Education

Why Is a California Teachers Union So Anti-Israel?

Teachers unions have historically been formed to protect the rights of faculty members through collective bargaining. So, why would the California Faculty Association, a union from the largest state university system in the country go out of its way to issue an resolution that is decidedly anti-Israel? Additionally, why is a teachers union even spending time discussing, debating and passing a resolution about Israel and the Palestinians? Let’s drill down into the union for more information.

The CFA (the California Faculty Association) claims to be a union which exists to support the teachers California’s colleges and universities. From their own website;

CFA stands for:

  • Quality education for our students
  • Fairness for those of us who earn our living as teachers
  • Policies that ensure access to higher education

That all sounds fairly typical of a teachers union; deliver quality education, get paid a decent salary and push so more people can gain access to the schools (guaranteeing continued employment). No big deal, right?

The union also states;

We are a union of 23,000 professors, lecturers, librarians, counselors and coaches who teach in the California State University system. In classrooms on the 23 CSU campuses, CFA members work hard to teach our students the critical-thinking skills, the technical know-how and the cultural insights they need to be thoughtful, productive and artistic participants in our society.

Great! All of that sounds swell. Digging a little deeper into the CFA’s history reveals some surprising ideas.

In 2009 the union adopted a resolution in 2009 titled, “CFA Call for a Halt to Violence Against All Civilians in Palestine and Israel.” The resolution is so patently Anti-Israel, that Leila Beckwith, a former UCLA professor, wrote the following in early 2010 for the American Thinker;

The resolution states seven propositions that form the basis for the actions recommended. The propositions include affirming a moral equivalence between Israel defending its citizens from missile attacks and Hamas firing missiles against Israeli civilians, a misstatement of the conditions in Gaza, an omission of the U.N. Security Council’s condemnation of acts of terrorism, and a false charge against the U.S. of not seeking a just peace agreement.

The suspect resolution was spearheaded by CFA board member Manzar Foroohar, a history professor with an obvious anti-Israel bias. Who is Manzar Foroohar? Lee Kaplan reports for FrontPageMag.com;

Manzar Foroohar, an Iranian immigrant and history professor specializing in the modern Middle East and Latin America at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo—came to the fore. However, the extent of her involvement was never publicly acknowledged. In fact, Foroohar authored and championed the resolution, which was presented by the CFA Peace & Justice Committee (Committee), unanimously adopted by the CFA Board of Directors on February 7, 2009, and passed by the CFA General Assembly in Sacramento on April 4-5 that same year.

Kaplan continues;

A cursory review of Foroohar’s academic work at Cal Poly reveals that she donates a good deal of her time both inside and outside the classroom to demonizing Israel, particularly by promoting boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS). Indeed, Foroohar, along with a number of Middle East studies academics teaching in California, is on the organizing committee for the U.S. Campaign for the Academic & Cultural Boycott of Israel, a group that works internationally to promote BDS.

BDS – Boycott, Divestment, & Sanctions. Does that sound like the basic planks of education you might expect a student to be learning in college?

Mr. Kaplan’s research discovered that Ms. Foroohar’s personal bias against Israel has been public for almost a decade, but recently have become more pronounced;

Foroohar gave lectures at California State University, Sacramento, in February 2009 titled, “Occupation of Palestine: The Obstacle to Peace“ and ”Zionism and Peace: Compatible or Contradictory Ideas?” In March 2009, she took part in a panel discussion at the University of Southern California titled, “From la Frontera to Gaza: Chicano-Palestinian Connections.” She presented a slide show and discussion at California State University, Fresno, in October 2002, on “Occupation and Resistance.” In May 2005, Foroohar moderated a discussion session at Cal Poly following a Muslim Student Association co-sponsored screening of several anti-Israel “documentaries,” including Peace, Propaganda & the Promised Land.

Based on her continued actions, and the resolution she is alleged to have written and pushed through the CFA, Ms. Foroohar’s personal beliefs on Israel appear to be creeping into the CFA.  Again the question should be raised, ‘Why is a teachers union so involved in Middle East politics?’

