Why Is Sen. Chuck Grassley So Upset With the History Channel?

Senator Chuck Grassley Tweets His Disappointment with The History Channel

Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) hasn’t been quiet about his disappointment with the “History” channel in recent months, tweeting more than a few times on the matter.

Specifically, the senator seems to be upset that the channel’s programming has gone from “history” to, well, other things.

New York Magazine humorously highlighted Grassley’s criticisms, by date:

January 6, 2012: Grassley’s rage begins, nearly coinciding with the New Year that, according to Mayan prognostication, might be the last. Coincidence?

February 1, 2012: Grassley, unlike much of America, is not charmed by Pawn Stars. “I turn to History channel frequently bc I like history. There is nevr any history unless u r an antique dealer. Change name!”

February 29, 2012: Grassley is disappointed by Ax Men and plaintively wonders about the title yet again. “Just turned to history channel. No history. I used to get history. Why do we h v such a channel when it doesnt do history.”

February 25, 2012. Grassley is disappointed by Mudcats and once again sounds his unbarbaric yawp. “Just love history. So occasionally I turn to history channel. ‘mud cats’ when wi they put history back on the channel.”

March 10, 2012: Grassley is disappointed by Modern Marvels: Muscle Cars. “Just tuned to History channel. Once again no history.”

March 13, 2012: Chuck Grassley admits in a public forum to enjoying a History network reality show. It is American Pickers. The occasion is a momentous one. Is he embracing the channel’s new slogan, “History, made every day”?

March 14, 2012: Reports surface that History has ordered its first scripted series, Vikings. Chuck Grassley does not comment.

9:35 p.m. on March 18, 2012: Chuck Grassley is disappointed, once again. “History. No history. Axe man Timber Nothing historical. Back to FOX. Sigh. Suggest name to change channel name.”

Senator Chuck Grassley Tweets His Disappointment with The History Channel

And the senator spoke out a number of times about the channel over the weekend.

He tweeted Saturday, “Watch the nonhistory channel. ‘top gear’ is on. Real educational!!!!!!!” and Sunday ,”Wondering if No History Channel would be [interested] in covering my axe and chain saw work at my farm for Axeman. At least it would b new.”

A quick search of the History channel’s website reveals that, indeed, shows like Swamp People, Ax Men, and Pawn Stars are far more prevalent than documentaries on historical events.

No word yet on how the senator feels about National Geographic.

      Wow. Somebody noticed?
      Kinda like “SyFy”?

I call this Opryland-ing. Big corporations get involved with things that had great origins and had MEANING. Then, they sell out. Opryland was my first recognition of this. Gaylord (a CANADIAN company) bought it and operated it until they decided to tear it down and build themselves a shopping mall. Now, a couple decades later, Gaylord wants Dolly Parton to go in halfsies on a water park across the street, to be called “Opryland”. Not the same, no matter what they call it.
SyFy started buying syndicated crap and broadcasting it. You know, hardcore science fiction like WWF wrestling. The list is long and undistinguished. Tech TV was bought by G4 (video game tv). Now, with the two combined, we have… G4 video game tv. (sans tech tv)

The race to the bottom was a swift one. We now have 500 channels of crap, instead of 13 mediocre channels. Good shows come along, like “V” and mysteriously get cancelled, in spite of ratings. Then there was BSG (Gallactica) and the UNIONS and their strike. We lost several good shows over that strike. Why didn’t we get a seat at the bargaining table?
Change the channel you say? To what? I’d LOVE to have something to watch in addition to #GBTV and FoxNews.

I don‘t have cable but when I travel I’ll check it out. I like the shows about how aliens create crop circles. Aliens also are promoting the Caliphate, subliminally telling Democrats to create FEMA camps for the internment of conservatives, and using their powers to promote the idea that the United States has an obligation not only to support the richest people, but also the poor. Some say Jesus was, in fact, an alien because he supported those ideas, including the FEMA camps, if you care to read between the lines of his socialist doctrine.

Eh, the Military Channel isn’t sick with the reality plague… yet. Every week on way too many channels there’s a new show about a merry band of fringe characters chasing snakes, cars, garbage, fish, gold, oil, gators, Bigfoot… you name it. And why? Because this stuff is simple, stupid and cheap. It also nibbles at the ego of too many viewers. “Hey, I’ve got a great idea! Make a show about me as I colorfully go about my not so glamorous pursuits.”
Face it, America. We like whores. And they can be cheap, dirty, mindless whores. And we wanna be whores. This is Jersey Shore programming for the more reserved and aged.
      Whore on, History Channel!!!

