Why is California’s Economy Such a Mess?

It is a well-known fact that California has the largest state deficit in American history. Furthermore, at 11.9 percent, California also has the dismal distinction of having the nation’s second-highest unemployment rate.
And that’s not all. There are other points that some argue contribute to California’s weak economy*:
- Top Marginal Personal Income Tax Rate: 10.55 percent
- Top Marginal Corporate Income Tax Rate: 8.84 percent
- Personal Income Tax Progressivity (change in tax liability per $1,000 of income): $36.19
- Property Tax Burden (per $1,000 of personal income): $27.18
- Remaining Tax Burden: (per $1,000 of personal income): $16.13
- Debt Service as a Share to Tax Revenue: 8.7 percent
- Public Employees Per 10,000 of Population (full-time equivalent): 502.1
- State Minimum Wage: $8.00
- Average Worker’s Compensation Costs: $2.72
- Right to Work State: No
Obviously, after reviewing the above, California is not in very good shape (economically speaking).
So what is to be done?
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, (D-Calif) believes that “red tape” and an “out of whack” tax system have been detrimental to his city’s economic success. Therefore, he is proposing to cut frivolous taxes (including one on new car dealers) so that Los Angeles can attract businesses and create jobs.
However, as is the case whenever anyone talks about cutting taxes or state programs, Villaraigosa has been met with opposition.
Recently, during an interview with Neil Cavuto on Fox Business, Villaraigosa had a chance to discuss some of his plans to help spur his city’s (and state’s) economy.
“You’re going after this tax on car dealers,” Cavuto said during the interview, “Obviously you face the same budgetary pressures as many mayors, but you’re addressing them head on and ticking off a lot of people. Does that worry you?”
“No,” Villaraigosa laughed. “I’m operating as if this is the end of the line and I got to make the tough decisions.”
“It might well be,” Cavuto said in reference to the mayor’s actions possibly ending his political career.
The mayor responded that that did not worry him.
“I’m worried about the fact that we have to get our local governments, our state and federal governments, on a more sustainable path,” Villaraigosa said. “That means we’re going to have to cut cost and cut programs, we’re going to have to be more efficient. It also means we’re going to have to create more revenues and one way to do it is to cut red tape (which we’re doing), cut some of our taxes which are out of whack (which we’re also doing), but we’re also making investments.”
Watch the interview with Neil Cavtuto:
Villaraigosa went on to talk about the national extension of his 30/30 Initiative known as “America Fast Forward,” a “loan program” that could supposedly “create nearly 1 million jobs, produce $158 billion in economic output and generate $51 billion in worker income.”
And how is this any different from the Federal stimulus plan? It incentivizes localities such as Los Angeles to put up their own money, says the mayor.
Villaraigosa has also argued that the program will put people to work at “little cost, since 98 percent of the federal dollars would be repaid from local sources.”
“It’s critical that we make investments too,” the mayor argued. “We gotta’ cut on the one hand, there’s no question about that, but we gotta’ compete with China and Europe and the developing nations of the world who are all investing in high speed rail, investing in their ports—” he said before Cavuto interrupted him to make the point that one needs to have capital before they can invest.
The Mayor simply reiterated that it will be their own money they invest in Los Angeles’ economy.
Final thought: if Californians are really serious about turning their economy around, reducing their state deficit, and spurring job growth, cutting frivolous taxes would seem like an excellent place to start.
However, advocating a program that AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka says “will help revive manufacturing,” and that Barbara Boxer (D-Calif) says is “the kind of initiative that I believe the House and Senate can work together on,” may not be the best idea.

Then when it’s election time, they talk with their other liberal friends and determine that the current crash course is preferable to having to vote Republican. Sacramento has been ruled by liberal Dem/socialist/Mexican Lobbyists, and jerks like Tony Villar for decades. As the good paying jobs left the state, so did the taxpayers who footed the bill to support the social programs for the illegal alien invasion the leftists depend on, to cling to power.
Once to envy of many, Kaliporninia, in many areas, is now a third-world state. It has been hard to watch, and impossible to stop. Sad, very sad.

Posted on November 12, 2011 at 8:23amWhere do I start…California is like looking at the future of America. I remember 20 years ago saying to my friends out of State that we have a real problem with illegal immigration costing the state billions. No one could understand what I was talking about. Well fast forward. California has the most onerous tax laws and environmental regulations. All the Defense Contractors have left and most of the general manufacturing is gone. The regulations and taxes make it impossible to start a business in California and succeed. The sales tax is now up to 10% in many counties and cities coupled with a 10% State Income Tax, puts the middle class in a 60% tax rate. The only newcomers to California is Illegal Immigrants as they now it is a Sanctuary State. Essentially California is a Welfare State and a complete mess. The day of reckoning is just a question of time. Little fixes cannot turn California around. California will bring down the rest of the USA once the bailout cycle begins. It is just a matter of time.

We still continue the fight, the good fight, because we have no choice. If I could, I would get out. I think Montana or Texas would be a much better location for my Firearms business. Hispanics, Mexicans, claim to be proud. But, I have to wonder about that. Is it pride that makes one man want to dominate another just on site? Is it pride that makes a man want to visually destroy appealing features (almost like Al Qaeda) in their local communities? Is it pride that makes them intimidate women and use them? Is it pride that makes them wear their pants around their knees? Is it pride that allows them to beat up older, innocent or helpless people?
Or is it a mini-tyrant farm? an inner city ‘Che’ training camp?
If America “IS” the hope for the future that central and south america seem to believe it is going to be by virtue of their own citizens leaving to come here, why are these people coming here with such an attitude? Why are Americans being killed by them? And then allowed to remain?
Without at least some measure of principle, socially and individually, we will destroy ourselves.