We looked to the union for answers. Their web page has the following ‘Mission Statement’ (from the CFA’s Peace & Justice Committee);

Our Principles

To protect our members and the lives and livelihoods of working people everywhere, we will advocate, educate and mobilize in the US labor movement for:

• A Just Foreign Policy that will bring genuine security and prosperity to working people. A policy that strengthens international treaties, supports human rights institutions, respects national sovereignty and upholds the right of self-determination for all peoples. $ A foreign policy that solves disputes by diplomacy rather than war. $ A policy that promotes global economic and social justice rather than the race-to-the-bottom, job-destroying, discriminatory practices favored by multinational corporations.

The opening paragraph of the CALIFORNIA Faculty Association says almost nothing about education, instead it focuses on ‘GLOBAL ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL JUSTICE.’  But wait, there’s more. The very next item in the Mission Statement says the following;

• An end to U.S. Occupation of Foreign Countries, replaced by the reconstruction of war-devastated nations with the full support of the international community and the full participation and decision-making power of affected peoples.

Again, nothing about educating students or providing a better working environment for teachers. There must be something about teachers pay and benefits in the next paragraph. Right?

• Redirecting the Nation’s Resources from inflated military spending to meeting the needs of working families for health care, education, a clean environment, housing and a decent standard of living based on principles of equality and democracy.

This one at least mentions the word ‘education’ – even if it is buried among what sounds like the basic promises of most Socialist organizations.

The CFA mission statement wraps up with three final goals;

• Supporting Our Troops and their Families by bringing the troops home now, by not recklessly putting them in harm’s way and by providing decent compensation, veterans’ benefits and domestic policies administered without discrimination that prioritize the needs of working people who make up the bulk of the military.

• Protecting Workers’ Rights, Civil Rights, Civil Liberties and the Rights of Immigrants by promoting democracy, not subverting it. Ethnic, racial and religious profiling and stereotyping must be replaced by policies that promote dignity, economic justice and respect for all working people.

• Solidarity With Workers and their Organizations Around the World who are struggling for their own labor and human rights, and with those in the U.S. who want US foreign and domestic policies to reflect our nation’s highest ideals.

It might be of interest to know that the CFA is also connected to SEIU, the large and powerful union that President Obama told, ‘SEIU’s agenda is MY agenda.‘ Let’s not forget that SEIU reportedly spent $60 million dollars to get Barack Obama elected in 2008.

The CFA is SEIU Local 1983.

Any questions?

H/T to the tireless members of the 9-12Project for bringing this to our attention.

    Communists have always worn the union label as their mask. Remember the American labor movement of the early 1900′s? Anyone would be hard pressed to argue against the fact that most labor leaders of that time were communists. The fact that communism has failed in Russia, Easteran Europe, Cuba and many other places will not stop the left wing in America from trying to follow the same path. I understand why the American Left would like to see America communistic, I don’t understand their love affair with Islam and hatefulness of Isreal.

      You know, that most of far-left crazies do not believe in any kind of God. It’s more of a statement to the political right, saying “why should your God be more important than Allah?”. They don’t believe in Allah or the Christian God, so it really doesn’t matter to them at all.

      The thing is that, our Constitution and all of the Laws of our Land, are based on Judea-Christian concepts. None of the Laws of the USA came from the Islamic religion.

      The Judea-Christian religious Laws are all good, like thy shall not kill; thy shall not steal; thy shall not commit adultery; and thy shall not covet thy neighbors wealth. The Jewish and Christian religions, both have these ideals. Islam also has these ideals, but they subjugate females in their religion.

      Islam, also has the position that their religion is superior to all other religions. The far-left people haven’t got it yet, but Muslims intend everyone to be Muslim, or dead.

      I don’t know about that. I know people that work for cities and States, and they’re regular nice people. They’re mainly “paper pushers” also known as clerical workers. The ones that I know, are really non-political, and just want to do the job they were hired for.

      I don’t think that taking their right to vote is a good idea. Poll watchers would be a better idea. We need to make certain that every vote comes from a real citizen. We also need to make sure that our citizens in the military have their votes counted.

