Why Did Soccer’s Real Madrid Remove the Cross From Its Logo?

What’s the difference between these two versions of the Real Madrid soccer team’s logo?

Real Madrid removes the cross from its logo why?

The logo on the left is the typical one used by the massively popular Real Madrid soccer team. It is still the logo seen on the club’s web site. The one on the right is the new, edited version that will be used to promote the new, billion dollar Real Madrid resort island being built in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Did you notice that the small cross atop the crown was removed?

If you are not familiar with the soccer world, Real Madrid is on par with other globally-recognized professional sports franchises like the New York Yankees or the Dallas Cowboys. They are a brand with annual revenues over $500,000 million and an estimated net worth of almost $2 billion dollars.

The Real Madrid history is a rich one, dating back to 1902.

Real Madrid was founded in 1902, and it is the pride of all Los Madridistas. A Harvard University study on football determined that Madrid is also the most popular team in the world, with more than 228 million supporters.

Let‘s take a look at the different logos used by Real Madrid through the team’s first 110 years.

Real Madrid removes the cross from its logo why?

There are anecdotal reports that claim the  1920-31 logo using the crown was approved by Spain’s King Alfonso XIII back in 1920. It disappeared from the uniforms from 1931-1941. After the Spanish Civil War ended, the crown returned and has been present on the team’s logos and uniforms for the past 71 years.

And then came the Real Madrid sports island/theme park.

Here’s another look at the logo as it appears in the promotional materials for the island.

Real Madrid removes the cross from its logo why?

Yahoo Sports reports on the history of the crown (with the cross) on the team’s uniforms.

The cross has only been a part of the club‘s crest because it was a part of King Alfonso XIII’s crown, which was added to the crest in 1920 when he granted the club his royal patronage and their name changed from Madrid Club de Futbol to Real Madrid. All the royal symbols were then removed from the club’s crest and name in 1931 when the monarchy was dissolved, though they were restored at the end of the Spanish civil war in 1941 and have remained since.

And so, the crown with the cross has been part of the team’s logo for more than 70 years. So why should it be removed? Yahoo’s Brook Peck referred to the removal of the cross as a “small, but deliberate change.”

Deliberate? That’s a good word for it. Some are pushing the change as “good business” while others say that it smacks of religious intolerance and censorship.

The cross remains on Real Madrid’s logo everywhere else. It is only removed from the logos in the new theme park being built in the UAE. You have to wonder, is there a concern that a tiny cross atop the crown might keep non-Christians away from the park’s amazing, waterfront stadium, gift shops, museum, hotel, and amusement park?

If you want to see what’s being planned for the new Real Madrid Theme Park, watch the promo clip here.

Despite the fact that not a single christian blazer on these threads will have ever heard of Real Madrid or maybe even the United Arab Emirates, I’m sure none of them will have any trouble starting an uproar over this transgression against the baby jesus.

You sir are non compos mentis.

Real Madrid if a fine team though I prefer Barcelona
and have a long relationship with Liverpool and Manchester United, teams I have followed since childhood.
Of course you also have Bayern Munchen which was one of my favorites for some time, at least till some crucial players left.

As for the UAE…if you pay any attention to world, you’re aware of the UAE. Even if it’s only knowing that many of the worlds construction cranes are the building arguably the most amazing skyscrapers in history of mankind. Where the is now a city pushing the envelope of technology and future that emerged up from the sands like a mirage.

      You would be wrong.
A professional soccer team wants to build a resort in a muslim country?
This has nothing to do with religion.
And they leave a cross off their logo?
      I don’t care one bit.

Now, if the UAE asked all the Catholic churches in their country
      to leave the crosses out…………….
      What? They‘re aren’t?

Noted, although I don‘t think I’d be going out on a limb in assuming you are the exception and not the rule. Considering you made the simple, rational deduction that Madrid has every right to remove religious symbols from its logo, I’d say you depart pretty dramatically from majority opinion at the blaze.

How would Americans react if a muslim soccer team lent their name to an American theme park and the crescent were removed? It would be considered an act of bigotry and hate. Just saying. And there would be supreme court rulings.

I don’t see a cross in any of the eight logos following this remark. I only see it in the image in the intro. Really, this is a soccer. There’s been no cross a hundred years, and none, except the one this website says is “typically used.”

Sorry, but as stupid topics go, this ranks among the most stupid. We’re talking about soccer here. Oh please shut up.

@ THEPOSTMAN: They voluntarily removed it. It wasn’t removed from some legal ruling by the UAE. In your example, if the Muslim football team removed the crescent voluntarily, it would be considered an act of cultural sensitivity.

Right with you. Christian, Blazer and a La Liga fan…hat trick. I appreciate the talent of Real, but it is all bought and sold. Barcelona grooms talent in their youth programs. Real acts like spoiled brats and Barcelona, gentlemen. Contrast Ronaldo and Messi. This non-controversy isn’t surprising because Real is all about $$$…making and spending it. If you want to ignore the trend of removing Christian symbols from team logos, nicknames and municipal seals and from monuments, go ahead. Convervsely…the “tolerant” faith of Islam does not allow religious images outside of Islam to be displayed publically or privately in Muslim lands anyway. Real Madrid is a heavy hitter in the soccer world and worth a lot of money. To do business in Arabia they have to forsake any christian images even ones as innocuous as a cross on a crown on a logo.