Watch and choose as you will. I‘m only aware of this trend thru the seemingling endless promos and the times when I’m checking to see what might be on The History Channel besides “Hey, Let’s Watch Some Guys Make Beer.” Come to think of it, if that’s not a show, it should be.
I agree. Vote with your wallet and vote with your remote. I don‘t agree that folks can’t have an opinion. I say this to all comers and challengers: Nothing can compare to the abject suck fests that are Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz. Those shows aren’t on the History Channel. At least there’s that.

JZS, you almost completely described the history channel last time I watched it. It went from alien abduction stories, UFO sightings, crop circles, area 51, ESP, ghosts type topics… Next it was the Jesus didn’t die on the cross and he Mary Magdaline hitched up and moved to France where his bloodline flourished… Toss in a little Rennes Le Chateau conspiracy… Mix in some illuminati/free masons…. yes other traditional conspiracy stories, FEMA camps, manchurian candidates, etc… This was a few years back though…

Oh and Nazis lots of things on Nazis…

People have a right to complain though, sometimes ‘menus’ get changed if there is enough public demand, for something different. The ‘customer is always right?’ They look into which is most successful and wanted, gets more ratings in order to increase revenues…. Then again MSNBC has never let complaints and low ratings stop them….

Telling people to shut up after you vent your spleen on this forum is like showing up for a family picnic and deciding who gets to eat and who stands by and just watches in silence. Maybe you and Senator Grasley would like to get out your check books and buy the network. Then you could show us real history shows until your money runs out. Then you’d understand the realities of the free market and find some programming that will pay the bills. I agree with your preference for true history programming but it’s just not what the market will support. Sad as it is, it’s a fact. Besides most of the “history” programs you see these days have been re-written to fit the PC culture so they aren’t really history anyway. Maybe you and the Senator can work on that too!

I ABSOLUTELY AGREE 100%!! I remember when the History channel began there was some great substance! There was a value of getting the viewers to experience history. However, it is not relative to history at all. And if they do have something somewhat historic, there is a political agenda behind it. I remember many Saturdays sitting around a watching programs on the presidents, wars, or world events. Not any more! I check out the history channel at times only to be disappointed every time! In my opinion, it all began with the stupid programs on the earth after humans were gone. Or the MEGA earthquake, tornado, volcano, etc.

If anything, the situation has gotten worse over the years. Viewers are faced with a few hundred channels on cable /SAT airing programming growing ever more generic, while low-powered and new digital TV channels sit neglected or actually targeting narrow audiences that cable abandoned!

Glenn Beck is poised to lose his shirt. Or he could be catching a wave that’s going to make him a multibillioinaire. Viewers were tired of programming to the lowest denominator by ABC/CBS/NBC a generation ago, they’re frustrated by cable/SAT today. If internet goes after cable’s disaffected viewers in a big way–well, cable could learn the hard way “Those who refuse to learn from history are fated to repeat it.” Get ready for another viewer exodus from broadcasting.

it’s not culture that erks him. Although I’m sure it does. What the problem is, is the fact that history channel teaches nothing other than dont take your items to a pawn shop. I agree with him whole heartedly. I used to love the History channel. I dont anymore because there is no historical value to this network.

It’s called The History Channel, not The American Cultural Diversity Channel.

Kind of like the bass-ackwards names given to all the legislation in Congress. For example, The Affordable Health Care Act that makes health care unaffordable and takes away free choice. It should have been named, The Communist Takeover and Bankrupting of America Act.

History channel is really ‘Correct the Right Wing Version of History Channel’

Discovery is really ‘See how humans are ruining the earth for animals Channel’

Food Network is really ‘See dishes you will never eat because you are too poor to afford the ingredients and Chef Channel’ .. Wow.

PBS is really the Crap Channel, need I say more

TMZ is ‘I can’t hold the camera steady and cannot afford a steady-cam Channel’

MTV is ‘Don’t show any frame shot for more than 1/2 second Channel’ (This encourages ADD)

I’ll think of a more complete list tonight after I cycle through the entire available channel lineup, why in the hell do I even own a TV anymore? Hmm.

Do what I did 12 years ago, cancel your cable television service completely.

The only T.V. I watch now is the occasional football or basketball game at a friend’s house or at a local sports pub.

Since I stopped getting cable, I have gotten all my news and entertainment via the Internet, don’t miss T.V. at all.

