a real conservative, or are you just tossing out a pejorative? Sounds like you either don’t know what a neoconservative is, or your opinion of Cheney is skewed for a reason unassociated with his conservative credentials…or you’re one of the grossly uninformed fans of Chris Matthews who “hate” Cheney because it’s cool in your world.

1: a former liberal espousing political conservatism
2: a conservative who advocates the assertive promotion of democracy and United States national interest in international affairs including through military means

Cheney was the most active VP I’ve known. Did the government expand or shrink under his watch? As for the war mongering for democracy… Only a twit would argue he doesn’t fit into that category.