Indeed. It is required of the Jihad to erase any vestige of the previous culture. In this case, it is the symbols of Christianity that are the target. While Christians may bicker amongst themselves as to the merits of iconography, the Jihadis care only that anything non-Islamic be destroyed and replaced with their symbols, their icons, their religious institutions.

Given the choice, I will select the “blasphemy” of a cross over the abomination that is Islam.

So form a baseball team if they are good enough I’m sure we could get an American team to play the winner of the Japanese, Cuban, Dominican, Venezuelan, Taiwanese, English playoff. Oh and you can keep cricket.

@ Sol Invictus: So your name ‘Sol Invictus’ means ‘Invincible Sun,’ yes? Really?? Wow, someone here has a very high opinion of themselves when they’re so obviously limp-wristed and gay.

Didn’t say they are invincible. Just said the best players from those other countries end up in MLB.

How old are you? 16? Seriously, you respond back by calling him a name? Why?Because you couldn’t think of anything else to come back with? Grow up.

      @Sol Invictus

Congratulations!!!!!…..You’ve just won the “Encinom Award” for the most stupid comment of the day!!!

They weren’t comparing the sports per se, they were comparing the franchise and the meaning of those teams to their respective countries and fans. The sports aren’t made to compare between them. They are just what they are, and are the result of different cultures and activities among different countries and periods of time.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi, Tim Teabow and Lin can’t ride a bicycle as Armstrong does, so are they less sportsmen as he is?……they are just made and trained for their respective field…that’s all….“Different strokes for different folks”.

Real Madrid would say that they are just being pragmatic. If the sport had existed in the 8th Century they surely would have removed it from 711 to 1492 as well.

Despite the fact that not a single christian blazer on these threads will have ever heard of Real Madrid or maybe even the United Arab Emirates, I’m sure none of them will have any trouble starting an uproar over this transgression against the baby jesus.

Yeah we’re huge football fans in our house. Not only have we heard of them but we seem to have conversations about Cristiano Ronaldo at least once a week. I could care less if RM wants to remove the cross from their logo. What, are they going to play football in the name of Christ? If they aren’t being made to remove it by the powers that be, I could care less.

As a quasi religious individual, might I point out all that the “intelligent” among us have brought to the table..weapons, bombs, a-bomb, pollution, wasn’t it the medical field that stated homosexuality was a mental disease, let us not forget frivolous lawsuits by lawyers, idiotic laws by politicians, education practices that are tearing apart our education system.

Ah, yes, intelligence always has the answers.

If you’re arguing that ignorance is preferable to intelligence, then I‘m afraid you’re a bit more than quasi-religious.

Only an antagonist would post a comment like that with a link to ignorance. And if you really know something about the history of the Cross as a Christian icon you would know that it was not until 315AD that it was even considered. The early Christian church did not believe in lconism since it was against the 2nd Commandment laid down by God at Mt. Sinai to Moses. It should be the same today but Christianity has been infected with Iconism from the “Roman” Catholic Church era.

My faith is not shaken when someone removes a cross or has one removed from property since Jesus never worshipped at a cross he worshipped at the Temple yearly in Jerusalem. And yes Christianity was a “Cult” (offshoot) of Judaism since its original followers were primarily Jews.

A link to ignorance? Tell me with a straight face that religion does not appeal to the meekest intellects among us. Look at the threads on the blaze and tell me that you reject the idea that religiosity is negatively correlated to intelligence. If you truly believe that intelligence begets religiosity, then I‘m afraid you’re not as well informed on the true nature of Christianity as you claim to be.

Wow that link to wikipedia is spot on! Religious people have not contributed one iota to the scientific community at large. People that can afford higher education are by no means materialistic and skipping church to stand in line for the next Ipad. Being (upper)middle class has no bearing if you’re religious or not which is why all of Africa is atheist… nah that couldn’t have any bearing on the outcome of the poll. When you ask someone on the street if they are religious they can answer honestly and open because this isn’t a world of extremes. Answering yes doesn’t immediately put you in the Jesus Freak camp. Thanks for the link I’ll be sure to add it to my bookmarks!

Actually I’m a strict fiscal conservative, might even call myself a libertarian although I’m undecided on certain law and order principles (drugs, gun law, etc.). The reason I admittedly enjoy antagonizing on here is because I’m so ashamed of the abomination that used to be the party of fiscal conservatism in this country. Somewhere along the line, candidates began to realize that the best way to consolidate support was to pander to the visceral paranoia and self-righteousness of our christian majority (flawlessly embodied by this website and its readership), and being a republican suddenly became pretty torturous to those of us that still believe in education, diplomacy, and secular government. The delirious, apocalyptic rhetoric found on this site is the reason conservatism no longer has a credible voice in this country.

Oh Andy, I knew there was a reason for all your hate. It’s because your beloved party has been taken over by a bunch of religion imposing progressives.

Well you have my sympathy. I too have watched the republican party usurped by the international progressives, world govt types and big govt chickenhawks. But I have faith. Faith that one day we will turn these people around by prayer, logic and reason, not by mocking their beliefs.

      God Bless.