Like the internet – intelligent (most people) using their Creator-given faculties of reason, wisdom and logic akin to common sense and critical thinking SKILLS (increasingly difficult to identify as the operating THINKING game – even among the HIGHEST members of society/gubmint) understand b.s. at the outset when they see/hear it. Without independent SOURCES sited to ‘back up’ the claim — (you know, for independent verification due diligence stuff we as PEOPLE should do anyway in our discovery of TRUTH) — Just more B.S. from a politician — DVR is way kewel – LOTS of ‘historical’ stuff to follow in many venues – books still exist – but ya gotta know where to ‘look’ :-) “Question with BOLDNESS, even the very existence of God Himself.” Thomas Jefferson (I don‘t know waht ’God’ is — but I KNOW what he ISN’T – “I like your Christ. I do NOT like your Christians. So many are unlike your Christ.” ~Mahatma Ghandi

Like/LIKE — people tend to FORGET — “You only have rights IF you exercise them — properly.” — Trouble is — ‘thinking’ one has ‘rights’ don’t make it so unless you know WHO YOU ARE, and where they came from — then the task is to know how to STAND on them properly. Like at ‘work.‘ It’s only a benefit if you use it… RESPONSIBLY. Then of course, ‘they’ attack you for ‘leave abuse…’ :-)

kinda like the internet — intelligent people (most people) with critical thinking SKILLS and common sense (increasingly difficult to find today even at the HIGHEST levels of ‘gubmint’) can sift thru the B.S. and realize that although ‘reality teevee’ is there — so are some actual MIND joggers on actual historical presentations. Camp Douglas was one of the latest – nevermind the ‘glorification’ stuff (the victors are the ‘writers’ of history — and HAVE been since the Hyksos (egyptians called them the ‘shepherd kings’…hm sounds familiar in the Good Book) — Get BOTH sides of the ‘story,‘ dig UP what’s ‘buried.’ Compare and contrast. Reason, wisdom and logic will expose TRUTH. What one chooses to DO with that knowledge is the true test of…. ‘character.’

@TAXPRO4UO3 Most people have never heard of Camp Douglas in Chicago run during the “War for Southern Independence”. They may have heard of Andersonville in Georgia because of the P.C yankee spin on history, but Camp Douglas was far worse and cruel than any war camp run by the South. The Southerners there were starved, and left to freeze to death by the union and then instead of being given a Christian burial, most were dumped in the lake.

Hey RebelYell, if you want to see a Civil War POW camp that really sucked, take a trip to the Delaware/Pennsylvania border. There’s an ACW POW camp located on a island in the middle of the Delaware river that they have tours of. Half of the island is a marsh and full of mosquitoes. It was hell on earth for people living in tents in either the summer or the winter. Quite an educational experience to tour the island and see where the tents used to be.

I actually fired off an e-mail to the History Channel a while back asking them to stop showing pseudo-science garbage about UFO’s and ancient aliens and trying to pass it off as “history.” There are many items of actual historical interest that I would like to know more about, not ancient aliens, swamp people, and extreme bluegill fishermen.

I am forced to agree with the Senator. I used to LOVE the History channel, but it just became deluged with crap. You end up with lame reality shows and Mayan/2012/Nostradamus shows about the friggin’ apocalypse. That’s pretty much it. At the tail end of my History watching days the only show that they played that I truly enjoyed was The Universe.

I find myself agreeing with a politician….not cool……I have been complaining for awhile, how they don’t have actual history programs on that channel anymore. Of course, History, Discovery and several others all have the same crappy shows, because they will come up with a concept and turn it into a never ending string of shows. As an example, they have multiple shows about fishing/crabbing, various shows about gold mining, several about gun shops, people with metal detectors, people who buy storage lockers, people who run pawn shops, etc, etc..etc…….I wouldn’t mind so much I guess, if they didn’t all have the same contrived drama in them, where everyone is constantly in conflict and yelling at each other. I’m going to be cancelling my satellite soon anyhow, and finally make the jump to internet tv, since I have been mostly watching that for months anyways……thank you for enduring my rant…..:P

I’ve noticed the same thing including much hate speech towards whites with constant harping on slavery. America does not need to have any shame for a world that was so different. Folks like to say the Constitution is out of date and not applicable to modern times while the slavery issue is always and forever. Well its just the opposite. The Constitution knew what freedom was and enumerated it to all men, while slavery was old world and dying even then.