    While I’m a staunch supporter of Israel’s right to exist I do see how (if you take away all purely Biblical arguments) Israel’s heavy-handed methods in some (say again – in some) areas do bring some self inflicted disdain & scrutiny. They certainly need a better public awareness & outreach program if they are going to survive the growing discontent from the world & from within. & teachers’ unions should definitely worry about public education in their jurisdiction & stay out of international politics.

      In rocket & mortar defense & in many other areas Israel is absolutely justified in defending itself (even pre-emptively)! You may notice that I said “in some (say again – in some) areas “ they were occasionally heavy-handed e.g. bulldozing the houses of relatives of terrorists, blockading medical supplies, & a small # of other areas they need to do themselves a favor & appear magnanimous – there needs to be just a bit of carrot along w/ the stick.

      You are indeed a buffoon…he never said Gorilla, he said “silverback Chewbacca”…YOU said Gorilla. a gorilla is a gorilla …silverback is a term often used when referring to a dominant MALE gorilla that has achieved an age where the hair, mainly on the back (hence the term silverback) turns grey. It is also used in refering to older males many different species including wild boar, bear, and even old bucks….possibly even Wookies (a StarWars geek would know).
      But, I understand your need to be all defensive about your post…after all, you read a reference to the first lady that compared her to an old Wookie and assumed the adjective and not the noun was the subject.

Digging for complaints against them while ignoring what the vast majority of unions stand for is just repubs trying to ignore their own attacks against the american way of life.

      “ Teachers unions should worry about teachers” … That’s it in a nutshell. Teachers have nothing TO worry about. There is no logical reason for them to even HAVE a union! The same goes for ANY public worker! They are not working in a coal mine in the 1920′s! The only reason these unions exist is to raise money for themselves and for their communist agenda with the union members,themselves, being the “useful idiots”.

      “All pro-Israel (or all sane) teachers”

      You cannot both be pro-Israel and sane.

      You have the internet at your command. You have the largest collection of information and data in the history of mankind at your fingertips. USE IT. Israel is not interested in peace with Palestine and would wipe it off the map if it could sell it. It is aggressively pushing a colonization effort and displacing people who have lived there for a long, long time.

      Please note that I am not for the death of every single Jew or the destruction of Israel or whatever you numbskulls will probably type in the response to this post. Both Israel and Palestine are at fault, but while Palestine has tried to actually negotiate for peace (See. The Palestine Papers in which Palestine basically offered Israel EVERYTHING IT WANTED yet Israel still declined this almost self-destructive peace offering) Israel is not in any way interested in that.

      Also note that I have no problem with the Israelis or Jews but with the acts of the Israeli government and their government only.

      There will be peace in Israel if Israel actually works for peace which has not, to this point, happened. All that happens is Israel intruding more and more into Palestine, the world condemning those actions, America condemning those actions (besides, demanding 1967 borders has been the official policy of American presidents since probably Nixon) and Israel continuing with whatever it wants to do. Some consent needs to be found.

      @ROSE-ELLEN

      You are woefully ignorant of world history. The land from the Red Sea to Lebanon was all a part of Judea the original homeland of the Jewish race. The Romans destroyed the temple in 70AD and scattered the Jewish people. They then renamed the area “Palestine” the Roman name for Philistia, home of the Phlistines, the Judeans most mortal enemies. The renaming was meant as an insult to the Jews.

      If you will read Mark Twain’s description of the area in the late 1800s, he described it as a barren land where almost no one could be found. It wasn’t until Isreal was created that the land began to blossom again.

      The UN gave the Jewish people just a part of what was historically theirs for centuries prior to the roman Invasion. It took 2000 years for them to return to THEIR homeland. The Palestinians, listening to the likes of Ahminijad of Iran, are trying to recerate the Holocost all over again. I suggest that you read Grant Jefferies book,” Everlasting Hatred, The Roots of Jihad” to better understand why the Arabs hate Isreal. It is a Satanic hatred, fueled by lunatics just like Hitler, Lenin and Trotsky along with many other anti Semitic rulers of the past.

      GOD will protect HIS people.