Posted on November 11, 2011 at 5:47pmRE: Why does California’s economy suck?
Workman’s wages in Central America are $3/day, or around 38 cents an hour. In my opinion, this can be observed to be an equilibrium wage for workers with IQs in the mid-80s working in their native environment. It is enough money to purchase rice and beans, and live in a concrete cube provided by the employer. These workers usually don’t make political waves. To some groups who currently influence American public policy, these are dream workers.
California demonstrates the flaw in our influencer’s Logic, giving them the benefit of the doubt of having good intentions. The introduction of large numbers of low-IQ workers into a collectivist system designed by and for a high-IQ population, quickly bankrupts that system. This creates a sovereign debt problem in the short period, failure of the welfare state in the medium term, and the establishment of a new order in the longer term.

Posted on November 11, 2011 at 5:36pmCalifornia is leading the way to economic collapse.
And California will lead the way to Civil War II.
Critical mass will occur in Southern Calif, and it will start out as an open armned conflict between Hispanic and black street gangs, which are in a low intensity conflict right this minute.

Posted on November 13, 2011 at 6:48amRobert…your correct. The gang problem in California is out of control. The biggest turf wars are between Mexican and Black Gangs. When a Mexican gang moves into a black community they take over. Take Compton as an example, which 20 years ago was 75% black. Now it is 75% hispanic. These race wars are going on everyday but never reported by the media. I cannot see how California can ever be saved. The productive taxpayers are a minority and shrinking by the year and the underclass and illegals are exploding. California will bring down the rest of the country.

Posted on November 11, 2011 at 5:26pmEvery single problem in this state boils down to illegals and overbearing liberal legislation. Business is leaving here in droves over taxes. The sales tax here is so high I almost exclusively shop online. I can’t remember the last thing I bought in a store other than food – when you buy online it’s an automatic 10% discount for removing CA from the process.
As a resident I can confirm that there isn‘t a single problem in CA that isn’t perched on the backs of the illegals. It‘s a nightmare and I’m starting to notice they’re becoming openly racist against whites and blacks.

Report Post »I agree with what you say, but you forgot the radical environmentalist groups. Cal. would be in some trouble w/o the illegals, what with environmentalists banning many activities and making doing business in Cal next to impossible.
Just look at the OHV industry for an example:
Land closures of a gigantic magnitude have shrunk the OHV industry and all the jobs created by not only the manufacturers, but the dealers who sell the machines and the mechanics who fix them. That equals jobs lost, right?
Now, you might think that the OHV industry is small potatoes compared to others, and lets say you’re right. If that is true, then think about the big industries like farming. I know some farm land in Cal has had the water turned off.
How about logging?
How about the natural resources that can‘t be ’farmed’ in Cal?
I know from reading that there are some ridiculous regs on businesses in Cal, and they are driven by radicals in the supposed ‘environmental’ movement. These people are just zealots who have placed themselves on a pedestal, claiming a higer moral ground than others. They practice the tried and true Sol Alinsky method of deamonizing anyone who opposes them.
Now, add a few million illegal Mexicans with no allegiance to the US, have them demand their ‘rights’, have a dwindling tax base, and walla, you have a situation. Then add the Black ‘problem’.
Remember…Socialism always fails!
My advice…..MOVE OUT!

Posted on November 11, 2011 at 5:26pmSend the illegals home to Mexico that will cut crime, school overloads, cut welfare, drug use, reduce the social services and that is just a small start. BUT that will never be done, so drown in debt, allow evey drug user, social leach and thug move to Calif. Good luck

Posted on November 11, 2011 at 5:14pmPerhaps the Democratic Mayor could start by cutting the LA Pretrial Release program of $17M proposed for this year. A “net county cost”. For those unfamiliar with this program, it is a taxpayer funded; release felons from jail for free program. Taxpayers fund LA County employees to sit inside the local jails and interview felony arrests to determine if they are good candidates to be released for free. Nevermind public safety. Nevermind financial collateral to ensure the felon returns to court. Nevermind that the private sector provides bail and supervison for these felons at no cost to the taxpayer. Mayor, when you start running out of money, the responsible and prudent thing all real business people do is; cut spending within. NOT GETTING A LOAN. Cut goverment programs that compete with private sector now. U.S. HR 1885 Citizens Right to Know Act.

Posted on November 11, 2011 at 5:13pm…Yes, the car was a little rickety; but it got us down the road. All seemed manageable; even when the car was on fumes. When we ran out of gas; the stark difference between having gas and being on empty was monumental. We fooled ourselves to believe this free ride would last forever. We believed the creditors who gave us unlimited gas cards. Just keep driving they would say. But then the gas stations ran dry.
We value what we had before. Even though we cannot attain it.
The leaders are missing or dead. The necessary means of producing resources is fractured or belongs to someone else. Now we start all over again, realizing living with our means to create revenue was the most important variable.

Posted on November 11, 2011 at 5:11pmMaybe it is California’s destiny. Proving you cannot have the majority taking handouts from the few who work and it be sustainable, you cannot continue to help ILLEGAL aliens to “better” themselves without any recourse and you cannot build a strong economy off those corporations whose values only include greed and manipulation.

Posted on November 11, 2011 at 5:09pmWell, it was inevitable! How prophetic is it that their flag has a bear- as in bear economy- and a Red Star? That red star does NOT mean Macy’s. Could be the Russian Soviet bear, now that I think of it….Still, we have a green flag with the picture of George Washington on it. However, the way things are here in Washington, and we ALWAYS mimic California, we might have to change it to a red flag with the picture of Karl Marx. By and large, the only answer to all the state’s problems both here and in California seems to be to go status quo with more taxes!
