Why is Rachel Maddow Raving About the Packers Being ‘Awesome’?

MSNBC host Rachel Maddow may be liberal pundit who likes to fill her time bashing Glenn Beck, but that didn’t stop her on Friday from digressing into Super Bowl coverage and raving about the Green Bay Packers — with of course a slightly anti-capitalist bent.

Maddow, who’s an admitted New England Patriots fan, retold the rich history of the Green Bay Packers, explained how (and why) the Packers are the only team to be owned by their fans, and credited the team (correctly) with inventing the touchdown celebration tradition of jumping into the stands. That led to the conclusion that the Packers are “kind of awesome” and “really cool.”

“In some cities, fans throw things at the players,” she said, “in Green Bay the players throw themselves at the fans.”

Granted, she manged to work in some anti-capitalist undertones about rich teams and owners, which for some may overshadow the segment. But she should at least be credited for covering the truly remarkable story of the Green Bay Packers:*

*Full disclosure: I am a Packers fanatic. Read more about the Super Bowl bet between me and Scott Baker over on the blog.

What it shows is good people can come together over common principles to save something they love ad believe in. It shows how great small towns really are not the shoeless rabble of Anthony Weiner.

Everyday Americans helped fund this country during the Revolutionary War as well. We are a generous people Rachel if we feel the cause is good.

As a Packer fan who even attended the Ice Bowl, I’m embarrassed that Maddow supports them, but then I guess that even a liberal can be correct once in a blue moon. I went to school near Green Bay at the college where the Packers used to do Spring Training, and I can attest to the fact that they truly ARE the people’s team. The whole city supports the team in ways I never imagined having grown up in a suburb of Chicago. When I was there, the city changed many streets to be one way TO the stadium before the game and one way FROM the stadium after the game. The businessed either closed during the game or had skeleton staffs since almost no one left home during a game.

and they do the same for marathons.. cubs games.. sox games.. the taste.. or ANYTHING.. people who live in these area‘s don’t even have birthday parties during the game days their guest wouldn’t be able to park even IF they managed to find their way down all the one way and or closed streets… I tried to take my granddaughter home during a marathon I couldn’t get anywhere NEAR her house.. streets were blocked for a mile around it..

I heard some Steeler fans saying the ref’s calls always go against the Steelers, which is total BS. Somehow, the Steelers always get the long end of the stick and can do no wrong with the refs.
I was glad to see the fourth quarter fumble, caused by Matthews. That made my day.