Crporate welfare has got to be phased out ….. both private and public. We also need to phase-out the bankers union… they make teacher unions look like charity organizations. California is the last gasp of Liberalism. Herr Jerry Brown will try to goosestep the state into the social good and try to convince all who still has money to contribute to the social welfare. There will be a mass exodus of all money in the state. The only “Money” that will be left is the insanely stupid. As the state coffers dwindle, you will see the true face of the left, they will start to seize assets, punish success and will start lawsuits against anyone who tries to take their money and run. There will be social chaos as that state collapses. I lived there and I know how they think. If you aren’t willing to give your checkbook to the state, you are a traitor.

      An associated link in the American Thinker story shows another union, the California Federation of Teachers, acting similarly. You will be unsettled when you look at the list of their committees. http://www.cft.org/index.php/committees.html especially the “Labor In The Schools Committee”.
      In fact, as you cruise around their site, one’s mouth drops open from time to time.

      Have a look at what her students have to say about her. This is revealing and a great source of comfort. http://pr2.sigkill.com/eval.phtml?profid=213

      As you chase all the links, you find that Ms Foroohar is a scurrilous political activist who is utterly lacking in integrity. She associates with similar types of people and is bilking the US education system by using her paid time for her political cause.

      I usually find that those who claim to be such ‘critical thinkers’ are often more critical than thoughtful.

      I also noted from the policy statement that CFA has to draw a moral equivalence between an attack and responding to one. That seems the only way they can condemn Israel (as they first intend), while seeming to not support terror against her. It’s like saying a person who defends himself against an assault is just as bad or guilty as the assailant.

      Yes, I noted that myself. If I was an American parent, I would be alarmed. Actually, I am alarmed anyway, as these political causes, attitudes, and strategies move from country to country gathering strength as they go (”well, this is what they do in [insert nation's names] so it is clearly a good thing”).

      As I dig further into this, I note two things; she is far from alone, and she is actively concealing herself. The second is most curious. Why is she (or her supporters) going to this trouble? What do they fear?

      They fear being seen, in my opinion, because their agendas cannot survive public scrutiny. They must operate in the background creating laws and practices that will be hard to unpick when the general public finally wakes up. What she and her fellow travellers need is the scorching heat from the blow torch of publicity applied to their buttocks. This was done to Van Jones, Piven, Soros, the SEIU, and others with quite satisfactory results.

      And the reason why they are in the schools, and why they dominate teacher’s unions, is obvious. They must persuade as many of the upcoming generation to their side as possible, or they will not survive. Not in western countries, anyway.

      You may note in the student’s comments that these teachers score students highly if they agree with them, and reduce the grade if they use their mind and argue. The old adge remains true: Give me a boy until the age of seven, and I will give you the man.

This is no surprise to Him & has had His plans. Yes, in the “natural” it looks hopeless and inevitable; “BUT God”. In my humble opinion, I think the “raising up” of the Tea Party, elections last November of the Consvs., the popularity of people like Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachmann, etc., the exposure of corruption & frauds, death of OBL, spiritual revival among the youth (yes, many don’t know about that), all point to our restoration in a few years – with another big win in 2012. Of course I can’t prove any of it & time will tell, but most leave out the divine intervention (which is needed to win) that may happen if God so deems, if a good many repent & return to Him. However, believe there will also be many judgements that we deserve but will help bring many back to Him bc there still are many who serve Him in this nation & have been praying for decades, plus our godly ancestors that He remembers………..& God bless Israel !!!!!

      Way to go Cali freedom loving tax-payers!

      Now why is GB and the Blaze not telling us about the dozen or so dogs I mean Arabs which were slaughtered on the border today?? Glenn you like it when Jews slaugther dogs I mean Arabs don’t you? Do they sends you some legs or something in order to placate you? Free Arab meat? Will GB do a cry for the Arabs murdered on the border Monday? Anyone think he could gin up a tear or two for the murdered Arabs? Maybe interview their parents, spouses or children? I’m sure you could make it personal if you wanted to GB. Every time a Jew is killed the world has to stop and get to know the family.. Why the double standard GB? Do they pay you real well? Is that how you feed that fat face of yours GB by shilling for Jews and ignoring murdered Arabs?

