Why Is Tim Tebow Backing Out of a Speech at Rod Parsley’s Christian Conference?

Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow has captured headlines for months over the phenomenon known as “Tebowing” and a strong allegiance to his Christian beliefs. Now, the famous football player may be the focus of controversy in the faith community after backing out of “Contending for the Faith Weekend,” a Christian revival event he reportedly committed to speak at.
Tebow was scheduled to appear in March at the three-day Columbus, Ohio, event being hosted by televangelist Rod Parsley. In a phone interview with the Associated Press, Tebow’s brother Robbie confirmed that his brother is canceling. ABC6 reports that this decision is based on Parsley’s controversial teachings. Sports Illustrated has more:
Parsley teaches that God wants the faithful to be rich. Last year, he asked followers to donate more than $1 million to ward off satanic attacks. In the 2008 presidential election, Republican Sen. John McCain disowned an endorsement from Parsley after learning the pastor called Islam an “anti-Christ” religion.
Apparently, the Tebow camp hadn’t looked into the event prior to committing. And now, something has led the player — perhaps the aforementioned elements — to backtrack on his commitment.
“I know for a fact that Tim is not going to be a part of it,” Robbie Tebow said. “That’s being resolved.”
Mark Youngkin, a spokesperson for Parsley, told the AP that Tebow has a contract to speak at the event and that the organizers have asked him to reconsider.
“The ball’s in their court at this point,” Youngkin said.

Posted on February 2, 2012 at 6:30pmMy only problem with the use of these scriptures is that people interpret them to mean that having money or being rich is evil. No one should ever put their faith in their money or be covetous but that doesn‘t mean you can’t have wealth. I could quote you a ton of scripture both new and old testament that talk about the blessings of God and having wealth. I‘m not saying that there aren’t preachers out there trying to con people out of their money but I think its wrong to lump all TV preachers into this category. I don’t personally watch Rod Parsely but I do believe in the blessing doctrine. “Bring you all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house, and test me now in this, says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.” Micah 3:10

Posted on February 2, 2012 at 6:34pmPaul recognized that Christ’s ministers had the right to be fully supported by their respective Churches. To show that God demanded support of His full time ministers, Paul referred back to the Law of Moses. Though the Christian is no longer bound by the Law of Moses, that Law reflects the holiness and desires, the standards of God. In the Old Testament every tribe in Israel was given land as an inheritance from God. The Levites (priests) belonged to God (Numbers 8:14). Since they belonged to God, they cared for the things of God. Since they belonged to God, they shared in the things of God, the tithe, that came into the Temple
Of every sacrifice that was brought into the Temple, God allowed the Levites to take a portion as food. Of every offering of food or precious ornaments that came into the house of God, the Levites took a portion. Paul applied the principle of the Levites being supported by Israel to the New Testament minister. Though we in the New Testament are not bound by the Law, God has set aside ministers to carry His Word just as He set aside the Levites to care for the things of to care for the things of the Temple. God expects that His ministers be supported, not starved nor allowed to suffer, but be supported while they tend to His Word. Paul said that he and Barnabas had sown to the Corinthian Church spiritual things, therefore the believers there should have been more than willing to support them in carnal things (food, clothing, a place to stay, etc.).

Posted on February 2, 2012 at 7:14pmOr we could quote Jesus , Now a man came up to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?”
“Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the commandments.”
“Which ones?” the man inquired.
Jesus replied, “ ‘Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, honor your father and mother,’ and ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’”
“All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?”
Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.
Then Jesus said to his disciples, “I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” (Matthew 19:16-24 NIV84)

Report Post »Those who have, through no fault of their own, been deceived (Gal 3:1) by the doctrine of no longer being ‘under the law’ (i.e. “Though the Christian is no longer bound by the Law of Moses, that Law reflects the holiness and desires, the standards of God.” as you wrote) have stumbled by misusing & misunderstanding Gal 3:25 in that “we are no longer under the law” in some translations in the Greek is “no longer under a schoolmaster”. The word for ‘schoolmaster’ is better understood as likened to the Scribes & Pharasees who oversee the ‘Oral Law’ ~ the additional laws they added in direct violation of the Torah (Deu 4:2) & the Revelation of the Messiah Yahushua (Rev. 22:19) they were supposed to uphold and tutor to others to be light (Prov. 6:20-23) to all nations (Matt. 5:14-16). This addition of Oral law is just as much a violation as the Christian subtracting even 1 letter the good deeds of Torah-keeping commands in the 1st 5 books of the Scriptures as Yahushua Himself warned in Matt. 5:17-20. What is clearly described in Galatians Ch. 5 are the CURSES of breaking commands. The ‘schoolmaster’ is defined as according to Strong’s = “a tutor i.e. a guardian and guide of boys. Among the Greeks and the Romans the name was applied to trustworthy slaves who were charged w/ the duty of supervising the life & morals of boys belonging to the better class. The boys were not allowed so much as to step out of the house without them before arriving at the age

Thank you for your informative response. I am always honored to discuss God’s word with someone who has spent time studying the scriptures. I must respectfully disagree with your statement about the meaning of the scriptures in Galatians. Paul had previously been to Galatia and helped establish the church there. However, some Jewish christians were following him and after he left they convinced the people that to be true followers they needed to start obeying the Law. Galatians 5 contains Paul’s admonish of this teaching. He starts by saying that following the Law is to put one’s self back into bondage and the only thing that counts is faith not obedience of the Law. He then goes onto say that we should use our freedom to live under the spirit and not of the flesh and that the fulfillment of the Law is a commandment that Jesus gave: “Love thy neighbor as thy self.”
That is not to say that the Law should be ignored. For the blessing (and curses) are from the Law and are still in effect today. Our righteousness as described in Galatians 3 comes through faith and believing not from works under the Law. Galatians 3:5-6 are probably my favorite verses. ” 5 So again I ask, does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you by the works of the law, or by your believing what you heard? 6 So also Abraham “believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”

What a small god you serve.
What did you go to these churches for? Or should I say who did you go to meet? Judging by your writings I would think if you found a bunch of snarky hypocrites in those churches, you should have felt right at home. Laying the works of the Holy Spirit, no matter how strange to our human eyes, at the foot of satan is what Jesus taught as the unpardonable sin. (Matthew 12:22-36) Not saying you did this, just a friendly warning.
I believe in speaking in tongues and even I will agree with you, the Assemblies of God place way to much emphasis on it. No tongues…then you haven’t truly received the baptism of the Holy Spirit seems to be their doctrine. But I will stop way short of saying God’s Spirit is not alive and well in their Churches. (I Refer back to the unpardonable sin)
I have left churches for unsound doctrines, and to me the prosperity doctrine is a false doctrine. But to blame or accuse a whole church, or denomination, based on what you saw in some people of that church is foolishness. It is the eyes of the world that can’t distinguish between the fruits of the Spirit and those of men.
Report Post »Too much of the world choses to get sidetracked by the religion’s of men and never meet the one true living God. I am not a big fan of religion. I am a huge fan of faith. For it is through faith in Christ Jesus, faith that is a gift from God, by which I am saved.
