Why Is a Homeland Security PSA on Your Hotel TV Screen?

The next time you stay in a hotel and flip on the television, you may see something new on the screen. It’s a public service announcement from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security telling you to keep your eye out for terrorists.

According to the DHS press release, as of today, 1.2 million hotels in the country including Marriott, Holiday Inn, Red Roof Inn, Radisson and others will be running the announcement with the DHS campaign phrase “If you see something, say something.”

“This private sector partnership is another example of how DHS and our nation’s hospitality industry are working together to protect our country, recognizing that security and economic prosperity often go hand-in-hand,” said Secretary Napolitano in the press release. “Each of us has a role to play in helping keep America safe, and time and again, we have seen the value of public vigilance in thwarting terrorism. Sending the simple but effective “If You See Something, Say Something™” message to the millions of guests that stay at hotels and motels each year is a significant step in engaging the full range of partners in our homeland security efforts. America’s hospitality industry is a vital engine for job growth and sustainment—and with partnerships like this it is also becoming an increasingly important partner in our nation’s security.”

Scott Petersen, chairman and CEO of LodgeNet, which has teamed up with DHS to run these announcements, said that 98 percent of hotel guests turn on their televisions. He says he believes this PSA will help display a “vital message of vigilance to many millions of travelers throughout the United States.”

USA Today reports some, like Josh Meyer of the Washington-based National Security Journalism Initiative, as saying this could place a burden on local authorities, as that’s who the PSA says to contact, with a slew of “baseless tips.”

      I don’t buy it. This is the one way street to Sharia law compliance. How many hotels have recently cancelled events by the TEA Party or the GOP debating the domestic risks? Some thing doesn’t pass the smell test here.

    They quite simply must advertise in such a way as to get a ton of useless and time wasting calls, how else could they justify their existence as an arm of govt. What better place to advertise, you are on vaca, or at least travelling for biz, and if the guy upstairs won’t stop jumping up and down, the front desk won’t do anything, maybe you make something up about him and the authorities haul him off?

    Same as the poison help call center… With the internet available I highly doubt there is anything the lackeys at the phones could tell a person that a search engine couldn’t, and google could do it sooner. People don’t need a call center for poison, they need to govt to stop getting into healthcare so that doctors can afford to take calls they don’t make money on…. they used to, I am told.

      Its kinda like how you can joke with a skinny person about being “fat,” but you cannot joke about weight with a fat person. The skinny person knows its not true, and doesn’t take offense, while the fat person is very concious of their weight and will take offense at any comment that seems even remotely close to mentioning their obvious problem.

    With Christmas season coming up, this should get interesting. Every time you see someone open their trunk, does anything and walks away, according to this clip, you should alert a LEO. How many people put things in their trunk for safe keeping and go back to shopping?

    These guys are goofs. It is about as credible as that Muslim used car salesman being a terrorist.

    DHS is engineering bull crap or making bull crap out of a molehill to JUSTIFY their own jobs and keep everyone afraid of terrorism. DHS is scarier than 4 70 year old white men and a lone Muslim used car salesman – NONE OF WHICH have every had a history of any violence.

They want us to give up, or get desperate and do something stupid. If enough people get arrested that have no criminal background, he can discredit us.     The street light video cameras watching everyone come and go from their homes isn’t enough fascist spying

    The video cameras taking pictures of everyone‘s auto plates as they drive down roads and loading that information into a police data base to be kept for what or for how long isn’t enough fascist spying?

    TSA and Border Patrol agents MISSION CREEP Of now stopping and searching vehicles far away from the border roads or any airport without a warrant is not enough fascist spying?

    Police stopiing people for traffic violations and using their handy dandy device to download the cell phone information of the driver and car occupants into their police datababse to be used for what or kept for how long is not enough of a police state?

    When is enough ENOUGH?

    Schools have not taught real world history for 40 years. Nor have the children of the last 40 years been taught the constitution and how this country evolved. Nothing in my lifetime is comparable to what’s going on now as to what happened in Europe from 1914 to 1945. I remember when I was a small child in school and watching a film about the U.S.S.R. It docunented how the children were encouraged to turn in their own parents for anything that was not consistant with the party line. It had such an impact on me that I remember that moment to this day. I am having the same feelings today afyter reading this article.

    One question, did that Napolitano come out of the closet yet? You do realize when she’s talking about seeing “terrorists” she’s referring to veterans, the elderly, Republicans, 2nd Amendment supporters, Ron Paul/Glen Beck/Alex Jones/Rush Limbaugh/Jesse Ventura fans, 1st Amendment supporters and anyone who isn’t down with illegal aliens and Islamic fundamentalist invading this country. That’s the kind of “terrorists” she’s referring to. She doesn’t consider radical Islamic fundamentalist to be a problem.

    Once again they treat us as though we have 0 intelligence. It makes me suspicios enough to not even turn on a TV when I stay at a hotel, motel, or Inn. I am uncompfortable with all this technology the progressives are using. It is making me paronoid. We will have no privacy even in our homes let alone when we travel, use our phones (cell or home), our computers, or even in conversations for fear of being reported. Where will this lead? It is all to scary to comprehend. Regardless, we are in trouble and this test on the 9th has me wondering what the he11 are they up to now?