      You are a fine fellow GB.. Keep preaching the Jew worship and Universalism for the sheeple but one day you will be forced to pay the piper for your wickedness. God is not mocked. There is neither Jew nor Gentile in Christ neither male or female GB but we are all one and I‘m sure God doesn’t like to see Arabs slaughtered just as much as he doesn’t care to see Jews murdered.. But on the other hand you put a difference between the two because your heart is full of wickedness!

      As a Professor of Psychology in FL, I work daily with mostly Marxists, Communists and Socialists-completely brain-dead zombies. The real problem is that is what they are teaching your kids. The other day a Hispanic history professor told his class, “All of the Founding Fathers were criminals”.
      Thank God my boss is a closet conservative or I would have been fired by now, not for anything except I am a proud Tea-Party member and a Conservative! Good ol’ diversity, my a$$!

      “Why Is a California Teachers Union So Anti-Israel?”

      Probably because communists tend to be anti-semitic.

      They can see that Israel is destroying the world and will soon have a one world (Israeli controlled) government. “By Deception, Thou Shalt Make War” is the Mossad motto. And they certainly do!!

      Why does a teacher’s union have a committie that pakes foreign policy statements? What in t world does that have to do with a union? Nothing. Succh activities by a public employees union should be illegal.

      TechEngineer:

      First, communism and Marxism are not one in the same. So, why do you lump them together like they are one in the same? Sure, they share some fundamental principles, but the underlying point to my comment was – and I should have added this – that communists pretty much abhor all religion, unless it is a government-sponsored one.

      Also, we need to keep in mind that being Jewish is not a nationality. I think many people don’t understand this.

      Firstly the only ones who support Obama in SEIU unions are the extreme left which is about 40%.. the rest let them THINK they support him and go in a vote against not just Obama but ANY Democrats.. sad to say it’s the ONLY way these people can keep their jobs.. IF they come out and say anything they will be looking for work.. IT‘S sad to see how AMERICAN’S are allowing unions to enslave them.. and they can’t do anything about it and support their families..

      The CFA has NOTHING to do with teaching. The ONLY thing they do is try to indoctrinate, brainwash, lie and pervert everything that is good in this country and try to make it evil. The Bible clearly states that any church that allows people with evil intent and/or with intent to go against God and His Word MUST NOT be tolerated and be kicked out of that church. There are a LOT of dead churches in California as well as every state because they allow people like this to be members of their congregation. CHURCHES of the United States unless you want to make it abundantly clear that you do not follow God or His Word and instead follow the world then you must not allow these ungodly people to remain in your churches. You may try to justify allowing them to stay but remember if you know anything at all about God, you will know that God will NOT accept excuses and that all the churches will be held strictly accountable and as people like this are accepted into your church, God WILL NOT allow you into His Kingdom. Take this message for what you will but just remember this when you find out how true this message is!

      Anti-Isreal? There a lot of verbage, connectiing the dots, unsuppored claims etc. in the lead for this thread. I’ll repost the report:

      http://www.calfac.org/sites/main/files/file-attachments/PJ_middleeastviolence_020709.pdf

      The report starts, “Whereas, violence against civilians – whether in Palestine or Israel– does not and will not serve the interest of peace and greater humanity in the region; and Whereas, neither the Israeli military nor Hamas is justified in attacking the civilian population of the other; and Whereas, the situation in Gaza, one of the most densely populated places on earth, has reached a profound and extremely desperate humanitarian crisis for the entire population of 1.5 million people, with children bearing the brunt (UNICEF)- a crisis that requires the immediate attention and assistance of all people and organizations of conscience throughout the world.”

      The position of the Right is simple. Any compromise to achieve peace in the Middle East is unthinkable. Only abject subjection, or the death of Palestenians will result in a final solution.

      Sorry, peace in the the Middle East, which would rank among the greatest accomplishments in human history, simply isn’t coming that that way. We need to try something different.

      @techengineer11 If you had the slight idea what you were talking about then you should also know that GB already touched on this many times. And when you throw yourself at a country’s border to become a martyr and help push your accomplices agenda, yes dog is a fitting term.
